Is It Worthy?! Montblanc Meisterstück 149 The Origin Collection Fountain Pen Review! 

I have my father's 149 that his mother gave him when he earned his PhD in 1974. I had it in my pocket (in a brand new Brooks Brothers shirt - another homage to him) at his funeral and it leaked MB permanent blue into the shirt. Has never leaked before or after that. His friend Hub came up to me after the ceremony and told us that my dad had a pen leak into his shirt his very first day of work when he and Hub were new hires.

Another wonderful video HJ! Montblanc should have you be their official ambassador. I do love what they did with this pen. A real celebration of an icon. I am not sure about the writing on the cap but perhaps it would grow on me?

I felt a sensation of pain when I saw this video posted. I just dropped over $1,000 a few weeks ago to purchase my first 149. If I’d known this was going to be released I would have certainly wasted. While I actually like the more classic look more than this 100th anniversary product, how can you pass up a 100th anniversary edition?? Ugh. I feel ill. Of course, I asked the sales people (and manager) at the Montblanc boutique store if they knew anything about a 100th anniversary edition product getting released and they said they hadn’t heard a thing. In any event, this is a lovely pen and thank you, Hemingway, for the fantastic review.

I have bought one and I am absolutely satisfied with this 149 the origin Collection. Perhaps I may buy one more. Mont Blanc 149 was actually launched in 1952. So technically, it’s 75th anniversary is due in 2027. Let’s wait for another three years to get one more masterpiece. I also miss the Mont Blanc orient express as I couldn’t get my hands on it.

It was very significant to me your view on what means owning such a beautiful and well made pen. I would add though that, apart from encouraging you to make some important and meaningful things, this fountain pen would remain surrounded by your specific energy which would be transferred to everything you would put down on the paper, increasing and facilitating much your communication to your readers. And, taking over another comment, I would agree that this special Montblanc 149 would become soon tightly connected to your spiritual being and it would react accordingly. I won’t give you a lot of trouble about this but I feel I need to start getting your comparisons on point. The German Montblanc is comfortable and plush like a Mercedes S series and the handling as precise as a classic air cooled Porsche 911… which are known for feeing every piece of gravel in the road through the steering wheel. Just attempting to pull it all back into the German theme. Plus, as a Porsche man, I’m just having a hard time letting the horsey you’re mentioning get the credit on a video about German engendering lol.. All jokes aside, I didn’t realize how much I’d like this 100th anniversary pen. It’s beautiful. I love that it’s sort of a throwback. I’d too you on IG that basically you can’t improve in perfection buuuut, I'm going to allow this. This one is almost like writing with a sculpture. It might function like a dream but that form is something to admire.

the nib of this pen is only size M, but from your video I observe that the lines of this M nib are quite fine. It almost looks like a Japanese M nib.

Value is in the mind of the observer. If obligations are met, finances allow and passion for these objects overflows then yes, it is worth it!

Very beautiful example of the Montblanc family of pens,my only fountain pen from Montblanc is the Starwalker with a medium nib.

Well...I'm sorry, but the silver piston knob is not to my taste, nor the silver on the cap. I personally prefer the classic 149 as it is. I'm rather relieved--no temptation to buy now! (I was worried!) But I'm glad that you love and enjoy it.

At the price point it will be at in the US I think that I'd rather get a Nakaya Dorsal Fin v2, but maybe I'd go the other way if I didn't already have a 149. I do like the platinum trim better than the gold trim. The pocket clip throws me off though, since it is more in the style of a Pilot or Namiki pocket clip. I like the curve of it, but there is something about how streamlined the standard 149 is that appeals to me a little more. Also, I just got my modern kaweco piston sport, so I'll likely be writing mostly with it for a while. It is really well done; I really hope they release one in stainless steel in the future. Tuning for sound makes sense to me. A friend manufactures a device relying on tactile feedback. He found users were as much affected by the sound of the unit as they were smooth operation. A gritty sound translated to a perceived gritty feel. I swear my Opus 88 in fine feels scratchier when it's nearly empty. I've wondered if that's from the hollow body producing a different sound than when full of ink.

I have the Platinum 149, not the 100 year version, I think the silver color is less formal looking. Nice pen, congrats. I wish that I had been able to get mine with a fine nib because I find Montbnlanc nibs to be wider than some others, well not wider than Pelikan's. Montblanc does a very good job tuning their nibs.

Could I suggest a show topic? It would be which pens have the best (or highest) price-quality ratio? For example, in my opinion the Lamy 2000 has a great price-quality ratio. Gold nib, piston fill, great quality, iconic design (admittedly not for all). I think with that pen Lamy is leaving money behind (I think that way a little bit less given Lamy's recent price increase for that pen, but there is inflation). Pelikan, on the other hand, makes great pens--but you really pay for them. Pelikan isn't leaving much money behind. Just an idea.

