In this video, I discuss Autotune and Artificial Intelligence as it relates to modern and popular music. Is it Real or is it Disposable Plastic? Do you really want to listen to robots singing love songs to you?
Is It OK To Use Autotune For Singing?
As with all technology, it can be a good and a bad thing.
When autotune first came out, it was a bit of a novelty. One of the first songs to use autotune was Cher's famous song "Believe". It had a very robotic, computerized vocal sound that was more of a schtick or an electronic effect than a main staple for pitch.
Before long, autotune was being way over-used as a very obvious "effect" but still not at the level of relying on it for virtually every note in a song for pitch.
In this new world of "AI", we are finding that computers are atrophying our natural human abilities in every aspect of our lives. As silly as this may sound and in fear of sounding a bit of an "alarmist", it must be said.
We once used to travel by land or sea, by foot, by horseback or by boat, navigating by nothing more than the stars, traveling thousands of miles and reaching our destination with pinpoint accuracy. Today, many people rely on their GPS systems so heavily that they don't even know how to navigate their own cities for weeks or even months without the aid of their GPS.
I believe this has happened at so many levels. We once used to read books and allow our creative imaginations to take us to far-away places. Everyone experienced different interpretations, but we were still wowed by the magic of a great novel, poem, or story.
And at the advent of movies and TV, we are finding ourselves letting Hollywood do all of our thinking for us, turning our minds and brains off and surrendering our imaginations to those responsible for making such films.
In the name of technology and making our lives "easy", plenty has made us poor.
And as the generations roll along, the entitlements of technology are handicapping our hard work ethic and our ability to sharpen our minds and bodies.
This couldn't be more true for this generation of "Singers".
Where once we took two, three, or even four hours of practice per day to strive towards virtuosity, we now rely heavily on AI to do this work for us.
This isn't just true for singing. This is also true for learning to play instruments, and the list goes on and on within the realm of music.
In this video, we explore the dichotomy of this technology and what can be done about it.

My sentiment is that I would prefer hearing an artist's pure vocals during a performance. Even in the case that an artist is having issues with pitch during warm-up rehearsal before a live performance, I would still prefer that they would just duck the high notes of the lyrics then to listen to some autotune enhancements. Just detracts from the "feel" of the show for me as a spectator and/or listener.

Rush actually has a song about this remember? It's almost people want fast food everything.... including music. No one wants to wait and grow... they want it now and it's terrible. "All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted It's really just a question of your honesty Yeah, your honesty."

Well remembered and Spirit of the Radio is a song from 1980 from the album Permanent Waves. Let me complete the part you mentioned. "All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question Of your honesty, yeah, your honesty One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah"

I agree with you 10,000%. All of the automation takes the life out of a song. It is the little imperfections that give a performance its soul, and the singer/musician their "signature sound." I also think AI allows people that really can't sing or play an instrument that well to sound as if they do -- this ultimately tends to devalue those artists who have actually put in the time and hard work to hone their craft to a high level.

It is at its worst in pop music, where truly good singers have been autotuned with no actual need. But who would be the producer or production team to dare and stand up and kick the autotuner away and make the singer do it again until nailing it or leaving a few minor mistakes there in favour of the feeling ?

What do you think of an artist that can write really great songs, play instruments competently, but struggles to hold pitch live (even though their voice has a pleasant character)? And what if that artist doesn't use autotune (for the most part)? I think it's a bit easy to fixate on technique.. whether that's vocal, or instrumental. Sure we love great chops, but that is only one ingredient in the musical stew. Great compositions/songs/melody (probably the most important) and great tone/character probably rank higher than technique. As a guitarist myself I can think of many insane shredders, but they'll never sell as many records as Brian May (great melody and tone) and Queen. Dave Lee Roth was all over the place as a singer, he didn't contribute much to song writing (from a musical point of view) - so all he had was voice character and stage presence.

Yr comment is spot on Charles. Over produced crap is flooding the charts . The major labels are buying up 70s catalogs as much as they can . They know the stuff coming out is crap and has no shelf life. Songs written n played by real musos from the 70s keep giving all they have to do is rework these songs for updated sound put a young singer on them they have a great track giving again . There are some young artist out there who can write etc but the way the system is set up now they cant break through .

