Greetings everyone. Just received my Antham AVM 70 after waiting almost 4 months. Set up was painless and the sound is awesome now that I have it set up with XLR cables. Previously I had a Yamaha 3030 that was hooked up with only RCA cables. Did notice a big difference in sound quality. My amp is a Monolith 7x200 that I love. Ordered 3 Macintosh amps for my 60th BD. For less aggressive correction, which you may find more like the Trinnov, try a larger measurement pattern, preferably with more measurement locations, too.

As always, love the honestly in your reviews. Really enjoyed the in depth Dirac comparison and the realization of the bass reduction. The good thing is that you can make those adjustments to improve the bass as well as get better directional Atmos sound.

I have this processor and mine is rock solid. Do I wish the bass was a little more in Dirac, yes! I agree with all that he has said with the bass factor and I hope JBL and Dirac fix this issue. I have not had any issues with weird noises coming out of my speaker when I calibrate. But I can’t talk for everyone, I love the sound that this processor gives out and it’s way better than my old McIntosh that I use to have.

Yeah I got tired of the Arcam avr20 and went back to a audiocontrol avr9 and has no bugs. I agree with you in Dídac ruining the sub. But I got a great deal on a Yamaha 3080 just to play with and I must say I was impressed. It’s flawless. I don’t care for the calibration but I like how it sounds flat. Has the same ess processors as the arcam and it sounds great. Also the remote is able to control anything I hook up to it which is nice. Not sure why I never thought of trying one before

Man, I thought they would have figured out these bugs since the review you did a year ago of the Arcam AVR40. There are not many reviews on RU-vid of Arcam or JBL receivers so I took your review of the AVR40 with a grain of salt. I went to the AVS Forum owner thread to see if things have changed. To my surprise, they are mostly paying Harman to be beta testers by purchasing these receivers. Unfortunately this trend in the industry of shipping out half baked products will continue since consumers keep buying them. I really wanted an AVR40 since people claim the sound is great… when things work. It’s a hard pass for me given the bugs.

The actually list of unfixed bugs is published and should not be a deal breaker for anybody. I have happily owned this unit for months and with the exception of one time I had to move the slider in Dirac to get a tone it’s been fantastic and most importantly it sounds fantastic.

@@burningsti well I hope the list keeps getting shorter but that static sound on the video was not a good look for them. Once they come out with the hdmi 2.1 board I’ll check the forum again and make a decision. I’m waiting to see how these companies go about their hdmi 2.1 implementation and who has the least issues. Ideally I would like the board to have 2 hdmi 2.1 ports for the ps5 and Xbox before I pull the trigger on anything.

@@COGuyStuff JBL needs to do better. It sounds great but the bugs it has had for $6K is unacceptable. This was an honest review . There is a reason you don't see a ton of reviews. Content creators don't have time to wait around for a company to fix all the bugs before a processor works as intended. You are absolutely an apologist for JBL/ARCAM/HARMAN. You came over here to try and save face because in your review you didn't mention these issues and others that still exist. Sure a great deal of them have been fixed. Did JBL offer to send consumers money back for sending out a product that didn't work correctly for months?? Beta testers should be compensated.

Great review and thanks for posting. I'm really struggling on deciding between the SDP-58 and the Anthem AVM 90. I need one that that can properly calibrate my 4 subs for a 7.4.4 system. Any thoughts? That AVM 90 has better DAC's, but if it can't calibrate the 4 subs...it's not worth the price.

I have one and the Dirac is buggy. It took a while but I got all three microphone placement options done and uploaded. It was worth the trouble. It’s also great for music and is a Roon endpoint

I have one of these and love the 2 channel analog as well as the 2 channel dac-its basically the same DAC as in the KPS20i and Krell Studio. I haven't heard any Krell Standalone preamps from the era so don't know how well it compared to those.

Hi which One of these do you recommend? Jbl spd-58, audio control x9, Arcam av60 and currently I have marantz 8805a. Which one better as far as room corrections and most you can get out of it. I have 801d4 all across with Dolby atmos. mc901s and mc257 seven channels, two rel sx212 subs, Hifirose rs150, invidia shield pro and few other more thank you so much

Agree with Shane about the 6grand and the bugs… but i choose this unit coz its offer full Dirac Live feature and also free upgrade when new feature available. Comparing it with Arcam/HTP1/Nad and also RMC, i choose JBL which from my reading had less bugs. Just my opinion.

I've got a 20 year old totl Yamaha that was the most complex piece available in it's time. Just last week it did something that I've never seen it do before and I swear it's not in the manual. I can't imagine what the learning curve is like on pieces like these.

