I had a 2017 Sonata Sport with the same engine. I took excellent care of it like this one and it started burning some oil around 30k. I had been experiencing spark knock under moderate acceleration for over a year. At 66k, there was a valve seal leak and was repaired under warranty after a week at the dealership. The spark knock went away after the repair but soon came back. I loved this car but I knew that it wasn’t going to go the distance. I traded it in for a 2020 Camry. Not even half the bells & whistles as the Sonata but the difference in quality is very apparent.

I have the 2017 and at 45k miles I got the P1326 which is related to the recall. I took it to the dealer and they said updating the ECM and replaced fuel injectors fixed the problems they found. Since I am the second owner, it no longer has warranty and I still have two years left of payments. I am going to trade it in for a brand new 2021 Elantra to have that 10 year 100,000 mile warranty and deal with 5 years of payments. I rather have full warranty on a 5 year payment plan than to have no warranty and still have 2 years of payments. Especially when the car at 45k miles gave out error code P1326.

There was/is a batch of 2.4l engines that had a manufacturing defect and essentially if you get one and don't know about it you might be out thousands but if you go to the dealer they'll swap the engine out

They’re very inconsistent. My wife’s 2017 Kia Forte has been a fantastic car with zero problems. My 2017 Sonata burns oil so bad that there was nothing on the dipstick the last time I got my oil changed. It will probably need a new transmission before it hits 100K because it’s already shuttering in first and second gear.

I’ve had more than five Elantras, two of them were over 295k, one was sent to a junker because it had been leaking fluid out over time, and the other went into a rear end accident. Both of them, the transmissions were solid, both the 4-speed auto, and the five speed manual! Solidly build, the beta II engine is, but the Theta-II 2.4L engines are the ones to watch out for...

Hyundai makes amazing cars & my 2004 Elantra GT ran for over 600k miles before I got a 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate. I think he really needs to reexamine Hyundai.
