Wow! Hammer editor... what a throwback. For only 1 day, a lot of these maps turned out really awesome!

Hey, Thanks so much! I got into Quake pretty late but there's something about its simple, no nonsense design that makes it still awesome today.

@@studioroberts Yes it's an amazing game. I got it when it came out as a kid and loved it. The level design is actually pretty intricate.

Do you think if I learn trenchbroom will this help me improve my hammer editing skills?

Hey I am a Quake mapper that I started on JACK (a hammer variant) honestly Trenchbroom workflow is a bit different than Hammer, basically you cant interact with anything on the 3D screen and doing geometry seems like a chore... Trenchbroom is better suited in this aspect... Hammer works for Source and goldsrc games... But Hammer 2 is steps ahead and old source games can handle Hammer++ that is basically trenchbroom... I recommend you learn Trenchbroom and stick with it for any non related Valve game... For Valve games depending search for JACK or Hammer++

Prior to it being acquired by Valve, Hammer was known as Worldcraft. I used Worldcraft for years to make Quake levels, long before Trenchbroom ever existed. I've been learning how to make to work with Trenchbroom, but I have to say that the workflow of Worldcraft is much more familiar to me. I find that with Worldcraft, it's much easier to do precision alignments of textures. The interfaces of both programs are different. Trenchbroom largely uses modifier keys to quickly worth with brushes, whereas with Worldcraft, you have to select a different tool to do different operations. It can seem a bit clunky at times. Although for me, Trenchbroom can sometimes feel a bit ambiguous (I admit that I'm still learning the program, so I probably need to read through the documentation again). If you're starting out, I would probably focus on learning Trenchbroom. It easily integrates with the features of modern sourceports, such as colored lighting and skyboxes. I also like how you can set up different profiles for compiling the levels.

That's a generally good practice I think. Sometimes I question myself why am I returning to Hammer through the years if nobody's gonna play these maps? The answer is its a good practice to use existing games and their mechanics instead of creating something from the scratch and have no idea whether the thing's gonna work or not. Carry on.

This is honestly probably one of the greatest ways to quickly build up your level design skills very quickly: focusing on smaller, easily digestible pieces that you're forced to craft at a consistently brisk pace. Keep going with this and you'll find yourself moving up real fast.👍

This is a really great video and you're making me feel a lot more interested in Quake Mapping again. I've been struggling with being consistent because I tend to be very.. ambitious? I tell myself that it'll be a small and then end up making it complex. I always wonder how people come up with the layouts for even the more mediocre maps. I'm definitely struggling a bit whenever I try to plan out what my map will be like beyond aesthetics and what the goals are ^^

Making a new level every day will teach you the tools, the process, and the technical skills, but it won't teach you how to make great levels. It won't teach you the craft. You'll only learn how to make great levels by spending your time trying to make great levels, and there's no way you're going to achieve that in a day. Even with an engine as simple as Doom, and even if you spent every waking hour of that day doing it. I'm no great level designer myself, but its the same with any art form. The only way you learn how to make great art is by trying to make great art, analysing other great art, and developing your own taste, identity, style, and sensibilities. That's not something you can rush. If you're trying to learn how to make great things, you might even hinder your progress because you'll practice rushing and thoughtlessness. There's something to be said for getting out of your own way, and learning how to create thoughtlessly (I mean that literally btw, as in creating without thinking because you don't have time to put too much thought into anything) might help with that. But you have to sit down occasionally and think about what you're trying to do, you have to allow yourself time to be creative. Creativity isn't something you can force, productivity is, but those are two different things. The vast majority of the time creative solutions to problems don't come until you purposefully take your foot off the accelerator and allow your subconscious to take over. There's a balance to had between productivity and creativity too obviously. Creativity won't come until you start, and you won't start until you try to force productivity. I guess what I'm saying is that while this sort of practice can be useful for a bunch of different reasons, none of those reasons are the reasons you did this (as far as I am able to tell based on this video anyway). Obviously learning level design by making levels is a good approach (its the only approach really lol), I just don't think the extreme time constraint is very helpful, I think the better approach would be to make a series of tiered projects of increasing complexity and difficulty.

I love mapping for various retro fps games, am still learning trenchbroom and its been fun I don't think I'm the the kind of person though to make a map everyday, I'm not the speedmapper type, especially with how packed my days are full of stuff to do

Hell yeah! As someone who grew up toying with the early quake maps (and knows better how to make a SCENE in Unity / Unreal engine - it be a level only if it's for an existing game) I find an exercise like this interesting. The sick irony is that despite having tons of experience in Doom and Quake engine games, not doing enough for the other stuff limits my prospects to get a level design JOB but I map for stuff I like! But yes keep it up, for sure. If u have any released maps for those sorts of games I'm down to give them a whirl!

cool video to watch as another aspiring mapper and game maker. i think making quake 1 maps is a super fun way for anyone to learn game design, the pieces are simple enough to just throw in a level and have *something* worth playing, but as you get better and better the possibilities expand and you can kinda make anything

Even comparing trechbroom to modern BSP tools in UE is night and day. It looks easy to import trenchbroom content to unity and UE now so I would be sorely tempted to use it there.
@studioroberts
@studioroberts 6 месяцев назад
Agreed! UE5's modeling tools seemed pretty powerful but I found them very slow and unintuitive to use. I've done some experiments with exporting.obj from Trenchbroom to Unity and it worked quite well for what I was doing. Thanks for checking out the video by the way!

RU-vid reccomending this to the right audience for sure, great video! I'm subscribing right now, also great effort because I wouldn't guess the maps were one day projects. Idea: After you tire of one map a day, pick your favorite concept and expand on it and refine it into a full polish level

I wish I knew anything about coding so that I could actually understand how to get more out of the tools that I use. I'm great at creating levels, environments, and have no problem putting my writing, drawing, and musician skills to use. But I find all the technical stuff way harder because my adhd just doesnt mix well with coding... I have to read the same things over and over an over again constantly, it's exhausting. I definitely see an improvement over this video though! It's a pretty common practice in art to practice making quick sketches as much as possible every day. I remember it being the thing that made the most difference in such a short period of time when it came to my artwork. This is a really great idea!

3D levels and editors do are hard a lot, thats why i stick to making doom maps and using simple Doom Builder and its more new variants like Ultimate Doom Builder, errors occur less but you cant make room over room unless you do it for a port like GzDoom and make a map in Gzdoom (UDMF) format
