The Lepai LP1601S is Lepai's latest amplifier and fits in the higher end of mini home amps. It sells for just under $100 USD and is stated to be a "200 watt Class D amplifier", yet the manual states the amp is capable of 160x2 at 10% THD. Class D design offers high efficiency and decent sound quality in a small package. The amp has RCA and Bluetooth capability and can drive most speakers for room-filling sound. Back to the wattage ratings, you know we are going to test and see what it really does...let's find out together!

the included PSU is 32V @ 3A, or 96watts, so the fact that you could get close to 150watts out of it before the overcurrent limit kicks in is pretty impressive. I also expect there was some sag in it's output voltage at that power level as well. I bet if you ran at 70W/ch you'd see the brick get very hot, and probably shutdown on thermal at some point. at 32V input to get 320Watts out you'd need 10A input.

Most impressive to me is that each channel is so close, to spot-on watts equally. I'd never run it to max, so the THD would be a lot lower at reasonable listening levels.

In amps for sale in the EU, the binding posts are not allowed to be spaced according to the spacing required for dual banana plugs, because some European power cords with round pins use exactly the same spacing, and the profoundly efficient rule-makers in the EU government don't want people getting the two confused with each other. So even most new high-end amplifiers don't use the standard spacing.

internally it looks just like the FX-AUDIO FX1602s (FX1002A + bluetooth) these use ST TDA7498E chips so figure 80 WPC into 4 ohms at under 0.1% THD when fed with 36VDC, gain is (usually) switchable internally from 23.6/29.6/33.1/35.6 dB. A 36v 5A supply would be ideal, a good rule of thumb is never go past 50% of a Class D's claimed output if you care about fidelity ;)

Yeah, the PSU can output an absolute maximum (on paper) of 108w. It won't, or shouldn't, be a problem for music since you're not playing pink noise at maximum volume, and the likelihood is, the capacitors in the PSU will allow higher current/wattage bursts to handle the transients in music.
@MrSookonn

Psu is 96w and how can you measure thd with pink noise? Getting 2x76w from that with 1% thd is absurd.

Do the Texas Instruments TPA3116 chips work the same way? I purchased a 100 x 2 Bluetooth 4.2 mini amp with dual TPA3116 chips. this things is a bridge type amplifier, so on the chip internally its has 4 amplifiers module, so for 1 channel, using 2 amplifiers that bridged or commonly known as BTL, it can provide 2 times the power, and yes, they only provide it with 32v 3A power supply, and that's not enough if you want to use it at its max rating, just buy another cheap power supply that can provide at least 250W output power
@tomkocur
@tomkocur 5 лет назад
@@clee2423 whether it's bridged or not doesn't make any power. You can't get more than 2x40W from 32V 3A power supply. Increasing amperage of the power supply won't help that much, either, output power is a function of input voltage.
@clee2423
@clee2423 5 лет назад
@@tomkocur yeah i know you cant get more than 96w from that power supply, but you can get more than it if you use higher amperage of power supply, and if the amplifier on bridged mode, you can get more power, just search for BTL and you gonna understand
@clee2423
@clee2423 5 лет назад
@Stimpy&Ren the only factor that limit the amps is the power supply that they come with, but if you buy power supply that can give more amperage, you can get more power from the amps, and i know it does not give you more amps, but you need more amps from the power supply to get more power from amplifier that use BTL

