There's much more to it than that. Look up and watch Dr. Ben Bikman. Insulin signals your fat cells to store glucose as fat. Minimize insulin, let's say by eating fats and protein without carbs, and no fat storage can occur. Now, if you want to decrease adipose tissue, you'll need to go to a caloric deficit to allow glucagon, the regulatory opposite of insulin, to induce lipolysis and reduce the fat stored in the adipose tissue. It's more the hormone at play than the calorie count.

I've learned one thing: never get dietary advice from someone who didn't struggle in his life with food cravings and hunger. People that talk about counting calories but never mention the psychological side of sinking the teeth into mouth-watering food. They are humans like me, but clearly have a completely different way to deal with food before, during and after eating, so their advice is totally irrelevant for me. Pity that it took me thirty years to understand it.

@herstrengthcoachingwithvic1823
@@chrisdawson3859 It's a matter of combining protein and carbs not just eating carbs alone of course you going to be hungry, but if you want to maintain that muscle you do need more carbs also, check out many body builders, lots that I know eat large amounts of protein as well as carbs. Women need carbs if they are going through perimenopause and beyond, it can cause so many issues with hormones if you are not eating the right carbs. I am thankful that I found sensible information when I first went low carb in October 202. I didn't and still don't count anything, and to start with was eating allowable snacks when I got hungry. Not long after I was able to stop the snacks. I remitted my diabetes in less than 3 months and without even trying went from 80kg down to 58kg, which is what I weighed in the mid 1980s before I had children. I am now metabolically healthy. Being fat adapted makes life so much easier. I used to have to eat within 1/2 when I truly got hungry before low carb otherwise I would get the shakes and get "hangry".

French greens 1 lb steamed with a tablespoon of I think teriyaki sauce or something, A little bit of salt, I ate that back one I wasn't doing keto because I figured it would fill me up and keep my blood sugars from crashing an hour later I was super hypoglycemic and got a donut to correct the issue. I do not buy that bull crap of the longer lasting fibers will keep your blood sugar stable. The teriyaki sauce was only 6 to 15 carbs The French Greens were mostly fiber If what this dude is saying is true I should have not had a blood sugar crash. Ever since keto even doing OMAD day one on keto because my meal was six eggs and a pound of ground beef I never had hypoglycemia again never happened. 3-day fast because I didn't get hungry not because I planned it, At an active job where I worked at a taco shop that was understaffed... No hypoglycemia. The problem with nutritional science is that people that have never been obese never been incredibly unhealthy are talking out of their ass about things they've never experienced and then telling people that have those experiences that they're lying or not doing it correctly while ignoring that going the high carb route there are a thousand nuances and little things that are important to know and going the no-carb route is pretty much a straightforward and simple as it can get. Don't drive on a winding mountain road with no guardrails if you can just drive through a tunnel that goes straight through the middle of the freaking mountain.

Also it seems to me his paradigm centers around the bodies metabolic rate being STATIC when in fact it is a variable. If you just lower the calories without the body being able to SWITCH to fat burning then it will be forced to lower your metabolism to match the lower calories coming in. Insulin is the trigger that makes that switch when high you are burning mainly carbs when low the body turns to burning mainly your fat stores. When you are burning your fat stores you have breakfast lunch an dinner all on tap (keto) which is why you don't get hungry as much and the body can just use more of your fat stores to MATCH your calories out and so does not need to lower your metabolic rate. So as you suggest his approach is too simplistic and so will only work with a narrow band of people whose metabolic rate can go down without that being a problem.ie young healthy active people with a high metabolic rate. As per the comment below Jason Fung and yourself clarifies this very well.

Cells have the Randle Cycle and Insulin resistance is a concept more than a thing - there are no meters or tests you can do to test your insulin resistance. If you are fat adapted and well fed, you will be resistant to sugar because the cells are replete and you will also be fat resistant for the same reason - carbs/ blood glucose will remain in the blood and cause glycation of the blood - hence a raised HBA1C on a keto diet because sugar stays in the blood longer - Dr Paul Mason has some good stuff on this, as does Prof Bart Kay

“Food Energy” is a more correct term than mass or calorie. Calorie has a specific scientific definition that doesn’t apply inside a human body, and, despite some scientists’ effort to talk about food mass as opposed to calories, food energy is still better, bc rather than a a static term describing a physical property of food, it’s general and and non-specific, bc each of us hormonally responds to the same amount of calories differently.

I lost 70lb by going plant based and giving up simple carbs and saturated fat. I’m a 66yo runner and started CrossFit to add upper body muscle mass. Now, I’m deliberately weight back on, also eating fish to get protein to 170, I can’t go back to land animal protein as my ldlc was 190 (even when I was skinny), it’s now mid 70’s). It’s been hard not to fixate on the scales as I spent 18 months fixating on losing 0.2lb/day and weighing myself twice/day. At 155lb I was told I look like a concentration camp victim, now I’m 175 and considerably more muscled but knowing I’ve put on 20lb after working so hard to lose all that weight really is a mental dilemma. I’m always tempted to get back on the scale and see how much heavier I am now, but, then I’d diet again and lose the muscle mass that I’ve tried so hard to put in to stave off sarcopenia and old age frailty. I feel like narcissus, I spend an unhealthy amount of time in front of the mirror trying to figure out if it really is muscle or fat. Losing weight is very hard, surprisingly, putting back on “just the right amount” is mentally much harder.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my pancreas. It was about the carbs and sweets. My levels are fine now…so it was high carb and stress that did it. And I work with many people…slim and overweight, like that.

