In this video I try to beat Half Life 1 without taking damage. I disabled the healing of the med kits and then lowered my health to 1. If I take any damage I die. Can I beat the game with this handicap? Watch the video to find out.
@@KazyMatmanyep especially in a challenge like this To be honest you can play a singleplayer game however you want since its not ruining anyone else's experience
Gordon is just sprinting around Black Mesa, bleeding to death and a stiff breeze away from keeling over, and yet. Still does better than anyone else in that building at containing the Xen invasion. What a guy.
just goes to show how incompetent the HECU, Black Mesa Security, and even the Black Ops soldiers are at their jobs when some random MIT graduate with an orange suit and a crowbar just baps 'em
This is just the way I always play Half Life. I find health, I do something stupid to lose all but a couple hp, then spend an hour repeatedly retrying a section until I get the super specific way of getting through without damage, repeat.
I kinda do the opposite. Play super careful, save scum to make it through most sections without losing more than x health. Find a massive stockpile of shields and health 2 corridors down
Saw the the title and immediately thought "he'll never get passed the freezer section" and then did the guy spitting cereal meme when you actually completed this challenge. Great video, loved the Opposing Force music
Considering it still DAMAGES the player if they have more than 1 hitpoint, I'd say it's still not possible. This is more of a 1-HP run rather than a full on no-damage run.
3:35 HL1 has weird behavior when it comes to corpses and moving map geometry like fans or those platforms around the generator in Blast Pit. For some reason if you're inside the corpse's "hitbox" i guess, while something like that is moving, you get instakilled. Dunno _why_ though.
Maybe the damage gets "absorbed" by the entity and since your hitbox overlaps (in certain areas) with the corpse entity itself you both take damage since it tries to deal damage to the whole corpse hitbox Kinda like conducting electricity maybe?
No no no, it would actually be easier as he wouldn’t be told he was actively bleeding out and would also probably not even survive the anti mass spectrometer in the initial sequence. The HEV suit drained his health in order to get the nice music at the beginning and he never could patch his wounds.
He’s at risk even with that suit on. There was way too much activity, attacks in various ways from multiple parties, as well as so many environmental hazards in the facility that puts Freeman at risk of being severely injured and even dying, even with that God tier HEV suit on. Plus, he never wore a helmet the entire time from Sector C to Xen the whole game. Just the suit.
@TheTechCguy Granted, the helmet was possibly a little hard to see with glasses. Though I don't wear glasses and a black visor for my helmets. But that would beg the question.. Why do Gina's and Cross's suits not get helmet? But every other H.E.V user in Lambda get them? Perhaps Gordon, Gina, and Cross were at the least of dangerous tasks, and the ones at the Lambda Complex were more needed than those at Sector-C.
Fun Fact: in Surface Tension (or any chapter with an Icthyosaur and some room), you can get the Icthyosaur to swim up under you and take you to the surface. it will be locked in place for as long as you stand on it, and if you jump, the Icthyosaur raises a little. So by spamming the jump button, you can levitate.
I have steam version and the fish literally always get glitched when they try to attack me. Not sure how to explain it by their attack sound plays over and over and even if I stand still they don’t hit me. The heli in surface tension also always crashes itself before I can shoot it down
Imagine playing back in '99 with a dogshit trackball mouse and a fuzzy CRT monitor. The fact that they do as much damage as they do is a little bit psychotic
17:40 Looks like they really went to pieces after you rejected them. Thank you as always for taking on a challenge I was mildly curious about but knew would probably begin to boil me alive not long into starting it. I'm sure my number of deaths would have hypothetically doubled yours, and I would have probably just quit after the first few hundred.
For the fan room I’m pretty sure there’s a small death wall as a way to try and teach new players to turn off the power before trying to get the loot. But since the wall isn’t actually big enough it doesn’t 100% work
@@KazyMatman Just tested and yes, turning off the power turns off the fan. It doesn't even stop instantly - when you turn off the power it gradually slows to a halt, but you're only fast enough to see it if you noclip.