The chipped bands is proof that the user used the clip with their pockets, and butterfingers. Modern fountain pen users who use pen pouches will less likely to have this happen, as the pen is protected, particularly Rickshaw cases. Sonic tuning is one approach, but I think it happens in the design phase, and replaced with imaging tuning instead for better nib consistency.

'Gentlemen, start your fountain pens!' Cliche I know, but had to say it. It should properly be, "Lights out, and away we go!" But I'm American, so here we are. Enjoy your wonderful, wonderful pen!

For me, the design and aesthetics of this 149 The Origin Collection makes it the ultimate workhorse fountain pen while the original 149 with its understated elegance is perfectly suited for professional, diplomatic, and other high-end occasions. I already have the original 149 in Platinum, the Origin Collection Solitaire Fountain, and pre-ordered the Origin Collection 149... 100th Anniversary only comes once in a lifetime.

How were you able to obtain this so quickly? I just spoke to my MB boutique this afternoon and they have no available stock for sale - only a few pens available in the US.

It's very surprising it comes in a smaller presentation box than the regular 149.

I thought that the Origin 149 came only in black and the Origin Legrand came in the blue, no? I would buy the 149 in blue. I need to find it.

Hemingway.......... My name is Ben, & I have enjoyed writing with fountain pens for a little more than a year. I enjoy your content, & trust your advice. Thank you for taking the time to help folks like me who know so little! My wife bought me a Montblanc Meisterstuck 149. She spent much more money than she should have, as I am new at fountain pens. Here is my question, though. I have learned of a term "everyday fountain pen." I realize a pen as expensive as the 149 would not typically be referred to as an "everyday pen," but in your opinion would it be OK to use the pen on a regular basis? I suppose I ask the question because it seems to be such a nice pen I wonder if I am being a little irresponsible using it frequently. It seems like I am putting a lot of miles on a car that is too nice to drive ! If I use the pen frequently, will I eventually wear down the nib....... or something like that? I realize this question is not easy to answer, but do you at least have some advice, please? Thank you very much...........

Beautiful pen, but I was expecting more. The production model, for me, is not being outshined by this Anniversary model.

This purchase won't put you a food stamps or living under a freeway. This is a very personal choice, while MontBlanc is not my preference (and price is not the reason) any fountain pen that brings you that amount of joy, now and for many years to come, is a true bargain.

If I had that sort of money to buy a pen, I'd get an urushi pen. There are several in that price range. Maybe (another) Nakaya. Actually sterling silver pens are getting up there these days -- I love those. There are again several options in that price range.

I prefer the regular 149. My Grail pen.

Thanks for this very informative review. I had been intending to buy the 100th anniversary pen, but having actually seen it (thanks to you!) I'm unimpressed by it, and so now won't buy one. The 149 was a spin off from the pre-war 139, so, IMO, the 149 is not really the ideal model on which to base a 100th anniversary pen celebrating 1924. Why did the company not re-make one of its 1920s pens? It would have been a lot more authentic. Using an existing base- model (the 149) is a "cheap" way to make a 100th anniversary. Doubtlessly, Montblanc will charge a massive premium , playing on the usual "snob" factor associated with its pens. The metal piston turner may also unbalance the pen and may make it a "worse" pen to actually write with than the normal 149.

To me this edition is the biggest disappointment for me pen-wise this year... They just used the same injection resin, a metal piston knob making the pen very unbalanced, and a nib design that is incredibly uninspired. Montblanc had the whole Art Nouveau mouvement to draw inspiration from, and they did nothing with it. I would take the dark blue 149 Orient Express from last year any day over this one!

Yes.. you can pass this on to your daughter or possibly a grandson.. just like you could a Rolex. On a side note, I’d just read a comment on a video earlier that said Montblanc was like Rolex, just an overpriced name. The people always sort of miss the pedigree and how they have repeatedly made a mark through history and by owning one, somehow your a part of it.. or at least you get a little taste of that greatness. Besides the craftsmanship, that’s what you pay for.

The video is as lovely as always, although it does seem more like a pure advertisment at the end. I don’t get the appeal with Montblanc. I mean yes, it is a symbol for wealth and probably power, almost like a Ferrari. But if you buy a Ferrari you still get a car that is so much better than most other cars. For Montblanc if you have a look at the material that is used or the performance of the nib, there are so many other fountain pens that are doing better and sell for a much smaller price. Although even some of them are still overpriced.

The writing on the cap looks absolutely awful. The Three M's in the mountain look very cheap. Also don't really like the platinum on the cap. Also do not like the fact that the nib is not two tone. I prefer the original. Very disappointing.
