As a native, I can say yes, it does rain all the time. From October 1st to April 1st, water rains down from the sky. It might not come down like in Georgia or Florida during a Hurricane, but it does come down....usually in a mist or worse, a constant, persistent rain. There are years where we get 90+ days straight of rain. In the summer though, we won't have rain from July 5th until mid September. Which is great until the forest fires start and we can't see the sky for the month of August.....
@chenanigans
@chenanigans Год назад
And here we are April 11, 2023 and we haven't seen the sun since March lol. I always tell people that the overcast lasts for nine months from October to June. I don't know why people get this misconception that we start to get sun in April as a matter of fact there's a whole saying that goes "April showers bring May flowers" as well as the term "False Spring" ( False Spring being when you get that first day of sunshine in April and you think spring has finally arrived and then it turns around and does what it's doing now where we have had no sunshine for almost two weeks) lol. And while it might not physically rain a lot, it is *constantly* gray for those nine months with very seldom breaks of sunshine that is what is unbearable at times.

Lived there - it's overcast and damp. Not continually, but CHILLY and humid. Bad for arthritis, great for molds and fungus... Recent years refelct the climate changes. BUT - if you count DAYS THAT RAIN (or precipitate), I'm pretty sure Seattle takes the record (well, after Olympia and maybe Astoria, Oregon) for dismal, damp and soggy days. It's just that is doesn't really RAIN in Seattle. it drizzles. It mists. The skies DROOL, but they don't offer actual rainfall. Precipitation, yes, but not rain drops per se.
@keriezy
@keriezy 6 лет назад
Exactly! I've try to explain how wetness is not the same as rain. I usually go to the windshield standby, where you can't see because its covered in drops but it's not wet enough for the wipers to work they just bounce instead of swipe.
@DAK4Blizzard
@DAK4Blizzard 6 лет назад
All true, though granted I've experienced legit moderate rainfall in Seattle, but only for short periods of under an hour. But I'll take Seattle's humidity over the humidity in the eastern and especially southeastern US. The darkness is what can get to a lot of people. Lots of cloudy or overcast days, low sun angle (as low as 19° midday), and about 2 months when the day length is under 9 hours.

The same is true of Portland. We get 3 or 4 months of dry, sunny weather... and the rest we get gloom and drizzle. It seldom gets cold enough to snow though. Just cool and damp and cloudy. If you're one of those people who needs sunshine, then Portland isn't the place for you (at least for well over half the year). On the plus side though, it stays green much longer. My roses bloom through October many years. I can get fresh herbs even later. I've never been one for bright, hot days. I like the overcast, so Portland is perfect for me. And vampires. Vampires like Portland too.

Lifelong Seattleite here, and the truth is it's nearly unbroken GREY SKIES from October ~15th to July 5th. Everything is always moist but you don't really get "rain" exactly. It's like living in a cold sauna; everything is wet but nothing is really dripping from the sky. We have a term called "sunbreaks" which I guess isn't used much elsewhere, but it's a weather pattern where it's mostly overcast but the sun will peak through frequently as will bouts of wild mist, but the sun isn't actually out and the clouds never clear, and it's usually warm-ish. It's weather where wearing shorts, sandals and a light rain shell/hoodie makes perfect sense. Please no umbrellas, you're *severely* overreacting to the threat of rain, you look like a tool, and you're poking me in the eye with your useless accessory. Really. The big secret though is between July 5th and October 15th we have GLORIOUS SUNNY WARM LOW HUMIDITY DAYS for weeks on end, but you have to put up with the 10 months of grey enjoy them. Seattleites actually COMPLAIN about this weather as we have a temperate climate, so no air conditioning nor real insulation in our homes so anything above 70F is considered a heat wave, and anything above 80F is a crisis. A lot of people, from more sunny locales BITCH AND MOAN about the grey months non-stop. They can leave for all I care because as a native, I personally LOVE grey days. My *favorite* weather is overcast, slightly misty, and 65 degrees. California can suck it. The never-ending sun down there is absolutely *oppressive.*

@briansmith9439
@briansmith9439 5 лет назад
Exactly - the 'rainy in Seattle' idea was an errant progression from the number of overcast days in Seattle which was linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder. Just how and when 'overcast' morphed into 'rainy' is not certain but it is definitely an indication of someone's intelligence, or lack thereof.
@31michelle64
@31michelle64 5 лет назад
TRUTH! has nothing to do with actual precipitation... natives, and people who have lived there a long time know it's the grey skies, low hanging clouds and misty rain that make Seattle - Seattle... and it can be very depressing. Its all about lack of sun. However, the PNW is never more gorgeous than when experiencing a drought!
@profd65
@profd65 5 лет назад
No, that's bullshit. The weather in May is usually excellent, and there are sunny days here and there in the period you mentioned. But it is true that the weather can be relentlessly and monotonously overcast for weeks at a time, and most days in western Washington are grey.
@chenanigans

