In the third volume of the Is It Silver series, we'll look at pieces like candle sticks and vases that are actually made of sterling silver, but that have "weighted" or "filled" bases. We'll destroy one piece in this video so you can see just how little silver there really is!

Excellent educational video. If you want to know silver, you need to know this information. Please keep the great productions coming. Old man stacker here.

Learned a lot here. Love the destructive demonstration of 10% sterling weight in that piece.

Isn't that crazy? 10% of its pre destruction weight!

No doubt you can find beautiful and HEAVY pieces of brass, nickel, copper, etc. But unless they are literally $1 or two, you just waste space in my opinion. And we're trying to focus on precious metals. The solid silver pieces are out there!

Hey, I am going to try to take over for my Father who's just not getting better. So, I have returned from Asia to help take care of him and help mom out. If you want to do a live show on scrape silver and I am going to be redoing Silver picture frames. I have a problem with the feeling in my hands but I can still do the metal work. Next time take a hammer hit it not so hard and you will just peal it back. We actually had a talk about how much silver and what companies were Thin and then the heavier. The weighted candle sticks are 1.4 to almost 2oz in scrap but some are even thinner. But I am going to try to get these picture frames back out to their owners once I redo the backing with new fabric and backing boards. I'm not going to do the pin cushions with ring holders hidden under the cushion. Those are to much work for me the picture frames are bigger and easier for me to work on lol. After a work related accident I have lost a lot of feeling in my hands and arms. But Dad was 1 of the Top in the Country in redoing the picture frames for Dealers especially on the East Coast. Thanks for these videos

I appreciate it, @robertbedulajr3226. Going to be deep into different directions for at least another month, maybe two. Hope your dad is better and that you get what you need from those pieces.

Excellent video, youtube sent me here and I'm glad it did! You just ran through a bunch of things I learned over the past couple years by trial and error.

Thanks! Glad you liked it. Your experience is always going to be a better teacher than a video. But I hope you continue to enjoy the series.

@@Dub-C_Coins Hah, maybe a better teacher, but certainly a lot more painful on the pocketbook (when shopping at dealers at least). And for me the pocketbook is why I can't really *do* coins. Shame there aren't .99 cent bins of silver coins laying around at thrift shops!

I have rampaging children interrupting me, but I have two questions/suggestions for the video series. One; Will you cover "Silver Soldered"? I find pieces with that label and the information online is all over the place as to what actual silver content is in there (if any?).

Good idea. I'll add it to the list.

I was at a antique Mall today and i was going to buy a 4 piece coffee set. The markings on it said 715-E silver over copper they wanted $25 for the set but didn't know howmuch silver it contained. In your opinion should I go back and pick it up?? I was just going to sell it for the silver but i could not find how much silver it was. 🇺🇲🦅⚖️

Over copper? Just means silver plated. Virtually no silver. In my opinion it's not even close to that value.

Second question; Will you delve into "world silver"/coin silver? I've been fortunate in my ~3 years of silver stacking (mostly flatware/hollowware/mixed/weighted, rarely coins), to have access to a pawn shop with an XRF machine to confirm silver content for me. All of my actual deals from dealers have been on strangely marked (european/african) or coin silver (unmarked). In truth my hobby now is learning to ID real silver with weird markings vs plate/nickel.

You're right: Coin Silver is an important and often overlooked alloy in this field. I actually addressed "coin silver" in the 2nd video in this series. But of course it means different things depending on where the piece was made. You'll find the reference to Coin Silver at about the 36:00 minute mark: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3kl8wsb7Hbc.html

@@Dub-C_Coins Excellent thank you, I might add that a lot of coin silver is completely unmarked as to the metal content. I have as of yet found a dozen coin silver examples that are simply marked with the maker, but they come up as 90% on the XRF machine. In all cases the markings that do exist are of a maker that worked only in silver (all early-mid 1800s american). It's been a particularly entertaining area for me to look in, and I bet theres a lot of it still out there to be found.
