A quick visit to the Much Older Brother's shop today to fire up a freshly rebuilt Ford 8n is the subject of the video. It's a total rebuild...new sleeves, pistons, rings, valves, valve springs, rod and main bearings, oil pump, water pump, distributor and complete gasket set. One thing that was NOT done, was the carburetor. It's still in the original condition it was in before the motor was torn down for rebuild. The engine ran, but when I had it, it burned about the same amount of oil as would literally drip out of the exhaust pipe while running. It was weak enough that it would not pull itself in road gear. But hey, it's got new tires all around !!
Once assembled and reinstalled in the tractor, he asked if I'd like to do a first start video on it and of course you know the answer was heck yeah !! So today we did what we did and between the two of us commanded enough luck to get one more back up and on line. Well, I left before the fine tuning...but that's ok, the hard part got done before I hit the door. Actually the hard part was done over the course of the winter in his warm basement. With no source of heat in his shed, he likes to do a lot of this kind of work in the dead of winter right next to his wood furnace in the basement, where it's so warm the hardening of his old arteries refuse to restrict the blood flow. Yeah, its' THAT warm and you gotta remember, he IS my Much Older Brother!!
Anyway he did almost all the work to get it ready...well, I brought over the set of angled grinding wheels and power head and ground (lightly) the valve seats...but he did the rest of the engine rebuild and re-installation unassisted. I did have to take a few thousandths off one of the valve stems for some reason or other...but that's another story.
He assembled this one at perfect TDC on #1 and so we are starting it just a little in the retarded position for firing. That's for two reasons. 1) The new engine is going to be tight and we only have a 6v system and 2) It'll spin a little easier while firing at slightly less compression, 4* retarded from actual timing setpoint. You can't get away with this on a lot of engines, but these little low compression Fords are very forgiving...and its ONLY 4*. We aren't talking a high compression diesel engine ya know. And of course as always...this is my opinion and others may argue a different point. But that's what makes the world go round. The end result is we all get 'em going no matter which opinion we subscribe to. #ford, #tractor, #firststart
