because this was filmed in a retro style as an homage to 30s-40s Hollywood, it will literally never look dated or feel old, and the song is still being referenced in pop culture, with Beyoncé recently sampling it in her 'Queen's Remix' of 'Break My Soul'. Is it the best? I mean, it's up there fore sure, but I'd put a few others above it. Like a Prayer for the political importance, Erotica for the sheer daring, Express Yourself for the elegance and message of female empowerment, Bedtime Story for the artistry. But Vogue will probably go down as Madonna's biggest hit and her most enduring legacy.

I'm 10 years older than you, I think. I remember when Mtv played videos only. There was a time for the "World Premiere Video". They did it with the biggest singers. It was the first time you would see it. People would wait for 7p.m. Friday for any one of these videos to premiere. It was an event if you can imagine that. There was no RU-vid to leak videos on. Mtv made it almost magical. The video was awesome. Paid tribute to so many past actors and actresses of the Golden Era of Hollywood. When it debuted no one knew this was an underground gay dance style. That information came out later and when it did I didn't know what an underground gay dance scene was so that part didn't matter too much to me. I found it to be completely original and so precise in movement. It is one of her best videos. I wish people would make more videos like this now. Style and substance over trend!! Truly iconic! (What a cliche that is now, but it's true for this video and song!). Thank you Johnny for allowing me to contribute. I appreciate your honesty and fascination with cultural icons!

The song Vogue was produced by Shep Pettibone and recorded in December of 1989. The song was originally intended to be the b-side for Keep It Together, but Madonna recognized the song's brilliance and decided to release it afterwards, as a single. The video for Vogue was filmed in March of 1990 and released to MTV in April of 1990. Madonna's Blonde Ambition Tour began in April of 1990.

Madonna relished the vibrant night life of NYC of the late 70s and 80s and she frequented these dance and live music clubs. It was one of her gay artist friends who introduced her to the gay underground ball scene in Harlem where “vogueing” was the craze and had become an art form. This experience profoundly inspired her to record Vogue and the music video.

Not only this one, but also Express Yourself are, for me, top 1 (yes, with two videos!). Vogue came just before Blond Ambition Tour. For me, Madonna at the top of carrer, with all spotlights on her, show to the straight and conservative world how to make a masterpiece video. And, at that point, for us, have a Superstar showing to the world how that gay culture (an underground culture at that point) is surprising and capable of to do that kind of iconic video just gave us more power to move on and spread gay-pride culture to the world.

The scene towards the end with Madonna in a corset (seen from behind) is actually a reference to a photograph from 1939 called "Corset by Detolle for Mainbocher" by Horst P. Horst. If you want to find out what this song and its success meant to the Ballroom scene and their hope of finally being seen you should watch the second season of that amazing show "Pose".

apologies if it's been mentioned... on the surface, it is a catchy pop song ('scuse me, THE pop song!) but the lyrics go deep. it starts with '...everywhere you turn it's heartache...'-it is '89/90, people are dying of AIDS. she kept losing her closest friends, AND she was the loudest advocate of the gay and the positive communities way before it became 'fashionable'-the song is a tribute to the ballroom culture, to her gay friends and fans who had been there before she became MADONNA in block capitals, to drag, to hollywood (if a typo is deliberately made, is it still a typo?..), and it screams beauty and freedom. and as a born gay man, my absolute favourite moment of the video is when she turns towards the camera in the sheer top and the girls say 'HIYEEEEEE!!'. beauty and freedom. MTV (erm, mtv) wanted her to cut it. @madonna said 'f*ck I will.' (which is why she thought she could push 'Justify my Love' thru censorship. that time around it didn't work. ...and the video single on vhs was born. I'm sure she made more than the cost of renting the whole floor (or 2?) in that hotel in Paris where that video was shot...) No one will ever touch the heights M has. it's taken a solid 40 years for the world to realise, thank f*ck SHE IS HERE to bask in the glory and finally enjoy the well-deserved, if incredibly overdue recognition and appreciation.

Top ten. Has aged extremely well. Express Yourself is better but this is close second. Much of the video, including the end scene of Madonna's back in a corset was inspired by the photography of Horst P. Horst, who wholly disapproved of the video, lol, likely because he wasn't contacted prior to the filming.

this video was both groundbreaking and controversial. vogueing had been around for decades but, i think, it was in the 80's when it became more entrenched in ballrooms, which had been around for even far longer and have a rich history. it's unclear when vogueing came into being but i was acquainted with Willie Ninja, who created the House of Ninja, and who was credited in the 80's for cementing vogueing at that time. Madonna had approached him but he refused to work with her in favor of working with Malcolm McClaren who incorporated him and vogueing in his video, Deep in Vogueing, which came out before Madonna made vogueing mainstream. in any event, Madonna's vogueing video came out around the same time as Paris Is Burning, a documentary by Jenny Livingston. it was an interesting contrast in that Madonna's video elevated vogueing to a glamorous level whereas Jenny's documentary portrayed voguers as disenfranchised people from the underclass. Yet, both Madonna and Jenny generated praise and recognition for their works by "discovering" voguers who had been voguing for decades before and gained no public recognition or praise. so, on the one hand, both Madonna and Jenny brought to the public an awareness of vogueing but they also benefited from it in a way that came across to some as exploitative. for me, personally, i also feel a certain ick for the academics and social critics who criticized Madonna and Jenny because, in my opinion, where were they before Madonna and Jenny capitalized on vogueing? so, it feels to me like everyone took their turn to exploit vogueing for their own means. nevertheless, it's nice to see it finally recognized and appreciated.

