Is It Worth Selling Everything For a Porsche 911 Turbo ? 991.1 Turbo Review

Like them or not, Porsche makes some of the best driver focused cars on the market. Yes, they may not be as exotic as a Ferrari or as wild looking as a Lambo, but you can always count on them to be engineered for everything with the driver in mind. On this episode I get to drive an icon, the Porsche 911 Turbo. Some of you may remember back when I had my 997 911, I loved that car, but it has its flaws. Today we find out just how much an improvement the 991 chassis is and how the Turbo model factors in.

EatSleepDrive your 997.1 had the standard interior, if it had the nicer full leather interior you probably would have a different opinion, especially a 997.2 with the better buttons. The Turbo always comes with the full leather, even earlier generations, so it’s always had a more upscale GT feeling.

Really enjoyed the review thanks! I drove a 991.1 c2s pdk last month. They have depreciated around 50% from new when you include taxes. Very capable car and lots of grip due to the wide track, huge tires and redesigned suspension. It was a wonderful balance of daily driving comfort and performance. It did not make me want to sell everything for it. It cant be quite frustrating not being able to get even close to the limits on city streets.

My dealer sent me to the Porsche driving experience at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, AL. On the track which is nearly 2.4 miles long, I drove a 911 GTS, Turbo S and a 718 Cayman S or GTS. I was expecting to love the GTS but I preferred the Turbo S. These were all 991.2 cars so nothing was naturally aspirated. I loved that car and I wound up driving the Turbo S the most. They also have a separate course for launch control and the only car they used was the Turbo S. Talk about blurrrrrring your world. The Turbo would be a better daily driver too. But, given the choice, I'd still take the GT3 or the GT3 RS. They handle so well and the exhaust sound just turns my smile dyno to 700HP.
@jad4ca
@jad4ca 4 года назад
The Turbo offers more power to be sure but the GT3 and RS n/a engines offer more personality and spine-tingling high-rpm rush vs the vacuum sound of the turbo. And those cars are typically quite a bit lighter than the turbos so the handling and braking are crisper

Great video. For me the 997.2 is the right pick. The interior quality is much improved over the 997.1, you keep the hydraulic steering, manual handbrake, manual gearbox and smaller body. Get it with pccb’s but then swap the rotors for steels. That way you get the massive calipers, brake servo etc andassive rotors, but keeping the cost down :)

Jebach understandably so if that’s the case. The 991.1 will be remembered as a bit of a flawed model due to its bad steering I think. The first gen electric steering just wasn’t very good and even today I think the hydraulic steering is way better than emu electric system I’ve driven.

I'm a huge Porsche guy, and I own the 997.1 911 Turbo. This was my dream car. While I would certainly "take one" if someone offered a 991 Turbo (I'm not stupid) but they seem a little too big. However I do love their look! The one huge advantage of the 991 series is the gorgeous interior. Your comment about the "two hands on the wheel" is so spot on. One of the biggest things I had to get used to was when passing a car on the highway. In a normal car you can hit the gas and signal and make your pass when there's no on coming traffic. In a 911 Turbo you need to hang back about three car lengths because when you hit the gas to pass, you'll find yourself running into the back end of the car in front of you. For inexperienced drivers I've seem do this each time. Kind of scary when I have people driving my baby.

Great question. They both feel very Porsche, but the 911 is really more of a GT car. The Cayman is more of a true sports car. The mid engine layout, the size, and rear wheel drive make it feel so. The 911 is a much more refined experience. It sounds and feels way better as far as nvh, the 4 cylinder in the 718 is very rough. I'll take the 911 turbo in every scenario other than a tight twisty canyon road.

Sport steering wheel, sport chrono, PASM, PSE, does it have 20in carrera S wheels. 38k would be an exceptional price with all of those. With none of those that’s about average. @@lifeofkai1216 absolutely that's true! I think it has a pretty basic package although it does have the 20" wheels. I'm hoping they'll depreciate slightly maybe into the mid 30's soon so I can snag one at the right time 😁

PDK simplifies. Manual complicates. Pick your poison right? It's like question if you want a master chef to flambé your dinner for you or do you want to cook it yourself? Or like playing tennis do you prefer doubles(4 players) or Australian(3) because your left foot does nothing with auto

@@sharinglungs3226 French word, French pronunciation. If I remember my high school French correctly, to pronounce the final consonant in a French word it needs to have a vowel after it. Isn't English a great language?

EatSleepDrive: 10:12 Brake discs become consumables when you track a car, so unless you have a s**tload of money, I would stick with steel brakes-preferably slotted, not cross-drilled, because they last a lot longer with frequent heat cycles (like you get on the track).

Good review! I’m glad you touched on the unique feeling that earlier 911s give the driver. The only thing I think you could’ve done to make the video better, was a launch control, filming from the outside. It would have added some nice drama to your video 😉!

The 992 C2S is a pretty incredible car. I'd probably pick that. Although the turbo may hold it's value a bit better, if that's a concern for you at all.

1:54 not wanna sound mean, but did you have a chance to also drive a turbo without rear steering? I have watched a review of a guy who owned several porsches and he was once doing some sort of track/performance day with a bunch of other people. those people were talking the whole time about the amazing rear steering and how good it was, until my review guy noticed that all those cars in fact didnt have the rear steering option. He talked to the organizer and he was like "yeah, you are right, but please dont tell everyone, we couldnt get the ones with actual rear steering...". Long story short: the standard steering of the turbo and 911 in general is already amazing enough, which makes me question if this several thousand dollar option is actually worth it and even noticable if you are not an experienced perforamance driver + on a high speed track

de·bris /dəˈbrē,ˌdāˈbrē/ Do not get the PCCB for track ... well do it ... but expect some $ to replace them ... I have had about 10 track days with my 991 Turbo S ... done 56k miles ... and now I might have to replace the discs ... I will know next service when they will do a density check ... if they are gone ... I'm looking at $25k for replacement set. I do love them though ... saving weight, better acceleration, better braking, no fade ... but $$$ ... When you are at 150-200 it does actually not feel that planted on autobahn. It might have been the section I was on, but at time I felt the car was skipping sideways which made it very iffy when I was hitting 200mph. In the M5 CP I felt no issue at all hitting 195mph and that was with quite a bit cross wind. The M5 was planted while the 911 felt iffy at those speeds.
