I think R* doesn't really have a plan what they are doing. Beginning of GTAO definitely took place before story mode but with all the DLCs it takes place after story mode by now. The most obvious reference in dialogue I found to this was during the prep mission for the hangar where Ron talks about Trevor dumping him. It's probably not THE most obvious one but that was the time when I actually paid attention to what happens when in the game
Smart people believe Online is like RDR UN. Its set in its own universe but it isnt cannon in main universe. Only references exist but not really cannon otherwise everyone would mention ridiculous events like deads were walking the earth and all that.
@@SeriousDragonify l like to think as that, but also believing that after the Heists DLC, the game started to turn into a alternative story were things happening during the events of GTA Online is just minor changes, the same thing that happens in Story mode, also happened in Online in a different way. Maybe Trevor never met Michael and Franklin were still on the hood, but the same main story events also happened in this alternative Online in different ways. l know it has a lot of flaws, but at the end it's just a point of view after all.
I think it’s simple and obvious. The original online was just a few months before sp and as time went on, they updated online to be post sp since sp was nearly a decade ago.
In the Cayo Perico Heist, the O'Neil's farmhouse is not destroyed in one of the setup missions, but it does have a keycard scanner inside, so perhaps it was rebuilt since 2013
@@DzakyAmany yeah, and also if your bunker or biker business gets raided I think sometimes the O'Neil's have the stolen goods, sometimes they also have them in Trevor's car which means that maybe they stole it off of him at some point after the main story
Casino - Strong Arm Tactics: Tao Cheng says "I almost died in there, never forget" in Chinese when the player is escorting Tao and his translator to the Pacific Bluffs Country Club, the place where his dad died in the explosion in 2013 by Franklin.
@@Dayashii The Gold Medal objective for The Third Way (Ending C) says "Stick, Tick... Boom!", it requires player to blow Wei Cheng using sticky bombs to obtain Gold for that mission.
Fun fact, this is the first time that option C has been confirmed as the Canon ending. Possibly second if you want to talk about Ron saying Trevor went all vinewood but that just rules out his death mission since Michael still could have died at that point.

I guess the storyline is: OG Contact mission + Heists + Lowriders + Biker and SecuroServ businesses Then GTA V happens - Ending with ending C (During this, the protagonist keeps maintaining their businesses) Then finally in 2017, agent 14 contacts the player to introduce the bunker. After which, the story gradually continues with the dlcs until Los Santos Tuners (and beyond)

Only thing I can think of is the special vehicle missions canonically don't take place for a few months since singleplayer takes place over about 3 months
Given the requester names as the video says, the car thefts occur before the story line. But given the ramp buggy raid on the UD, that bit probably happens after. So, the most logical explanation is that Import Export starts before the story, spans the whole of it, and ends after it. Everything after that DLC is post story, everything before it is pre.

