I love Khun, but I think there is a fundamental difference between how Baam gets his powers and how Khun gets his. Baam is an irregular who is unique among other irregulars who are strong from the get go. The story very often shows that Baam's defining "irregular" feature is that he swallows up everything. Attacks, shinsu, spells, creatures, souls are all things that Baam can swallow up and take power from, and it is how he has been able to reach the levels of power he now has. So when he absorbs the billions (i think) souls on the hell train, the girl thinks that he would suffer agonizing pain in order to adapt, but Baam absorbs the power easily. The fact that is was so easy is the point, and it's what gives the scene so much weight, becasue it shows that Baam is an disturbing and seemingly unnatural existence which is closer to some kind of monster than a talented chosen one. Khun on the other hand, does not share the mysterious and unnatural way baam gains power, so him gaining abilities so quickly and suddenly feels completely different. Khun is a small fish surrounded by sharks in the story right now, so it is understandable thaat he needs to get stronger to avoid being immediately killed by every person they encounter, and it is good that he is doing the best he can with his wits. However, him having white's power and the sweetfish, then being able to use complex spells with little to no explanation beyond "he just can" is not acceptable. If SIU wants Khun to get the spell, we would be much more willing to accept it if we saw khun reflecting about the power and it's uses, experimented with the powers, or simply realized that he might be able to access white's spells with some extra thinking. If any of those example happened first it would be fine, but now it is almost like he pulls it out of his ass like "oh by the way, i can do this now". TL:DR, Baam gaining power ups quickly is part of his character and is relevant to the story. Same is not true for Khun so his power ups need more explanation or build up. If I got any information wrong feel free to correct me

Bam is an Irregular sure, but I’m talking from a storytelling perspective. It can be annoying seeing only one character get the special circumstances all the time. If we’re going to have yet another “special circumstance,” I’m glad it’s not Bam this time. Again that’s from a storytelling perspective.
@SynysterGatesCovers
@SynysterGatesCovers 4 месяца назад
@drbonehead from a storytelling perspective it makes no sense for non-irregulars to be doing anything remotely on par with even low class rankers. Rak is an exception being a peice of the main body of the ancient giant. And here we have khun being a "danger" to Dumas. Arguably the most powerful non-irregular we've seen so far. We can't just ignore what the plots already given us as hard facts because it's more exciting for random characters to get ass pulls
@whodis3489
@whodis3489 4 месяца назад
@@drbonehead Storytelling perspective is not a good angle to take when the story itself tells us that non-irregulars should not be able to do these things. WHY does the story need to have this contrivance for Khun? Can SIU not write an interesting story where the powerscaling is kept consistent and Khun fights and outsmarts people on his own level? You are just accepting the fact that it HAS to be this way, that is these characters are going to get absurd powerups and you're glad it's not Bam. Even though from the first season the story has shown us that Bam cannot swim with these minnows forever. When is Bam's introspection going to tell him that Khun and Rak are not built to face this danger and that he needs to stay away from them? Now to me that character work is more interesting than the dues ex machina powerups we have been getting.
@drbonehead
@drbonehead 4 месяца назад
@@whodis3489I agree that would be more interesting, I think for the current landscape that SIU has built (which might be problematic for powerscaling, TOG has always had an issue with powerscaling) giving Khun a moment like this is not as monumentally horrible for the story as people make it out to be. He had a counter for this one person’s armor, and that’s really about it. I’m saying that Khun as a character needs moments to keep him relevant and interesting. Is this the best way to go about it? Probably not, but I personally enjoyed it for what it was and what it served for his character at this moment in this crazy landscape.

I'm relatively fine with what khun did that chapter because it wasn't really done to Dumas. Dumas was fine, it was the armor that broke down. I find it more believable that the spell can affect an item than if it actually hurt Dumas himself. I also like the idea of Khun using spells, but it should have been more clearly set up beforehand. If we knew that Khun was learning spells, or had a conversation with Vicente about it, it would feel more like a payoff than a Deus ex Machina.

