Thank you everyone who had a go here at winning MixBox. The winner has been notified. I wish I could give you all a free code but, I do also have a competition for a code for BLEASS Motion EQ and plenty more giveaways to come. Please stay tuned and thank you everyone for all the support and encouragement. Have an awesome day. :)
Win a code! To win a free code for MixBox, simply comment below telling me how many different stringed instruments I play in this video. Also, please give the Vid a thumb up and make sure you’ve subscribed to my channel. Everyone who gets the answer correct will go into the hat. On 17.12.2020. at 12pm UK time I will notify the winners, who will be pulled out of the hat randomly by my kids. Best of luck!
Thank you very much for allowing us to actually hear how different instruments and vocals really sound through the ik MixBox powerful system. What a studio engineering experience is deposited in it and now given into our hands. I feel really enriched. Btw the song 👏👏👏👏👏. All the best to you. Looking forward to more very interesting and inspiring content from you, Sir. You used 8 different stringed instruments.
Thank very much for watching and commenting. I honestly feel that this app proves the power and capability of the iOS platform. I’m really excited by it.
Wow, thank you for the compliment dude! So nice of you to say. I got the code later than everyone else it seems so I thought, I’ve missed the rush to get out a vid nice and early so, I’ll try and compensate by doing something as good as I can manage for a first look at the app.
@@JamieMallender You're always welcome Jamie. Don't be put off by some of the comments on the Audiobus forum. It's a dilemma in a way but you argue it very coherently and I'm totally with you. I wish you and your channel all the best and strong growth.
@@JamieMallender That's me, doesn't take much to make the connection! I used to be TheVimFuego around here but didn't feel like hiding behind an alias anymore. Stand by what you say is my new thing. Tell the truth, or at least don't lie. ;)
9 stringed things all sounding nicely processed w the Mixbox. Man I really love that bass. It’s got great fender tone with a little extra mid range heft and nice to look at as well.
Thanks so much for taking the time to check out my video Jade, I really appreciate it. Totally agree about the noise gate. I did tell IK what I thought about that and they did say they’d look at it so.... fingers crossed! Hey Jade, I hit 900 subs today. Party!
@@JamieMallender yeah I definitely let them know on the noise gate also. Congrats on 900 you deserve many many more as your content is really nice! Won’t be long before that 1k is long in the distance!! Cheers and congrats!!
Really enjoyed watching this video. What a great multi-instrumentalist you are! Even tho this app is expensive, seems to be really great bang for the buck! 9 is the number I hope. Thanks for doing this and thanks for offering your expertise!
You’re right Jeff, it’s definitely expensive for an iPad app, but at the same time, I promise it really is well worth it. Thank you so much for watching.
Thank you very much. It’s really nice when someone takes time to comment. If you like my music I am gradually moving all of it to bandcamp. Jamiemallender.bandcamp.com
Great video, nice to hear all those strings. I counted 8 that I could see you playing in the body of the video (assuming the bass & sitar in the intro & outro were the same instruments as used in the body of the review!)
Looks very nice, sounds great, and an excellent demonstration of its versatility and quality. Thanks! I counted 9 stringed instruments. (Loved the mandolin and the cigar box btw) :)
I love the mandolin too. I love the fact that the strings are in reverse order from a guitar so you have to think upside down. The CBG is one of my favourite things to play. I love that sound! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Have a great day.
That was a good demo of some of the included presets and what they’re capable of doing to your sound.. The drums were beefier.. Bass, guitars + EP all had usable sounds right off the bat.. I like the vertical (500 series) rack style of this.. would love to have this in reality.. could you imagine the cost? 🤪 You’re a talented musician Jamie.. multi-instrumentalist.. multi-skilled.. and can sing to boot.. you’d be a major asset in any band and/or recording session.. 👍 Now, as far as how many different stringed instruments you played in the video.. that can be perceived in a couple different ways.. My take.. I count 5 different familys of stringed instruments.. 9 actual different instruments played.. The EP is the wild card here.. it’s actually an app, not a real stringed instrument that you played.. So you could be down to 4 familys + 8 instruments.. 🤷♂️ 1.Bass (1 fretted, 1 fretless) 2.Guitar (1 electric, 2 acoustics, 1 electric sitar) 3.Mandolin 4.CBG 5.Electric Piano (House Mark I) So, my answer is 5.. and 9.. OR 4.. and 8.. depending on how you look at it.. 😁 Thanks for the demo.. 👍
Thank you very much, I appreciate the compliment and thank you for watching and taking time to comment. The potential of this rack to shape your sound in a creative way is pretty stunning but what really impresses me about it is the sheer sound quality. It really takes the iPad into a very pro musical territory. Best of luck with the competition and take care. :)
Absolutely stellar video Jamie! Loved how you went through a bunch of instruments. I’m getting amazing tone and quality from this. Soo glad this is on iOS!