Casino heist: lester tells the player in the very first cutscene: I've hit UD, I'm richer that you could imagine and having more money that a i know how to spend it. Right before meeting the asian chick while in other references as you showed he didn't do it yet
In the Bikers clubhouse, there is a picture of Terry with 'R.I.P.' drawn under it, which suggests that the bikers dlc was already after the storyline (Trevor can kill Terry in Mr. Philips). But interestingly they went back on it in the next update Import/Export with the Jay Norris and Molly thing you mentioned.
I consider during story mode my player is doing tedious special crates mission :) - BTW, considering the Online Player had been working for Martin Madrazo Contact Missions, it is not unreal to think Madrazo could also contract the online player to hunt Trevor and Michael during their exile from LS, what you explain their absolute impossibility to win over Madrazo goons.
I think online takes place before, during, and after the story. Theres some references to it being before, then some after. And it only makes sense. GTAO has been going so long it makes sense it went through the story not ahead or after. There’s multiple ways to tell that at least some parts are post story, I’d say its pretty safe to suggest that the heist update comes after the story.
Mate, in diamond casino heist approaching the casino with carogobob silent and sneaky Lester mentions his old pal Michael while in getting close to cargobob or after it.
Lester's dialogues in that parts: "I miss hearing the sound of a helicopter in my comms" "The less said about my old pals the better" Its a clear reference that Lester is talking about The Bureau Raid and that the Roof Entry is the canon approach.
I think it's suggested that Trevor hates LS mainly *because* of Series A. After all, Series A explains how Trevor got his favorite Impotent Rage statue. It's his only remaining birthday gift that the Online character and his friends got him that he still had.
During the Import/Export Ramp Buggy mission, you are tasked with helping a group criminals escape after robbing the Union Depositary. That'd suggest it's past singleplayer since Franklin Michael and Trevor were the first ones to ever rob it.
its wildly weird seeing the last 8 years of my life in a chronological list according to gta dlcs 😭 like i can distinctly remember each dlc launch and what i was doing when they came out. Juts weird to see a game last this long and keep my interest.
Rockstar realistically should’ve planned this. They said it was pre-story mode and go and change it 4 years later. They should’ve of planned it like the years are changing with the years irl etc.
So a quick summary: Before 2017, all the gta online events were in the past until 2017 where the storyline is in present [That also means Trevor went Hollywood during that time period lmao]
Like most people said, the original missions took place before single player. For example when we first meet Trevor (online) he hasn’t done as much stuff as he did by the end of single player. Another example is in single player and we’re setting up for the jewellery heist lester said and I quote “I knew a guy but he’s unpredictable” obviously referring to the online character. Also one reference is about Dom, which you can see die in one mission after completing all parachutes, but in online he sometimes call you to go somewhere (idk where). By this fact it would mean that online is after story mode.
Lester even openly said in the first cutscene for CASINO HEIST that he jas taken the UD and in one of the mission in online where we have to go through that tunnel near the IAA lab, he mentions on the speakerphone that IT HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE as that mission was almost similar to the one in single player- MONKEY BUSINESS.
In Cayo Perico heist(at least your first time) you get a cutscene at thr end, which reveals some... photos that Ms. Madrazzo had with Trevor, and were now on the possession of Mr. Rubio(until you steal it lol) again, Trevor just met Ms. Madrazzo AFTER the story has already started(most likely already half the story) so that makes Cayo Perico an After-Story DLC
I think it is a mix of both before and after based on the update you’re playing. Everything from the first update up to the Lowriders update definitely occurs before the events of the campaign, everything from Finance and Felony to Bikers can occur either before or after the events of the campaign and everything past Gunrunners definitely occurs after the events of the campaign.
In the Series A Funding heist, Trevor gets away with the Impotent Rage statue he's so upset is destroyed in the story. It makes sense the bikers destroyed it as they knew it had the Mollis that was stolen from them in the heist setup
Basically: 0.Prologue in North Yankton 1.Some Online 2.Story Mode 3.Rest of Online I expect Expanded and Enhanced version to offer some sort of time-jump as well. Maybe Michael remembering some old stuff he did with Brad back in the day, OR, more likely, a younger Franklin missions while growing up with Lamar, Tonya and JB.
What annoys me is Rockstar clearly changed their mind around the time of gun running and moved the timeline from before the story to the present day but never updated the map to reflect this. Aside from the updated exteriors for businesses and properties the map still looks identical to the way it did before the story. Things that were damages or destroyed during story mode are still intact, signs, billboards and businesses have never changed or been updated and obviously construction sites have never been finished. Imagine if these things were updated one or twice a year to reflect the passage of time.
also, one of Lester's voice lines in the Gruppe Sechs approach makes tribute to the jewel store heist, and with "knocking myself of the top spot" after claiming we are making the most important heist in history, he clearly refers to the big score
If smuggler's run is implied as after the game, and Ron is complaining. You can go and do some old missions where he and Trevor are the same old same old.

That's actually some pretty interesting references there, and neat that GTA V & GTA Online co-exist with cross-references to each other too!🤯 I reckon it would be interesting to do a playthrough of both GTA V & GTA Online whilst roughly keeping to the overall timeline that both share, would be neat to see how things could work out overall🤔👍
I think Rockstar should make it mandatory that online missions can only be done in chronological order (like on singleplayer campaing). If you have not completed the previous ones, you cannot continue because you would skip several years.
Fun Fact: On the Import/Export Update one of the personal collections is a reference to Yusuf amir's dad(Gta TboTg's main character friend for those who dont know)

