@@ls190v2 There's nothing wrong with having a game shark to see all the interesting features "Cheating" has to offer. You get all cards, infinite ichikaro meter...ichikaro is japanese for one-hit knockout and a feature that allows you to instantly KO everyone else with the push of a single button. SEGA was really weird when it came to making games on an Nintendo system. Also: Sonic's Axe Kick aim attack could have been his Meteor Smash in Smash Brothers but he was rushed so they gave him Pikachu's forward A attack but with no electric shock affect.
@@DarknessXxMaster, I wasn't saying all cheating is bad. Cheating in games like CS:2? Bad. Cheating in a singleplayer mode of an old game? That's fine.
@@Eldoofus I just want to know if Gemerl has any of Emerl's memories or not because he technically caused the raid on the ARK. He caused a minor incident that G.U.N. looked into which lead into the raid and I feel like he and Shadow deserve a good conversation on the matter.
As a kid, I got to the part where you have to dodge Rouge for 2 minutes before I realized upgrading Emerl was possible. Safe to say the game got substantially easier after that.
Yeah, his ground specials don’t count as specials actually. If the enemy is auto blocking shot, the special will still kill them. It can still be blocked manually though.
Rouge being so unimpressed that she gives it a pass as not being a special move is also in character, though it'd come with a sassy remark. "Calling those special moves would be like comparing pyrite to gold."
the special that you don't chose is used up as a defense option. that means you automatically block whenever you are hit with the corresponding special. for instance getting hit by an shot special with shot as defense will block that move regardless if you press l or not which is why at 16:21 gamma blocks emeral's special in mid air.
Also: He later mentions the enemy never blocking some special moves of Emerl's, and I believe it's because they don't have those special types. The Jazz Hands doesn't produce a trap, so it's not blocked by Set type block.
@@calemr Yeah that makes sense. Not sure if its an oversight or intentional. Either way it did make the run a lot easier. That would also explain why it didn't fail him for the Rouge mission where he needed to ko her 10 times without a special move.
That makes so much sense. I’ve just been mashing A when the special move menu pops up so I’ve been wondering why walking up to the other characters’ land mines automatically blocked it. Also yeah, I think the game only counts the landmines and shock waves parts of the special moves as the special move. Which is why Emerl’s grounded SET can’t be blocked, and why using the grounded SHOT was viable in Rouge’s ‘don’t use special moves’ battle.
The reason why sometimes enemies block specials in the air is because when you're choosing your special, the one that isn't chosen becomes an auto block for that special. So if you didn't choose POW, then you will auto block every POW special no matter what. What's interesting, though, is how you can fool the system. Namely with Emerl's and Sonic's ground shot. Because it's a rip-off of Sonic's, it runs on the same mechanics, and it just so happens that what the auto guard blocks is everything after the energy wave from the shot is generated. It doesn't consider anything else as part of the special attack. Which means that when Emerl and Sonic use their ground shot and attacks an enemy the first couple frames of the attack where they get in a spin ball and is about to release an energy wave (that doesn't exist in Emerl's case) doesn't get auto blocked. But because it's still part of the special attack animation, while the auto guard ignores it, the one hit K.O special bar doesn't. It sees it as part of the attack and thus kills the enemy in one hit even though the auto block should protect them.
i accidentally did (most of) this as a kid, because i didn't know how to customize emerl, so i was stuck with his crap start moves. you have no idea how unfair i thought it was when he was the final boss and was way stronger than when i used him
I'm pretty sure rouge doesn't lie about special moves(I remember her stopping battle in regular playthrough), maybe devs took pity and don't consider default emerl specials as specials?
Emerl's specials don't get counted as specials due to lacking certain components. On the other hand I think some ULT non-specials can cause you to fail the fight due to having special components.
