Is It Really A Massey Harris 44 Special Plus Unloading And A Smokey Cold Start

Today's video involves several things....first a bit of history, secondly a bit about load securement for my own use, third... we list some of but not all of the differences between the 44 Special and a normal 44, fourth... a bit of input from the Missus as the tractor is unbuckled and unloaded and fifth... a little talk about valve guides and oil burning.
Now I am not a person that claims to know everything about anything except getting in hot water with the Missus. THAT is one thing I can write a book or three about. But I DO know a mattering of facts concerning my favorite brand (MasseyHarris)...but admittedly if you take that bit of information to the corner burger stand, it'll still cost full amount for a cup of coffee. The only people interested in the information about Masseys contained in the confines of the gray matter within my thickened cranium's cavity are already in command of the majority of the same information !! Everyone else doesn't really care or they are John Deere owners.....jus' sayin'.
Not throwing shade guys....we love all tractors...its just that red ones are better !!
There certainly are more differences than came to mind while walking around the old machine, but for some reason, these are just the main things that managed to make it through the jumbled maze of thoughts. The Missus manages to surprise me with a couple unexpected questions that I really did not have an answer for...like....do they still make a 'row crop' tractor like these...?? For the record, the term has morphed into something different than what it was when I was a youngster bouncing across the fields on the little 101 Junior or pulling silage wagons with one of our old 44's in road gear down the road to the silage blower. Back then we called all narrow front ends a 'row crop' or 'tricycle' and wide front ends were just called 'standard' tread. Of course that probably varied from locality to locality and your terminology might have been different. We never even saw a single front wheel machine...ever !!
Watching the video you may notice a couple apparent problems not introduced. They actually were, but in the interest of keeping the video as short as possible I edited a tremendous amount out....And admittedly it is still too darn long. So for that I don't apologize but I DID shorten it a good bit. Those edited portions will be covered in future videos as this machine is brought back up to snuff and ready to work. #Masseyharris, #coldstart, #tractor

Well, I really DID go looking for a set of tires...its not my fault that this turned into a pretty good tractor. THAT's my story and I'm sticking to it. (-:] She was fooled a little by the improper decal. I have a 30 that a guy stuck a 333 decal on. I guess that adds horsepower....LOL. Thanks for watching.

"Getting in hot water with the missus"? Nah, say it isn't so Wendell 😂 I'll remember the line, "I'm going to look at a couple of tractor tires" and not bother to tell her they are still on the tractor! That's a good one! As always, the missus commentary is stellar.

A lot of good information about the tractor and the differences. I personally never saw a Massey-Harris around this area when I was growing up. This area was dominated by JD, Farmall and AC tractors with a few Fords here and there. The Missus did not disappoint!!! Well, you did find 4 good tires! The explanation of the chains makes sense to me. Yeah, those chains will hold a heck of a lot more that that tractor weighs and if it does reduce their ratings by twisting them I bet it's well above any force that tractor would put on them. I have all straps instead of chains. I don't really trust them as much as chains but I use straps rated a heck of a lot higher than I really need just to make me feel better. I always enjoy the videos you put out explaining things on equipment or tractors I am unfamiliar with. 👍👍👍
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 5 месяцев назад
I'll use straps on the smaller Kubotas, but 99% of the time its chains for me. You'll find the double twist will place both attachment points under tension. If you're not careful, a single twist can leave the other side slightly loose when bound down. I'm glad you enjoyed the Missus and her thoughts....but she stumped me with the simple question of 'do they still make row crops'..?? Of course she's meaning the narrow fronts and I really was stumped. I just don't know...LOL

Dad bought a new 44 Special from the MH dealer. At the time it was the biggest tractor on our state road. Ours was wide front with live power with no hydraulic or 3 pt and no power steering. It was the hardest starting tractor on the farm. Our local paper took a picture of my mother baling hay with a JD 24T baler with a thrower and published in a Saturday supplement when the baler was new.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 5 месяцев назад
Well Phil, it's my experience to note that when there's one that's a hard starter there's a reason for it. We had one year ago with the same issue. Had a devil of a time figuring it out but it turned out to be a hairline crack in the distributor cap. From then on, about two revolutions of the crank hot or cold and it was up and running. Not saying that was your dad's issue, but it had to be something easily overlooked. Good story...thank you for adding the input !!

What a Lovely running and sounding 44! You might want to think about a side car for the Missus and give her a few Squeezez to for not beating you on camera, eh? The start up really helped with that I believe. So you most likely have at least 3-5 tractors now right? Well tractors are like good hand tools, you never have enough! And that’s all I have to say about that except I’ll be Drippin, Tippin and Sippin your way inna morning with mug raised high in celebration of a new 44 and no casts or bandages! Massey was made in Ontario. Woodstock I believe. Did have parts in Waterloo Ontario. I did have a 1947 Pony. It was my first tractor. With 11.6 hp it could push a lot of snow. Chains on the rears. Nice find. To bad it is not a special. Did you know that Massey made a bulldozer ?