I hate autotune. I don't listen any music with autotune and i'm 18. I don't think it's old school ken you're %100 right. If we consider music as an art we should accept it as it is. So many artist from 70s 80s and 90s who stills sings to this day goes out of pitch lots of times but even so it gives the song many feelings.

I’m with you Ken, nothing replaces human artistry. AutoTune does not sing for you, it helps you fix the imperfections of your singing. If you want to fix those imperfections without software, you need a singing teacher or course like yours (I am one of your students). You have the best singing course in the world. But I see AutoTune as a motivator to take classes like yours because it shows me glimpse of the potential my voice has if I train with a real coach like yourself. Singing well is really hard and it takes a loooot of time. It could be frustrating and can sometimes push you to quit or to put it off. But AutoTune in combination with a great academy like yours, can encourage you to keep going, to keep moving forward, to maintain that subscription for longer, etc. Nothing can help you more than a real person but a plug-in I believe could be used as a motivational tool, like a poster board kind of tool. Long live the human artists! ❤️

Dude, I'm watching this now (and will watch the entire video) but to me, it's absolutely NOT okay to use Auto-tune. As I'm typing this, you're mentioning 'call me old-school' which I was going to say the same! I truly believe that one of the reasons that older music is still more popular than the newer stuff is because of things like Auto-tune and having everything 'perfect' even if it means faking it. I'm not a phenomenal vocalist but I refuse to use it. I'd rather hear those subtle nuances that bring life to the song! Of course, if you're that far off, then you need to simply re-record it! But the subtle imperfections are what make music so great!

I think if it’s to create an effect or a vibe, yes. Autotune by itself isn’t bad. Cher used it. But other than that, I don’t see why people can’t use their real voices

I agree. If it’s being used almost as an instrument itself - as in that Kygo and Selena Gomez song, for instance - it’s wonderful. But when it’s used to buff and polish traditional vocals to meet an imposed standard, no way.

I agree with you 1000%. I teach primary school, and the music these kids listen to is 100% pure robotic nowadays. Listening to it when they play it for ten minutes in the classroom, it gives me real physical headaches, it’s not a joke! I seized the opportunity at Halloween to show them Michael Jackson’s ”Ghosts” and get them interested in his music, so at least every now and then I get to hear real music now from an artist whose pitch was so perfect, he had no need for autotune. When I told them that they looked at me in disbelief - they didn’t even know people used to perform without in the past, they think this is the normal standard! I was shocked. And you know what else I noticed? When we play Michael’s music, the atmosphere in the classroom isrelaxed and peaceful, everybody’ssmiling and humming along. When they play ”their” music, it doesn’t take 15 minutes, and they’ll be quarreling and testy and there’s tangible negativity all around. I found that interesting to observe recently. We need human warmth and feelings back in our music urgently!

I agree! I could never use auto tune on my singing voice and be comfortable or content with knowing that I used auto tune to perfect it. Like you said, it just isn't real. I wanna be able to listen to my recordings and know that even if it took me 10 or 15 takes, it was me naturally singing it.

There’s a reason there is very little quality music over the past few years. Everything is “fixed “ in the studio, bands playing to tracks instead of completely live, etc. Sadly the days of true musicianship and real bands that are tight are gone. There are no more Toto’s, Chicago’s, Zeppelins, Deep Purple’s and so on. I personally look for good, solid, real music, not “fake” perfection. I don’t bash today’s product, I understand technology has taken over. I just don’t bother with it. Thanks for keeping it real Ken Tamplin!

Depends on the context. Acoustic music? Not so great for that. Electronic music? Sure. (And I like both kinds.) To quote Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural principle, "form follows function/function follows form", so, "context is king." Works well for stuff like Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, sci-fi music robot music/dance music. Does not sound right applied to something like Simon and Garfunkle (thanks, Wings of Pegasus!). Used as an "effect"? Sure. Used as a *deceptive* cover for bad singing? No way!