20:10 They don't block Emerl's set move because they need an explosion to block it. Same reason why Sonic's (and by extension Emerl's) first hit of their shot attack can hit the opponents but they block the second one. Also, you had to look up Emerl's (and by extension Sonic) infinite crit attack exploit, where you use their air shot and just before sending the wave you hit the ground. Like that, you insta kill the opponent and keep the crit meter. Would have made the battles go much easier and with much less planning and strategy making, all down to execution. (Strategy taken from a Speedrun)
Finally is someone mad enough to try this insane thing. I love Sonic Battle, but boy do I have some problem with pacing and the goddamn grinding. Sega please make a remake of this game
I'd like to thank you for undertaking questions that are both concievably possible while also being difficult enough that it is genuinely uncertain as to whether you'll succees
12:22 If you quit the fight, Rouge thinks you've succesfully evaded her for the entire fight Fun fact about cosmetic skills: the E-102/Gamma stance actually makes you explode The reason some specials are blocked midair is because opponents chose that category as their 3rd (ie block special). Killing a COM with a special will have 'em switch to it as their defensive to block you. HOWEVER Emerl has at least 1 nerfed special (maybe 2 iirc) that don't even trigger the autoblock!!
22:27 the heartattack would be if you had any special that did an explosion/projectile it only stops you from those attacks. Funny enough if you use rouge special kick I think it wont count which is an oof.
So, the thing about Emerl's base specials is that they're incomplete versions of Sonic's Specials, everyone knows that. The reason you were probably able to get away with using them so much is because Sonic's Shot and Grounded Set Specials have two components: The drop, and the actual projectile/bomb. Even on Sonic, the drop component (Where he's revved up or flicking his wrist to drop the bomb) has an active hitbox which functions bizarrely. They're simultaneously considered as both Normals and Specials, because the game will treat them as normals for 99% of instances, but they can still become Oneshots with the Super Meter. Since Emerl's copies don't have the actual projectile/explosive, they exploit the system just by being incomplete. The only other moves in the game that have this kind of property are most hits of Emerl's unique Combo Specials (The ones where he'll use one character's jab combos in a turbo loop before ending on one of their finishers/specials)
im so glad you did this video. this game is so massively underrated and under talked about. this is still on my top 5 sonic games of all time, such a shame people dont acknowledge it. i partly blame sega for not porting it to modern hardware and platforms just like with a vast majority of other sonic games.
@@Tsuki_Hisui gameplay is fun and simple imo. most fighting games have lots of complicated button combos. only flaw with this games gameplay is that its too easy to spam special moves with R button, and the storymode has too much grinding and padding.
@@Kiezly For me at least it feels a bit too simple. Sonic the fighters feels like it reaches a better balance. I get that the complexity of most fighting games can scare some people away but there still needs to be enough of it so that there's room for player growth and expression. There's a reason why sonic the fighters managed to build a competitive community while battle remains mostly ignored
@@Tsuki_Hisui maybe someone should make a overhaul mod for Battle to make it cometitive like Fighters? idk. to me it was a beat em up game not a competitive game. its a casual party game not a serious game. i see it as a beginners fighting game like how Mario RPG was designed for people who never played an RPG before
Fun fact: You missed the Chase Gimmick. Inmediately After you use the launcher attack, if you double tap the direction in which the opponent flew off, your character will do a high-speed dash right to where the opponent is, and pressing B will make them do a follow-up knock down, that sends the opponent to the ground, and deals a lot of damage
I got sonic battle a little after its release when I was a kid. I was sick and my grandmother kept me home from school- she took me to toys r us after the doctors appt and she bought me it. This game became my legitimate obsession- I played it nonstop all day everyday. I miss this game, I wish they’d do something like this again 😭😭
NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! (ps if you need challenge ideas, I recommend beating sonic forces with the least amount of rings possible, it is HELL trying to avoid some of the rings)
I loved Sonic Battle back when I played it as a kid, but I remembered it being way harder than you made it look, even with your challenge in mind. Maybe I just didn't have a solid grasp of its mechanics, or the mind to take advantage of the more overpowered moves. There's a lot of trivia I remember about this game, but surprisingly most of it wouldn't have helped with this run, especially with the rule of not using special moves with the other characters. For example I think there's a mechanic where your opponent will be set to block the last special you hit them with when they respawn, but other comments have already pointed out that Emerl's stubby specials barely count as specials and would ignore that rule.
