Adam and I sit down for a chat and tell you the pros and cons and the overall is it worth having an apprentice, Electrical apprentice? / apprentice121 . Marks Instagram helping Apprentices
It helps when the apprentice is interested in actually learning, turns up on time without the attitude, listens to what is said. Clearly Adam has and Nick you as his mentor have a great relationship. I would’ve given my right arm to be given the opportunity at Adams age to do what he’s doing now. If the effort is put in then yeah pay rises, tools finish early why not look after your staff you’ll get the best out of them. Treat them like shit you’ll get shit work .
Apprentices are great. They can help you out so much. But you have to get the right one. As mentioned in the video, phones are a BIG thing for this generation and can spoil your working relationship. But get the right one and you are laughing. You obviously have with Adam. I've had a couple of great apprentices and a couple that I wouldn't pay in washers. Great video by the way
Great video Nick & Adam, OMG we have so much in common it's unreal, I also have my own Adam, he's a good lad and is really keen, like you I don't give my apprentice menial jobs, he's learning well and I will always stretch him, he's doing really well and it is starting to pay off now
Hi Nick and Adam! I would like to think that all apprentices were as good a match as the two of you, but I know that isn't the case. Having known each other for so long must be a big contributing factor to the success the two of you enjoy. Now Nick.....give the lad a good raise. You said it yourself, he's contributed so much to your success already.
I just love how Adam has come out of his shell. He was very embarrassed months ago and I did stop watching for a while but he's so much more confident now. Love it.
Really trying my hardest to get an apprenticeship this year to follow my dream of becoming an sparky! Having ended up working in a office for years with no job satisfaction. I think now I need that to see me to retirement age! Thanks for the video! Makes me want it even more!
Great video. I missed my chance to do an apprenticeship but am putting myself though college. Nearly completed my level 2 and will be continuing my level 3 in September. Looking to get some experience on site in the Stoke area, ideally at weekends due to work. Literally just looking to learn and gain experience and help out as much as I can. For free of course. Anything is appreciated.
I've found that some apprentices have it and others just don't. It's as simple as that . If you can find someone you know and have history with that has a bit of nouse and wants to learn ( be like you ) it's a joy when they've picked up how and why you structure and do your work . Fair shout lads you seem to be a right pair , I'm sure Adams gonna come out of his shell soon lol .
If all good apprentices were treated this way with respect and dignity we wouldn’t struggle to train up future tradespeople in this country and to finish there apprenticeship well done nick he’s a top lad Adam 👍
Best thing with Adam you can leave him with confidence on a rewire while you shot of and do small jobs,my first apprentice I had we had a great relationship and he learnt very quickly and was keen like Adam, was gutted when he had to give up from asthma .
making mistakes is part of learning Ive been in the trade since 1969!!! when a qualified electrician was eaarning 2/6d (12.5p) an hour Now going into retirement I still drop bollocks and still learning. You are a loveley couple of lads with posative attitudes and a cracking working relationship . Best of luck to ya !!!
Nick,.. you are so fortunate to have stumbled upon a young man like Adam who is " mustard keen" ... the likes of which are extremely rare in the UK currently,... most youngsters are useless , bone idle and on drugs... Adam is a keeper.... Good video, crack the fook on chaps 😄
I went for my apprenticeship trial working for free on Saturday afternoon with a one man band just like nick. Following Monday morning the trail was scrapped and the paper work signed. 26 years later I still work for the same company as the electrical compliance manager of a 40 strong team.
Lets cut to the chase, this country needs to be training more young people and making more products and stop thinking the country can run on serving burgers and coffee to over weight people.
Good interview. Can I recommend getting a couple of light coloured panels to put behind you - black clothes (except for the green fluorescent highlights) and black cap, dark hair against a black background makes for hard watching. Or are you going to make BDSM dungeon films...?
In my opinion I heard what they said and saw there faces so stop complaining about small things he’s not trying to be the next big thing he runs a business
There are so many companies out there that use apprentices as cheap labour. Then scrap them off when they are qualified, only to start all over with someone else. It's really refreshing to see that you both have the respect for each other.
As someone who is more of a customer for a lot of remodeling work, I've often not liked hiring people who work by themselves - except for very small jobs. A lot of work benefits from a second pair of hands - both in quality and safety.
I’m on an apprenticeship and my boss is still waiting on the grant as well. It was good to hear that because I’ve been wondering if my boss is doing me over. Apprenticeships are tough for the first year or two when your 17, 18 because until you’re 19 you’re not legally entitled to that pay rise. It really sucks but I’m learning a lot and I’m confident it’s paying off in the long run. Apprenticeships are the best way to learn a trade, hands down.