Few thoughts: JBL SDP55 = Arcam AV40. Same insides, firmware in different packaging. On screen menu I like, better than Denon/Marantz by a mile. Subjective matter. Never had a problem with Dirac calibration - but I use MiniDSP umik-1 mic. True they could supply better one for this price Few tips for calibration - apart from first measurement for MLP make different positions in height and location at least 1 feet from each other, don’t follow the graphic. Secondly download storm audio target curves which have +5db LF boost. Thirdly it’s good to have Dirac bass management license- to allow better integration. Result of above is I liked dirac for the first time and use it even for music listening (whereas before I found it somewhat flat)

If you have the SDP-55, why use a MiniDSP rather than the Dirac Bass Management? I'm about to pull the trigger for the SDP-58 over the Anthem AVM 90 and a big bonus would be get rid of my MiniDSP to manage my 4 subs. I figured Dirac would do it better than ARC.

@@wfehres I use microphone made by MiniDSP which is a widely used mic with Dirac - the standard one supplied with Arcam is way inferior and therefore will give poor results - totally worth it.

@@wfehres I think new Anthem has got a quality mic. But Arcam def doesn’t. It’s probably better than Denon or Yamaha mics but still. Not sure about JBL wether they provide better one out of the box though.

I think AudioControl is the way to go over the JBL/Arcam variations of these 16 channel AVR/Processors. Seems to be less buggy overall, and a nicer build quality than what I'm seeing in this review.

The system is really for a professional installation and not for casual people buying their first system that they set up them self. The sound quality of the JBL Synthesis is amazing when it is is a professional service package. There is nothing out there that really at the price point can really compete with it.

@@bighands69 What makes it so much better than others? I was considering the Monoprice HTP-1.. though now I am not sure (waiting on HDMI 2.1).. if the imax enhanced and/or DTS:X Pro is worth going for. I only have 7 speakers for now, but do want to do 11.2.4 setup eventually.

@@b3owu1f The balance capabilities and fine tuning on commercial grade engineering systems are very detailed. Consumer grade systems try to offer this via software systems that are easy to use and with nice fancy interfaces that allow us to see what is going on and also to hand walk us through the process. If you want to judge a consumer system you really need to go and listen it because we could sit and talk jargon all day but it would not mean something. If you want a commercial grade system such as the JBL you need to go and see a demo room that has been set up by the people that will offer you the installation so that you can judge what it is. All of people that are complaining about the JBL system are really consumers and not engineers.

I had the chance to demo this model recently. It has the dynamic punch sound character we hear in cinemas. This was actually the sound I had been looking for for years. What I want to know is, are there any brands and models in the AVR category or AVP category that can give this cinematic character? Can anyone who has experience share it? I'm curious about Anthem AVR and AVPs, for example?

Sorry, but if I am spending $6k ($8k CDN for me) on a processor then I don't want any potential bug. I do understand that bugs happen after a new release but updates should have everything fixed within 6 months and this JBL has been out much longer than that.

Spending that much on a processor that has issues taking measurements and speaker blips when changing inputs.... no good. I will say I do like the online options menu vs being stuck with Emotiva's on screen menu. That's it's biggest downfall imo

I let my AVM 70 go because the latest version of ARC Genesis was a mess. I hope they eventually get it sorted, but I was simply too impatient to wait it out.

@@brucecarter6205 I've been using the latest version of ARC and have no problems with it. Keep in mind that it works differently than other room correction software so I might give "weird" results. But it sound fantastic to me.

Anthem is fine of for a consumer system build but the JBL is aimed at commercial installations that involve engineers and technicians.

@@seanlacroix, I was coming from an AVM60 and years before that I owned an MRX500, so I’ve had plenty of experience with ARC over the years. The early version in the AVM70 was flat out broken. That said, maybe they’ve fixed it since I got rid of my unit ~6 months ago.

I was interested in Anthem 740 but user reviews were full of bugs now this advanced processor has its share. Seems like these advanced audio components were released way too early. Hope the new yamaha Avantage offers some surprises and Yamaha reliability.

None of the consumer grade receivers have any kind of correction that comes close to this stuff. If you want real top level performance, forget the big box brands exist.

It is not a consumer grade system. It is intended for engineers and for professional installation. Hence why it is difficult for consumer to install and use. It is not an apple phone that is all about user interface. It is intended to be part of a system and consumer will rarely interact with it other than powering the system.

Thank you for the great review! I just picked up the SDP-58 & I am experiencing the similar issues with hum & weird sounds. Did you ever figure out how to work around it? Anyone else has the same issue?

