How about this, it doesn’t actually matter, nobody actually cares and it doesn’t actually mean anything. Root for who you want to, when you want to and don’t care what others think about it. Rules for life.

@@notoriouseagle1074 I really can’t stand San Diego sports because of how often it’s fair weather fans show up to games late and leave early. Plus the Spanos family has held the city hostage for so long. Love their uniform though. I didn’t root for Patriots because I felt very band wagon-y in doing so since they had started winning when I was around 7 and barely started getting into football at around 11 years old. Brett Favre was always my favorite player and when he went to the Jets I was all about it. Told myself if he retired here then I’d stick around. Drafting an SC kid in Sanchez also kept me around. I know Favre unretired and went to the Vikings but at that point I fell in love with the team and the strong Jets defense. Not really a Hockey guy but my family is all about the Bruins.

There is one sport where both Arguments exist simultaneously and that’s motorsports. Formula 1 for example is a sport where you can find die hard Ferrari fans who root for Ferrari no matter what and die hard driver fans who root for only one driver. I was a Vettel fan and so when he went from Red Bull to Ferrari I changed what team I cheered for. Simultaneously my dad was a Mercedes fan and he supports them regardless of the driver

I'm from eastern Iowa. Where I grew up, you were a Bears fan or a Packers fan (a few weird Vikings fans, not many), a Cubs fan or a Cards fan. The NBA wasn't big yet, so nobody really cared. Blackhawks in hockey. University of Iowa Hawkeyes for college. I became a Utah Jazz fan because I moved to the intermountain west (Idaho, Wyoming and Utah) when Bobby Hansen, a Hawkeye legend, was drafted by the Jazz. Before that I rooted for a player, Julius Erving. I am back in Iowa and rooting for the same teams. Never changed in my travels.

Why show blind loyalty to a professional sports team that has no such loyalty to you? Ask Baltimore Colts fans. Ask Houston Oilers fans. Oakland Raiders? Then there are those teams that have no real interest in ever winning, because they know their fan support is locked in. I should root for the Bengals or Lions simply because I was born or lived in those cities? There can be many different reasons why we fall in love with, and root for a team. All of them are valid except one. You can never fall in love with a team just because they're winning. That is not true love, that is lust.

I have teams from all over the country. My favorite teams are the Lakers, Dodgers, and Rams (I currently live in LA, but didn't always). But my favorite team is the Avalanche. My favorite NCAAM and W teams are my alma mater. But my college football team sucks, so since I lived in Ohio for a while, I'm a Bucks fan. I lived in Dallas for a while. I love the Mavs, but hate the Cowboys and am ambivalent toward the Stars and Rangers. I lived in Cleveland for a while and I still follow the Browns, Tribe, and Cavs fairly closely. IT's about the journey.

I came to Colorado in 7th grade. Everyone here wore that stupid Orange and rooted for Elway. I couldn't stand it, fortunately the 49ers won the SB and I've been die hard since, which was tough when a few years later the Donkeys went back to back. I slowly picked up all the other Denver/Colorado teams as I grew into loving the other sports.

As an european, the ease americans switch teams baffles me. It is common for a smalltown person to root for a succesfull big town team. But you stay with that team for the rest of your life. Most people support the local team though....forever...win or lose. I'm talking football(soccer).