Haha... I remember how I didn't know Emerl was upgradable (I skipped a lot of dialogue) until I beat the game... You can imagine how unfathomably sick I was when I fought Ultimate Emerl.
I actually did this as a kid because I was an idiot. When customizing Emerl, you're supposed to press the R button or whatever to go to the next page of things to customize, which I somehow never found. So I went through the entire game spamming the shitty version of Sonic's shot special. Good times
4:14 Also if you get launched by another character but hold the d-pad in the opposite direction, if you hit a wall you will also charge it that way as well.
I absolutely loved this game, i grew up on flashgames and the sprites just make me so happy to see. Also you have such a cute voice and i hope you get told that often! For a name you should totes do Maudes Marauders and do a sonic chronicles video lol
You're kidding, Sonic Battle too? I love this game. I unintentionally did this challenge back when I was a kid, sort of. I didn't know you could swap pages in the move menu for years, so I only changed movement and defensive options, lol Edit: Through my experience of doing this, I can tell you that Emerl's shot and bomb moves are actually pretty busted. Sure, they don't really...shoot, anything, but the resulting spike ball or jazz hands smack cannot be blocked by an opponent, even if they select shot or bomb as their block special. Which means, you can farm instant kills on those all you like by healing during downtime, since healing raises the charge bar even if you're not restoring health with it. I believe the only line of specials that the opponent can block automatically on Emerl are his power specials. I have fond memories of using electric jazz hands on my enemies back in the day, lol Edit edit: It's why you were able to use those moves in Rouge's "don't use special moves" challenge, because the game apparently doesn't consider them to be special moves, despite the fact you can get instant kills with them. Really wierd.
@@___________0Z0X Doesn't block special moves, for sure. I've found that they can be extremely block happy on certain basic attack strings, heavy attacks and upper attacks, though.
The reason gamma could block specials sometimes is determimed when they respawn. When selecting your specials, the third one you pick is actually the one you're immune to. NPCs do this as well, giving a rock paper scissors dynamic to the game.
First time I played I wasn't aware that you had to equip the abilities, so I was actually doing this challenge thinking that's how I was supposed to play
I ended up doing this to myself completely by accident as a kid. I only had Sonic Battle on emulator, so I had no instruction booklet, and I was a dumb kid so I just never figured out how to actually give Emerl all of these moves I was earning. Every battle with him was a godawful chip damage fest and I was constantly like "why is this character so bad? what is the point here?" Glad to see I'm not alone in my suffering.
this was a super fun video (despite it reminding me how exhausting battle has been for a non-gamer like me) the fact that you could do it with zero upgrades is motivational haha!! and just really well-composed video as well. really enjoyable!
Funny story, when I played this as a kid I had no idea you could put moves on Emerl. I just thought he was an intentionally really weak character to add to the challenge. So I got all the way to the last fight in Shadow's story and got stuck there for years.
Yay, someone finally did this challenge! Before watching: during my childhood i was really bad in English, so i always skipped the part when it says "press R when on the map to change Emerl's skills". So, with that the furthest i could get was the middle of Amy's story, that part when you need to score 5/10 points with 2 opponents before they score the goal. And i somehow did 5 points, but stuck on 10, could not continue (i did not know how to save my progress) and gave up. Years later when i knew English much better i attempted it again and that's when i knew how i messed up in past. Turns out Amy's story was the hardest one and if i could beat it i probably could finish the game back then
Some notes for anyone that might want to play the game: The special attack that is not used becomes an defense, so, for example, if you don't use bombs, they won't be able to damage you in case the enemy uses, the blocked attack also fills the special bar The enemy ALWAYS puts it's defensive option on the special attack that killed it last round (if your last hit was a special, you can still do most damage with specials and then finish off with a normal for a chance for it NOT to happen) Knuckles is a really infuriating character to use, it is the only character that moves during his jabs, but, his ground power special is a really strong punch, albeit a slow one too You can get to the ground faster as rouge (or with the air movement for emerl) by pressing jump In the Emerl chapter, you can find a building that let's you input codes, those include a special sort of attack that is a character' combo, those count as specials, but bypass the guard an enemy could use (except if the finisher is a special)
Man your channel has grown a lot the past 2 years. I have been here since the shadow video and I can say that you have improved a lot and probably will continue to improve.