@Dr. Bonenhead after sitting on this question again. the problem isnt necessarily a khun issue. here are my thoughts, baam as a protagonist is a blank sheet he is bland by design. I dont mean this in a negative way i actually think siu is writing baam very well. he is a person that has had no one in his life until rachel. as such he can be akin to a newborn baby where he only learns based on what he is told or shown to an extreme degree (which his abilities to absorb and copy things represents beautifully). Ultimately rather than the story telling following bams personality its more of bams presence influencing the people with "Strong" personalities around him. Bam has always had a second main character or foil to tell his story. essentially, baam rarely speaks for himself or had his own tangible desires it has been evident throughout the entire story its just way more in your face now. Rachel was his impetus in season 1. Wangnan and Baam were mirrors of each baam had unlimited talent and no ambition, whereas wangnan had the opposite. Now if we were to take khun into perspective I see him as baams super ego, that more often than not speaks for bams and makes his logical choices. . rak on the other hand is baams id. So when the 3 of them are together anytime a rational decision must be made khun takes center stage, when a rash decision must be made rak takes the stage, and finally baam for all other aspects in regards to this trios story ulitimatley driving the story forward. this formula has always existed proof is the trio vs reflejo is proof of concept. khun made the plan, baam executed, and rak was the wild card. The probem is the ranker scale that now exists which the formula is no longer sustainable as far as khun is concerned. rak can get a pass due to being a native one. hatz got a pass due to an exceptional weapon, hockney has his foresight. endorsi has the princess clout behind her. however khun and shibisu always had wits and its become very jarring seeing khuns "intellect" go from being big brain like redirecting a bullet into a high rankers head(everything needed for this was able to be followed by the reader lefav foreshadowed this by saying she can only use 2 bullets etc). to now being i am now a sweetfish spell expert because i am khun i am smart. TLDR khun went from being a cunning light bearer reluctant to use his natural ice spear bearer abilities to a overbearing plot device.

Was talking to you about this on twitch just a few days ago Joe, and yep nothing's changed I still completely agree with you We're at a point in the story where so many of the regulars we met that have joined Bam in his journey are pretty much useless or don't have a situation in which they can actually help him now because of how powerful he is But now we have Rak and Khun power boosts where in both scenarios the powers themselves can be self explanatory and they're actually doing something imo I think this is a big improvement My final thoughts on this matter are, other powers, items, weapons, spells and workshop creations already exist in the tower that could give a regular the power to harm a ranker or high ranker even if it's just a accidental moment so I don't think what happened with Khun is anywhere near as bad as some people in the Tog community think

My issue with AA started when he received Ayu/Sweetfish. During the Hidden Floor, Aguero went through an arc about accepting the Khun side of him and acquiring the Ice Spear. There's a path forward for him as he wants to challenge Eduan in the future to become the next Family Head and he couldn't do that if he was "running away" like he was. Ayu renders all of that development pointless as AA no longer has the capability of using Ice Shinsu because of Ayu, a power from the Yeon Family that would make far more sense for Yihwa to have, not AA. Couple this with White's power gives me a very uncomfortable feeling that AA is going to take away traits from other families and use it as his own. With White's spell he now has a gimmick that's unique to Hoaquin, Vincente, and even Bam. I'm not a fan of the direction his character is taking. I'm at a lost on what SIU wants to do with AA because he's a character that never needed to fight to shine and that was a unique aspect of his character. AA with all these power ups could potentially wreck the tension when he finally meets Maria again. There's also the talk of something "bad" will happen due to AA using Ayu, but at this point I don't believe for a single second that SIU will do anything to put the trio in any real danger. AA has died several times at this point and I just don't care. I want to be wrong about this but I've lost some trust towards SIU in this regard. As a character I find AA rather annoying and uninteresting. It feels like SIU keeps AA and Rak around because the fanbase will complain if they aren't around so he has to find contrived ways to keep them in the story. Maria was mentioned as recently as ch 577 so I'm excited to see where this plot point goes. I've been intrigued by her character since the start and I think she could do a lot for AA's character development. I have a lot of stocks invested in her character and I think her introduction, being AA's Rachel in a way, could be the saving grace of his character. Keep in mind we still haven't gotten AA's backstory yet, just bits and pieces. I want to know the full story of the Anges faction, his mother, sister, and Maria. We know from Hidden Floor that he's worried that Kiseia is hunting him down, which shows that he does feel guilty about betraying his own sister and family. We don't know why Maria abandoned AA, the guy who stopped the Hell Train and the powerful, dangerous guy he's connected to that Asensio mentioned back in ch 515(could even be Hell Train guy). There's still intrigue to his character but Season 3 so far has been a bad showcase for him.

