Most nail polishes are just hot solvent-based paints or lacquer paints. I think it would be a good idea to thin the paints using Mr Hobby levelling thinner before putting them in the water. It has an anti-drying agent along with the methyl-acetate thinner. The slower drying time allows the paint to level out on whatever you spray it on (like nails or model kits.) You'd probably end up with fewer globs in the end. Also, you could load this thinner in an airbrush and spray in on the final product if you see globs of paint to give them a chance to level out a little more, but do it sparingly so the paint doesn't quite run. Don't think the paint too too much though. I would start with a ratio of 1:1 paint to thinner. For airbrushing hot solvents, you usually add twice as much thinner as paint. The thinner can corrode or etch ABS if you use too much. A stronger thinner like turpentine would melt the plastic outright. Spraying a layer of clear solvent before the colored paints would be good too since it would serve as a final topcoat. You might also spray the keys with a primer like Mr. Surfacer before dipping as well.
@anthonyalbanese1993

Instead of Alcohol - I think a better idea would have been to try adding acetone to the water. I suspect that might be why the "magic bin" produced better results over time, the higher and higher acetone content in the water allowed the nail polish to thin more. Alcohol has very little effect on solvent based paints - it's why nail polish remover is made of acetone, you need a solvent :)
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 8 месяцев назад
Oooh neat, we'll have to try that next time as a variable!
@albertlwj
@albertlwj 8 месяцев назад
nail polish does not contain acetone. putting acetone in the water would just make the nail polish dissolve into the water. You need a film of "dye" on the surface of the water for water marbling, you don't need a tub of colored liquid. the problem is the layer of "lacquer" that some nail polishes contain, that protects the polished nail from being scratched. Some brands have it, some brands don't, or use it in smaller concentrations. The first blue pour very definitely contained a very high concentration of it. So it was a matter of which brand works and which brand doesn't.
@tilicia
@tilicia 8 месяцев назад
I wonder if laying down spray paint first to “prime the pot” would waste less nail polish and still have a cool effect?
@anthonyalbanese1993
@anthonyalbanese1993 8 месяцев назад
@@albertlwj to be fair I didn't say it contains acetone, I said nail polish is solvent based (which it is, "Conventional nail polish consists of a polymer, most commonly nitrocellulose, dissolved in a solvent, usually ethyl acetate or butyl acetate. When it is applied the solvent evaporates, leaving the polymer to form a film on the nail.") - so a solvent is used to thin or dissolve it. I do agree with your thoughts process though, it makes sense. Was mostly just sharing that alcohol probably didn't do the intended effects and why :) I haven't personally tried this, mind you, but I can say at the very least acetone would thin the paints. I agree with others in the comments though, that spraypaint method seems to be a lot more common and reliable!

Some tricks you might use, that are common when water marbling nails: Prepping the keys with a coat of nailpolish, usually one uses the brightest color used in the marbling, with iridescents a really dark one works better to make the pigments really pop. Once dipped, really carefully use a q-tip or a piece of tissue paper to soak up the water drops, do not touch the polish though, it helps the polish dry properly. If there is a waterbubble under the polish, use a thin needle to pop the bubble and soak the water up as before, the polish should lay flat or can be gently pressed down before putting on a clear coat. Use a clear coat on top, or some other clear varnish etc. The Polish layer is really thin and easily visibly scratched.

When I watermable my nails, I spread the first colour out over the surface of the water before doing the next drop of colour (idk if that makes sense lol) it enables the next drops to spread thinly enough that it doesn’t show the ‘water’ blobs, as they’re most likely just too-thick polish in most cases.

I've only ever water marbled paper, but it is fun! I'd like to see you try something other than nailpolish, which tends to dry really fast. I remember, the first time I tried water marbling, the only paint I had at the time was intended for glass painting. It took forever to dry, which was probably a positive while dipping, but a pain in the butt waiting for them to dry. Any non-watersoluble paint could potentially work, I think nailpolish dries too fast and is too thick to be ideal. You can also use watersoluble paints, if you use something other than water for the bath. The keyboard is amazing, despite everything. I kinda want to try this, too.

The next time you want to do anything that's dipping like that it works best if you put in almost an entire bottle of clear nail polish first. The clear nail polish puts the film on top of the water and then your colors will stay closer to where you want them. It also stops the colors from spreading out quite so far
@early2exit
@early2exit 8 месяцев назад
You WANT the color to spread out. Thats why the ones where it didnt, failed. The paint is too thick in the areas the color doesnt spread. Thats where the big globs of paint come from.
@tracymclaughlinholmes677
@tracymclaughlinholmes677 8 месяцев назад
@@early2exit it does spread. When you're using a large bucket you don't use enough nail polish and it's becoming to diluted. They also were looking to use a toothpick to create a design. When you do that you don't want the nail polish to spread really far or your toothpick isn't going to do anything in creating a design. Clear nail polish puts the coating on top of the water allowing you to put the colors where you want and then mix them about with the toothpick as you desire.

Ooh I have 3 of the 4 Sally Hansen polishes myself (not the pearl one) and I really like the two colour therapy ones but the gel one is way too sheer for my liking which is really unfortunate as its such a cool shifting colour! I'm actually interested in whether the gel one would work for water marbling because its so sheer. I'm a bit of a nail polish nerd so always get excited when someone uses one that I already have in my collection 😂
@QuestionReason
@QuestionReason 8 месяцев назад
Yeah! So in my experience, the very sheer polishes are built to go on top of another color and add a shimmer, or if iridescent, a pop of color. Try some of your sheer polishes on black and white tests. Iridescent polishes will turn out differently on different colors too. On white it may be pinks and yellows, on black it may be greens and reds. But on green? Who knows! I just know they are the glitter in my pocket, I love it. Have a good time!

Hmm. The "stuff" in nail polish is soluble in acetone, right, so wouldn't you want a non-polar liquid (which evaporates faster than water)? Maybe...hexane or gasoline? What could possibly go wrong? Also, the lack of witch hats is definitely causing a problem.
@nocturnalizzie
@nocturnalizzie 8 месяцев назад
Nail polish enthusiast and occasional watermarble witch here! Whether a polish is shimmery or creme ("matte") doesn't really indicate whether or not it will spread well in the water. It seems to be more based on the overall formulation of the polish. But from my experience, you generally don't want to use ones that claim to dry quickly (like the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri ones you have) since the polish is already going to be drying somewhat quickly on the water's surface. I'm told it's ideal to use room-temperature distilled water for marbling, though I haven't really noticed a difference between my (just-shy-of-toxic) tap water and distilled. When I dip my nail in the water, I usually hold it under the surface for a bit while I use a q-tip to get all the extra polish out of the way to make sure no extra color clings onto the design while I get my finger out. And sometimes when I get the bubbles of failure, I just kinda paint some polish on there and try to make it look organic. I can confirm that "fun aside from all the infuriation" is about how I expect watermarble to go every time. 😛This project turned out so well!! 😍 Also, you know you're too into nail polish when you can *recognize* Sinful Colors Let's Talk (the shimmery purple) and Sally Hansen My Ca-banana (yellow creme). 😅 Maybe I'll try to watermarble my nails with a similar look at some point and tag y'all on IG if it works!

11:35 no, your issue is that the paints react with the water upon contact to form a film, but you keep stirring up this film in a vain attempt to spread out the paint. if you want the paint spread out, then you have to apply it to the water's surface where you want it. the tearing film effect is useful in securing the paint to the object. understanding this concept will allow you to water paint individual keys on the entire keyboard, as you inaccurately alluded to in the intro, @0:40.
