Join us as we follow a guided tour around one of Cornwall's most infamous mines, Levant. In 1919 there was a tragic disaster here, with 31 men losing their lives. The tour explains how the accident happened.
In addition the Cornish Beam engine has been restored. It is the only working engine in its original building. During the tour we get the opportunity to see it in action.
Music: 'Song for Cornwall' Boscastle Bouys Recorded at the Royal Cornwall Show, 2018. You can buy their album here: www.discogs.co...

''Cornwall forever my home''....and YOUR home which you obviously both love so much and share with all of us each week. Levant was shut when I visited sadly, but this tour has now shown me what it's like. Thank you. J x

Really liked how you put the song in there towards the end. Very fitting, and adding your own type of dedication to the lives lost. It was pretty cool seeing that engine working. Great video.

A trip around this Mine is well worth the cost of joining the National Trust alone. Another fantastic trip into Cornwall, i look forward to the next one.

What a fascinating place! My grandfather was a miner up in County Durham so I know how tough and dangerous it was below ground. It’s very poignant reading the descriptions of deaths and accidents particularly on the scale of Levant. I will try to pay a visit later this centenary year of the tragedy.

I find myself almost in tears....what a super video, very moving and history well explained. The choir at the end sums it all up so well. Sad but lovely all at the same time. It is such a huge part of the Cornish Heritage. A very well done an excellent video.

The Levant and Geevor Mine are two of my favourite spots in Cornwall. I have visited them several times, but your tour of the Levant Mine brought out new fascinating facts. I did know about the in 1919 tragedy that led to so many men losing their lives, but when the Boscastle Buoys sang 'Cornwall forever my home...' I'm afraid the floods of tears flowed. A Cornish male voice choir, singing in close harmony, does it every time!

Another interesting place to visit. We did go to this one, I think, many years ago now but I think that they have been made more interesting not. The NT do a wonderful job as do both of you by showing your visits there. Have a great weekend. Julie..

Hello Sarah and Andrew , Thank you so much for this video , always heartbreaking to hear of these sorts of tragic accidents. I am all to familiar with the risks associated with this industry, as I have mentioned before ,my husband has been in the mining industry for about 16 years and my daughter’s fiancé has been a miner for about 5 years . I hope all is well your way ! We are currently in Alabama where it has been close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit for about 3 days now, a little to hot for my taste lol but my husband loves it !! He actually took a position in a newly acquired mine and he is in the process of transitioning everyone over to a “ new way” of how things have to be done ,so we flew down to visit ,he wants to stay permanently so we may be relocating!! My fur girls would have to get used to this heat lol ,hope the fur boys are well ,Sending my happiness your way,Lori

Wow Lori! That sounds really exciting! I hope that the move proves valuable to you and your family. Glad you enjoyed the video, and the furboys are ok. Had a trip to the vets with our old boy, tooth infection which has now cleared with a course of tablets. He is bouncing around like a two year old - too much energy!! Sarah :)

Rather bittersweet with the death of the miners, but the song about the love for their Cornwall. My family has a history of coal mining in the south in the u s.

Hi Sarah and Andrew, very interesting video. Do you know if they are planning any kind of event to mark the 100th anniversary of the disaster? Such a beautiful place, but what a dangerous job. There was an earlier disaster at nearby Wheal Owles too.
@CornishWalkingTrails
@CornishWalkingTrails 5 лет назад
Oh yes, I remember reading the plaque about that and I think our friend, bob Acton covers it in his Carn Galver book ( I believe!). As for Levant, There was nothing obvious that I remember but it is a few months away and the mine shuts for the winter season, so maybe they will have to content themselves with our video!!!! Sarah ;)

Oh my sun would have a fit over that steam engine! I know nothing about mining. Exactly what kind of minerals were they mining for?
@CornishWalkingTrails
@CornishWalkingTrails 5 лет назад
Hi Anita, The minerals that were mined changed over the centuries but primarily tin and copper, with traces of other elements like gold and laterly, arsenic, at the turn of the 20th century. Our guide said there are still plenty of minerals in the mine but the fall in tin price as a result of surface mines elsewhere in the world meant this one was no longer profitable. Sarah :)