Good video, important topic. I think Ken is mostly referring to auto-tuning being caked on so thick that it becomes TOTALLY over the top. Really a "vocoder/synth voice" fad. I feel the same as Ken, it does nothing for me. However, I also think people make way too much of a big deal out of auto-tuning. It is just a tool. Correcting 3 seconds of content so you don't have to rerecord an entire tune and spend more time and money, is perfectly fine. IMO, auto-tuning is perfectly fine IF.. it is used sparsely and for a few spots. 5 seconds out of a 7-minute song means nothing, other than the singer is trying to save money, time and just get the damn thing done. Simply put, if I use 5 seconds of auto-tuning to fix a moment, it doesn't mean I can't sing. It doesn't mean I'm a big cheater. It only means I want to save some time, money, keep moving, and frankly, don't give a shit about trivial concerns. Apart from the fact, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, has used some auto-tuning before to touch up a few seconds of content. It's simply not a big deal and means nothing to do so. But when you cake it on so bad that you sound like a cyborg and use it to hide everything, that totally sucks... not into that.

I think your point is spot on. I think this is also the difference between classic rock or classic hip hop that makes them epic. I don’t see anything that will be held as memorable about the new music but you could change the world. I have albums on spodify my artist name is D.T. Phenomenal and I was back and fourth with the use of stuff like auto tune. I do realize I appreciate my songs without it more especially after watching you for a while and I want to put your methods to the test on my next projects. The subtle use of auto tune is no more in modern music it’s just set your scale and vocals are perfect. I’m interested to hear your take on the fact that auto tune is now a lead effect in like every song whether your rapping or singing and is classic music the only music that will carry an epic reputation. You are truly the man.

He chewed gum during takes but the character of that is what makes it so great.

Ken, I remember bands and solo artists that relied so heavily on AT in the studio (when it first really hit main stream) that when they would sing in live performance it was a disappointment. Their vocals would be off pitch and forget hitting certain high notes. They could not replicate what AT did in studio, in a live venue. It can make artists lazy but not only that, there is no authenticity. It's rather sad and it still continues today.

I remember that Cher song. I loved it because the auto tune was so noticeable it was like a cool effect. Also I remember being amazed at the first CD I bought because I could hear little background noises that brought the music to life. Now a days they use it to mask mistakes an it ruins the natural sound of the voice. Noise filters, auto tune, pitch correct etc… all to make the “perfect” sound when nobody’s perfect and perfection is just you.

Organic music: that's a great name for it. The little (sometimes big) mistakes add so much charm to music. Listen to Charlie Watts' drumming on "Honky Tonk Women." He starts at one tempo and ends like 5-10 bpm faster, and it's beautiful and perfect in its own way. The out-of-tune 12 string guitar on "Band On The Run." The little botch in "I Saw Her Again" where John Phillips starts singing in the wrong spot, and producer Lou Adler recognized its beauty and left it in. Symmetry isn't nearly as important as it's made out to be.

Absolutely correct Ken. As most of us who watch your channel have probably said, our favorite artists werent great because they were perfect. Far from it actually. It was the variations in their voices, the inflections in how they sang that made them great. In how they manipulated their God given "instrument" to create a unique sound that only they had. Can you honestly tell one pop star from another these days with how over-produced every bar of music they sing is? I certainly can't. But any of us could INSTANTLY tell you when we hear Freddie, Dio, Aretha, Ray Charles, Coverdale, Sting, and on and on. They are all so distinct, that even if you hadn't ever heard the song before, you know it's them. THAT'S true greatness. THAT'S true artistry.

Great video, as always! I rarely use auto-tune, unless I have a slightly obvious 'pitch glitch' in a definite take. I'm from the old school, pre-autotune era. I allow the artist to go through the number as many times as possible until they feel comfortable and 'into' the track. At that time, I press the record button without the artist's being aware. Most times, within a couple of takes, the artist will nail it. Then we go back and touch it up. I go for heart, and not so much perfection, unless an artist insists. Spontaneity is key to nailing a great performance, not so much slight pitch imperfections. Pitch correction sounds too much like R2D2; sterile and computerized.

