Legoland Malaysia is one of the newer Legolands in the world, having opened its doors to the public in 2012. But even though it's new, the park has a long and interesting history.
The idea for Legoland first came about in 1968, when Danish architect Ole Kirk Christiansen decided to create a model village made entirely from LEGO bricks. At the time, LEGO was still primarily known as a children's toy, so Christiansen hoped that his model village would attract more families and help promote LEGO as a creative tool for all ages.
LEGOLAND soon became a huge success, with visitors coming from all over the world to see its amazing displays. In 1972, Christiansen opened the first LEGOLAND theme park in Billund, Denmark. More parks followed over the years, including one in Windsor, England which opened just before Legoland Malaysia!
So why did Ole Kirk Christiansen choose Malaysia as the home for Legoland's newest park? It turns out that he had some family ties to Malaysia. His grandfather had actually been born in Penang - and so when it came time to choose a location for Legoland's latest venture, Malaysia was an obvious choice!
The park itself is made up of 7 different 'worlds', each with its own unique theme: Land of Adventure, Miniland USA & Asia Pacific Centre (featuring miniature versions of famous landmarks from around Asia), The Beginning (a section dedicated to younger visitors), Imagination Zone (a place where you can let your imagination run wild), Knights' Kingdom (a medieval-themed area), Pirate Shores (an adventure land filled with pirates and treasure) and Lego City (a bustling metropolis where you can experience life as a Lego citizen).
There are plenty of things to do at Legoland Malaysia - whether you're young or young at heart. You can ride on thrilling roller coasters like The Dragon or The Technic Coaster; take part in interactive shows like 4D Cinema; build your very own Lego masterpiece at one of the many construction areas; or simply wander around and take in all the amazing sights and sounds.
