This film is a Symphony of Violence, astonishing and brilliant. When Leguizamo tells Viggo what Josef has done, and Viggo responds with a single, “Oh.”, we now have a clear image of the deadly character of Wick. Perfection.

Oh. My. God. That line. No one will ever win an Oscar for screenwriting thanks to two letters or a single word. But the sheer cojones to put that into a screenplay, to trust the actor, the director, and the audience to get the message across. That's good fucking writing.

@@sevach Something else I really like about Michael Nyquist's performance and the writing for Viggo is how he slowly unravels from the big bad Russian mob boss to a broken man laughing to himself about his inevitable death. CinemaWins pointed some details out in his "Everything Great About John Wick" video, but basically, he's constantly getting intoxicated in some way -During the raid on John's house, he goes though an entire bottle of Glenlivet -When he's discussing the contract on John with Marcus, he picks up a glass of vegetable juice but puts it back down, because why would getting in your veggies matter when you know you're likely going to die in a few days -After giving up Iosef's location to John, he smokes a joint to numb the pain of his son's death
@3Rayfire
@3Rayfire 4 года назад
@@ProfDCoy And it's the physical acting that should get applause too. His entire demeanor changes after Aurelio's line, "Well...sir, because he stole John Wick's car and uhhh...he killed his dog." Viggo's entire demeanor changes, from authoritarian and in charge to what can only be described as mortal terror, instant humility, resignation, and also understanding. "Oh". The entire point of the call was Viggo asking Aurelio why he had struck his son, the King asking one of his officers why he struck the prince. But once the reason was given the officer was immediately excused. It was simple clarity. He could've easily said, "I understand...you acted appropriately of course." He could've even said, "Shit". But that wasn't necessary. He just had to say, "Oh"...and then the cherry on top, his arm dropped, and he just...let it swing. He would've had more recourse if you had told him a volcano was about to erupt beneath his house.

Agreed. That's why he asked Vigo if the contract was open or closed. He needed to know whether he had to protect John from other hitters.
@jmalmsten
@jmalmsten 6 лет назад
One part often overlooked in both John Wick films is that he isn't entirely merciless. Yes, if you are the target, then John is the friggin terminator, but if you are not, all you have to do is to move out of the way. Do that and he will spare you. That, along with the very relateable anger that comes from puppy murder, makes for a surprisingly likeable, well... slasher monster. You see it with Jimmy the policeman scared shitless on Johns doorstep, he probably made sure to tell his collegues to not look into the events surrounding the noise complaint and what followed. This made sure that no innocent cops stood in Johns way. We also see it outside the nightclub where the giant bouncer wisely goes home quietly when realising who stands behind him. John Leguisamo could have been in Wicks way but chose to help him. And even at the start of the second film where John silently offers Peter Stormare a truce and Peter wisely accepts. Even in the first film. The very moment Nyqvist gives up and let's John go after the son, John immidiately drops his sights down and leaves him be, after all effort, his goal isn't Nyqvist its his son. John only resumes the hounding of the father when his friend was murdered. It's a very long way of iterating that if you are not his target, and you're not in his way, you're perfectly safe. Normally that is a kind of dangerously psychotic way of life so I wouldn't applaud it. But considering what one must do to become a target of John Wick... Well... Frankly... You had it coming...
@ProfDCoy
@ProfDCoy 5 лет назад
The only thing that I still ponder to this day is that one short scene between John and Jimmy. How did John ever impress upon a policeman in a suburban area that he was a hitman but that's cool? I'm not saying it's impossible, just that I want to know that story. Because the rest of what occurs in the movie is easily explained with "the people in that world look the other way", but Jimmy, a policeman, feels different. It raises such interesting questions! Are they old friends? Was Jimmy involved in that world somehow? Did John befriend Jimmy at some point later on - personally or through his wife - and then gradually pass on the twin truths that 1) he was a contract killer, and 2) YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR (anymore)? And as a result, is Jimmy now disappointed? Scared? Conflicted? Unsure? I need this explained! (And I also understand it needn't be and probably shouldn't be.)