Even with autotune and automation, it's still an art. We can now make sounds that were not achievable in prior years. Live music is an amazing experience that we should not let go of, but we should embrace the new and add it to the old. A point to you is that many singer over-rely on autotune to make them sound good instead of practicing. Any standard joe with autotune can sing on pitch, but good singers can still add life with the automation still present. Overall, new music isn't bad, the top 100 has always been bad. All of the greats that oldies gloat about were nowhere near as popular as the watered-down pop acts that has no substance.

I definitely agree. Of course, it is possible to make original and interesting music with samples and computers - and maybe even exploit the possibilities in vocal sounds for a certain atmosphere, but I absolutely despise that overprocessing has emerged as a standard for literally all mainstream music. There is this youtube series where contemporary artists sing a cappella with absolutely no effects and there are too many examples of those who don't sound the slightest how they do in their hit songs. Overprocessed food makes us fat and unhealthy. Overprocessed music numbs our souls eventually.

For practising and recording i use the "robot technique" i use variaudio which is like autotune to create a ultra precise vocal line and to find harmonies ... and then i learn these tracks be cause there are often the in between notes that are off and hard to pin down. When it comes to recording i try to stay real but sometimes when i have to decide to take the take with not so good intonation but amazing emotions i sometimes take the one with the feel and fix it by hand with variaudio, just so much that it does not come across wrong ... but yeah, of course the real thing is the best thing but even in teaching variaudio helps so much to pin down every wrong note and give immediatly feedback how the right note would sound by putting it on the grid...

I don't blame you. I admit, I do listen to some pop music that has autotune from my childhood in 2000s and my teenhood in early 2010s, only if they make sense. But now, I rarely listen to modern pop and hip hop music because of too much autotune. It's like eating too much technological junkfood. The labels should invest people who need autotune if they naturally sing right. For example, Billie Eilish, Adele, and other old, but gold artists who my late father, Mr. Ken Tamplin, Mr. Rick Beato, and other adults grew up with before me.

It's a race to the bottom for sure. You've got to learn to play your instruments, vocals included. Definitely some grey areas when it comes to things like MIDI pianos and virtual guitar amps used to do a performance. Worst thing of all to me is the "chord pack". Write music without knowing anything about music or how to play any instruments. Fantastic!

You are basically correct. Auto tune or any pitch correction software can have two key uses. First as a tool to “correct” or fix a problem. In this case its use should be NOT noticeable. Second it (since Cher) is used as an effect. It is most “effective” if used with organic instrumentation with an auto-tuned vocal. Daft Punk is a great example with organic Nile Rogers and Paul Jackson’s rhythm guitars and Bassist Nathan East and JR Robinson drums. Also this is heavy EDM where great vocal work isn’t the prime element. Moby did great work with samples and organic elements. Also recorded music is basically an illusion. Often not mentioned in these discussions is the fact that vocals were often “comped” requiring a lot of time and effort in engineering. Drums were looped. The great Jeff Porcaro’s work on “Africa” was looped. (He created and played the part). Where I really agree with you is many songs (mostly Spotify top pop) are a collection of sounds with a heavily auto tuned vocal on top. The superb session guitarist Tim Pierce (recommend his YT channel) in a discussion on Beato’s channel half jokingly noted that much of today’s music is created by a guy with a lap top and a celebrity.

At a recent concert of a long time performer I noticed some of his pitches were just a little bit off. At first I was thinking it was going to go downhill, but I actually found myself really getting into the songs and realizing very few do have perfection in their singing. He put his heart into it and the fans, myself included, were going nuts as we would have 40 plus years ago. It was wonderful. I agree if it's used for an effect like Cher did then fine, but if it's all auto tune and artificial does an artist even need to get credit beyond just structure for a song and not the possible millions as a bonefide performer?