Calling people tools and basically telling them to eff off, yup that's a 'SEaTtle NaTiVe' for you lol. But what's so funny is they are also fake and passive-aggressive so they would never say this to your face, they only talk like this online or they think it but won't say it in person. Lol. They are overall pretentious, stuck up, elitist snobs about their city. While everything he said is accurate about the weather and environment, he's the poster child for the Seattle Freeze lol. He could have said all that without being a dick. But that's how they truly are inside. I spent about 9 so months over two stays over an almost a year span. Saw the leaves turn & fall, was there for the cold, which was pretty dreary, was there for the awesome budding & sprouting & the whole summer. I didn't see all that much rain. Was down in DuPont vs Seattle. Maybe part of my being unaffected by the rain is that I'm from South Florida where rains pours, pummels, pounds, floods, sometimes for weeks, not to mention the tropical storms & hurricanes. When compared, Seattle is dry, babe. Dreary & gray in the winter, yup. What's really sad is how much homelessness there is! I'm still traumatized by the number of people without a place that's humane to live. A tent is one thing, but twenty tents together where the fumes of the he interstate are poisoning the them. Yeah, raise your minimum wage, have your sales tax, & put more businesses out of businesses & cause whatever are left to refrain from hiring. Piss off Amazon. The homelessness will only get worse. Regulations & rules there are ridiculous. Whine about your rain & that are too many people & you don't like tourists. I'm glad I'm not there now. Not because of the weather, but because of the societal failure & creepiness of the whole area. Seattle is a glorified cesspool & the beautiful areas almost fake. And Dupont? It feels like Disneyworld & I'm waiting for a Stepford wife to... I'll take my 14 hour straight thunderstorms with rain the rest of the day & night. South Florida may not feel like home, & it has MORE rain than Seattle, but at least it doesn't feel like the Twilight Zone, thank you.

In Seattle, I wore long sleeves and wool socks at least 10 months a year. Well - the long sleeves were year round. I wore jackets and sweaters constantly, parked on top of the forced air heat vents in my home at every opportunity and the bill for the heat was high except in August. The umbrella lived in the car because I wear fancy hats that don't like to be wet, but I never used it downtown because the constant icy gales up the urban canyons were difficult to manage. I never went barefoot in the decade I lived there. Occasionally - on sunny days between June and September - I'd pad out in my Crocs and slip them off to stand barefoot on the lawn for a while, just to ground myself. Then I'd go in and put my wool socks back on. My leather coats were my favorite ones - the suede duster with the hood was my go to... Leather cuts the wind. I was cold almost all the time.

If you've ever been to Ireland or Scotland, you have a very good idea of the Puget Sound climate. Cool but temperate, overcast most of the year (where the rain myth actually comes from), and fairly misty. The summers are cool and the winters aren't very cold, though the winter daylight is extremely short. Basically, it's incredibly beautiful all the time. More than that, within a very reasonable drive are mountains, ocean (or the Sound, take your pick), and even desert (east of the Cascades). Basically every type of outdoor activity is within easy reach.

That depends on the season. There was barely any rain last summer, which was unfortunate because it would have helped clear out the smoke. But I'm anticipating November's yearly month long deluge. We get a similar month of nearly straight rain around March or April and the rest is just drizzle or constant cloud cover. I would hardly call that even a light downpour most days. Though that might just be personal interpretation of how intense precipitation has to be to be called a downpour.

It's not the quantity it's the consistency. SEA and PDX both get tons of sun, but very often get light drizzles that just get everything wet all the time. Those in the PNW know many terms for rain.... drizzle, light rain, heavy rain, sprinkles, mist, scattered showers, heavy rain, and rain. *Did you know partly cloudy and mostly sunny are not the same thing?*

The fact that forecasts routinely use "sun breaks" says it all.

I don't live in Seattle, but I do live about an hour away, so its interesting seeing the difference just an hour can make. It's much rainier around here than Seattle. In fact, it's raining right now!

Former Seattle resident for 60 years now residing in New Mexico: The inherent beauty of Seattle and it's environs is obvious to anyone who has ever lived there. I removed from Seattle to NM because I did want a "brighter" future. Seattle's rain isn't an issue. In in fact when you really.get a true rain, it's a wonder - very enjoyable. What's wearisome is that it's mostly gray, gray on gray, then more's the pity. Now having lived in NM for 18 years, I still have flashes of excitement and joy reflecting on what a majestic, lovely place Seattle is. The video brings it all to the fore. Thanks.

I went there for five or six days back in 2013. It was raining when our plane landed in the morning, but after we got to the hotel and napped until noon, it was sunny and mild the rest of the time we were there.

Seattle, Portland, and other cities in the Northwest have 'wet' and 'dry' seasons. In the summer, you can go 1-2 months with no rain whatsoever, whereas in the winter you'll have overcast skies for weeks at a time, with rain every day. Simon touches on this - I guess when you rank cities by which are the 'rainiest', you're judging that by total amount of rainfall per year, versus the number of days with rainfall. 99% of the rain in the Pacific Northwest is a light rain, almost like a drizzle - so even in the winter when it feels like it's raining all the time, we actually aren't accumulating as much as in parts of the country who get frequent thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are actually pretty rare in the PNW.

Simon, as someone who has lived in Western Washington what people call rain is more of a gray mist that can hang around for days. With months of dull gray that can drive sun lovers mad.

Seattle is wet from October to April and pretty dry from May to September. It receives half its annual precipitation during November, December and January. If the the ENSO cycle is El Nino, Seattle will likely receive less rainfall in winter, as storms are often driven toward Southern CA then. At 47.5°N, Seattle is far north for the continental US (north of Maine, Michigan, and Minneapolis). So, relatively speaking, the days are long in summer (16 hours; 5:10am to 9:10am) and short in winter (8.4 hours; 7:55am to 4:20pm). Given that winter brings frequent cloudy days and a sun angle of just 19° on the solstice, Seattle does feel quite dark during that time.

Phoenix! That’s a hilarious mistake! 🤣
@DAK4Blizzard
@DAK4Blizzard 6 лет назад
That's actually partially true, Samar. Phoenix does average more rain in July and August than any other month. (Seattle averages the least amount of rain in July and August.) That's when the North American monsoon occurs, as a thermal low develops around Arizona by July due to intense heating (it develops earlier further south in Mexico). The Gulf of California provides most of the moisture.

I live a little farther north on Vancouver Island. It’s wet but a little farther again, in Price Rupert... four days a year without some form of precipitation. Of all the times I’d been there, I don’t ever remember the place being dry. Still, one of the most beautiful places I’ve been.