Update: A friend of mine that retired from Con Edison with a 34 years experience with high voltage and audiophile figured out the issues. My expensive Monoprice XLR cables with heavy aluminum shielding was the problem vs. any less expensive XLR with little to no shielding. Aluminum shielding is causing more interference with new digital equipments vs. old analog.

@@gufiaito69able I am still waiting to resolve the issues. Either I will receive a new unit as a replacement or send it in for repairs at my own shipping expenses. JBL 58 is better than my Marantz AV8805 in term of Audyssey vs. Dirac Live. However, I would rather wait for the Marantz AV10.

Have not experienced any issues yet with mine, except one. It got muted when I paused a movie, had to turn it on and off again. But the sound it produces, it just...makes me smile :) and yes, I also have turned up the bass :) Edit: When I was about to calibrate with dirac once, the test tones did not come on and I had to do a factory reset. So I guess thats one more bug for me :). But only happened once and...yeah...but as Shane said, a Unit that costs this much should have sorted this out. But for me this is a keeper

Agreed, the sound it produces is phenomenal. All the processors out of this caliber have some niggles and bugs. My unit has been great and none of them are deal breakers to me at least.

Yes the 3D sound is crazy, a pro tip. Check out Expanse with any spacebattle!! Experiencing the Rocinate burning through your cinema, it is jaw-dropping, when it swirvles/turns....it is "wooow"

It is not a consumer product and the features that are present are for professional installation. What people call buggy is just awkward to use for normal everyday people. For professionals that use and set up in a much more narrow system it is not as big an issue as their installation have to be preplanned and engineering has to go into the build.

Tonewinner is entry level. These bad boys will sound better. XMC-2 RMC1 RMC1L. ARCAM, JBL, ANTHEM 70 this Tonewinner is around the same as the Denon 3700,4700,6700 and Marantz 7706, 8805. The 8805 would be the best from Denon and Marantz.

@@peppersmith nice!! I was on the fence between Denon x4700, Marantz 7706 , Tonewinner at 300 and Emotiva XMC-2. I never ordered the Tonewinner to test out because I fell in love with the XMC-2 and figured the Tonewinner was in the same league as the Marantz. The Marantz did sound incredible, great channel separation but the XMC-2 was razor sharp and crystal clear. It was quite during quiet scenes and loud when needed it to be. It was a replicate of my local theater sound. The Marantz was a GREAT home theater sound but the XMC-2 was actual theater like sound… not like a home theater, more like a cinema. Glad you enjoyed the Tonewinner, wish there were more reviews and sound tests out there. I only watch movies with my processors.

@@LIMuscleBlackdevil, the law of diminishing returns most definitely applies here. Don’t expect anywhere near 11 grand worth of extra performance. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t buy a Trinnov, because I absolutely would if I could afford it.

I currently have the SDP-58 and JTR 212RT as LCR & ten 110HT as surround & heights 7.4.6. I am using the MiniDSP Flex with two JTR Cap2400 & two GSG G-Sub15. This process is amazing and much better than my Marantz av8805. However, the hum/noise/bugs this processor produces is not acceptable for $7,000. Watching “A Quiet Place” is no longer quiet.

I currently own the SDP-58. I agree with you that the process produces very little hum/noise when it’s by itself. However, the minute I turn on my Sony 325es projector or Apple TV or the UB9000. The hum & weird noise kicked in, and that’s the problem. My old Marantz 8805 had no hum issues but I don’t like Audyssey anymore once I heard & used Dirac Live. It’s unacceptable for a $7K processor. Watching “A Quiet Place” is no longer quiet.

@@chaseleim4773 It’s not the power supply of the amps because there is a faint hum when the amps and the SDP-58 are turned on. The loud hum kicks in whenever any input devices turn on. That’s my problem.

Sorry. There's TRINNOV then there's everything else. Having heard my Brother's Trinnov Altitude 16 nothing I've heard in the last 30 years even comes close to it in terms of Surround Sound capabilities.

Wow, that is quite a claim to make. I guess you’ve had a lot of experience with the top processors out there right now. I would love to pick your brain on how the Trinnov compares to the Storm Audio, Lyngdorf, Datasat, Acurus, etc? Some great offerings out there in the higher end processor segment right now.

These processors are geared towards true home theatre enthusiasts, who are willing to fork over thousands for the best quality. It really sucks that so many companies keep releasing obvious buggy processors at this price point, and forcing their customers to wait a very long time for a possible software upgrade to fix the BS that should have been addressed through in-house testing prior to its release. At this point, spending 3 or 4 times the price on a Trinnov is now justifiable considering the bugs you’re probably stuck with in the 5-6 grand category.
