Liam Lawson made a big impression last season - an opportunity was presented, and he took it. BUT it hasn't lead to a seat, and the longer time goes on, is his opportunity only more likely to pass...?

I mean, if sauber wanted to dro zhou for lawson, red bull would block it. Of that list, Perez and Ricardo you can easily argue have done more in the past to merit a seat on the grid, while all the others don't have access to lawson. So your frustration is misplaced.

At the end of the day it comes down to one simple question Red bull have to ask themselves. Do they value Danny’s commercial value more than Liam’s career. My personal opinion is that Liam should be in already, if not at the end of the season to replace Danny. This is supposed to be the ‘pinnacle of motorsport’ yet we still have pay drivers. Nowadays I consider Danny a pay driver since it’s literally his presence that pays Red bull, not his performances. Same goes for McLaren days. What do I think will happen? They will keep Daniel because at the end of the day, they are a business that will value his sales more than Liam maybe getting points now and then in an RB next year.

Lawson at Williams sounds good to me. Unfortunately red bull isn’t looking loyal to Yuki or Liam, be that personal or circumstance. Williams is kind of perfect for Liam. As you said earlier, he’s a tidy and reliable driver as well as the fact that he has a relationship with Alex already

While I do believe there are drivers who have had their time (Riccardo, Stroll, KMag, etc.) I also think that at this level if you want the seat you need to perform on a different level. Like you need to make it undeniable for a team to say yes to you. Only 20 seats with 15-18 already taken at the start of each season. Difficult to ask such young drivers to outperform to get a seat on a mid team, but that’s apart of the sports business

Sadly I think the ship has sailed for Liam. We (Kiwis) do not have large corporate wealth that can open doors as many countries do. Perez is locked-in, as is Tsunoda. Our Aussie cousins will push hard for Danny Ric and Horner rates him highly. Best hope for Liam is a loan to Sauber if they were interested.

Red Bull must give Lawson a cockpit at Alpha Tauri. If they don´t, they should sell the team, because then it´s just a bullsh*t team that has no ambition to become first and not a junior team. I wouldn´t have kept Pérez, i´d try Sainz. For Alpha Tauri I would go with Lawson and Hadjar. There is not really a point to keep Tsunoda at Alpha Tauri if they don´t trust him to perform in a Red Bull. I think, the data must show Red Bull that Pérez is faster than Tsunoda, otherwise they probably would have taken Tsunoda for Red Bull. Ricciardo is sadly far behind his old pace and I would drop him immediately even though I consider myself a Ricciardo fan. If Red Bull keeps all four seats like this year, they continue to be a one-man-team and are really in trouble if Verstappen leaves. One year ago all the great drivers would have loved to join Red Bull, but now McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari are on pace and I trust Ferrari and Mercedes more for the 2026 engine than Red Bull-Ford.

@aoife1122
@aoife1122 3 месяца назад
He will not get a seat in 2025 (probably never, I'm afraid, unless he's prepared to twiddle his thumbs in the Red Bull garage for yet another year, in the faint hope they'll have a change of heart with their change of engines in '26) ... far too many drivers with lucrative sponsor backing for him to have any hope for a drive. I know, we love nothing better than the old "F1 musical chairs" on social meejah but the reality is, F1 is a pretty darn conservative (and risk averse) bunch and they much prefer sticking to "the devils they know"... even better if said devils have a big fat checkbook. I can see only one rookie joining the grid for next year and that is Kimi Antonelli. As for the one left standing when the music stops? Your guess is as good as mine but I'd put my money on Ocon, Sargent seems to have some "guardian angel" watching over his F1 career (a nicer term for "billionaire uncle ;). Yes, Brit tubers already hyping Bearman as a "shoo-in" at Haas next year but he is only their reserve driver because he cost 'em nothing. If there is one thing Gene Haas likes even better than Ferrari powah then it is hard cash, I wouldn't be too surprised if he's trying to land the biggest fish of them all: Joe Gung-Ho. After their recent debacle with Marzipan and Schumacher they surely have little appetite for yet another rookie experiment.

In 2022, the year where Liam came 3rd in F2, Felipe absolutely destroyed the competition, beating 2nd place Pourchaire by over 100 points. And yet the poor guy has never once really been in contention or even talk for a seat! We've seen how good Lawson was in his few races last year, and he was beaten with authority by Drugovich. I feel bad for the likes of Liam, Felipe, Theo and all drivers who win f2 and then are forced to not race in f2/f1 for a year because there are some completely woeful drivers in f1 who aren't developing and priving themselves. This idea I have wouldn't work but I think, in order to have development for younger drivers the driver who finishes last in the championship, no matter who they are, should immediately lose their seat to the f2 champion. It sounds extremely harsh especially for someone who finds themselves in a very similar situation to logan who was brought in too early, but it gives the f2 champion a guaranteed seat to prove themselves and therfore continue their career. Alternatively you could have a rule where at one sprint race a year; a team must include a development driver. For example Mercedes could put antonelli in the sprint at Sao Paulo, and Alpine could have used doohan at the Chinese sprint. It gives these drivers a chance to show they can drive in f1 race conditions, which they don't get a chance to do unless they find themselves in a Bearman/De Vries like situation
@bsylvester713
@bsylvester713 3 месяца назад
I'd take that further just automatically promote F2 Champion and Vice Champion to the 9th and 10th team in last years constructors championship respectively. For quality sake, it shouldn't be a driver that has been in F2 for MORE THAN three seasons. It's up to the team who they drop. Your idea is also good. Obviously if someone finished last in a F1 season they got beaten by their team mate!