If John was Thanatos the god of death it would help with the myth thoughts as all the gods respect thanatos and don't dare to attack him for what he is the God of and who his parents are, Nyx and Erebus, Nyx being the night and darkness of the world he lives in and the chaos of Erebus in all the fight scenes that John seems at home in. As well as Thanatos's parents protect him as shown in Greek myths where even zues did not dare to even think about going against Nyx to get revenge on hypnos and John is always protected by his black suits and vests.

one thing I would like to add is Thanatos isn't the god of death actually, a god is someone who rules over a certain concept to explain in the simplest way while Thanatos is death itself, he don't rule over it, he is death. Which makes him that more scarier

I recently watched another movie that involved a lot of eye to eye contact before a killing and I'm suddenly struck by the contrast. It was about Albert Pierrepoint, tha hangman in charge of executing Nazi war criminals condemned by The British. After the condemned were led to the gallows, as they were being prepared to drop, Pierrepoint would maintain constant eye contact with them, usually with a hand on the shoulder or their arm - not restraining them, just a human letting another human know that they were there. The eye contact was maintained, unblinking, until the hood went on, not gloating, not vengeful, not cruel, but almost merciful. "Look at me. Just look at me. Don't think, just look at me." From entering the condemned cell to opening the trapdoor took him a maximum of 12 seconds. He had a truly gruesome job, cleaning up some of the worst human filth that ever walked The Earth - something he obviously understood because he took his job *_seriously_* - but he still treated his charges with as much decency, dignity and humanity as possible, under the circumstances. I dunno, watching Wick and reading this comment (as well as the many others like it) sparked the memory and, like I said, the contrast struck me. That scene impressed me just as much as you for the record - I'm just having some deep thoughts about how fluid our modern attitudes towards violent death can be. Feel free to ignore . . .

I saw John responding to pain. The whole film is John responding to pain. Physical pain doesn’t phase him except functionally. I mean, yeah, the look on his face in that particular scene…the outside is cold. Keanu actually does a really good job with that particular scene with conveying ambivalence in that scene. That’s how a person like John would deal with that type of pain as a result of someone inflicting something that deep. Especially having taken something from him that he can never get back from someone he loved (probably wasn’t much of that in his life) that he can never get back. It’s as cold as it was when it was done to him. There’s plenty of emotion in it though.
@someone2746
@someone2746 2 года назад
Having the Monty Python dialogue there pretty much sums up how bad the perpetrators fucked up for the rest of the movie. He starts out with the douchebag at the sink, and then it escalates to that particular scene. There’s not really any others like it in terms of catharticism for John…the rest of it is just “point and click” from Point A to Point B. Cold and remorseless? Yeah. No pain? The movie starts with showing how much John is already in. He transfers it just like everyone else does, minus the rampage.

I want to mix up the Gods & Goddesses represented. Firstly, Winston as Zeus. While I can see where you're going with that, I believe he works better as Hades, the Keeper of the Underworld. Especially when you consider Charon is granting access to the club. Marcus works amazingly as Apollo. He is continuously bathed in Golden Light, and John immediately goes to him for Guidance of what to do after Helen's funeral. The Clean Up Crew could also represent Thanatos, the God of Death. Edit; A couple more. Aurelio would be perfect as Hephaestus. He builds and fixes cars, after all. Viggo is already perfect as Ares, especially with who I believe represents John Wick. John is represented by Zeus. In Greek Mythology, Zeus is the youngest of the 3 Brother Gods; Hades, Poseidon and Zeus, but is the most powerful. The reason I feel this works with Viggo's Ares is that based on Viggo's proclamation of John being the reason he is who he is, is very similar to a son being the man he has become due to his father. Plus, the thunderstorm in the climax, rather than showing Winston now on John's side, instead is a show of John's wrath following Viggo and ending with them both potentially being destroyed.
@mp7950

Team VLCN This makes sense until you look at the fact A. Zeus never cared about his wife, especially as John did B. Zeus is probably one of the least reasonable of the Olympians for many reason. Both of this issues would be fixed if we change John to Hades, I know weird choice but hear me out. Both Hades and John love their wives and in most versions they are loved back. Like John, Hades only becomes cruel when needed but when they’re pissed, all Hell breaks loose. Another similarity is both are extremely feared, the Greeks were so scared of Hades they called him Pluton to avoid saying his name.