I think I saw 9 stringed instruments in this video, but most importantly I heard a multitude of processed timbres coming from each one. Heck of a toolkit you’ve demoed here. Sounds incredible, but its price tag has me wondering when I will afford it.
great too as you play a variety of instruments and vocals through this app!!! very versatile video that shows a great deal of what it can do!! i’m counting 9 strings! thanks for the video and chance to win
Really versatile app and a versatile video. You are using 8 different string instruments as far as I can tell and counted 👊🏼 thanks for making your video and hosting a code giveaway! 🙃👍🏼
Forlornly adding 9 to the mix in the form of the amount of guitars you have. As a drummer mainly, I am not usually swayed by pretty axes, but your collection is impressive. Loved your blues boxy er guitar thingy
Great video. Tempted to get mixbox but worried my old ipad air 2 is not up to it . How Cpu hungrey is it based on your experience? Don't want to waste my money as it is quite pricey if I cannot run more that a couple of instances in aum. Keep up the great work. Learnt so much from your videos.
Hmmmm.... I don’t have an air 2 to test it with but I do have an air 1. What iOS are you on? I’ll run you a test. On my iPad 2017 with about 3 instances on 3 AUV3 instruments it runs fine, but after that it gets a bit close to overload depending exactly what instruments I’m using and what’s in each rack. If you’ve got a chain of 7 fx in one but 2 in another it balances out.
@@JamieMallender. Hi appreciate the response. I’m still running v13.7 as worried some of my older apps, Cubasis 2 in particular, will stop working properly if I apply the v14 update.I cannot afford a new Ipad or upgrading to Cubasis 3 and it not working well on the Air 2.
9. Thanks for the offer, and thanks for getting your kids into the act too! I'll just add that I bought this, got buyer's remorse and a refund and am now on the fence. I'll wait to see if I win (unlikely I know) and then will maybe think again about rebuying it especially as I'd want to do so before it doubles in price after the intro period (whenever that ends).
I understand that it is an outlay. It’s not cheap. And the fact that it’s great value doesn’t change that. All the best dude, fingers crossed - maybe you’ll get lucky.
Really amazing overview and great app for sure! Nine stringed instruments are played. Jamie, please tell me what you use to record to your iDevice, what is the interface?
Thank you. I use the iTrack Dock by Focusrite. I’ve had it a few years and really like it but it is obsolete and unsupported now. I’m looking at replacing it with something soon. Not sure what yet. I’ve been looking at the Scarlett stuff and also the iRig stuff.
Such a talented guy, I reckon 9 strings? Yes I agree we need the big companies to support IOS to ensure it becomes the musician choice of digital editing.
Hi Jamie ! New subscriber here. Great demo 👍🏻 We, guitarists, definitely need to see our instrument(s) more used in iOS apps demos. I'm still on the fence for this MixBox because I already have SO SO many FX apps on my iPad that, if not for the easy on the eyes UI, I can't really see what it offers that I can't do easily in a lot of ways... I so would be very curious to try (and surely enjoy) it if I'm lucky enough to win your code 😁... You play 9 stringed instruments in this video 👍🏻
Thank you for watching and taking time to write a comment. I do know what you mean but I do also believe that the quality on offer here is superior to most other iOS FX. I am a big fan of the Nembrini guitar stuff though - MixBox and Nembrini, and Mammoth for bass - it’s a stunning combination.
I never knew about it either ... I was watching a RU-vid tutorial video last night and the guy dropped this into the effects slot on AUM. I was like whaaaaat ??? Ha ha ! Deffo purchase on Payday with Flip.
9 yes Jamie it's a game change it sounds brilliant. Don't forget you can get free presets if you register with ik, thanks for the video another brilliant one to the collection👍
I counted 9 instruments and I agree, this is a serious app and it's worth the price. I actually bought it and like it a lot. Wouldn't mind a code though to gift it to a friend who can't afford too many apps we are blessed with on our beloved platform.
@@JamieMallender I feel the same. This is a desktop grade app on the the iOS platform that actually runs fine. LFO in app is the only thing really missing. I already mailed IKM about this and I hope they will address this in an update. I have a lot of really great effect apps that I don't want to miss but right now I'm just in awe with MixBox as it can do so much. The price may scare some people, it certainly scared me :D ... but you do get very useful effects and so many possible use cases. It is an exciting time for iOS music producers.
It certainly is. I can’t help but feel that it really is our time now. I agree about the LFO thing. I’ve found they’re very open to discussing the app and possible development. It’s all good!
The CBG is one of my favourite things. It’s a really cool thing to play. I use a thick glass slide , I can’t use the metal ones I use on the guitar. But also, it sounds really cool fingerpicked.
Thank you Stephen. The baby sitar doesn’t have the extra strings. Danelectro released the original sitar guitar under the Coral brand name. The idea being that Coral would be recognised as their expensive brand. Not long after they made the gourd shaped baby sitar which was much cheaper and so sold a lot better. This is a reissue from a few years ago but made to original spec.
I saw you play 8 different stringed instruments during the video. 9 if you count the picture at the end with the sitar. Enjoying your videos, and channel. Would love to win a IK mixbox code, Cheers.
I can’t compare the 2 because I don’t have the desktop stuff. I’ve used it in a studio and liked it but I wouldn’t be able to do a comparison vid. Shame, that could be a cool vid I guess.