Yes, I've seen the one with the 44 powerplant. I wasn't sure it was actually a MH or if it was created by a talented mechanic though. I have an old Pony as well. It's pretty nice, but needs a total engine rebuild. That Pony has the same 62 cubic inch motor that's in the little Allis Chalmers G. They don't interchange though because the mounting castings are different. But I think the internals are all the same though.

Interesting on twisting of the chain. Does that make it harder to get tension on the end opposite of the chain binder? I'll have to experiment myself to get a full understanding of the dynamics involved. Oh, that's not a Massey Harris, at the 8:30 mark when you're on the right side of the tractor talking about the clutch, the hood decal says, "MASSEY RIS"....LOL Interesting convo you had with the wife, I did hear that she wanted you to buy a newer tractor, one made since 2000. I don't know if I mentioned this, but I picked up a 1953 Ford Jubilee with a Davis 100 loader towards the end of December. Found it on marketplace near Pontiac, Illinois. Runs good, but I wish the bucket was a bit smaller, a lot of weight on that front end and without power steering, it's interesting to steer this tractor. No rear weights, so for the time being I'm using a Ford reversible scoop with some weights in it for ballast. I put the two John Deere M rear weights in it plus some suitcase weights. I wish the John Deere weights would fit the rear rims on this Ford, but I think it would need some kind of space adapter to get them on the rims. Here is a video of the tractor that the seller sent me: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5Tig1-qBfyI.htmlsi=v-i9fSLh8N9EyEtZ I still have those Ford 2000 hood decals here someplace.

I don't recall you telling me about the Jubilee. Watching the video I agree, that bucket is a bit large, but it'd be good sliding snow off I bet. One of these days I'll get down that way to stop in and look at your stable. The 2000 is still running good too, but a new set of decals might make it run a bit better !! LOL I drilled my own holes in a pair of weights for a tractor back a few years. It's only cast and it drilled real easy. I used 3/4'' all thread and lock nuts to mount them. You'd be in hog heaven to find a set of pie weights for the Jubilee. Have a great day...we got three inches last night. My daughter was in St Gen and she said it hit harder and quicker down south. Did you get more than a dusting like we got ? I make the double twist for the purpose of getting the slack out of the opposite side. When you pull the chain back to the binding side, you'll see its easy to ensure tension is added to the opposite side. If you do it incorrectly, you can actually leave a bit of slack in that side which will loosen the load as you drive. It's very easy to to it correctly.

@@tractorman4461 We got maybe 2 inches, but we got some sleet and some rain mixed in. What was interesting was we got a lot of thunder and some lightening. Loud thunder, at that. My stable is always changing it seems. Now just 5 Ford tractors, I sold the John Deere L to some young guy (actually it was his wife who wanted one). I sold the '47 Cub to some guy in Fredricktown, and I sold or traded the other Farmalls. I need to clean the carbs on the '44 Ford 2N and the '57 Ford 640. The JD wheel weights are about 150 lbs each and will help load up the rear to offset that big bucket on the loader. I don't want to load the tires and I'm glad that they're not loaded now.

@@316jd140 I prefer weights instead of liquid ballast too. Nice set of Fords you got. We were in town..AMVETS fish fry....and on the way home our daughter called to tell us about the thunder and lightning. We couldn't hear it in the car with the tires crunching in the snow though. W had sleet and rain mixed in too, but before the snow.

Heck I bought an Oliver 77 for $200 with really good rear rubber and cast wheels. I got it running, smokes bad too. But I swapped the rears with the rears on the much better 77 that I use all the time here.

Our '52 44 Standard was pumping oil like that when we got it second hand, figured it could use a set of rings at some point. That was over 60 years ago. It's still pumping oil, but still starts and gets used every year. Those old Massey 44's are rock solid!

Good story !! You're right, they're bulletproof. They are notorious for a quick easy start if they are anywhere close to being able to run....usually. We had one that was a bit problematic years ago. @@tractorman4461 We typically put a 12v battery into ours to whip it over fast then once it starts switch it back to the 6V. @@Motodoo Yes, my brother has our old Model 25 but the one you are remembering was us trying to plow with a 1927 MH 3 bottom disc plow with a 1937 MH Challenger. Very similar to the 25, except row crop, narrow front, same integral U-tube frame. I've seen guys switch a 6v resistor out of the circuit to give 12v while starting, then switch them back into the circuit to run on. One guy just added a switch on the dash and another just added a toggle off the side of the coil. Kept the 12v battery in with alternator conversion. Of course this isn't for the guys that want it to appear original.
@Motodoo

I’m not too fussed about things appearing original, although I get the argument the show guys make about wanting them to look the way they did when they rolled of the production line. I did a 12v conversion on my old moline U, but haven’t got around to doing the old 44 yet. Perhaps this summer but the thing is I know once I start on that I’ll just wind up doing an overhaul on the engine. If it works why fix it right haha.