Give me a vocal performance with a few carbuncles anytime over something autotuned. Frankly it's a quirk that expired after its first use. There's a great vocal slip-up by Paul McCartney on 'If I fell' where his voice breaks/ cracks on the phrase 'in vain'. It doesn't detract from the performance but adds a human element and fragility. I guess what I'm saying after that long winded rant is I agree with you Ken 😀

100% AGREE! Gen-Z has no idea what REAL music is. They are only up on AI generated music. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and individuality is what makes the music. Also with that being said most musicians had some talent under their belt regardless of the form may it be vocal or instrument or both but it was all 100% organic. All these younger music freaks only know Lip syncing and auto-tune and when they hear genuine music they don't like it because it isn't manufactured. I'm going to reference Def Leppard for a second and not in a bad way because who doesn't love themselves some Def Leppard? When Rick Allen lost his arm, the choice was synth drums but it defined their sound, their vocals were still real and they were still Def Leppard with a twist. Rick Allen is an original member of the group, the only member ever replaced for lack of drive was Pete Willis and the late Steve Clark replaced him (the only reason Steve Clark was replaced was due to his untimely death) Vivian Campbell (Originally from DIO, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Sweet Savage, Trinity, Riverdogs, and Shadow King and I think a few more) was his successor. When you went and seen these bands live the energy was real you felt every ounce of the music and the vocals even when they messed up but it was a highlight you wanted that rawness. Granted I'm in my 40's and I listen to all sorts of music (the 80's will forever be my go to) but I can appreciate several genres and your newer genres are massively produced by AI over human tracking and layering and it does steal the authenticity of the artist's true vocals or instrumental talents. If I was the artist today in the AI world I'm be pissed because I'm paying major dollars for it to be computer generated without individuality and no real work done to my track or album. I'd look back at the older music and see what was paid for and likely want my music to be produced organically especially with the amount of money I'm shelling out to have someone mass produce it taking individuality and personalization away from it. #TrueMusic

I think another aspect of auto tuning is for style choices too though, like for EDM/electro music or dance it’s essential to use for texture and style and a lot of modern music now is within those genres as opposed to rock, blues ect. that sounds more appropriate with organic instruments.

So on point. I remember in this new Robocop movie, there's a scene where a guy tries to play a acoustic guitar with mechanical arms and he could not express what he was feeling because of automation. Same works for pictures, movies, translations, narrations... I like the quote "don't go for the quick fix". I believe the true expression is to go beyond limits, is to be able to CREATE even in a cover song. Artificiality by definition is an imitation, so it works inside a program scope.

I agree I really only like it when it’s used as an obvious effect. The worst is when it’s overly applied and we aren’t supposed to notice. The television show Glee was an example. Ken, also agree with your opinion on autotune, especially the way it's over used in a lot of music and it does sound artificial. In my opinion autotune detracts feel and emotion from the song and that type music does not last the test of time!

I'm blessed and fortunate in that I got to see some of the greatest bands to ever take a stage in concert back in the 70's & early 80's... What we got back then was actually a live sound & performance.. This is why you went to shows--- to see & hear these great artists sing & play their instruments without musical crutches, backing tracks, pitch finders or other safety nets.. Sadly, today it is little more than Karaoke on steroids..

When Black Sabbath recorded war pigs, Ozzy was going a little sharp at the start, and Tony Iommi plays one of the parts 1 measure too long (comes in 1 measure late), and you listen to the song - and it kicks ass because it's REAL! It is the sound of an aweome group of rockers laying down the real music! Auto-tuned vocals remove all of the personality / soul / nuances of the singer and it becomes plastic and artificial - just like you said brother! 🎵☮🧡😁

On cutting and pasting... well, I use it partly myself. I'm mainly a drummer and I cut and paste my guitarparts, mostly because I'm not good enough to play a whole song without messing something up sooner or later, but most of the time it's hard to tell in my recordings since I usually record the bass, drums and vocals from start to end, with variations.

I was waiting for this video, A week ago, I let a friend here a song I produced and wrote, he said that it was too 80s that I had to do something with the vocals. Too me my ability to change octaves in any song or have no layers was just good for me I had to ignore his opinion. There was no way I was using any effects like auto tune, One thing people forget is that you have to perform these songs live. but anyways I think I will stick with the 80s and they way I sound. The more tracks I produce and write the better. I do love old school reverb.

one of the things that always bugs me about music production and that always really stands out to me is the chorus. So many songs you listen to and the best chorus take in the studio has been copy/pasted across to every instance in the song. You lose so much nuance in naturally singing a song start to finish. It's what I love about Maiden tbh - yeah they're still cutting and mixing tracks to get the best overall performance but Bruce sings every chorus and you can hear it come through on the record. Songs like the Wickerman, speed of light, even writing on the wall where you have effectively a 2 line chorus, but every chorus is different and even the repeated lines in a single chorus is different. That's real music right there and it gives the track life