It's annoying that Rak's upgrade was first used on someone so powerful that his accomplishments feel cheap. Bam vs Data Zahard and Bam vs Kallavan are examples of what should have happened: When Bamm fought Data Zahard, he was just barely not keeping up with Zahard when Zahard wasn't serious. Because of this, when Bamm started to tap into his true power, it was believable that Zahard had to start taking him seriously. The increase was also gradual so Zahard was still portrayed as stronger until close to the end. When Bamm first fought Kallavan, he had no chance whatsoever. The tiny wound on an already weakened spot was all Bamm could do despite Kallavan letting it hit him. However, the reaction of Kallavan & Evankhell made it clear that what Bamm did was absurd. It hyped up Bamm without making Kallavan look bad in comparison. If Bamm's attack took an arm off of Kallavan, than it would actually be less impressive for the reader because now Kallavan looks weak. When Rak got his powerup, he easily beat and (probably) killed Rashut. If Rak instead only managed to escape and slightly injure Rashut, a High Ranker, than it would still be impressive, but not so unbelievable that it comes across as a joke. Bamm was in a tough spot because Rak was a liability, so Rak breaking free would let Bamm deal with Weiwei and move on to fight Rashut together. Rak would show that he isn't a burden without breaking the viewer's suspension of disbelief. This way it's established that Rak can keep up without it being frustrating that he went right back to being useless against Dumas, because he still isn't quite there yet.

the main problem i'm having is that any regulars (not including Baam), regardless of whatever power-ups, can have any chance in a fight with rankers, let alone Dumas who's probably top 50? like it just makes no sense. it's the most egregious with Khun who it seems like SIU is constantly throwing in situations among high rankers and he should be killed basically instantly but he always can talk-no-jutsu his way out or use some random power up that he didn't earn. constantly painting yourself into the corner and having to "deus ex machina" your way out is just bad writing and it's happening more and more. like watching Khun and Rak "fight" against branch leaders and Dumas and anything but being instantly killed is just silly and it's hard to feel invested in what you're reading.

I still have faith in SIU's writing ability but I do think he should have "fridged" (as tv tropes would call it) AA for a little longer, the point of fridging is to draw an emotionak reaction from the MC and I dont think we saw enough of that. I also think the 'small fish big pond' alogory that another commentor used should have some lasting side effects on khun; wr already know that he is from a family where you have to might to survive and strengh is everything ( we also know thar khun is a very guilty, very self-blaming idiot sometimes) it's weird that there havent already been some physical reprecussions as well. All in all, i do still think tgere is potentional for SIU to delever on but that failed fridging really just crumbled away a little bit of that belief in me.

I understand that people might be annoyed by Khun's development, but honestly, I don't see a problem with him. Khun was never really about power. He is even intentionally nerfing himself by being a lightbearer. Khun was never about power, he is the brain, and it has been showcased numerous times that he does not need power to be an influential character, even when he is hopelessly overpowered. He is, after Bam, the most influential character in battle at the Nest. He came up with, and flawlessly executed a plan to kill a branch head and helped White gather his powers, which proved to be extremely helpful. And this is how I look at his character. He is the brain. If he decided to nurture his native powers, he would become an extremely powerful spear bearer, but he doesn't. He got powerful arsenal, but all of it is supportive, Enna Core, the Sweet Fish, even White's power. And him suddenly using spells is no problem as well for me. He was helping with one when gathering souls for White, he got White's power (which he might use better in this regard than an Ancient powered Rak and spell destroying Bam) and was with the group when Vicente dispelled the Leviathan spell. For all we know, he might've been talking with Vicente and maybe even took a look in his book. With the White powers, he might be able to access some of them. Khun mught be a dissapointment for some in regard of his powers or how he gains abilities, but many characters get new abilities, and Khun is a character that usually puts the work in. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually got Dumas in a trap and let him "kill him" intentionally. He saw how Bam reacts to deaths of his friends, he may even be hoping Bam would go into a rage to help him fight Dumas. That's Khun in a nutshell, a man with a plan. And I don't mind any ability he gets, because with him, I know he will use the ability in such a fashion nobody else would. Also, some might have a problem with Khun constantly "dying". I get it, first time, second time, we might've been a bit scared, but now, we are sure he is not going to die. And that is the point. He is not the only character who recieves grievous wounds and survives. Just because he cliffhanged us a few times with his death doesn't mean that every time he gets grievously injured now and is persumed dead by someone is bad writing. But I wouldn't blame anyone who calls it a plot armor, because frankly, it is. But as I said, for all we know, he himself might be aware that he is pretty hard to kill and might even use it to his advantage.