If I had my own company (I've thought about this a few times) I'd search for the right candidate myself , anytime I've been to say a greggs or supermarket i see very hard workers who are fast, polite and efficient I'd love to give them an opportunity With the right teaching and quidance they could be come a spark easily
Looking at the way you work together, your job turn-round times must be accelerating? Apprentices may well be a pure on-cost at the start but an apprentice like Adam must be adding to your turnover and profitability? The problem will come when he's fully qualified, what do you do then? Keep him on on full wages, bonuses etc or watch him go and try and find Adam 2?
I think the difference is having an apprentice that is keen and has a bit of nouse. Adam is amazing, he just cracks on and isnt afraid to get on with the job in hand, but there are those that dont have those kind of skills or are just doing the apprenticeship as it's the only route to their qualification. It works both ways in the relationship too. All too often apprentices are treated like the tea boy and that's partly why Adam has grown in the way he has....he's been allowed to make mistakes and do some of the things perhaps other apprentices wouldn't have the opportunity to. You both make a great team and he's grown so much in confidence and its lovely to see. Damn it Adam why couldn't you be 10 years older 😂
@Exploring With Dark Dreamz pretty much dream partner for me - ambitious and a hard worker. but I'm closer to Nick's age than Adams so never gonna happen - ah well 😆
@Exploring With Dark Dreamz yes i am aware. Nick has children and a wife so i know they aren't a couple 😂 I just think Adam is quite lovely to be honest 😊
Right. Treat your apprentices - and even unskilled helpers - like real workers and you'll get real work out of them! It's crazy how many employers don't understand that. Best guys I ever worked for as a contract helper were the ones who explained things to me and even listened to my thoughts; usually they'd tell me why my idea was bad - for _that job_ - but sometimes they'd decide it was good and help me develop it into a real plan for the site. They showed me what to do, had me do it with decreasing supervision, and eventually just told me what the site required and let me do it. Within 4 years some of them were being assigned as _my_ helpers! And they liked it! Because whatever the paperwork said, on-site we worked as a team. And that's all down to how "my" journeymen taught me and treated me. Not all helpers or apprentices - or even journeymen - can be trusted to work unsupervised. But give them a chance before you decide. Many of them will surprise you.
TO all trades, remember not all apprentices are equal, some are great some are a bit slow, just like us all,but somebody gave us all a chance, didnt they, so why not give a young lad or a girl a chance via a week on the tools for experience, and then look at taking them on or another person on as an apprentice ,and share your skills again like somebody did for us all. Give them a skill for life, a differnt workplace every day, no suit and tie to work, see new workplaces, meet people who will appreciate you and pay you, eg customers, gain social skills, and most importantly build a You tube empire, and become a you tube star.
I live in Manchester and have searching for an apprenticeship for about 6 months. Iv applied and phone a lot of electricians and have had no luck. I even got in touch with mark (apprentice101) and got no where.
Finally caught up. Been watching all your vids since discovering you a few months ago while studying for my 'Domestic Installer' qualification. Definitely going to be looking up your mate for someone willing to take on a brand new, middle-aged woman 🤪 Now off to check out sparks fly and Adam's channel 👍
Nobody in their mind is hiring a woman to work a trade. 😂 You might scrape a living servicing feminist slam poetry venues and battered woman’s shelters or whatever; or even find a spot as a token diversity hire with some giant construction firm with enough cash to burn on excess labour for the sake of ticking a woke box, but let’s be real: self employment will never happen. You simply cannot expect the general public to take a woman turning up at their door in a boiler suit with a fluke meter seriously.
Hello everyone as I'm here I though I might as well say that I am currently looking for a company to take me on as an apprentice so I can start the level 3 electrical instillation course this September. If your in the Bournemouth - Poole area or know of someone in the trade here , I would be very grateful if you could possibly send me any contacts I can get in touch with. Thanks for your time.
I think he'd be mad not too. Having a second pair of eyes on a job keeps everyone in check and certainly allows me to work faster as we discuss and agree a solution to problems rather than worry they are the wrong decision. A problem shared is a problem halved and all that
@@aidand4251 If you look on NICEIC and go to Home > Find a contractor. You can find dozens of contractors, domestic installers etc within 2 miles of your house depending on if you live in a built up area or not. Also if you're at college you should speak to your placement officer, tutor or careers advisor. Demonstrate you're keen and work will come to you. Also get your drivers license if you haven't already, it can be a deal breaker.
Thumbs up this comment if you think Adam should make a channel of his own as kind of, "The Life of an Apprentice". I certainly think he's an extremelly intelligent young man with alot ahead of him!!!
The apprenticeship cost company x thousand of pounds we have looked at it’s ridiculous. If you get someone like nick to train you properly it worth all the work an hours to set yourself up for the rest of your life. An you never stop learning because sometimes you have to think stupid what other people have done.