@azarialr6639

I had that issue. Came from standard to keto, and learned the 1g of protein per pound of lean mass, and looked up the protein content of the meats, eggs etc I was eating and found out I was eating less than half of my bodies required protein. Increased my protein to reach that minimum by going back to three meals briefly, and weighing protein, then after a week and a half went back to two meals(when I could comfortably eat that amount in two meals). I ate all protein first then anything else, and wound up eating almost no carbs, but feel much better. The other thing I found was my weight loss had stalled as I was in starvation mode, once I started eating more I dropped weight easily.

Is this the conclusion I am supposed to draw? That those who eat less higher nutrient dense, higher caloric food is more conducive to weight loss than those who eat more lower nutrient dense, lower caloric food because the former is more satiating than the latter and those people will thus eat fewer calories in the long run? People claim that a vegan diet will cause fat loss as will a carnivore diet. But are the health benefits the same? Are both equally sustainable? I would answer NO. I mean how can any amount of fruits and veggies, etc. that you would have to eat to equal the nutritional value of one steak be considered equal? Both diets being equal cannot be true...so where is the tautology?

Calories in, calories out is bad science. It is a physics problem for a physiological problem. For people who are obese, all this really means is eating the proper amount of calories for your ideal weight. Most people who are obese are eating more than 5,000 calories a day of sugar and garbage. 2000 calories of carbs are not the same as 2000 calories of fat and protein, and we can see in the carnivore community that people eat a lot af calories, until the meat no longer tastes good, but are still losing weight and hitting equilibrium.

Side note: I _detest_ listening to podcasts and videos where the producer has cut out all the breaths (like this one you’re reviewing). It’s a stupid notion, and it makes listening to it very disturbing. When I come across a podcast or video produced that way, I immediately shut it off and move on to one I can listen to without feeling hypoxic! Thanks for not doing this with yours. This would be irrelevant, but I think it speaks to his trying to raise the energy level by hitting you with supposed “facts” so fast that you don’t have time to consider them, and just swallow them whole (uncritically)!

Meat is the most nutrient dense food, especially if you eat organ meats. That’s the big secret big food and pharma don’t want you to know. The only supplements I take is organ meat supplements, vitamin c, and vitamin d. Don’t need fiber, don’t need sugar, and don’t need any other food. Never felt better and my bloodwork is better than ever - and improving! Plus, I have zero arterial plaque from being carnivore and kidneys work perfectly. Being a good doctor requires knowledge of medicine and an ability to communicate. Dr. Westman, please learn to communicate the state of ketosis. How can someone be on a keto diet and not be in ketosis? Only someone with a complete lack of knowledge of the English language can call a diet "keto" without ketosis.

The analogy of cash in the wallet and in the bank is a poor analogy to use, because everyone wants to SAVE cash, but nobody wants to SAVE extra body fat: we want to LOSE the body fat. So it is too confusing to say to think of energy like cash. It doesn't help normal people to think about that analogy.

Amino acids are used for building things. Fatty acids are used for building things. Carbs are like gasoline/petrol in a hybrid car. They cannot be used for anything other than fuel, either now, or after they are stored in different ways, later. Left over amino acids can be used as fuel, but don't have to be, and are hard for the body to use that way. Fatty acids can be used as fuel and the body actually prefers to use them that way, and is quite good at using them in a healthy body. Again, carbs can ONLY be used for fuel. Once a cell has all the fuel it needs to operate it doesn't want any more. If you keep eating carbs and all your cells are fully fueled its like trying to put more gasoline/petrol in a full tank, it just doesn't work. But high glucose is dangerous to the blood vessels so the body has to force it into the cells. Imagine if your overfull fuel tank overflowed INTO the car. This can't be allowed, it has to be prevented, so the body makes more and more insulin trying to protect you from the high blood glucose and force more fuel into already full tanks. Just cut the carbs and and the problem is solved! Even when you run out of carbs, the body will continue to run on fat! Remember, you are a hybrid machine that can run on more than one fuel, and the better, more efficient fuel is fat. I'm not saying that no one should ever eat sugar or carbs, but if you are overweight, and insulin resistant, or type 2 diabetic you need to leave the carbs alone. It's just that simple, and anyone who denies it is either ignorant or stupid. Either way you should not be taking advice from them.

Nearly 20-30% of dietary protein metabolized in the liver is oxidized for energy (not "can be used as fuel"). Likely more in low-carb (thus higher protein) situations. But hey "there is always more to the story you can't help anyone, not even yourself".
@jimbrogan9835
@jimbrogan9835 3 дня назад
@@drmarcmethod Since I never claimed the body couldn't or wouldn't oxidize excess amino acids once all other needs were met I really don't get what you are driving at. I find the number you're stating more than a little bit excessive, though. Do you have any scientific studies to back it up, or did you just pull it out of your ***? I don't claim to be a doctor or a scientist, but I can read a study as well as anyone. So far the only thing you've proven yourself qualified to be is a troll. Bye troll.

Yes, calories matter. That doesn't mean macro nutrients DON'T MATTER. The macro nutrients, and nutrients that you take in have been proven to effect your basal metabolism, body composition, and energy levels, greatly effecting the "calories out" part of the equation. It's like saying the fuel going in your car is equal to the fuel burned by your car. DUH! It ignores all the things that can be done to effect how fuel efficient your car is. If your car needs a tune up and you just fuel it more often, that doesn't make it run better. If your car needs new parts and you pour gasoline on the effected part, that won't fix the problem. Sometimes stating the obvious, doesn't make you a genius, but an idiot. If you don't understand that there is always more to the story you can't help anyone, not even yourself.
