Thanks to breakthroughs in stem cell technology, researchers can now grow miniature versions of organs in laboratories. Such mini-organs are called organoids, and they resemble human organs in structure and function. This makes them a valuable research model to study how our bodies grow, what drives different diseases, and to test new therapeutics. In this “Short Question”, Dr. Wouter Derks from the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) at TUD Dresden University of Technology takes you through the process of creating organoids, using the example of a mini-heart. Dr. Derks shares why these tiny organs have caused a revolution among scientists and quickly became a valuable tool in biologists’ sheds.