While I am having some problems with season 3, personally have not had a problem with khun coming back to life, thank you for articulating what I internally understand but don't know how to say! I don't care that they aren't dying, I just think it would be good for the plot if there was a pause between the high action as we've had it constantly since they fought in the nest with no breaks to help us understand what is happening. The fighting is too flashy and I don't want to constantly see it.

The only way Khun can keep going on with the fire sweetfish long time, is if he accepts his ice capability. He needs to balance fire and ice as yin and yang. Also, that both Baam and Khun can are involved in spells, makes future interesting collaborations possible. If Rak moves into Defender position and Khun into Spearbearer it could also develop their character further.

In simple words yes, he is the biggest problem with tog right now. Khun represents all the worst aspects of the story from having no character development (or even regression) to getting shoe horned in situations he should actually be smoked in. He randomly uses spells out of nowhere , gets revived for the nth time and siu expects us to be shocked by that. Khun and rak need to die. You might make the argument that they are the main character and all that but they have literally not gotten an ounce of character progression for the past 400 chapters You cannot expect people to be patient after 600 chapters. They have waited enough, its a siu problem with making one of the most popular characters the most hated one🤷

Here's the thing tho, him being dependant on Baam wasn't from nowhere and I expected it. In his flashback, where he met Maria, it's shown that Khun himself puts in no effort for himself, it's why she's there to begin with. He's curious about where she'll go with the goals she has. He wants to be there next to her to witness it. The same thing with Baam, Khun wants to help Baam, he says in S2 that he'll be the one to become the new Family head but that's the only time I can remember, currently, when he mentions a goal for himself rather than someone else's goal. I personally want to see a character development where that dependency becomes a detriment to not just Khun, but to the one he's dependent on and it clicks for him that something gotta change or he gonna be a hindrance rather than an asset. But that's just me. *I'll add more later but that's all I can write atm without jumbling it all up cuz my ADHD brain is going faster than I can type😅.*