@@JohnNash-lt1ny i know, but uploader started with 1 hp as his rule, and i didn't know that you don't die in the freezer like that. But i was thinking about a lot of other places in the video:D
@@MisuAlexandru1 fair enough. I can’t get past any combat section in this game without getting damaged so no hate from me. Every damn head crab in this game hits me once before it dies lol
In ten years time there will be a SummoninSalt video titled "The history of Half-Life No Hit Speedrunning". And this historical achievement will be at the start of the video
Shutting the light switch in the water room in office complex will shut off the fan in the vents that kept killing you. Not sure if you knew this already. Also 9:28 "make it black into back mesa" made me laugh. Also, to your ending point, you absolutely CAN soft lock your game if you quick save at a really bad spot with low health. Like saving right as a headcrab attacks from behind, leaving you no time to avoid it when you load your save. You only proved that it's possible to not soft lock your game if you are careful with your quick saves, or are lucky enough for it not to cause a problem. However, just reloading the last autosave solves the issue, albeit costing up to an hour of game play, causing you to have to replay some sections.
@@galladegamerletsplays well yes of course. Not everyone thinks ahead like that though lol most people keep a single save slot and just overwrite it whenever they save the game. Always keep multiple saves if the game allows for it for this very reason
The claw gun you get from the grunts is excellent at killing baby headcrabs and chipping away at enemies’ health from behind cover since the primary fire seeks out targets.
I’d like to think this is the canon playthrough of half life. Gordon gets hit by the anti mass spectrometer during the resonance cascade, and that same cascade ceased the HEV and medkits to stop functioning. Gordon doesn’t bother destroying crates or exploring, he’s just trying to get through everything as fast as possible to avoid death. GMan is even more impressed that Gordon did this while on the brink of death.
20:03 Actually, I think that generator takes only ONE hit to break, it just doesn't kaboom immediately. If you listen, it starts doing the overload sound after the first shot but only explodes when the sound is finished, just like when you do it with the crowbar.
"Just like the Vikings did it" ...with Glocks? ..actually, i'm not surprised, if the aliens gave them glocks, they basically would have been the hammer of god... ...*stargate conspiracy theory grows*...
Once you fire the test rocket motor in Blast Pit you get the fire damage symbol but dont get damage at least when low health. I just learned this this year I think, although I've played the game since 1998, I used to try to tuck my self in the further most corner to protect my self before xD. I guess they made so that you would not get soft locked from progression and the fire damage indicator is just for immersion it seems.
Dang man, you beat me to it! I had finished recording footage through Gonarch, but I lost the recordings. I was considering reattempting the challenge, but then I saw this video! Great job! This challenge is no joke!
4:28 You can turn off the electricity here if you're observant enough to notice the light switch on the wall left of the entrance (You may already know this idk)
@@KazyMatman that training was the best in the world. it got every scientist to become better than the US military. (they just dont know how to pick up guns, dont have the guts to shoot, or didnt have access to any)
Someone never played Sven Co-op Hardcore servers. It's basically the same but the enemies are running at 6x the speed and instagib u in milliseconds. And it's still possible to beat the game even that way
3:32 I believe the fans killbox is slightly to large I encountered this during a normal play through I do believe it's the fan because even during a normal play through I still die
@@rm_steele oh I'm sorry I don't use proper punctuation when making a comment on a video that I can't really prove and am just trying to provide a little insight into what might be happening so I'm sorry my lack of punctuation offends you but this is not a professional environment this is the RU-vid comment section
@@Kateykat it's not an issue of professionalism lol, it's an issue of readability. if i cared about professionalism i wouldn't be passive aggressively telling you to stop rambling, and i wouldn't be on youtube
You said that Gordon doesn’t have weapon training. Well he actually does, according to the lore he has done multiple HEV hazard courses where he got his weapon training
Aside from this type of run, I seriously don’t see why so many people don’t like on a rail. It’s not anything amazing imo, but the fact that I don’t see it, and yet I still am relying on my level design for *multiple* projects makes me scared and question my skills. 😅
yes if you click the buttons. 1 can of soda equals 1 hp. But if you break the machine the soda's that spill out dont, as far as I can remember in the original version at least.
I refuse to believe this is Gordon. Hes super cool and doesnt afraid of anyone. This guy is ivan the space biker. The beard hides his 1 hp 0 armor glass jaw.
question out of curiosity, why did you use the original steampipe release (or won release, correct me if im wrong) instead of the current 25th anniversary release?
A lot of it is also possible only using the crowbar too. Sometimes the soldiers end up getting killed by their own grenades and you an just wait them out, like at 22:48. Is it possible to beat half-life using only the crowbar without taking any damage?
You do know you can close that shield in front of Blast Pit to avoid taking any damage from the tentacles or fire at all. And you could have skipped We've Got Hostiles! completely.