there are so many great madonna videos. and they are great in different ways. for all of the issues around madonna, she was a really stunning artist in her own right. fearless. always taking the form forward. not afraid to collaborate with other talents. always had an eye on the bigger picture of what she was doing-as you reference with her bringing gay culture into the mainstream, the shout-out to old Hollywood and Hollywood glamour, etc. plus-her videos were always classy. top shelf. for all the crap madonna got about being a loose, sexual woman-her videos were always really classy affairs from top to bottom. "vogue" is definitely an example of madonna at her best. the song. the video. the look. all of it comes together in a really stunning way here. I agree about the shock of Fincher directing it. it doesn't really seem like his thing, and yet the detail, the lighting, the whole flow of the video is thrilling. something surprising when looking at fincher and his work, in terms of this video, is the way it views men in the video, it eats them up unabashedly. Fincher really understands male beauty in this video. And he revels in the idea of glamour and dress up here. Not a usual quality in his work, nor in male heterosexual directors for that matter in general, especially during the late 1980's. Fincher also really seems to understand the fantasy of Hollywood glamour and drag. though no drag is in this video, per se, the video has that sensibility of glamour that is put-on and posed. really kind of remarkable that Fincher does this here so expertly, and with such flair. lastly, I would say that this is peak madonna, absolutely. yet, so is "ray of light" which was released about a decade later. "ray of light" is peak madonna with both the song and the video. and madonna's vocals are way at their peak. madonna's vocals are at their fullest and highest point in "ray of light". they were never better, and went to an entirely new place for her in that song. also, I would say "material world" is peak madonna. I would say "take a bow" is peak madonna. I would say "justify my love" is peak madonna. I would say "express yourself" and "like a prayer" are peak madonna level. she truly has had that many peaks. and each of these songs and videos are completely different. they each stand on their own as great work. for all of the "stuff" around madonna and her career, ultimately, she is a great artist and an important cultural force. i feel lucky to have been a young person during the rise of her career and art, it has been very exciting. she always had something to say. and she always had something to show us that we hadn't seen before, quite.

Coming late to this so what can I add? Yes it's the Blond Ambition crew, the Horst poses, the recreation of the cited stars, and even the blouse have all been covered. MTV wanted that portion cut, but Madonna refused so they ended up playing it anyway. I will say that at the time this came out 9 of the 16 stars mentioned were still alive and Lauren Becall (2014) was last survivor. Oh, and that 2 second fragment of horn you hear was recreated by Pettibone (not sampled) for which they were sued, but they ultimately won as it was found to be de minimis (i.e., yes it was copied, but it was so small and insignificant to the "Vogue" composition, that it didn't legally matter). Warren asked her to write a song for "Dick Tracy" and he'd slept with everyone so that got her thinking. And then she didn't want to do a period song, so she did a modern song influenced by the period. The thing is, Madonna had always been accused by her detractors of not being "original" in that she just "stole" things from other people and "passed them off" as her own. So with this song, and particularly this video, she was sticking two fingers up at those critics by literally reciting and recreating moods, images and eras that had inspired her, and doing so openly and obviously. She didn't stop there as she went on to embody Louise Brooks for the Immaculate Collection booklet, Dietrich for the Girlie Show ("Deeper and Deeper"), Bette Davis for many of the "Bedtime Stories" promotionals (see the "Human Nature" cover, for example), Rita Hayworth at the 2007 Vanity Fair Oscar party, etc., etc. If you give me a "look", I can probably give you the inspiration behind it. She's done James Dean, Barbra Streisand ("Erotica" video outfit), Elvis, Mae West, pretty much everyone. There was even talk of her playing Mae West to Mickey Rooney's W.C. Fields, but it never happened. Back to Vogue, which was tagged onto "I'm Breathless" because she had nowhere else to put, much like "Die Another Day" was included on "American Life", though at least the latter sounded like it belonged. Lastly, why doesn't this begin with "what are you looking at?" Was that just the album version? I always liked that and the long opening, which is often truncated for the "2-minute" generation.

You, my friend, have the most incredible palette out of all the RU-vid reactors out there! You have an exceptional ability to pick up on even the tiniest nuances in music and imagery within videos. And you know why? It's because you have a wealth of experiences and knowledge that you can draw upon. Here's the thing, Johnny. Being older than 17 actually works in your favor. You're able to notice and appreciate so many more things than those younger folks. Trust me, they're missing out big time! By the way, I wanted to ask you something. Have you heard about the Celebration Tour by Madonna? It's a grand retrospective of her incredible 40-year career. I thought it might be right up your alley, considering your deep appreciation for music and artistry. It could be an amazing opportunity to witness the brilliance of one of the greatest artists of our time. Keep doing what you're doing, Johnny. Your insights and talent as a reactor are truly unmatched!

Lovely post, thank you! As I said on another post, I've actually been fortunate enough to have very few negative comments - It's just the suggestion that I might be dishonest that gets on my nerves. I thought about doing that little flashing text thing a couple of weeks ago and I've been laughing about it ever since! And yes, I have a ticket for the Celebration Tour in London in December!

It’s definitely Madonna’s best by far - it’s the only one I like and it was good enough to get over my deep dislike of her horrible personality. I was a young teen when In Bed With Madonna came out and I’m glad I saw her for what she is otherwise I’d have been yet another Madonna Queen - boring the arse off people for decades whilst they had careers, children and lives and I had nothing but cropped tops, ass-less chaps and a mountain of Madonna debt.