Funny thing about this video it reminds me of a very same situation I was in when I first played this game! I got an English copy of it before I learned how to speak English so I was skipping all the dialogue and just playing all the fights without any upgrades just like your challenge video here!!! 😂 it wasn’t until like halfway through the entire game when I accidentally pressed one of the shoulder buttons to activate the skill menu and that’s when I was like what the hell is this? I felt like I discovered a secret. 😂
This is awesome! I always hoped I would find something like this! Back then I never learned about customization until my second run, so for the first I actually beat the game with mint emerl 😂😂😂 I remember abusing the ground shots and air pows a lot, and how utterly try hard the battle against sonic and shadow was, not to mention final boss eggman. Great vid! Hope to see more of your channel! ❤
RU-vidr explaining the strats of beating fights for people to replicate Me seeing the title of the video “Nah see that’d mean that I can’t use Emerl’s version of Sonic’s special, so I’m not ever doing that”
Yes. Without even watching the video, I can tell you it's possible. On my first playthrough, I wasn't even aware of the upgrade system. I always dreaded playing as Emerl as a result. lol
Update on my progress through the video. Made it to the don't-get-hit challenge I was thinking about, and I wish I knew this strat that you came up with. Would have saved me a lot of time. What I did to complete it was some sort of juggle. I forget what move it is, but Emerl has a small spin-dash hop that goes forward, and I comboed it with the one that makes him hop back. So I just sorta...bounced around in the same spot for hours on end until it worked. My soul hurts just thinking about it.
I already knew this was possible for one reason & 1 reason only. I did when I was in kindergarden. To be exact, I started in kindergarden & beat it before finishing grade school. Believe it or not, that’s up to you. The thing is, I didn’t know how to read back then (obviously), so I never knew that Emerl could be upgraded. It took little me multiple years, but well, that was my original experience with my first Sonic game. And after u actually learned that Emerl can be customized, I played it all over again using moves that I never noticed I got🤣😅 He’s been my favorite fictional character ever since~ So yeah, I mainly was excited to see someone else do this as well. And I gotta say, it was fun to watch. While I didn’t think of many of the tricks you showed, juggling with ground trap and air power is a core memory of mine. Amazing job at beating the game like this and thanks for resurfacing such precious memories of mine ⭐️
Ah, I did this as a child because I didn't know you could upgrade Emerl. The Sonic Shadow fight was the true hardest because I used a mixture of the bomb juggle, which I figured out as a kid, and using the other abilitys to jump onto a thin wall. I would switch between running away and fighting, allowing myself to die after killing at least both of them once. Then when spawned in, I would jump on an elevated area as they ran to me. I was stuck on this for so long that I actually learned how to read English by the time I had completed it. When I got to the final boss I could read now, so up to them I had no idea what was happening because I couldn't read so I just went everywhere each time trying to figure out where to go. Finishing the game when I was about, 9. I managed to beat Eggman by juggling his rouge falling too. It wasn't till I was 15 that I came back to this game and I made Emerl strong and beat it properly.
I love this game❤ Unknown to most sonic fans but known for their sprites work. Underrated game with its own unique fighting style being 2D 3D beat them up mixed game. I have played and still play it having about 88% cards mostly missing the colors cards special strengths cards support cards and the ultimate emerl cards. I mostly played it with my bro and later starting playing story mode i beat in week as i believe. Playing the storymode made me better player and making a somewhat pro I kinda skipped the dialogue text reading the thing said on the texts later i found about editing emerl moveset by pressing the R button on the overworld while pressing/holding the B button makes you move faster in the overworld while playing either tails or rouge chapter having only like 70-80 in skills out of 500 making moveset limited only using the standard combo start the B button and movement cards which were more than special attack/ R button later made my own emerl. Reaching the max skill points 500/500 skill points in cream chapter giving me the emerl i that loved using❤. Despite the game flaws from broken balance/jank and heavy grinding in early game not re-released in modern console as of currently time and no esport about like other competitive games i hope it becomes more popular.🙂
Goddamn, Reminds me of when my dumbass child self couldn't figure out how upgrades worked, so I slogged through this shit thinking Emerl was _supposed_ to suck. Imagine my surprise and frustration when he's zip-zopping around me and zoopity-bopping me into the floor over and over again in the last fight. Couldn't beat him worth shit. Glad to know my dumbassery is so absurd that someone made a challenge out of it. Nice video, btw.