Oh my god. I finally needed a video explaining this.. I've been telling people factual knowledge for so long! Also, Tao Cheng Mentions during the Casino missions how he 'almost' died at the country club. Indicating that the ending was in fact Deathwish. Another thing which may have been too far looked over is when Trevor visits Los Santos in the story it's suggested it's the first time he's been but in Series A he's moving drugs in Eastern Los Santos?? One thing I've learnt from this video is the Lamar Gas stealing missions were tied together, so even you have taught me new things 😅 Awesome Video!
Exactly some say that the updates for gta online take place in the years they come out however that doesn't make any sense cause the map hasn't shown any type of growth in 8 years.
Certain missions and free roam setups use that building, if they complete it they'd have to load in the old incomplete version whenever it was needed, easier to keep it under construction
I'm sure that the Heists Update and storymode are intertwined. In the Heists Update, you raid the Humane Labs for Agent 14 & Karen. In storymode, Steve Haines states that his "sources" are convinced that the facility is making a nerve toxin. The lab raid is explains how he found out about it.

I think the Biker and the Import/Export DLCs are happening at the same time as the Singleplayer because in the Biker DLC you can find a photo in your clubhouse that references Terry's death, which means the Biker DLC must have happened after Mr. Philips, but before the Third Way.
In the casino mission “Strong Arm Tactics” when escaping to the country club, Tao Cheng, son of Wei Cheng screams in chinese “i almost died once at that club, never again!”. Keep in mind that in story mode you only have to kill Wei Cheng and Tao is optional, Which not only tells us that this is after the storyline but also that option c in story mode is the canon ending.
I think it probably started before single player, but as time progressed it’s now after those events. Subtle things like map damage not being there is probably just a mess up and not on purpose
According to my theory gta online takes place before after as well as during the story mode timeline Also I think that gta online is an alternate universe coz in story mode we don't have alot of new vehicles and futuristic stuff which is available in online.
My head canon is that GTA Online from launch all the way to Ill-Gotten Gains Part 2 DLC is set before the Story Mode. Since the vehicles from that DLC were the last to be added to the Story Mode. By that logic, you could also argue that the Freemode Events DLC took place before Story Mode as well since The Beast confronted Bigfoot in a Story Mode Easter egg. Same also applies to the Lowriders DLC since you can buy weapons from it, but it's just weird for me that none of the lowriders made it in
However, after watching the video, I say it's pretty likely that the Halloween Surprise and Executives & Other Criminals DLC could come before Story Mode as well, though it still feel a bit off for me to see none of the vehicles. Imagine flying the Valkyrie and have your AI friend shoot cops automatically or something
It's important to keep in mind that the story mode has a canon path, so not all the decisions you made in *your* playthrough are going to be the same choices we see for references. Exs.) • Cheng Jr. can be killed in ending C, but he states that he survived the assassination attempt in an Online Casino mission. • Agent ULP can be killed during story mode, but has a whole mission series in Online as well • Chef can be killed in the "Meth'd Up" Online mission, but is alive for an Auto Shop Contract
So here's what I think is happening: The GTA Online story begins before the main story, or at least so we think. In reality, I think both started at the exact same time. Here's why. In the main story we know that each heist the trio pulls requires a bigger crew. Though we don't realize this in the prologue because there are only three people. Yet Lester is still involved in the prologue heist. After the prologue mission it fast forward to the present day with Michael in therapy. So obviously Michael (and Trevor) both moved to Los Santos following the events of the botched heist. Because the heist was a major failure everyone went their separate ways. Michael went with the Bureau, Trevor probably flew his own plane, and Lester just moves to Los Santos still in contact with Michael at the least. Well why would the GTA Online player move to Los Santos and why don't they really "talk" and why ate they so good at the heists now? That is because the GTA Online player was involved in the prologue heist. You see, after the botched heist, everyone was supposed to forget each other except Lester kept in touch with Michael and the Online Player. The Online Player probably did a smaller role in the prologue heist which is why they were never really referenced. However the online player also kept in touch with Trevor as we know they did some work with him in Online. Now we also know that after the prologue heist, everyone kinda changed their names or at least Micharl changed his last name. The online player gets to choose their name as well. They don't talk because they're good at not talking about the botched heist. However, the online player still wishes to remain anonymous to Michael because they probably found out that Michael was working with the Bureau. This is why in the story Lester only refers to the online player as "someone who is unpredictable". Lester has worked with the online player prior to contacting Michael in the story. This also references to the online heists as we can assume this is what Lester means by working with someone. The online heists take place between the prologue and the opening of the game which is why we don't hear about them on the radio. Now at some point, both the main story and online story reach a point where they happen at the same time in Los Santos. When Michael start reworking with Lester, the online player lies low to not interact with Michael because of the whole Bureau thing. This is why they are not in the story heists and we don't see them working with TP Enterprise in the story (which is also why Trevor briefly referenced the online player). During this time, the online player just runs their own business (CEO). When the main story ends, the online player goes back to working with Lester and now Ron since Trevor goes to Vinewood (meaning the ending where all three live is canon). Now online takes place after the main story. Everyone once again goes separate ways but this time keeps in touch except the online player still never reunites with Michael (yet and maybe will in a future DLC) and never meets Franklin until the contract DLC. So the player continues to run businesses and all that stuff until now it's been so many years that Franklin is running his own business and Michael and Trevor work in Vinewood. Franklin wants needs some help with his business and Lester tells Franklin about the online player. Now at this point, the player also has been involved with the Feds because of the doomsday heist and now the new ULP missions. My guess for the future is that Michael will end up reaching out to the player to do some dirty work or a new DLC focused ondirector that since the player has done some work for Vinewood getting props back. So maybe Michael and the online player will soon reunite. But that's just my theory on this.
i think that gta is based after the ud heist, before the characters are killed, but it's an alternate universe where the characters just grow without killing the main villains
I would love to see Rockstar Games make a new GTAO DLC that mentions or affiliates with the story mode characters that's based after the story mode. Like a Franklin mission where he needs help with something that is clearly based after the story mode. I would really love to see Rockstar work more on the story side of things to make it look and feel more organized, the way it is currently is all over the place, sometimes they don't know if it is based after the story mode, other times its before, or even during the story mode years. Maybe mention that some characters that died in story mode are now dead in the online timeline too. IDK, I'm more of a storyline type of person, but it would be cool to see if Rockstar worked on it more in the online timeline to try and make it more similar and feel like SP and Online are the same places with the same timeline. Online mode is clearly now after the SP timeline.