@kenwebster5053 4 года назад
Yeah, 160 W at 10% THD is well outside the usable linear range. It's a cheat to inflate the true power of the amp which can be anything depending how it's calculated. It's the most unreliable and abused spec in the industry. There are amps specked at thousands of watts that struggle to make 100W of useful output. THX spec is at 0.1% THD. THX is a standard commonly used in the Cinema, AV & PA industry these days not all products are certified but using the standard tells you something. There used to be terms like music program power, continuous power etc which are commonly found on older amps and still on some new ones. You have to be careful with specs, these qualifiers are very important. If a product is not using them or using the wrong standard, assume the manufacturer is trying to hide the truth and pass it by. Use Wiki and only buy gear that is specked with the correct qualifiers, indicating the manufacturer is being straight with you. With over 30 years in PA and a longer interest in HiFi, I absolutely would not buy this product. Also, while class D is very efficient, it really doesn't have the resolution of class A or AB amps. Class D is fine as a low bass, sub or mobile gigging/street amp though, just not for quality top end in fixed venue systems such as auditoriums, or listening rooms. Depends a bit of course, if you think lossy formats like MP3 are great sources, then go for it. If you appreciate analogue, lossless or even HRA sources, then no.
@gordthor5351
@gordthor5351 5 лет назад
32volts x 3amps= 96watts total (including losses and no amp is 100% efficient). There is no such thing as "magical" free energy, yet all cheap amp manufactures make up ridiculous numbers that just aren't possible. Even testing at 10% distortion with 1 channel driven is a bullshit spec, because 10% distortion sounds like ass and who uses only one speaker.

I'm amazed, for the price, it looks quite well built! It even has Japanese and German capacitors, Elna, Nippon Chemi-Con, Panasonic and WIMA. There is a lot of excess flux though, I guess it's that "no clean" flux by the looks of it since it is crusty like marks from powder sprinkled over the board. These amps are almost always limited by the voltage and current available from the power supply. Also, power for these commodity chips is normally rated at 10% THD. Class-D chips tend to have very low THD up to a "knee" where the onset of clipping occurs, then they rise rapidly, but the benefit of this is that the 1% or 0.1% THD power output is not very much less than the rated power rating. Also, your speakers are usually generating much more THD than the amplifier, even at the amplifier's full rated power.

Big D Wiz You know I’m a frequent viewer and I truly like your channel & video’s although I truly doubt this thing does anywhere near 200-300 Watts. Also, Yes I’m responding before finishing the video because I will be truly dumbfounded if this tiny amp makes almost double the power of my Denon 5803 that is 10x the size of this and it makes 170 watts per channel. Also have you ever heard of the pioneer 1980 ? It is a silver face receiver from late 1970’s and it was like the king of power receivers with 270 watts per channel at less than 0.03 distortion. So I guess you already get where I’m going with this, why would these home receivers that cost $5000+ that are considered flagship put out less power than this tiny “pocket” sized amp ??? Maybe you know more about this than I do. Great video btw 👍

Capable powerwise for some light driven speakers. Sizewise it just show what Class D is capable of. This power at such high efficiency hardly need any cooling other that a small heatsink. All thay pretty impressive. But I have yet to hear a cheap Class-D amp sound actually good. They sound thin and metallic due to the high frequency crossover distortion from the (low quality) low pass filtering. But they can do the job if you're not critically listening, or compairing to a traditional Class B amplifier.

I just bought from Parts Express the Dayton Audio T652 tower speaker that has an impedance of 6 Ohms.. Just curious what the wattage output is at the 6 Ohm impedance..?
@wal
@wal 5 лет назад
I would take 8 ohm plus 4 ohm measurements and divide by 2

I just bought a chinese class D board, I'm going to see what it does. It says 100 watts x2 and was $19. I need a 5 amp 50-100watt power supply which is $10, for 1/3 the price of that thing it shouldnt be too bad, just need a box to put the board in.

Maybe I am stupid or misinformed but 32 times three amps equalls 96 WATTS . Where does the extra power come from? Again Oriental watts? Not worth the ink used to print this on my Tablet screen!
@wal
@wal 5 лет назад
You are correct. That’s continuous power. The test show was only for a very brief period. Power supply obviously supplies more than rated power for short durations

Sorry at 1khz the wattage or output looks great. But why don't you test at 20Hz-20Khz? 1Khz isn't realistic cause no speaker plays at 1Khz?
@wal
@wal 6 лет назад
My equipment won’t measure a sweep. 1kHz and 40Hz are good indicators of an Amps power at low and mid/high frequencies

Question, wouldnt 10% THD mean quite shitty sound quality ? Isnt other amplifiers at like 0.1% normally ?
@wal
@wal 5 лет назад
This is the amps rating for output power, NOT saying it’s 10% THD all the time
@Justwantahover

Why do they rate this stuff @ 10% THD when 10% THD is basically unusable? Crap!