I am someone who didn't like the moment, you raise a lot of good points but the one big simple thing that I don't like about it is that he essentially 1 shot Dumas with this ability after Dumas has been built up as being the 3rd strongest Po Bidau. It would be one thing if he just weakened Dumas and then they overcame him with teamwork and Rak dipping his toes into the ancient ability again or whatever. But it was just so sudden and so overpowered, even though Dumas could maybe be considered weakened already he was still destroying branch heads like it was nothing. I think part of what contributes to the dissatisfaction with Khun’s character for me is, not only that he’s able to use the spell without much thought or introspection, but also that the basis for being able to use the spell also stems from previous DXM moments, insofar that alot of the issues with his character and capabilities compound on each other to make it feel like he’s just falling upwards. The problems with how he got the sweetfish initially are already apparent but also the fact that SIU had him just magic himself and Rak over to where Bam/White were reaching the tail end of their fight and help him ( apparently even with how the fight had been going since butterfly mode he still needed help ) leaves a bad taste. I feel they diminished what could’ve been a pretty powerful moment for Bam but also were rewarded for it without contributing virtually anything to the fight since the beginning and exchanged it for a cheap power upgrade that would only be relevant if Khun were to get into more direct fights, which is something I feel his character should not be doing as often. I think one of the closest characters I can think of to providing what he does in the story is Shikamaru from Naruto. Shikamaru’s defining trait is that he’s highly intelligent and skilled at coming up with strategies on the fly based off what he has at his disposal. He himself has Shadow Paralysis jutsu which is the cornerstone of many of his strategies but it’s still just one of many tools. His fights are impactful because he himself doesn’t fight as often as other characters, but when he does, it’s a huge highlight of his character attributes, development and capabilities. He’s not going up against Madara or Pain, he’s going up against powerful opponents that have powers that he can think around and figure out a solution for beating them and because of that, his individual fights end up being more involved and have more moving parts to them. Ever since training in Hidden Floor, from what I can recall, Khun hasn’t really used his Ice Shinsu abilities in any meaningful or memorable way or as part of any strategy to take anyone down instead he’s been relying heavily on the sweetfish that just magically appeared when he was supposed to die and he hasn’t come much closer to understanding its nature or how he can directly take advantage of it even. We don’t see him directly analyzing White’s power as he’s giving him the souls or anything that would highlight his character archetype as an intelligent combatant or strategist, the spell is just something that he can do now because Bam would have gotten captured otherwise. If it would’ve taken another chapter for Khun to figure out an exploit in Dumas’ attacks or in the chapter before was using his lighthouse to analyze Dumas’ armor or thought of a way to use White’s spell as the fight was happening, it would feel alot better having him in this kind of environment.

I'm just kind of hoping he'll come out of this situation alive, realize he's a liability, hand Baam over to Jinsung/FUG to watch over him while he continues to climb normally or go through a training arc/acceptance arc. Maybe come in contact with another Khun who offers to help him.

Bam is an irregular and has been through tons of fights and training (+ absorbed stuff).. The issue with Khun and Rak is they just got stuff almost out of nowhere.. and start being able to fight vs high rankers (rak).. These guys were like C rank not long ago.. Like B or A ranks should be decimating them.. let alone branch heads/high rankers What fights or training did Rak go through? There was like a panel of him training's with data edhuan.. and since then he's chucked his spear from a distance a couple times.. then BAM he gets a new form which can go to to toe with top rankers I have no issue with either getting stronger.. its the manner in which its been done.. it hurts the lore/systems SIU put in place imo

I would wait until we see the drawback of the fish or what will become of it. I still think Khun intelligence is his biggest weapon and trying to find a way to make it work further in the tower is a great sign. He still chose to be a lighbearer because he wanted. He is extremely strong and intelligent for a normal regular at his level without even any power up. I don't think the fish is ''op' but that power belong to a family head , so like that spider big woman who got a shield from traumerei , just getting an item or something from a family head can make a high ranker extremely op.

I not have a problem with his power and role in the story that much but the fact that he not have a character development for 600 chapters is really annoyed me. In hotel arc when they (AA and Rak) met Yuri , Rak ask him like "Didnt black turtle is on Bam side?" or something like that and he replied like "Oh the one who is in Bam side is just us Blahblahblah" and that moment is when I realized that he is just the same character for 600 chapters. All of the journey that he get didnt change anything in him? Compared to Bam who made a lot of friends/allied and he cared them too. Not to mentioned that when Bam met Yuri in hotel arc he just help her and escape together so wtf is AA point of "Not trust anyone except Bam"?😭 He is still a cool character but he really need a character development and I hope we will met Maria soon.

Yeah, hoping a Khun tries to help him get stronger in a way that's self-accepting/makes sense. Let him get a training arc, one we either see or at least hear about, while Jinsung or someone else powerful + smart looks after him for a while.

