Thanks Ivana and Steve for making this video ! It is great to see someone introducing Ipoh. This bakery place you visited is famous for that particular bakery / biscuit . The local people only buy this type of biscuit from them instead of buying from the stores in Ipoh city.

Time 21:58 Bean curd - Think about yogurt which is congulated milk. Like milk is protein, soy beans are plant based protein, so you are eating some things like yogurt but is made from soy milk. now consider Tofu is like cheese in more solid form (which you have problems eating it on the other video). And there is also Tofu Puff (puffy fry tofu) which you find it in your curry noddles. Soy sauce is completely under a different categories, its under condiments such as fish sauce that process through fermentation process with salts.

It was very interesting to see these foods from Ipoh. I had never heard of the Heong Peah biscuit or the salted chicken before. It was good to learn about them. And, about Ipoh's place, along with Penang and Kuala Lumpur, among Malaysia's top food destinations. It seems that there is a strong Chinese/Cantonese influence in the cuisine there. Which, to me, is interesting as well...Thank you for this video.

Taufufa is originated from China. The Malaysian version is closer with Southern Chinese version which are sweet and usually served with sugar syrup or other kind of sweet toppings and nuts. Northern Chinese version are savoury and served with pickled vegetables and chilli oil.

Tofu Fa is Soya bean milk pudding. It is soya bean milk coagulated into pudding form. Tasteless on its own. Therefore always served with syrup which can be plain white sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, palm sugar and/or flavored with ginger. It is served as a dessert along with other side additions. Like the chewy yellow pumpkin flavored rice balls & refreshing herbal black jelly shreds/cubes which locals called "cincau".

Is Ipoh the new food capital of Malaysia? The answer is YES if you are in Ipoh. Otherwise if you are in Penang then Penang it is or if you are in Melaka then Melaka it is or if you are in Sarawak then Sarawak it is and so on and so on as long as you are still in Malaysia. Only those who have travelled well in Malaysia will know what I mean. 😂😂

Steve, you’re so hilarious about tofu. It’s made very similarly to cottage cheese. Dried soybeans (also known as edamame) are soaked in water, crushed and then boiled. The pulp and the milk are separated and the milk is treated with salt coagulants that separate the curds from the whey. I use a cheese cloth to get rid of the excess moisture… then voila you have tofu. Hope that helps you overcome your fear of it lol

0:03 in malaysia, gems are always found in these shabby place (at least from the outside appearance). i love heong beng, but i never found out which one is the best. different ppl has different preference. i did once eat a heong beng that i like so so very much, but the person who bought it still hasn't give me the location yet... argh.... anyways, these heong beng, they have the lard version and the vegetarian version. for me, lard version tastes waaaaaayyyyyy better. 😁 9:13 i am from sarawak, i have been living in west malaysia for 30+ years, and still is not used to dark soy sauce dry mee. i still prefer the one with no dark soy sauce, taste way better. sorry west malaysian...😁 23:54 did you notice how short and chubby the bean sprouts are? only in ipoh. btw, i dont go to the chicken shop on the more touristy street after my friend introduced me to the one at Buntong. Heong Peah bun look similar like Kompia(some called it Konpiang or Guang Pia) in Sarawak. Maybe different dialect. The popular one is from Sibu, which is also my hometown. It typically got 2 types, sweet and salty. And they soft too, and not flaky like the one in the video. Also no filling inside. I much preferred the sweet one, and I usually like to dip it in my tea or coffee.

haha. Chinese have a very long history with food. They improvise from a ingredient into many things. like soy bean, become soy sauce, dark sauce, dried beancurd, soybean pudding, soybean as a food itself and many more. soybean curd or I called it soybean pudding or "tao fu fa", is something like a dessert. we can eat it warm in winter that warm our heart, eat it cold which sweeten your heart. whenever & wherever you see Chinese community, tao fu fa will be there. Tao fu fa is pretty easy to make, all u need is just hot soy milk, calcium sulphate, and ginger + ginger syrup as a side. or hot soy milk, mix with ginger concentrate + sugar syrup / westerner can use maple syrup as a side. @Steve really can pronouce the "Aun Kheng Lim" like a Chinese.
