John Kirwan becoming Chairman of World Rugby would be the worst possible thing that could ever happen to the sport. 1 point for drop goals? ‘Leaner props’? No red cards? Just say you hate South Africa and are bitter about the World Cup, we would respect you more for your honesty mate. Razor just last week said there’s more than 1 way to win a rugby game. Rugby is game played by people of all shapes and sizes (we love you Ox and Frans, don’t listen to this guy) and won by using a Myriad of tactics. JK wants to make sure that the game can only be played the All Black way because the All Black way has been figured out. So rather than adapt he wants to make it illegal to play any other way. I’m also getting sick of this narrative from the pacific(more specifically New Zealand) that we need to change the game to “make it more exciting”. Do everyone a favour and just go watch and comment on rugby league because you hold it to such high regard as this beacon of hope and truth. Rugby (union) is a sport first and an entertainment product second. Teams aren’t training during the week to entertain you on the weekend, they’re training to win the game, whatever it takes. If that means slowing down the ball to win the game so be it. The players can only hope that in the act of them playing the game and displaying their skill you will be entertained but that’s not their first priority, that’s not the coach’s first priority or the DORs first priority. Let the marketing guys sell you a product, let the players play the game they want to play. The truth is Rugby union is only in decline in the pacific. Bulls vs Stormers fixture coming this weekend already has 30,000 tickets sold and counting. I don’t recall a single Super Rugby game in the last 5 years putting 30,000 bums on seats, including the finals. The URC is posting record matchday attendances and TV ratings season after season. 2023 final had 55,000 fans in attendance. That sounds like a growing league. Tier 2 countries like Georgia are joining the challenge cup (does JK even know what that is?) and professionalising. For all intents and purposes the game of rugby (union) is growing everywhere around the world EXCEPT the pacific nations. It’s partly because people in Pacific Rugby boardrooms are taking their expert advice from Sir John Kirwan. The results are in the pudding. Now he wants to emulate that same trajectory on a global scale by being given a bigger platform? No sir, not my rugby. We teach our kids to scrum, we tell them to pick up weight if they want to make the first team, we play full contact from under 7, we make them do target practice 50 meters out from under 14 level, we teach them a drop goal could be the difference that wins you a World Cup. Now we must change our identity and start playing rugby league? Because Sir John Kirwan doesn’t like our style of play? No sir, not my rugby. You teach your boys how to entertain the crowd, we’ll teach ours how to win rugby games. I kind of agree with Sir JK on the 1 nation 1 vote issue. Political power monopolies In the sport are a farce and we should be giving bigger platforms to nations like Tonga, Samoa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Chille. Rugby needs to get rid of the old boys club mentality. Love you Sir JK
