I think Godot is potentially on the same path to greatness Blender is on. That is my hope.

I would say Unity kickstarted Godot towards that path.

The thing about blender is that it doesn't affect consumer in any shape or form once a product is finished. And the majority of the time you use it to create a component of a product instead of a product itself.

I started making games on Godot a few days ago because I like open source and I genuinely think it will take a good place in the market like Blender, but the community likes the engine to the point of blindness. I saw people recommend Godot to mid size teams for 3D and ignore their spesific questions with "It has gotten better." When they run into an issue and lose valuable development hours, will these MFers apologize and compensate them for lost time? Of course not. When the devs make a workaround for issues and now have to navigate that workaround and lose efficiency, will these MFers compensate for lost efficiency? Nope. And it's not even a bad engine. It's also promising. The community just needs get real a bit and stop answering questions of now with promises of a future.

Wow, amazing point. I agree with the overall idea that sometimes they trust so much in the future. And of course, it will probably be amazing. But what about the present moments?

Godot is not the industry standard, but Blender is not the industry standard either in 2010. Standards change all the time, even if slowly. Therefore, I'd just say wait and see. Technically, Godot can easily compete with Unity on most aspects of game development, thanks to its support for C++ extensions and its native support for C#.

Still it may be one of the top software for 3D modeling by far, and it's FOSS, that is the point. Of course, this changes always and can vary in lots of things...

@hendersonandre1
@hendersonandre1 Месяц назад
I agree Unity is better. Unity is older. Unity has deeper pockets and a lot more talented people developing the engine. When I first started using Unity it was only on Macs and it was like what Godot was 1 year ago I would say. Do I still use Unity not really. I migrated over to Godot. I also use to be a big adobe product user until they changed their license to subscription base. From there I moved to open source app and license app. I understood why adobe did what they did but I also understood that because of what they did you are renting their software and if you stop paying all of your work becomes useless. Just like Unity changed their license I learned that they will be another adobe and users would be renting their app to make games. So as our ecosystem evolves with developing games so I shale evolve with the apps I use to make a game. Will big companies start using Godot to develop games. The same question was asked back in the day with Unity and the answer is yes. Unity has some of the top apps in the app store so I do believe this is something that will happen in the future with Godot provided they keep doing what they are doing.

@@hendersonandre1 unity isn't THAT older, both have started around 2000s

@@ArksideGames Unity initial release 2005. Godot initial release 2014. That's almost a full decade from one another. 9 years is a lot. If it was 1 year or even maybe 2 but you are talking about 9 years. For a engine/tech or even a business that's a long time.

It's not there yet but with W4 working on making porting to consoles better and other concerns it could become industry standard if it keeps growing like it has been and things keep getting created with it/for it.

TL;DR : NO, if they don't start ramping up development. Currently godot development is dogshit. and mostly focusing on wrong things.
@lettacorporation

@ArksideGames
@ArksideGames Месяц назад
@@lettacorporation After having 20million$ in funding, they are still not working on improving their UI(which is one of the biggest problems with godot), they also have internal drama(useless hiring managers instead of working on the engine), they charge insane amounts to port to consoles, INSANE lack of proper documentation or tutorials, very basic bugs that are inexcusable and amature level, toolas that are already in other engines godot lacks(these are not fun-to-have, but rather important-to-have), still fucking around with the rendering engine and not stabilized. The game engine is still heavily underdeveloped, great for small 2D experiments, but especially not good for 3D games. There are a lot more. The devs are more focused on filling their pockets than developing it seems.

Godot will never be the "Blender" of game engines and that's not a hate comment or stuff like that , open source game engines have big flaws in terms of stuff like SDK and API's , for instance GODOT main renderer is only vulkan API , and i know that we live in 2024 , but there are still a lot of ppl that play games that have a PC that's older than 2016 , specially the type of games that are made with Godot , 2d/ pixelart games. Another one is the GDscript , i know its a pyton like script language , but for someone who started learning programming with C++ , GDscript is just weird , and i think that focusing more on integrating the engine with C# will bring more benefits in long term. Another thing is 3D , there is a good reason why there are no 3d projects made with Godot , yes i know there are some 3d projects that are on the making, and from devlogs what i can see is that 3d takes a lot of effort to make right in Godot. However Godot has it wins too , for instance nodes and scenes are way better than prefabs and blueprint actors if you ask me, so Godot is good if you want to make a 2d/2.5d game with it and your team is 1-5 ppl , anything more and you might have to reconsider what engine your using.

Thank you both for sharing! I don't see the problem with Gdscript, though. Easy for beginners and actually tailored for them. The good thing is that it actually supports a variety of languages...
@dudemannxs

I agree with some of your points, but you must consider the phenomenon we're seeing. The way Godot is moving reminds me of Adobe Flash back in the day which was loved and hated but allowed so many to get into multimedia dev. ActionScript was quite the Frankenstein, but it introduced a lot of folks to object-oriented programming, who probably would never have even considered it. GDScript has a similar place and may one day be dropped, but now it's a decent point of entry. Heck, Unity had Boo and JavaScript for years before they dropped them for C#. Godot has its warts, but due to Unity's debacle, it's getting so much attention, and being FOSS, unlike Flash, it is able to evolve at an extremely fast rate as more devs jump on board. Blender took forever to move from a hobbyist tool to a pro contender. I don't think Godot will take as long, and the warts will disappear faster. It's a great time to be a game dev.

Saying that "there are no 3D projects made with Godot" is simply spreading false information to people. "Ex-Zodiac", "Pingo Adventure" , "Tail Quest", "Cruelty Squad", "Wrought Flesh", "Ocean Mirror", and a lot more that are out there or coming soon. The "it's not there yet" when talking about 3D games in Godot is getting old.