As alwyas, you have so manu great points Ken. I agree with you, with AI, Autotune or whatever is being used, it takes all the human elements out of the process, and just leaves us with a ``fake`` final product, that feels like it was entirely made with on a computer, and no humans was actually involved in the making of the song. That makes me kind of sad to think about how it where, and how it is now. I will personally NEVER, use Autotune or anything like that, when i make my own original music some day. I would much rather have people say and think that i sound `bad` or whatever and that is 100% me they are hearing, instead of alot of fans liking my music, and it is basically made on a computer, and i could just as well not had been apart of making the song at all.

Caveat. I am not a singer. This video was super interesting, and probably explains why I don't buy music anymore, not since, oh, 2000? It all now sounds the same to me. In hindsight, I realise it's around the time when all artists started wearing those ear monitors, which always irked me. I'm in my 50s, and in the early days of internet, I used to trip out on Shirley Bassey songs, my 70s80s90s albums were Alanis Morisette, Donna Summers, Boule Noire, Nanette Workman Karen Carpenter Helen Ready Barbara Streisand Bee Gees Iron Butterfly Ram Jam, then, we became fanatics of MTVs unplugged series, and now when you listen to singers today, those older un-produced recordings (not studio and album versions) sound so "imperfect". As many people who are moved by music, I sing along to music, and sing to myself, in all settings. I have a quite wide range, but my pitch is terrible. I tried choir singing as a youth and couldn't hold, or find, a note if my life depended on it. But my vocal tones are nice, and have good vibrato and breath control, and can vary the colours, and lots of people who've heard me sing stuff like Amazing Grace or Summer Time or White Rabbit or (or various songs by Mireille Mathieu or Karen Young or Simon and Garfunkul), which are difficult songs to sing, said I was a pretty good singer... , but those particular notes just tend to work for me. My aunt was a classical-contemporary crossover singer in the 70s, and she's asked me to sing Amazing Grace at her funeral (I will not, I know she was being a little too nice). If I was a kid today, I guess I might have been able to have a singing career, as my principle fault was not actually having correct pitch. I can replicate notes, that's it. Auto-tune sounds fun, maybe I'll up the ante and auto-tune myself for my singing in my old age and pretend I'm young and capable! HAHAHA! But once in a blue moon, a singer does come around that captures my heart, like Dimash, and I try to focus on his less produced performances. But even beyond all the techy production, even reverb is sometimes too much for me. Without all the production, Dimash would actually sound a lot like Barbara Streisand! @Ken Tamplin You should revive the concept of MTV unplugged. After two years of so few live concerts, and all musical experiences being digitised, maybe the world is ready for real vocals again. Thank you!

I agree with Ken...think of artists like Michael Jackson or Prince..they never needed auto-tune because they practiced, practiced, practiced...hours listening to themselves until they were pleased with their own work. As a software developer myself, I have to stress that the intention is for technology to help you improve...not do your work for you.

I mean if you wanna sound like a robot you can either harmonize your voice with the falsecords (and pitch that a little higher)or you can overlay a whisper with your full voice (tip try it in headvoice) and boom you sing a complete chord. (I do not take response for damaged voices if you did it incorrectly and please consider drinking plenty of water befor you even touch such techniques. THEY ARE NOT FOR BEGINNERS.) I don't hate using tools in order to make music by it self. Prince played all the instruments by himself. And without recording technology that's impossible. And I personaly sometimes use a loopstation (it just repeats what I played so I'm still creating.) In order to provide a rythm for my voice. But AI? Well that's another topic. I mean common you can cool stuff with it like using dolphin sounds for the drums or screams for the guitar. Or what so ever when you use it just go innovativ with that. But just quantizing is pure lazzyness. Or you do it like modern hip hop. Cut out the drums of a preexisting song or use an open beat. And put some bass to it and boom finnish because you know most the weight is on the beat so the mistakes above are less noticable. (I guess that's the whole Idea.)
