As someone who is 24 and is looking to finally learn art very seriously and hopefully have a career, where do I start? What resources should I use and learning path should I take? I feel very lost and feel like I’ve already lost too much time and I’m too far behind to “compete” with all the child prodigies. How do I deal with the regret of not starting sooner?

I know this feeling so well... but you are still so young so don't worry about starting too late, you have plenty of time as long as you are motivated. As for where to start, that depends a little on where you want to end up, so if you can be more specific about what kind of art you want to produce, I may be able to direct you towards some good resources. I can think of 2 resources that are good no matter what you want to do. How to draw - by Scott Robertson Color and light - by James gurney These 2 books are really fundamental and can be read again and again, and you'll just keep on learning from them. If video games is your goal, learn a little bit of 3D because it's pretty crucial these days to have an understanding of it. Blender is free and awesome, download it on steam and watch some youtube tutorials. Let me know how you go and good luck!

like everyone else, kinda sorta, i've been drawing since i was a kid. i never took learning seriously until i was 23. and despite having a slight learning disability, i've gone from an artist who could barely draw a character like, anything below the neck, to an artist who can basically redraw any reference pic that has a character. all under a decade of serious learning. it honestly surprises me considering that i have a tendency of comparing myself to other digital artists who are way better than i am,lol, but i should really focus more on myself and only compare as a form of inspiration, like; "can i redraw this? yes? then do so." :) also, like Jazza has said: "it doesn't have to be the same. it doesn't have to be as good or similar." :)

I couldn't agree more, everyone starts out really bad at drawing, but if you put in the hard work for many years, you improve... Drawing like kim jung gi may still be a far flung dream, but drawing a little better than you did yesterday seams very possible... so you just have to keep trying :) That's a great quote btw, it's very true! Keep up the hard work, and thanks for watching!

I'm currently a 41 year old fart. Personally, I'm concerned about a few things: 1) Is my mind at my age capable of learning new things, including drawing? 2) Would the creative industry, including animation and games, accept older "rookies" like me? How bad is ageism in the iandustry?
@matthewdobrichillustration9014
@matthewdobrichillustration9014 2 года назад
I honestly don't really know how ageist the industry is... but I can say that during 2.5 years of working as a freelancer, nobody ever asked me how old I was, I could have been 85 for all they knew 😂 As for learning new things, I hope 41 isn't too old because I turn 37 next week and I still have to figure out 3D and AI haha Regardless of these factors , which to be fair, are quite reasonable concerns, I still think you should give it your all, because there are just so many other amazing benefits to perusing art that are not exactly financial or professional concerns. I wish you all the best in your art journey, and if you are looking for some advice or critique, Jim on my discord server and post some work. Maybe we can expedite your learning process a bit 😁

Hello Matthew, i wanted to ask you a question if you don't mind. You said that you took art seriously when you were 25-26 yo. But did you go to art school or are you a self-taught? Sorry it may be a personnal question, but i wanted to try asking. Anyway thank you for your content, this is really inspiring

Thank you so much for watching, i'm glad you found it inspiring. To answer your question, no, I didn't go to art school, I learned everything I know from books, online content, and experimentation.

I've been taking art seriously for about 10 or 11 years now. Still feel like I need another decade before I'll start to figure it all out haha

Oh no, now I'm getting flash backs to chemistry 😱... I can't remember what I did in science, but i can't remember much about proton shells and the periodic table, so it probably wasn't science 😂
