Is it Easier to Hunt Bourbon in Scotland, or Scotch in Kentucky?!

It's Bourbon Night

Okay, so we didn't fly to Scotland JUST to hunt for Bourbon, but you know we had to do some hunting when we were over there! We stopped in 10 shops along our Scotland journey and documented them all. Then, when we came back to the states, we popped into 3 stores in Lexington, Kentucky to compare the Bourbon selection in Scotland to the Scotch selection over here.
Special thanks to Roy from ‪@Aqvavitae‬ for answering some questions for us that helped make this video.

Went to Scotland around the same time last year. Brought a bottle of ECBP C917 that I poured for everyone I met up with. The wonderful thing about over there is that the Whisky bars are ok with you pouring it in there, in fact always poured it for the people working at the bar first. I did notice that there was a good selection of Bourbon including the good stuff in most shops.

There was a tariff war on whiskey between the US and UK that was just lifted about a year ago. From what I've seen in the US the Scotch prices never came down even without those taxes. I would not be surprised if it's the same in the UK with Bourbon. If demand didn't take a huge hit all these exporters are just pocketing the extra money.

This right here. I had to back off buying any Scotch because of the outrageous prices. Thankfully bourbon is a lot cheaper. 🖖😎🥃

@@KillCoWhiskeyMusings Reasons I drink bourbon almost exclusively, instead of having a lot of Scotch in the mix: 1. I prefer the taste of bourbon (though it's hard to beat Laphroaig 10). 2. I'm on a budget, and so I can't afford expensive bottles. 3. As a general rule (there are exceptions) the bottom shelf, which is about all that's in my reach when it comes to Scotch, has quality to match the price.

I've lived in Kentucky my entire life. I've drank Bourbon for 30 years. It's just part of the culture of being born here. I tried some Scotch through different periods of my life when I was younger, but I really hadn't tried one in probably 15 years. I most certainly had not bought any Scotch....ever! The best one I ever drank was a Glenfiddich, and it was over $100 15 years ago. Recently, I received some bottles of Scotch for presents from people who didn't know any better. Reluctantly, I opened a few of them just to give them a try(I strongly considered regifting them, but I thought that was a little too uncouth for me). I must admit, I was shocked by how much I really liked them. I really like the smokey ones. My friends thought they tasted like drinking whiskey out of an ashtray.😂 I even liked some of the less smokey ones, but the smokey ones seem to be where my pallet really likes to be. I get a savory note from Scotch that Bourbon just does not have. The Scotch I drank was not sweet in the slightest. I really like that as I've gotten older. I'm a Kentuckian born and bred. There will always be an open bottle of Bourbon I'm sipping on, but I think there will be a Scotch there as well. It's still a lot cheaper to find a great Bourbon than a good Scotch....but sometimes that savory note you get with a good Scotch is just what I want to experience. I wish I'd given Scotch more of a chance when I was younger. I guess it's never too late to teach an old dog a new trick. A great Scotch....I'm here for it. Even if my wallet tells me it prefers Bourbon. I guess I need to try some Irish whiskey and Japanese whiskey too. You never know what gems you might find if you don't try new things. Even if it almost feels like heresy to my Kentucky heritage.

I'm from Denmark and in my experience you can expect a 50-100% markup compared to US prices here. Like ~60 USD for an Eagle Rare (which is IMO still worth it if you haven't had one). Part of it is just that the US market is so damn huge that most producers don't really need to export much if any product whereas Scotch has been reliant on exports basically forever.

You have VAT included in the listed price. We have city sales tax, county sales tax and state sales tax. It usually adds up to between 6.5% and 9%. It is not included in the listed price as it can be different from city to city.

The most I have paid for Eagle Rare in the UK is £35. Usually, I get it for £30. Only ever managed one Bookers for £65. Now it's £170. Blantons for £65, now £120. EH Taylor, same price as Blantons. Nearly all from Amazon, same as my Rums. Have to leave the house for Havana Club though. I think Amazon Europe must support sanctions against Cuba.😂

as a scotch drinker from scotland who enjoys a bourbon especially in the summer months when we sometimes get 5-10 days of sun in a row i would say our bourbon selection is pedestrian. the best stuff never leaves the states it seems as you guys appreciate your own produce whereas most scotch gets exported. that said im happy with a wild turkey 101 or an eagle rare. even the 80 proof 40% buffalo trace is solid. if you ever make the trip again i recommend van winkle bbq grill next to barrowlands in glasgow east end - they have a huge bourbon selection (for scotland anyway) i spotted a pappy van winkle on the top shelf when i was in getting some chicken and waffles with the wife and kids a few weeks ago on market sunday.

