I think a lot of people miss the subtlety of the actor who's playing Dex. If you go back to previous episodes, every time people put Dex down even jokingly, it hits him super hard. I because it's so subtle, I think a lot of people miss how much it messes him up, but the pain in his eyes is so hard to watch. And it really does seem like he's trying to be happy for her, but it's just been dropped on him with no chance to deal and you get the feeling he was already depressed.

I think calling Dex a parasite is a little harsh. Even through the bad times, he's been good for Emma. He went about it the wrong way, but he pushed her to follow her dreams.

I feel like Emma isn’t Dex’s last resort, it’s his last stop. He knows that once he’s with Emma, that’s totally it for him. So, he waits and waits cause he’s immature or not good enough for her etc etc. And on the flip side Emma never takes the jump cause she doesn’t see how much dex loves her

"pretend tonsillitis" = their gut-wrenching love for each other. When Emma told Jean-Pierre about her "pretend tonsillitis," she's implying that she told him about her feelings for Dex. It's a happy occasion!

i think you guys are a little hard on dex. especially about the fight they had. while he was definitely at fault he wasnt lying about emma, she majorly judged and belittled him a lot in the name of "humor". was in the right? def not but at the end of the day they both were toxic in varying levels at that point. its clear to me that he's always loved her but put her on a pedestal that he didnt believe himself worthy of, or that he didnt want to drag her down to his level. He has such high expectations of her that he was disappointed she didnt put herself forward like he thought she shouldve. but at the end of the day they both love each other and have grown to the point they can both provide what the other needs. For dex he grew in maturity and in confidence of himself as a person, for emma she grew into herself and is in a place of success that she deserves

oh also while i 100% understand the uncomfortability at the mentions of suicide, thats how a lot of people/specifically british people joke around. While it can def be an indication of it being a serious ideation, it is a way to make fun of the bad times. Its how i and a lot of my friends joke around so we saw it less as a real "threat" and more as him coping with the way his life is going to shit. of course its open to interpretation if you think it was real, but thats just one way to look at it

You're very hard on Dex guys, the suicidal reference was sarcasm. Dex needs purpose, he has money he's not on his uppers.

I'm excited to see where these actors go next because they have been excellent.

Damn, you guys made me soooo depressed over one of my favorite episodes! I do get it. Initially thought same about Dex’s comment at the train station and being left at the apt alone… but … ultimately it was soooo rewarding after 11 long years of their relationship. Plus Leo’s acting -raw emotion speaking about Jaz and his heartbreaking reaction to Emma leaving w JP was among the best I’ve seen.

It was over for Jean Pierre before it started as soon as dex shows up lol the timing is always a mess

Y’all Dex is happy he’s just post sex sleepy lmao. They both genuinely love each other so much this is a happy moment for them😭 also Dex is not a parasite????? While he was harsh in their fight, he was not wrong either. It has been about bad timing not that they only want each other when they have a partner. They have always wanted each other at all times, its just one is always more scared about messing their friendship than the other. But they have BOTH pushed each other to be better (Dex has pushed Emma to be better too). The “you can’t rid of me that easily line” hits because BOTH have tried to stop their feelings for the other and BOTH are aware that has never worked.

I totally don't think that at this point he thinks of her as "a shoulder to cry on". When they slept together (three times!) he was drunk, maybe, but he loves her, he knows he loves her at this point. It's obvious to him. there are plenty of girls he could go have a drunk hookup with. never ever with emma. I think the fact that emma still thinks he thinks that is the real issue here - not issue as in bad - but as in ... everyone walks around with stories in their heads about what is going on, and often we are telling ourselves old stories - or stories that are now out of date, but boy those bad stories have a way of hanging on. This is what happens when you have more experience in your life - when you're in your 30s as opposed to your 20s, or your 40s as opposed to your 30s ... you really have got to start looking at how you tell your own stories. Am I still telling myself that old story? Or ... is it a new story now? IMO, Emma retreating to "you just thought I was a shoulder to cry on" is her still being in the old story - not realizing Dex is in the new story, the one where she needs to go now. But you have to let go of the old story first. Sorry for babbling. I just think the negativity about Dexter is a little unfair because ... this isn't a show about a a patient good woman waiting for a bad immature man to grow up - none of that patriarchal old-fashioned shit. This is about two people with very similar insecurities - despite having very different lives - both of whom live WAY up in their heads most of the time - and both growing up and changing. yes, he was an asshole 6 years ago or whatever, but God help us if we will all be judged forevermore on our behavior on our worst day. By this point, Dexter is full on in love with Emma - and he has not been able to stop thinking about making love with her - and she basically ghosted him. He's human. He's not a jERK. his feelings are hurt not because he's a man-baby but because he LOVES her. "He didn't sound happy. He looked like he was drained." He was. Literally. and it's a good thing. also, the sudden love for Jean-Pierre reminds me of the hilarious exchanges you three had about Gareth in Normal People. Zuff: "I don't want him to be upset in any way." like, WHAT lol

Wait that makes me sad that you guys think Dex is a parasite. I did not have the same reaction at all to them finally having this moment. I think I felt the same about your reaction to the kiss at Tilly's wedding. There is so much context to that kiss that almost disqualifies it as cheating. The same thing applies here, even though Emma, this time, is with someone else. If you make things black & white, yes, on paper it qualifies as cheating but their relationship is soooo much more complex than that. It's so clear they're soulmates.

I don't necessarily disagree with a whole lot of what you're all saying...but respectfully, I need y'all to get over it so we can all start the next episode happy about them being together lol. We'll acknowledge that they're both very complicated people who needed to grow as people apart, so that it would be good once they got together and keep it moving. Please and thank you boys.

I agree with some comments to watch episode 13 and 14 together ( back to back) as this will be the best option to review the story. Otherwise, you will lose the importance of their love story.

My favorite episode 😭 it only took a decade 🥹 you can tell Emma was worried Dex was just looking for someone to lean on but it all changed when he told her he wasn’t coming and she realizes how serious he actually is about her. The irony is that she’s been waiting for him the whole time and only now is he mad she moved on when he could’ve had her way earlier

I'm enjoying this show so much and I love the performances, but Dex and Emma would not make a good couple at this juncture in their lives. Before this show, I've not often seen a show/movie create a very believable love between two people while also demonstrating why they shouldn't be together.

I feel the same Rob. I didn't care for how they spoke at the end, or rather, since I have seen the film version with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, I just didn't care for how Ambika and Leo played it. Jim and Anne played the scene perfectly as it was the climactic romantic moment in the film. But here, Ambika's Emma sounded angry, and Leo leaned in too heavily on the suicidal/depressed aspect. It just left a bitter taste after that beautiful lovemaking scene.