A 100Watt power supply cannot 'create' 2 X 200 Watts audio. Nor 2 X 100 W even. Simple math. Turn it down to get %1 THD or less and what is the power?

Part of the test was performed using an external supply, not the included A/C Adapter

Not going to get 320 watts output from a 96 watt power supply and 10% THD?? I'm shocked they even admit that.

32volt 3Amp power supply, using Ohms Law equals 96Watts, MAXIMUM. Obviously this is not a true 160Watt amplifier! Power equals Voltage, in volts, times Current, in Amps. Buy one of these and you will only get, even at 90% efficiency, about 88Watts before the unit fails.

Connect 1 amp per speaker (1 amp lft spkr/ 1 amp for right spkr) Would sound/pwr be louder? Would it be considered as Monoblock amp? My JBL 4311's require pwr to turnover.

It takes energy to make energy. I'm driving two 120 pound speakers....JSE Infinte Slope model 2's. 5 drivers in each...You need a dawg of an amp to run them...I use an Adcom GFA-555...and it gets hot as hell. No way this thing is 200 watts...At least not high current...

Have you powered any decent speakers with this or just the amp dyno? Even when I power this thing and/or the LP7498E with a 24v source and the voltage booster you recommended at 36v connected to a pair of 4ohm Polk 6x9s, both amps cut out about about half volume.
@wal
@wal 6 лет назад
I’ve used with speakers. Depending on your source, it can max out at about 1/2 volume.

BigDWiz I hear ya on that. The polks measure 3.5-3.6ohm possibly they're pulling too much current? One time it worked and played louder than anyone cares to listen to, other than that it cuts power very early

Power output: 100 watts x 2 @ 10% THD????? if it had 100 watts it would read Power output: 100 watts x 2 @ 1% THD that equals .01% THD per watt and that is how wattage is measured. What in the hell is 10% THD????? it is straight garbage!!

This isn't only an amp, it's a power generator : you put in 96W (32V x 3A) and get 200W (or even 320W ?) at the output. I will buy some of these to power my house :-)

10% distortion is the absolute worst! As a general rule, CLEAN and worthwhile music reproduction starts at .1% distortion at rated power over the entire audible spectrum (not just at an easy-to-do 1kHz), and .01% minimum was the preferred spec. Going by the specs of this unit, which I have found to be listed at 10% at 100 watts at Parts-Express, I'd venture you are getting 15-20 watts RMS of clean output per channel at best Just what should be expected from a sub $100 amp. Most people don't realize what they are missing because they've never truly heard a killer high-end sound system cranked up i their entire lives (though some may think they have). My vintage JVC AX-4 is rated at 60 watts per at .008% distortion, and the difference is unbelievable./ I paid $450 for it back in 1980. Small wonder everyone says old Hi-Fi equipment is still best. You really do get what you paid for.
@wal
@wal 6 лет назад
Older gear was rated at ultra-low THD that’s a fact. Although this one is rated at 10%, my tests are to 1% and this amp is intended for those who want to stream music from their phone, so they are most likely not the audiophile as it appears you are. Thanks for the comment and feedback 👍

If you have a way to test thermals you should try OEM Vs. High Quality non-conductive Thermal Paste on the Amplifier Chip to see if any real gains could be made in the thermal department to more effectively dissipate heat into the Heat Sink since it is passively cooled.

I've been watching your amp dyno's and LOVING it. I'm building a portable Bluetooth boombox with a 12v battery inside with a step-up converter and ratchet strapping that thing to the back seat of my Harley. Looking to use an external BT unit (probably Boss) and 2x6.5" tops, 2x6.5" downfiring subs. Can any of these little bitty amps do a decent job in that environment?
