A small discussion (I encourage you to comment below) on changing the narrative that we must support local famers... especially when we look at the economics of it all. We'll use corn (it's in season) as our example.

I use a co-op program. I get a small box of veggies per week delivered to my house for $25. It's a local farm in Pennsylvania I like a variety, and it's just me myself and I.

Hi! I’m also living in PA, and I’m curious where you found a co-op program that will deliver veggies to your house each week. That sounds so nice!

I'm originally from a very large farm in Alberta. People often take farmers for granted. Farmers help feed people, and they work so hard doing it. There is a lot of processes involved with farming. Also, farming is weather dependent. Drought, or some adverse weather conditions can affect crops. So, farmers can also see losses of profits. We do have to support our local farmers. However, there are some things we can't get in Canada, like tropical fruits, or olive oil, and other items. Thanks for sharing this. Cheers, Chris! ✌️🇨🇦

I live in Chatham and I have a milk lady, lol. She drops off fresh farm milk and eggs once a week or so. I get the milk for 5 bucks a gallon and eggs for three bucks a dozen, both a bit cheaper than the grocery store. As to local meat. I get my meat locally as well and I can get three meals out of a single chicken breast, as opposed to one meal from a grocery store chicken breast. I pay about a half more than grocery store prices for my meat and it's worth it. Cheaper is definitely not always better. Plus I know they treat the animals well and don't give them a bunch of hormones and crap. Of course, you still must shop around for the best prices and product. When I see continual fields of corn, as you showed here, I know that they have to use huge amounts of fertilizer to maintain the soil, so it's not worth it even if it were cheaper.

Good point. Monoculture farming is expensive to maintain, I missed that in the video.

I'm biased bc I'm writing this on lunch break at the farm... BUT anyone US based- your local farmer wants to know you regardless of income. SNAP + Double Up Bucks is a great way to shop at farmers market. Your local farmer may operate CSA. Many CSA's are sliding scale, offer subsidized shares, accept SNAP, and are generally good at using federal programs to their community's advantage. Food is available for you. Small farms use wash/pack methods that retain nutrient density, and you're also supporting good land management and ecological communities by default when you shop small local farms!

Chris, you do make some great points. It’s a catch 22. Luckily I have quite a few farmers markets within reasonable driving distance of my home so I get the best of both worlds. However, for those without the benefit of being able to travel (senior citizens and low income) they have to rely on what’s close to them. I’d like to see grocery stores set aside a percentage that they would commit to purchasing from local farmers so everyone could benefit. Great topic and thanks for taking us along.

In the UK we say "Locally sourced products". That means within the 'said' area or near to where you live, as opposed to shipped in from another country. A few farms will do delivery boxes of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables straight to your door. Some farms set up farmers fares one or twice a month in different areas to get their produce out there. Local news papers will tell you what's on, ir you can use the internet.

I support local farmers as an investment in my community. Helping my neighbors stay on the land for another generation or two helps my quality of life. We have a cohesive.community in which neighbors help each other out.

but what is local though? And when you have a limited budget and local means paying triple or more on price on things, can you realistically support local no matter how good the community is.

Very good topic, I agree with you that farmer's market prices are not very economical for most. I have often walked away from some outrageous prices that I have seen farmers place on their produce. When did farm fresh foods become a luxury item that the poor can't afford? I grew up in the Caribbean and it was the other way around, farmers sold the cheaper foods and the supermarket was expensive- go figure! Smh .

I guess it depends on where you live. I live in Colorado and there will be a farmer's market today 18 mins away. Considering the nearest grocery store is 15 mins in either direction, the location of the market today isn't bad ( I've seen postings further out). King Soopers ( a subsidiary of Kroger) is headquartered in Colorado as well, and I do most of my shopping there. They have a lot of locally made brands for sale, and do a good job of advertising that. I also (when needed) have fresh milk, dairy and even some meat products delivered by a local company throughout the state that sells products from local ranchers. The pandemic has definitely influenced my desire to purchase products closer to home as supply chains disruptions were noticeable with certain items at the store. Depending on where you live you don't necessarily need to drive far distances to support local, as commute should definitely be added into the cost

Kroger has had plans to close half of their stores by 2025 since 2014, will that influence your choices if your local store closes? just curious.

@@dianapovero7319 I didn't know that. I haven't heard the rumblings locally, but hopefully my primary store isn't one of them ( it's actually a newer one; it opened in like 2018 I believe). My commitment is to my family however, and not a company. Ideally the goal is to support local businesses as much as possible, but if it's not feasible ( financially or by opportunity) then we'll have to source food from other retailers (which I use supplementary as well). I'd still support the delivery service I use as well though, as they are affordable, local, and great quality

Hi Chris that’s so true they say buy local but when I goes to the market it’s very expensive every week I go the prices are very expensive sometimes you go to the grocery store you would pay more because I would buy four cobs of corn and I pay twenty dollars for just four it’s only for my daughter she loves corn it’s ridiculous to you and your family stay safe bye.

I live in rural part of Ireland and my nearby town's farmer's market is a joke to be honest. Very few stalls, selling mostly flowers and crochet baby blankets. You can get the occasional honey or jam stand but at €4 per small jar of jam they can forget it. I can make much better jam for a fraction of the cost. Plus the market is held on Thursdays so I would have to take time off work to go there. I rather grow my own - it's cheaper and I know the produce isn't sprayed with who knows what.

Maybe it should be 'Support Small Business'. Giant mono cropping farms vs small time, multi faceted farms. Also, Farmers Markets are everywhere. No need to drive to the farm.

don't get me started on Farmers Markets.. I'd ask you to do some research to see how 'local' the products in those markets are. CBC did a segment not too long ago. Shocking for many, but what I expected. Don't be fooled by farmers markets.

Buy local is anything grown within 100 miles, so you've compared local to local. The avearage travel distance for a piece of produce is 1300 miles for the indirect route from farm to wholesaler to hub storage for a chain store to district storage for the same chain to your store. You payed 5 times as much for tastier more nutritious because it's fresher corn also I've dealt with farmers profesionally & even larger Family farms with truck stands don't usually wholesale beyond the restarant & catering trade. That may be different in Canada, but not here in the U.S. Here farmers Markets can't resell trucked in produce they must grow it themselves & I understand that's not always true in Canada.