There's always a surprising amount of talent that's in f2 that goes completely untapped. It's not just the champions but also a lot of the top 3 drivers have the chance to do well in f1 but they never get the chance. We had a good run of bringing up a bunch of young talent from the junior formulas until 2022. None of the teams want to take risks on young talent anymore. They want someone with more experience and it usually leads to their own detriment. That's why I'm on board with Kimi jumping straight into Mercedes cause they're the only ones who realistically are open to taking risks.

Williams benefitted from reviving one RB graduate, there is chance to rip the rewards of doing that with another has occurred. Also, Lawson and Albon duo would work very well, we can all tell, and PR-wise it would almost be like Lando-Sainz level of success. No brainer. So, dear James, please do your thing. I’m just thinking that Red Bull are a bunch idiots, and they’ve got a big problem coming. Liam Lawson obviously needs a seat in F1. Ayumu Iwasa had a comparable F2 career to Lawson and is currently doing very well in SF, he might need a seat in F1. Isack Hadjar is currently 2nd in F2, and would need a seat in F1 if he keeps it up. So that’s 3 guys who are likely to be F1 ready for 2025: Lawson, Iwasa & Hadjar. They’ve also got Arvid Lindblad in F3 who looks the real deal, and might be aiming for F1 in 2026 or 2027. They’ve got a quality stable of junior drivers and NONE of them are going to get a seat?!

Without a single moment of hesitation I would have had Liam in the Red Bull seat alongside Max for Bahrain 🇧🇭 2024. There is zero question he’d be doing a better job than Perez. Christian looks like he’s not giving Helmut a say hence the ridiculous contract extension for Perez and Danny Riccardo at VCARB still driving. Liam should be snapped up by someone, anyone right now, cause wherever he goes he’s going to perform and be an asset to the team. I feel for Liam. Love to see him on the grid in 2025. He’s being wasted at Red Bull and he’s not young like Kimi Antonelli so time is ticking. It’s a travesty tbh. 👀🧐🤯💥🤬

It looks like any chance of a Kiwi with minimal backing making it in the modern form of F1 is extremely low. It's hard to make the case for F1 being a meritocracy as so many once "good" drivers are now past their expiry date but wanting to retain their careers. If you go through the 20 drivers it's pretty weak on real talent, unlike the eighties. A grid in 1985 would have six World Champions including Senna, Prost, Lauda, Mansell, Rosberg and Piquet - and some outstanding talents covering most of the field. To watch people like Stroll and Magnussen going through the motions is painful - they shoot (race) horses don't they?
@TygonBC
@TygonBC 3 месяца назад
Netting everything off, I think the drivers who at this point haven't really earned a drive for 2025 are Zhou, Sargeant and Magnusson, and possibly, though he's a lovely guy, Ricciardo. Stroll and Perez perhaps merit drives in "lower" teams though we know now that's not going to happen. This would still leave the door open hopefully for Lawson, Bearman and Doohan, and perhaps one other. Exciting times.

i think the thing that people don’t seem to be talking about as much is where we are in terms of regulations. and what i mean by that is we are currently in the “purgatory” stage before 2026. only 1.5 years left. but 2025 is more or less a right off in terms of development, because teams will start to focus on 2026 as soon as they can. for example, i think (though as a fan i hate it) haas is rumored to sign ocon on his multi year deal. imo it’s because he has EXPERIENCE. and going into new regulations - that’s what you need. you need drivers that can comment on their car to their engineers to help with the development process. its going to be a race to nail the 2026 regulations as quickly as possible. because of this i’m SHOCKED bottas or sainz don’t have seats yet but on the flip side - this is why it doesn’t shock me liam hasn’t been signed just yet. cause as talented as yuki is, he doesn’t have the technical experience outside of the driver seat that someone like daniel has imo. i could totally just be gaslighting myself into why i think liam hasn’t signed just yet hahah but again - i think we’re just at a weird time for rookies to come in. (liam, kimi or jack, i think should all hold out just a little longer).
@sondosoft4603

I think De Vries’s performance is the direct reason Liam isn’t getting the seat. De Vries not working as expected heightened the caution they already had during the “let’s keep Pierre forever days”. Checo is a safe option so he stays, Yuki is doing too well and the Honda connection for now means he stays. And Daniel was a big gamble which hasn’t really paid off but he clearly has a lot of good will and marketability hence why he’s even still being considered. And you have to say that in this next season and a half if he gets it, he atleast beats Yuki then he may be option #1 to replace Checo. Because they clearly aren’t gonna promote Yuki, they clearly don’t want someone like Sainz who could be a real immediate threat to Max. Even if Liam or another junior got on they won’t be in RB for atleast a year. So I mean who else is there? Ricciardo is a gamble but for now he’s a gamble worth doubling down on. Lawson as good as his 5 races were, just doesn’t solve any of their immediate problems.

Not surprised if he doesn't make it to the grid next year it looks like once sainz makes his announcement everything else will just fall into place quickly. The fans have not understood the politics of F1 (ever thought there is less of it since liberty bought it) and that talent gives you no guarantee that you will make it, most teams only ever want one fast driver and one reliable driver (unless your Ferrari for 2025) others need sponsorship money so marketable drivers are a must and customer teams have to give up a seat to their engine suppliers (Haas and Williams). I can only see Bearman and Antonelli being the new comers next year with Liam being a reserve and getting a seat if Perez is let go or Yuki follows Honda out in 2026
