These 1lb propane cylinders are a single use hazardous item. It's estimated that more than 40 million end up in our landfills each year.
PLEASE do not toss these in your trash. Take them to Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in your area when you're done with them.
So what can you do? In this video I show you how you can easily refill these with an $8 attachment as well as other safer, more sustainable options.

I love my MSR whisperlite, but I thought I would give one of these dual fuel stoves a try. I added that part to my amazon cart then I watched your video. Great! I do not like the idea of refilling those colemans, but that flame king 1# cans are a great option, and work out to be only slightly more expensive than the 5# tank... I'm gonna kinda measure the efficiency of this new propane stove over my whisperlite and take it from there. Thanks for the video. Well done.

they tell you a bunch of bs on cans , so if you did refill a propane bottle , how would they ever know ? well they wouldn't

They probably use a special gas design just for their cams. And if you use a different propane, they can probably do a chemical test to see if it was their propane or if it was refilled By using a different Formula of gas that is not typically put in this. but I honestly think this is just a bunch of bullshit to get you to keep complying to buying new cans so they don't lose money.

I ordered the Ignik, it’s just a perfect size for us for car camping. I was a sucker for good design..you travel with the 20lber?

Coleman had to retire it's white gas line years ago which they basically exclusively sold and switch to propane which is widely available. How to replace the lost revenue? Make a proprietary canister with a proprietary connector that falls under single use laws in the US by skimping out on a high pressure bleed off/shutoff valve and pushing the 500k fine on their labels to try to give people into complying. Truth is, these canisters can survive a 9mm round while full of propane and are a waste to throw away. Honestly anti-trust and environmental legislation should have stopped Coleman from making these canisters single use decades ago.
@BrandoDrum
@BrandoDrum Год назад
Furthermore, Coleman one lb canisters come from the factory at nearly 300 psi, a regular reusable propane canister is only up to 200 psi. Theres NO Way to overfill a Coleman canister using a standard refillable propane tank. You'll have at least 100 psi of buffer. The only risk is the valve on the canister wearing our over time but frankly a 300 psi valve should be quite robust
@BrandoDrum
@BrandoDrum Год назад
All that being said, propane should be taken seriously so get an accurate scale and follow best practices to refill the canister to the recommended weight. I do that and I have canisters that have lasted years with at least 3 refills

Thanks for the info. I've refilled mine several times and have never had an issue, but to be "legal" I'll be switching to a refillable. Personally, I think the companies that make these green cans should deal with the waste, not the parks.

The ignik is stupid expensive. 5lb flame king retails for $50 online at Costco. The only thing i don't like about this tank is the safety feature, which may be on new tanks. You have to turn it on slowly, or else you trip a safety switch which will limit the flow rate until you turn everything off, wait five minutes, and then try again. It's something you have to get the feel for, and once you know the procedure, I'm sure it'll be less of a nuisance, but it can be bothersome.
@Hovander
@Hovander 5 месяцев назад
The safety device is in the big green or black knob that attaches to the tank. Just remove that to eliminate the pressure and you can start over -- not wait 5 minutes or more.

You can always overfill gas canisters, whether they are refillable or single-use. This is determined by the principles of gas physics, and is not dependent on the size or material of the tank. Propane, regardless of its storage tank, turns into a liquid under a specific pressure and evaporates above a certain pressure threshold. Higher temperatures speed up evaporation, leading to increased pressure inside the tank, which should be relieved through a valve to prevent the tank from bursting. This is also why it's important to keep all propane tanks upright, so that the release valve expels gas rather than liquid propane. The key factors here are tank design and the specifications of the release valve, which determine the pressure capacity of the tank. There needs to be a minimum pressure within the tank to keep the propane in its liquid state. Otherwise, it will turn into a gaseous form. If an undersized or malfunctioning pressure valve is triggered, it will release the gas, leading to further evaporation. Eventually, your tank will be empty soon and the area around it will be filled with propane gas. As I mentioned, it all comes down to the intended use, safety considerations, and design. It's crucial not to disregard safety recommendations of manufacturing companies. I believe Coleman's recommendations are likely a combination of typical profit motives, adherence to safety standards, and a measure to protect themselves from legal liabilities. Just imagine a car full of children on vacation with only one refilled bottle, which starts to leak while driving in the left lane on a highway, with all the electronic and electrical systems in use. Avoid refilling single-use tanks if possible, or at least opt for higher-quality brands than Coleman. I saw that some people do not recommend refilling Coleman's single-use more than 10-15 times!!! There are better single-use tanks available, though they may be half the price of Flame King refillable bottles. But even those should not be refilled more than 25-30 times depending on brand and tank conditions. It is absolutely imperative NOT to transport refilled single-use bottles from any manufacturer or leave them in use unattended. Safety should always come first.

I love how you highlight the part about transporting a refilled cylinder but not the lines above it that state that refilling a cylinder can result in an explosion. This video should not have been made. People these days have short attention spans and will skip around this slow paced video and miss parts where you brush off the warnings as technicalities and then do the dangerous thing anyway. People aren't going to do things as controlled as you and will only view the tutorial parts and end up injured, severely injured, or dead. I get the argument that you're showing people who might have just tried on their own if you hadn't made the video. But I am frustrated at your attitude towards the warnings and the potential consequences, just brushing them off as annoyances or an overabundance of caution. It's the equivalent of an eye roll to safety warnings. You should state that no one should ever risk their life to prevent a can from going to a landfill, but if they absolutely insist, here is the process thats fair likely to result in death... Idk. I don't mean to be a Karen about it. But my friend basically followed the same process and lost two fingers and got a laceration down to the skull from this process gone wrong. Its just a sore subject for me