@@JamieMallender Yes. (Well I'm pretty sure they must be almost identical because coding two different products would be too expensive. And other companies (Eventide, Sugar Bytes) also use the same strategy.)
I counted 8 in the vid although there was another sitar playing in the intro and in the background at one point... I’ll stick with 8 though as it was a sitar and you weren’t actually seen to be playing it in the vid. What a great big/little app 👍🏼
@@JamieMallender Thankyou serf 👑 Well I’m still sticking to 8, if you’re including your bass guitar. I know you played a sitar in the vid, but there was another sitar in the intro and in the background. I didn’t include those 😏 For a serf, you can’t ‘arf play guitar ❤️
Thank you very much. The app is good on resources considering how much power it has. My iPad is only a 2017 5th gen ordinary iPad, but inside Cubasis 3 I can usually have MixBox open 3 times. Depends how many modules are included in each sound
@@JamieMallender Thanks. This really help, I have an iPad Pro 2017 and wondered before buying the app. Nice sounding but unsusable effect box would have been point less. Didn’t know your channel, subscribing. Thanks.
I did not purchase it because it is costly. But after watching your video I have decided I should have it. Really it may be game changer. But before that I would like to know the cpu load. I use 2020 ipad pro 8/256 gb and a ipad mini.
Thank you very much for watching. The resources consumed by MixBox depend entirely on how many modules you open in it. I only have a 6th gen basic iPad. If I’m using AUM or Cubasis 3 I can use 3 instances of MixBox with a few modules in each without much trouble - obviously it depends what else I have in the project but I tend to get my instruments mixed down to real audio before starting to add fx - meaning I can use the full power of MixBox.
@@JamieMallender Thank you for guidance. I will buy this app soon. Actually I use bias fx 2. But in AUM bias app creates problem. For singing I use IK's Vocalive and vocal soloist and Harmonizer by 4 pockets. Now I can understand Mixbox will be very helpful.
@@JamieMallender it was on my friends iPad he has got cubasis 2 as well. It put me off buying it because I thought I will have problems as well because I use cubasis 2. But hopefully they will fix it before I get it👍
@@JamieMallender I have found out the reason why it keeps crashing on Cubasis 2 I have noticed if you have about 19 affects doesn't matter how many mixbox you've got on there as long as you don't pass 19 effects. as soon as you do it will crash. I have had about 7 mixboxs running. With no more than 19 effects on. and it has been fine but if you go any more than 19 effects doesn't matter how many mixbox you've got on then it will crash. It's not because the CPU cannot handle it it's just because the CPU jumps right up to the end and crashes all the effects. It will probably depend on what iPad you've got. With mine it's 19. But no more than that because if you close cubasis down and reopen it they will load in or ok but the CPU will jump up and crash them all.
Dunno about string instruments, but there were a lot of guitars, lol, like nine i think? Although not sure if that round baby of banjo and sitar calls itself a guitar too...good stuff. DOn't forget to have my name in that hat too ;)
I do love things with strings! I meant to play my banjo but I totally forgot. 😂 I could’ve carried on all day, I was having a great time! Thank you for watching. :)
@@JamieMallender How are these for electronic music you think? I don't own any "real" instruments and using Drambo these days, do they sound good on more 'abstract' stuff?
Very good question. I really like the way a basic piano or simple synth can be transformed into something new with this rack. I too enjoy experimental electronic music but I figured other RU-vidrs would focus more on the electronic side so I thought I’d do the stringy things and simple keys stuff. Many of the FX are capable of quite extreme parameters so I’ll definitely be digging further into that. I expect exciting results.
Real nice video Jamie! Deleted my earlier comment bc i might have been a bit harsh on IK, and i don’t wish to pissy pants about lol. Btw i don’t need a code, i already own this awesome app. But yes a tuner would be lovely! And a noise gate as well 😉
I believe MixBox could easily be the best EXTERNAL processing unit. Let me explain. It would be good to compare the price of an old iPad plus digital audio interface. With Family Sharing, one could install Mixbox to up to 6 iPads. What you get is a highly versatile effect processor with upgradeable SW and gorgeous display.
if we have 30 - 40 tracks, and if we put 30 - 40 instance of mixbox, how the performance of ipad I have 2019 ipad with 32gb ram, please let me know your thoughts.
If I remember correctly, that iPad has 3gb Ram and 32gb storage. I don’t have that model but I know it won’t take 30 to 40 instances of MixBox. I haven’t done such a test but doubt my 2021 pro could handle that or a typical desktop. What you would do is add a few instances and then freeze those tracks, freeing up DSP and then add more instances, freeze those etc..
It seems a lot of money for an iOS app I agree. But then each effect is costing less than a pound when you work it out - and every effect is better quality than almost everything else available on the platform - so, it’s a lot of money but still good value.
I really like them. I don’t have one because I have a deal with Vintage and Fret-King but if I didn’t, that might be a bass I’d consider. I’m also very fond of Yamaha.
Thank you! Yes, I’ve found that to be very much the case. And the better you do, the nastier they get. It doesn’t bother me a whole lot but sometimes I really do wonder what they get out of it.