One thing worth mentoning,Stahelski and Leitch are both huuuge fans of Michael Mann,John Woo and S.Korean action cinema. The whole shootout in the club is a hommage to the shootout in the club,in ''Collateral'',the whole ''tactical shootout''-thing is inspired by ''Heat''. The whole ''stylish gangsters in a criminal underworld with a code of honour'' is very reminiscented of John Woo's Hong Kong ganster epics,like ''Better Tommorrow'' or ''The Killer''. Also,Stahelski/Leitch have said that they were ispired by ''The Man from Nowhere'' a fantastic Korean action-drama and judging by the trailer for John Wick 3,Stahelski must be a huge fan of ''The Villainess'' which is awesome,that movie kicks ass. In an age,where Hollywood directors,have no fucking clue on how to shoot,choreograph and most importantly edit an action scene,this movie,along with ''The Raid'' and ''Mad Max:Fury Road'' was a breath of fresh air. Sadly,the trend of overusage of shaky cam and 300 quick cuts per minute hasn't died out yet,in Hollywood.

Winston is (especially by 2) Hades--the God of the Underworld (Continental) and Wealth. That's why his assistant is Charon. I'll stick with Josef as Ares, but John is Nemesis--the holy terror. Note that 2 also has "a table of 12". We haven't SEEN John kill Olympus. That's in 3. It's not a 1:1 ratio of myth (I can see the Zeus aspect ESPECIALLY in the first), but we are seeing the modern gods of Crime deal with an angel coming back from the wilds. John's going to be the ultra-violent Prometheus, calling up ragnarok.

Seriously terrific video. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch that movie quite the same way again. You have fundamentally changed that film for me. This is the first of your videos I have watched but it will not be the last

Subscribed. Your appreciation of these movies shows a level of respect for this art that is often lost on the critics of late. Criticism aimed at movies doesn't always equate to 'importance of opinion'. Thanks for taking the time to make these. I hope to see many more!

Your observation of the world of the mobs and assassins as Olympus is supported in the film's text, as the concierge at The Continental is actually named Charon and he is the one to welcome John back to the Underworld. As to the voting, this one is actually a really hard pick for me but I tend to enjoy when you dig deeper into films that seem like simple romps on the surface, so I'll pick Serenity.

I think I've watched these analysis videos on John Wick that you do more than the movies. All three of them have helped me to appreciate the movies a lot more than I would have without them. Thank you Mikey for doing what you do.

This was SO excellent, as usual. I loved John Wick a ton and this just made me love it, and Keanu Reeves, even more... which I didn't think was possible. So thank you! That being said, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the one film I've been pining for a MwM of since the very first MwM I ever saw. I'd love to see the other two as well, but holy shit Eternal Sunshine is my favorite movie and I'd be ecstatic to see your take on it!

Red Xs generally show unlicensed After Effects plugins (in this case, the fade transition), but they're usually visible throughout the entire transition in question, so my best guess is that the renderer only checked the licence after rendering the first frame of the transition.

Chainsawsuit Original aw, that's a bummer. Oh well... Good job on this latest episode, btw. When I first watched this movie, I thought it that, yeah, the world building and cameras work was pretty cool but that it didn't really offer anything new to the table, and then you practically blew my mind with the references to ancient gods, so yeah, I'm definitely watching John Wick a second time because of you, Mikey :)

You've put up Eternal Sunshine so many times. You clearly want to do Whale Rider and yes, I've never even heard of it. And everyone will want Serenity. I wish these were easier for you to make but its clear you put tons of time and thought into every video. I wish you could do all three (I'm sure, eventually, you will). Your Scifi triptych took a lot out of you so I imagine that's a road you're not looking to cross again any time soon. I love your work, I love your interpretations .. so I'm going to trust your vision and vote for your own pick: Whale Rider. I still think you should do Wall-E.

Awesome analysis! However, when you mentioned the anti-balletic action, my mind went to A History of Violence, since that was always, to me, the antithesis of Matrix slick gunplay. Then I realized that it's an incredibly similar story to John Wick. So maybe it's like a different production of the same Greek myth. A lot of the points you presented can be applied. Also, Serenity!
