Perfect observation. An economy of moves. Reminds me of the Matt Helm novels by Donald Hamilton. In one scene, Helm slits a bad guy's wrist with a pocket knife. "Better get that fixed or you're gonna bleed to death!"

Maybe if Denzel was younger, they might have wanted a flashier character. But he was supposed to be older ( my age) and his moves should be efficient, like he’s been doing them for years. McCall isn’t overpowering opponents like a young man, he’s outsmart/out killing them

I mean it does exaggerate, just in different ways. In these movies, Denzel always has a superhero damage buff. There's no way that flimsy paper book could cause a trained assassin to double over and lose control. Denzel was sitting down and hit him with essentially paper with an outstretched arm; he had almost zero leverage. In reality, the assassin would have easily shrugged this distraction off and blasted him. And that's not even going into the fact that every single time we get one of these action scenes, it begins with the villain cruising right up to Denzel's face, conveniently in range of his hands. A basic police officer would have kept distance with his gun up and had him turn around before moving in. Checkmate. There's a reason we don't read about mass killings by ghost agents in real life. These scenarios don't work out in reality. It's extremely exaggerated for drama.

Plus, in this particular scene (which I've watched about 10 times before), I could almost read Nicolai's mind. He really didn't know who McCall was. He knew all the background stories were lies. So, with every McCall move, Nicolai was learning, admiring, comparing, and pegging McCall based on Nicolai's Russian Spetznatz experience. With Nicolai's wry smile and look of discovery, you could tell he pegged McCall up pretty high on the chain of special government operatives, a very special dude of some mysterious sort.

Yup. I can watch any movie of his just for his performance.

Of course the director/lighting/set-dressers/soundmen/ etc. are very responsible for the atmosphere and presentation.....and then there is cutting and editing. Denzel is just the icing on the cake.....and receives all the praise from the public.

I saw it in a theatre in Chattanooga TN. They never turned on the lights when the movie was over. My friends didnt get it; I did. They were hesitant to walk out - I was not. I told them to follow me. True story.

It is very subtle but the first two movies have a slight implication that The Equalizer has some small divine force working in his favor. Like an Angel of death on his shoulder. There is a shit load of bible and book of revelation symbolism in the movies. The box truck says "Herald" on it. A messenger during biblical times, for "the king" who proclaimed his messages loudly. McCall is a Herald of death.

As an Equalizer fan, I rank them 1,3,2. The sequel had some great action, and of course the acting was great af, but it packs the same feel.

Don't agree. 3 was excellent, and indicative of the storyline and Robert's finding peace.

The TV series, the original, was better. More problem solving. Sometimes he called on help. Interesting, had a Mission Impossible vibe. This is just violence.

Agree 100% although I believe Martin Csokas was brilliant as villain opposite Danzel in the 1st one. Danzel effin sold it!

The Hitman could have easily sprayed bullets from Uzi from a distance of 2 meter...no reason to move up to him!!!

I loved the new one! I want to go see it again. Great way to wrap things up for the character.

I liked the third movie. For me, first > third > second movie. The second movie was kind of everywhere, pacing was off. Also, the last act with the island felt really forced in.

Given that a knife would fit in any of the holes without breaking the plastic, wouldn't you say it could short the circuit easily enough if things were broken? And a short circuit would trip the breaker and (assuming the outlet was on the same circuit, which is probably more doubtful) the lights would go too. (Edited to fix typo.)

No. that wouldn't work. buy an outlet and try to break it. you would need a hammer to beak that plastic and then you still would not have a short.. just a broken outlet. Also, fluorescent lights would never be on the same circuit as an outlet. @@peter9477

So I’ve rationalized that bit of movie magic. But why would that take out all of the lights? They would typically be on a different circuit. And why did the owner of the restaurant not come back, saying what’s going on here? And why did the truck conveniently stop there at the exact right moment? The answer is, it’s a movie. It’s a feel good movie where there’s someone out there helping those in need of help. The third ones out already

I get that, the problem for me it's so silly it takes me out of the movie. I'm not trying to be a real-life electrician but he stabs the outlet and the lights go out. My brain stops watching the movie and goes "wait, what?" and it breaks my suspension of disbelief for a second. "And why did the owner of the restaurant not come back, saying what’s going on here?" This I can go with. Either the guy knows his regular customer is into some shady shit and quietly leaves, or he just hears the gun go off and gets out the back door. You might not even be thinking about that guy at the time because he's been off camera for about thirty seconds. "And why did the truck conveniently stop there at the exact right moment?" I can accept this too, without my brain stopping the show to ask questions. It's not totally implausible that a truck would pull up, just a lucky break. It shows that he can adapt and exploit the situation at hand with no warning. If the truck didn't pull up, maybe he would've still escaped some other way. Like, there's a fire extinguisher in the room, and he shoots it with the gun to create a smoke screen so the guys in the car can't get a shot on him, then he goes out the back door into the alley before they can get into the building and stop him.

In a better version, this scene is 2 minutes shorter. The truck pulls up but doesn’t stop. We see it block the view of the shop and 5 seconds later, when the truck is gone, he’s already walking out towards them. We just assume the assassin dude is kia.