I beat the entire game as a child without upgrading Emerl, as the game told me to press L to do it, but it would only tell me in dialogue menus where L wouldn't do anything. I ended up thinking I had to unlock it after beating the game. That made certain parts of the game like Rouge's or Cream's much more difficult than it had to be. However, I eventually figured it out.
The reason they block some specials automaticly is cuz when you select what special you want grounded and aerial, the third is set to auto guard, wich also mean if the oponent uses that as its insta kill, you get the instakill instead I can see colors and stances be legal with this, since they are MOSTLY cosmetic, but in the case of gamma's stance, it gives you the self destruct on death
I believe for the Rouge fight in Amy's chapter, the fight is lost only if you KO her with a full Special Meter, causing a 1-hit KO. The game does detect this and fades out to the retry cutscene if you do that. Also I see someone else enjoys doing the Shadow Style dance at 30:44.
Funny story: when I first played Sonic Battle (with my brother), we had no idea how to upgrade/ change Emerl's stuff for, like, 80% of the game. So we really were playing this game like this lmao.
When I first played the game on the gba, didn't know about the skills or rather I didn't use any upgrades due to this. It was hell, needing luck for the def to match up the opponents, long periods of healing, and special or shot is your friend. Hardest challenge was cream story, shadow story, eggman, and possibly Rouge... story or time reasons
I already knew the answer to this was yes because I was a dumb kid that didn't know I could upgrade Emerl at all 😅Avoiding Rouge was easily the hardest part for me.
When I played this the first time as a kid, I didn't even know you could equip skills. So although I know the answer to the title already, I'm still gonna watch because I wanna see how it feels to someone else.
As a dumb child I never made it past episode sonic tutorial. When I picked it back up and actually understood how to play the game in 2013 I can say this game is great.
16:23 This actually has to do with a mechanic that isn't as obvious as the Ground and Aerial specials. The third (basically the unused) option will be a guaranteed Protect against that specific special attack. EDIT: Guess while I'm here, this is basically my first playthrough of Sonic Battle funnily enough.
Something similar happened to me when I played this game when I young. My L and R didn't work on my GBA SP, so I was doing this challenge more or less as a kid. I do not know how I beat it as a kid.
So as a kid I did not know you could press the shoulder buttons to cycle through the different tabs in Emeral's custom menu So the only moves I ever customized where the basic movement mods and such Side note: I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not or if you're even aware but There is one additional mechanic in the Special move select menu. When you select a ground move and an areal move, whichever category you did NOT select will become an auto block move for both you and the CPU. So if you select the Shot as your ground move and the Pow as you air move, the Trap will be set as an auto block meaning any Trap moves the opponent uses will automatically blocked. This is why sometimes enemies would just always block certain special moves at certain points no matter what. As an addition to this mechanic, if an enemy where to try and hit you with a powered up Special attack that would one shot you, your power meter will immediately max out if that one shot Special attack gets auto blocked. There is some interesting counter play with this mechanic as if you know which moves your opponent have when you die, you can counter them by selecting your load out in a way to give you a slight upper hand.
Oh Im surprised you didnt mention how busted Cream's heal is. Knuckles is notable because he charges the insta kill gauge super quick while Gamma us notable for recovering HP super quick. Cream is notable for recovering *both* super quick. You can basically fully heal while the enemy respawns in any 1v1 and also get a free insta kill