I've just never really understood people who complain about powerups in this series because external powerups are literally the foundation of the power system in Tower of God. Even shinsu itself is an external power granted by admins or the tower itself (in the case of irregulars). People want to apply a very generic and honestly played out shounen manga criticism to series where it just doesn't apply or make sense. This series has probably at least a dozen different ways to gain power externally without any work. Shinsu, contracts, spells, the blood tamara, beastkin transformations, Wangwang's fangs, firefish, EoB, souls, thryssas, Jahad's blood, etc. We were told by Lero Ro in chapter 9 or something that the tower is not a fair place and that this series is not a shounen manga where you work hard and it pays off. That has never been this series and it never will be. I don't even really fault people who don't like this aspect of the series, but I just don't understand how you get to 600 chapters of a series like this if you dislike that kind of thing to be honest. As for Khun, the part of the firefish has been very consistent. The firefish is able to transfer power and White himself had previously established a connection between his spell and the firefish. Then beyond that as you said, Khun then gained White's power directly via the firefish. White/Hoaqin/Vicente is probably the most knowledgeable spell users we've seen other than Gustang and Luslec, so its not really that shocking. Relying on a spell the way Dumas does has a drawback and this is it, spells cancel out spells as we know and as was reiterated by Urek when he proceeded to instead inefficiently use brute force. So this mostly boils down to people simply not liking what happened more than it not making sense or having no precedence.

I agree with you that the way Khun got his power is the egregious part of it all. The issue with Baam's friends is that their chances for their own character development is lessening because Baam's character and accomplishments. The ppl that gravitate towards Baam is steadily increasing to a point that it ruins any chances for side characters like Elaine, Anak, etc to get shine right now. Personally, the last character moment that was really good for me when it came to the conversation of power was Cha talking to Hatsu. Wish we had more moments like that. Also, I know where not done with this arc yet but how many characters do you think will actually join Baam's side? I'd argue thats whats hurting the progression for characters to get strong naturally rather than random power ups given to them. The only reason its somewhat justified for Baam is because he's an irregular to which I think all irregulars have a unique qualities that are hard to replicate. Baam being a black hole is his unique trait.

Let me be very clear, what khun just did can NOT in any way be justified by anything other than SIU's complete disregard for his own established lore, power scaling and worldbuilding. Khun as a character has been very stagnant ever since rachel blew up his heart. How many times do you want a fakeout death with this character? I'm sick of it, either kill him off or stop putting him in stupid and dangerous situations where he is going to die and the plot is going to bend over itself to keep him alive.

These guys are/we're basically C rankers.. We saw how when Karaka/Yuri fought that people from bams team were in big time danger just from being in proximity of the fight It breaks SIU lore (ranking system) that these guys went from that to beating branch head or killing high rankers.. with very little (on screen) training or even fights Power them up sure.. its the manner in which it's been done that MOST people seem to have issue with

In my opinion, yes khun has severely fallen as a main character, especially with all these cool new characters. However, let us leave khun aside for a moment, even with SIU struggling with what to do with him, and killed him 2-3 times already, and providing him with all these different powers that he doesn't use, we know at least that he is important to the story to link bam to the 10 families, especially the Khun family. Also, he is trying to help bam so we will let it pass. HOWEVER, if we want to talk about a useless BS below the rank of 100 best characters in tog let's talk about the most worthless character ever… RAK. I hate that alligator with my SOUL.. rak did nothing in the past 8903 episode but constantly complained and repeated that he is the leader blah blah blah, I know that SIU is struggling with him I know that and I don't understand why he is insisting on keeping that BS in every chapter instead of getting rid of him for good or using him to his fullest to not be a burden to the MC development anymore!!! We are already in a massive war with two of the head's families coming to each other’s nick and not to forget that the jahad army is there with fugs and urek.. etc yet our main characters are full of bs.

Because Killua had a one of the best character development and start to make friends and show some emotion for them while AA is just the same character for 600 chapters. Khun's growth kind of reminds me of punctuated equilbrium (sorry to be nerdy), its concept that evolution or rate of change is gradual or very slow then suddenly speeds up greatly and then slows down a lot in cycles. Some examples follows. This happens often with technology, wheel existed many years before widespread use due to manufacturing limitation and then everywhere. Iron and steel weapons existed based on meteors long before wide adoption, then boom everywhere. In evolution, you see this with virus spreads, evolution went crazy when jaws first appeared on fish, and many other times. This is because randomly big breakthroughs happen, pieces suddenly fit together, new openings open up, and/or increased pressure. I am not against drastic big change, it just needs to have everything collapse into place just right as it does happen in real-world. Even on personal level, people do get big breaks or breakthroughs
