Dan "Jungleman" Cates is an absolute madman, legendary for his gangster exploits on the felt. You just never know what this guy is capable of when it comes to making sick laydowns and thin calls. But when there are millions of dollars up top, can he REALLY let go of flopped trips in a spot like this?

Yea that is a great fold. That's a fold not concerned with payout pressure or intimidated, just a fantastic decision.
@herzwatithink9289
@herzwatithink9289 5 лет назад
It really is. Because the hand you're most likely losing to is the flopped boat. Added to the fact there are seven Ax's you're beating and one you're chopping with, only two suited aces (that aren't AQ/AK) you're losing to, and you're getting 4-1 your money. It's not a great board for a river bluff, but KQh and KJh are still possible.
@moonshine_blade8266
@moonshine_blade8266 5 лет назад
@@herzwatithink9289 did you watch the hand and listen what Jeff said? KJh not possible, look at junglemans hand. I guess jungleman thought his hand with his stack is so face up and commited to a call on the river that a bluff isnt really out there with that kind of player and any weaker ace will just call the riverbet instead of shoving, A3s, A6s, A9s, 33,66,99, are most likely, any better ace also is raising on flop or turn having a flush draw out there
@herzwatithink9289
@herzwatithink9289 5 лет назад
@@moonshine_blade8266 True, KQh only. Not true that players won't often shove a weaker ace on the river, especially given the stack sizes. Might be reckless, but they still do, and AT will be a value push for a lot of players. You can't say a river bluff isn't out there when jungleman folded. What you can say is it's unlikely he'd be doing it without something like KQh, with mid to high pair bluffs being unlikely once jungleman fires the third barrel. But I agree that you wouldn't want to assign much credence to pure river steals, and when it's a bad board for that anyway, it seems unlikely. I also agree that he really looks pot committed, which makes it even less likely. I don't know Phua, but he looks like a crazy Asian, and that complicates things. From my live play there are too many times crazy Asian players are wont to reraise pre-flop with 33 and 66 with position on the opener and I don't want that to be the case here, because those are two of the three hands I'm worried about by the time the dust settles. I'd originally thought jungleman was in the cutoff and Phua had the button, where 99, AQ and AK are almost obligatory three bets, so that changes things a fair bit, when even 99 and AQ are call/raise hands. I still think it unlikely Phua goes past the turn with 99, but it is possible. You're right that this is an incredibly disciplined fold.

Your videos have been a huge help for me. I've played maybe 7 or 8 live tournaments in my area. Buddy of mine got me into it. And I went from basically folding everything unless I was for sure to win just to last long enough to make it worth it to come out. To playing aggressive with a good mix of bluffs and guaranteed wins to create a nice stack and actually make it to the river to pull the card I needed.

the two ways to play this are as follows. When you get a bet into on the flop you can find out right there if he has an ace, and if he does you will get called with just about any raise or all in you throw out there. The other line is to just call like he did but when you all in on the river it becomes a tough spot for 3 aces because a lot more hands beat him, A with a K, Q, 6, 3, or 9, any pocket pair of 3s, 6s, or 9s that reasonably call on the flop, the only hand he's beating that would do this on the river is a missed flush draw, everything else simply would call it down for the showdown value. Probably best to min-raise at that point, pricing in your opponent, he ended up folding here to the allin, but maybe doesn't to a min raise.

I was surprised to hear Doug say that the 9 was a good card for Jungle. Because now he's losing to 99 and A9, and he's really just beating AT (as the announcers pointed out). And, AT seems unlikely to jam the river there. So he's really only beating bluffs, and he's losing to AK, AQ, A9, A6, A3, 33, 66, 99. What are the pure bluffs in Paul's range? Missed heart flush draws - that's it. It seems like Paul's value range contains a lot more combos than his bluffing range.

The fold is awesome but how about checking over on the river. Not much is calling here that is behind in this situation. Paul is an action player so I understand looking to play it straight forward to induce a bluff raise however if we check over we will probably get a good price on the pot and get to showdown possibly for the price jungleman laid initially, and if we call and were good then we get the pot. This was a great play, but like in chess when you see a good move look for a better one.

Paired board always brings possibility of a full house. Nice way to pimp when it happens, total bluffs win at times.. same with running cards or three suited cards on board

This would be a really hard hand for me if I were in Cates' shoes... Because I wouldn't think the opponent is that stupid to call with 33 preflop (I mean that is idiotic - calling 1/10th of a stack of the 20BB-stack with 33). Depending on the rest of the stacks to the left, the 33 is an instant raise all in for me pre. People making stupid plays makes the game really hard - hard to put them on a hand.

Paul gave away the strength of his hand when he asked how much jungle had left on the river

Asking how much somebody has left is usually a sign of weakness. So, unless you interpreted this as a blatant reverse tell, I don't know how you could interpret this as giving away the strength of his hand.

Phua helped the decision in my view... he acted super strong following Jungle's river bet.. his table talk also seemed to indicate strength. super sick fold from Jungle. I also wonder that since Jungle knows that Phua plays mostly short deck now, and those players pre-flop limp premium hands much more often, he judged it more likely that Phua may have AQ or AK in that spot.

wait why was it a good river shove? it's the nut low boat. doug said it like it's so obvious then doesnt explain it. he's only getting called by better... as was demonstrated in this hand too. A6, A9, 66, 99. literally no other hand calls him.

There's so few combinations that can beat 33 there though. The board has a missed flush draw and it's paired. Paul is quite capable of bluffing in that spot, putting a hand like, say pocket jacks in a horrible spot. When you have a boat, you get the chips in.

Great fold but I think the possibility of Phua ever bluffing that spot is almost zero. Sure he is a rich fish kind of player, but he plays with very good poker players for a lot of money all the time. He must have some understanding of the game. And that spot being a very very bad spot to bluff is part of such understanding. So I think Jungleman realizes that too.

TripleJack is a hell of a site (with tournaments and omaha) but it's on virtual chips not money.

On global you purchase coins and then you are given money to play on the site with for “free”. if you buy 10 dollars worth of coins you are given 10 “free” dollars worth of cash to play with. This is how they get around the law as far as I know. I’ve had good success so far and the cash outs are pretty simple
