If it has legs it's a kenetic midge with stripes ;o) I think it's awesome Matt. Safe trip bud, don't eat too much of that San Fran treat "rice-a-roni". I don't know if you were able to retrieve that info on Benn from that video. So while you're in San Fran, if you have time, look up The San Francisco Call 1897 articles on Benn; 6/18 1893; the Eel River trip 1892; and TSFCall's supplement Outing Sunday 6/9 1907 for a biography on Benn. He lived in San Francisco and had a shop on 402 Montgomery St. Maybe there's some steelhead "cultists" over there too. Other than that be safe and have fun. Thanks Matt!

Wow, great comment Joe! I'm going to pin it so I can come back to it this weekend. No time for much research this week. On more day in SF then back to MD Thursday. I've got a free day Saturday so have to decide if I can fish or should I spend it tying for my Georgia trip. I'll probably default to going fishing. 👍

Matt, I came across an item for your fly vest if you ever come across one, buy it, it's a Kelso Streamside Vise Kit with a Wheatley weighted fly box. It's a complete miniature fly tying kit with a 360° rotary vise, c-clamp and a wood screw attachment to screw it into a dead limb or tree trunk, plus all the tools to tie Streamside flies while you're fishing if the need arises, plus the entire kit fits into a leather waterproof case that fits into a pocket of your fly vest, They quit making it about 8-10 years ago, listing for a little over $200 if your lucky enough to come across one. It's like finding a very old bamboo rod, you might not run across another one, the complete kit has all the accessories and containers that allows you to carry a small quantity of hooks, beads, hackles and many other supplies. The thread spools are sewing machine bobbins, so you can see how small your thread tying bobbin is, happy hunting if you're lucky to come across one of these kits.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Год назад
Wow, this is a cool kit! Certainly pricey though, but yeah, if you can find one. You did remind me of another idea I've been kicking around though... a video of my emergency tying kit I keep in my truck. It's a little too big to lug around in a vest but it has gotten me out of a jam a time or two.

Good morning Matt. ☕️time. I like that variation. Hope you wear those out on your fishing trip with Jim. We have delayed our departure a couple of days because the temps are just a little too low. It’s -19F this morning and the forecast is for -33F tomorrow morning. The weather is supposed to moderate by Wednesday afternoon and be about 14F by Thursday. Travel in those temps will be easier on my carcass and the equipment. If something breaks our delay to get repairs could potentially be longer than a couple of days. Hope the weather forecast is correct. Safe travels Matt.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Год назад
Man that's crazy John! Plus 14 degrees will feel like a heat wave. Good luck in your traveling. Jim and I should have weather in the 30s in the mornings with it warming to near 50 by mid afternoon. Ie, great fishing weather if no rain. And good fishing footage if we get into any. 👍

Great Fly, Great Tie, Great Tier! Wish you have a great trip, and hope you do well in the southern waters. One thing I learned about catching Trout years ago: I was not getting down deep enough. Weighted flies are my No.1 Fly all the time even if they are taking dry flies. Wet Flies and Nymphs are my NO.1 fish catcher. I like the Zebra Pattern you tie up. Will try it soon. I love this variation on an overused pattern. I’ve never used a tail on my zebra midges, but I might try it now along with the soft hackle collar. The tail might just be the ticket to catching picky trout on Putah creek, though presentation if usually more important than fly pattern.

Maybe you can do a flie or two from "Artful Profiles of Trout, Char, and Salmon and the Classic Flies That Catch Them: Tips, Tactics, and Advice on Taking Our Favorite Gamefish" , "The Second fly-tyer's almanac" or "Trout and Their Food: A Compact Guide for Fly Fishers" by Dave Whitlock / Emily Whitlock.