I am a whiskey / whisky buff here in Turkey and would like to chip in. Scotch is much more available here as compared to bourbon. The only bourbons I've been able to try here are bulleit, couple of Jack varieties and that's it. I think ONE of the reasons why bourbon is much more rare globally is because there is just not enough of it to get around. You guys are such boozers there in the US that the demand seems to exceed supply. Especially for the good stuff. So glad to have stumbled upon your channel though. Really looking good. Thank you.

"Bottom shelf Scotch" is usually blended. A mix of single malt scotch and grain whiskey. The single malts are usually the most expensive. I think you both might enjoy the Glenfiddich 14 bourbon barrel reserve, the Deanston Virgin Oak or Deanston 12

If anyone is curious cL is centi liter which is a 100th of a liter, compared to what the US uses for our metric labeling mL (milli liter), which is 1000th of a liter. So one cL is ten mL. Loved the video, Cheers!

Scotch is widely available everywhere in the world because they make so much of it and they have so few people, so the logical solution is to export. The US makes a lot of bourbon, but we also drink a lot of it and have never had to worry about being able to sell through stock without exporting. It's also the reason why regional whiskies from other countries like Japan and India are single/blended malts that closely resemble scotch.

Though I've enjoyed most of the few Scottish whiskies I've tried, I'm content to prefer bourbon. It comes from here in the States, and so - even with the weirdness the three tier system can create, and all the allocated and FOMO difficulties - you can get bourbon without having to pay to ship it across the ocean, and without having to pay import duties. As for being in Edinburgh's Old Town, the New Town goes back to the 1700s. On the other hand, Old Town here in Albuquerque goes back to 1706, and the Spanish founded Santa Fe in 1610, 10 years before the Pilgrims landed and just three years after the founding of Jamestown. And yes, I'm babbling. 🙂 It kind of looks like it's easier to find Blanton's in Scotland than it is in the States. But somebody needs to tell the place with the ceiling bottles not to store whisky on its side. "Cl" means centiliter - 1/100 of a liter. If I'm doing the math right in my head, 1cl=10ml.

I picked up a 32 year old cask strength Mosstowie on my first trip to Loch Fyne and a rare 25 year old Mortloch on my 2nd visit. This was when they only had one location. Great video, guys -- and a really interesting concept! My wife and I took a trip to Scotland just about a month before you did. We're both big Scotch fans (as well as Bourbon and Rye), so we didn't look for any Bourbon: we loaded up an extra suitcase with unique bottles from our favorite Scotch distilleries. One thing you touched on, but didn't dive into is that the UK equivalent to Total Wine, etc. are actually the big online retailers like The Whisky Exchange, or even Amazon. I feel like online liquor buying is much more established in the UK and Europe than in the US where archaic liquor laws have hindered it until recently. I live in a control state, and our state stores have a terrible Scotch selection, so I think for me, I'd have an easier time finding interesting Bourbon in Scotland than Scotch in my state. If you are interested in exploring Scotch further, you might check out the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. They are an Independent Bottler (UK version of an NDP) that sources unique single barrels from all over Scotland (and occasionally other countries) and bottles them atcask strength, NCF. They code their labels by flavor profiles, so if you know you like "juicy oak and vanilla" you can stick to those bottles. Most of the Scotch I've bought the past 3 years has come from them.

When we can get Amazon to deliver things like Eagle Rare, is it really worth wasting valuable shelf space in bricks & mortar stores? ;) Some do have better selections, though. As it is, I've managed to get 73 bourbons, 30 ryes and 34 assorted other American whiskeys here in England (though some of the prices were rather high... Taxes/duty can be painful). I would say that the British Bourbon Society is thriving (I've been involved in choosing two picks so far, bought another fifteen chosen by other members and there are more on the way).

Delighted you enjoyed your trip to Scotland! Whisper it but Scotch has a much wider taste profile than Bourbon, which is probably why it’s more popular globally, but if your rules are relaxed with regards to the daft insistence to always using virgin casks, I’m confident that will change, which would be better for everyone. Hope to see you back here again soon.