To put it simply any GTA Online update in 2013 through 2016 takes place before the story in 2013, 2017 and onward takes place when they come out, so our characters spent 4 Years just laying low and running our businesses until gunrunning
In a Casino Heist setup, where you steal armour from Humane Labs, the underwater grate is already cut, and Lester mentions that this route has been used before by Michael in Story Mode
Trevor's Heists are the source for his Meth Lab and Impotent Rage figure. Online is a progressing story, it starts 6 months before Single Player, Single Player happens while the Online player is busy running Import Export from their Exertive Office / running a biker gang. Gunrunning is definitelt post single player as is everything that follows it. The main issues are certain world changing elements from single player not being addressed, the On'Neil Ranch included, but Merryweather in particular.
I think it was 100% meant to be before the GTA V storyline and then Online got crazy successful so they decided to take the timeline post the storyline to add more futuristic things and missions that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Sometimes I even think that these heists were originally planned for a single player DLC based on a character other than the main 3.
This video put alot together, and in perspective(Kinda)(S.M Map changes aside, cause that is a huge overlook on the overall immersion with blending both modes time frames into one)👏👏👏R*. In the series A funding heist, Trevor leaves the figure of impotent rage by a tree which is the same tree you go to and recover said figure in the story mode later .
We could chalk up some of the destruction areas as something that was rebuild to their original state (drug house and Lester old building), replaced with replicas/same model (the sunken ship), or simple removed to clean up the environment (airplane under the sea) after the main story.
While doing Doomsday, Lester calls and says if they pull off killing Avon and Cliffford, they won't have to rob the U.D. and says the IAA will give them the keys.
In the Diamond storyline, tao cheng is alive but mentions an incident at the Country Club, referring to franklin murdering wei cheng in “The Third Way”
In on of the Diamond Casino Heist preps (Reinforced Armor) Lester says that someone had also went through the same grate at the Humane Labs before (Referencing the mission Monkey Business)