If the bourbon industry shifted away from virgin oak, scotch whisky would probably get more expensive and/or lower quality. I don't know if it would be as easy to make "bourbon seasoned" casks, like you see with modern sherry casks.

LOVED THE VIDEO! I was shocked to to see you going to Scotland, AND liking some Scotch. It's good to get to know your Scottish "cousins." BTW, taxes in Great Britain are WAY higher on alcohol....then add in shipping it across an ocean and then selling it in a dinky shoppe (i.e. no mass purchase discounts, unlike at Costco or Walmart, etc. who buy 5-10,000 cases). Finally, think of small Mom & Pop stores along the Bourbon Trail...they're catering to TOURISTS (so I'm guessing their Scotch selections are meager...excluding the big cities). People go to Scotland for Scotch...and golf...and more Scotch. So wondering why they sell mainly Scotch is sorta like going to the Buffalo Trace distillery and wondering why they sell so much bourbon....or going to Hawaii and wondering why there are so many luaus. I'd be interested to know, as a Glen Scotia fan, what the story was on the bottle. Is it the 10 yr, the 15 yr, the double cask version? I think you, like most people (which is why it is harder to find), would like the Victoriana version. SLANTE!

Regarding price: Import tariffs are the biggest contributor. Bourbon will be more expensive abroad; it's also why Scotch is more expensive in the US versus the UK. Import tariffs on foreign booze tends to be pretty high; in fact, that's why Scotch is generally marketed and viewed as a hoity-toity rich person drink in the states.
@darlsbarkley3493

The import tariff on scotch whisky was pretty short lived. A lot of scotch whiskies are cheaper in the US than they are at the distillery. Springbank products are some of the only scotch whiskies that are consistently more expensive in the US than in the UK. The lack of VAT and much larger market make up for shipping costs.

While I've had some great Bourbons they've never come close to the great Scotch I've had. I think the biggest difference I've noticed between the two are that Bourbon has so many flavor notes that repeat and can become a little repetetive from bottle to bottle where the flavor pallete for Scotch is much more diverse. I find myself gravitating towards Bourbon that goes outside of that box, and it was funny to see so much Balcones in Scotland because their Texas Pot Still Bourbon is my favorite Bourbon. I've also noticed that the more malted grain in a mashbill, like Starlight or Leopold Bros. or in Rye too, I gravitate towards those bottles so maybe it's just the way my palate has developed. Anyway, great video, I think you're really going to like that Glenallachie 12yr, that's my favorite Highland/Speyside right now. Cheers!

Looks like I will have to travel to Scotland to get a Blantons, none are that cheap around me. If I even see one AT ALL, ever, around my parts. Jeez.

In the metric system, conversion is just adding or removing zeroes. So, 20cl = 200ml ;-) None of that ounce to quarts and gallon nonsense!

You’ll always get the best choice of whiskies in Scotland, (Scotch and Bourbon). The bourbon choice in England is really poor generally. Bourbon is always overpriced in the UK compared to the US. The higher the ABV, the higher the duty in the UK and bourbon is often stronger than the most common mass produced scotch’s so doesn’t get much of a look in. The best bourbon shop prices are in large supermarkets, but choices are normally limited to 6 to 10 bottles and these always include a stock Jack Daniels No7 and Jim Beam White Label, which I’ve now only recently discovered aren’t a good representation of what bourbon has to offer. Sadly, we normally have to go online to get any of the interesting bottles you review and that means needing to know what to shop for. As a 30yr scotch lover, I’ve only just started exploring bourbon, so the US based whiskey focused RU-vid channels like this one are a goldmine of information. Keep up the good work! 👍👏

I'm a Brit that prefers bourbon to scotch. There are some scotches that i like, but as a one-off. Bourbon and rum I will have multiple pours. I guess I have a sweet tooth.

You made a video with slowed down video which creates a jitter on so many of your pans of whisky. Please figure out how to smooth the video to make this watchable. I couldn't get past the first shop and I love your channel.

Great video, though I didn’t think the scotch selection at that first US store was all that impressive. We basically have liquor commission controlled stores here in my Canadian province, and I feel like our scotch sections have slightly more variety and selection. Prices are hit and miss after exchange rates. Our bourbon selection is obviously not as impressive as in some US states, though we do have some lotteries & special release days. I’ll echo someone else’s comment that London has some really impressive stores. Also super 😢 you passed up all those Springbanks & Kilkerrans just sitting on that shelf!
