No it's quite clear from the emails what's happening, even with the excuse of language difference. For Hardware Unboxed, the subsequent emails when Tim pressed them for an explanation, said that the new monitor was NOT performing as well as expected. They were afraid the old one would outshine it, hence the demand to not compare it to the previous model. Combined with the offer of "compensation" for letting them change your review, is VERY clear.

They replied "OK a four star review would OK". I didn't review the item. This was ICStation which I think makes reasonably good stuff. I showed some of the LED arrays on my channel which I purchased and told people I liked them. If I did review the product, I'd probably like it. I just won't promise to give a specific rating. The interaction I had with ICStation really soured my opinion of the seller. By the way, don't trust reviews on Amazon. Especially reviews on ICStation products. One more thing. I'm a RU-vid nobody. It's hard truth I learnt since working at a multination company with a large presence in Asia, eastern and southern Europe. Yes, they may have English as a second, third or even fourth language, but their usage will be different. For example, the Dutch are blunt as hell. They'll tell you straight up if something is bad. I feel like some poor intern is about to be offered up as cannon fodder for this. I can see the press release now. Foreigner working in a Korean app company here. Although my company is tiny compare to LG, but I guess yes you could blame the language barrier for a lot fo problems here. Hiring foreigners is super difficult in Korea, and even though I have encountered a lot of Koreans who can speak good English, writing business emails and doing formal, semi formal business communications are definitely not their strengths. But, of course, it is only one part of the problem, Linus also pointed out other possibilities, which I also agree.

Inexperience played a bigger role than language in this case, I think. The emails contained way too much internal information. Anyone with one or two year experience in any work would have known, i.e. it must have come an intern § junior staff. A more experienced staff would have more skillfully hidden the shaddy internal policies at LG and the scandale would not have been that big .

@@KaaptnIglo Surely that should be the case, but imagine a situation where both the writer and the supervisor know nothing about English and both of them rely on Google Translate to write that email. Companies here reluctant to hire foreigners because we have a quota system here (5 locals : 1 foreigner) and they have to provide higher salaries to foreign employees. Yes LG is a big company, but whether they are willing to go through everything just to hire a foreigner to write English email? I doubt. I also doubt that both the PIC and their supervisor understand everything that was written in English in this matter. Or maybe they just believed that by providing a review sample to an influencers, they would have to comply to the guidelines they provided. Is it a cultural thing? Difficult to say. But most of the sponsored videos on Korean RU-vid are less than fair reviews. You can feel that those content creators are some what bias. That's my own observation tho.

I do not watch Hardware unboxed. However, I would strongly disagree with Linus‘s final statement, that calling LG out might not have been warranted. Manipulation of the media is always a huge problem. Making such attempts - evil spirited or just out of incompetence - public it’s very important and ALWAYS the right thing to do. This fosters trust in the media and also sends a loud and clear message to those who intend to manipulate it: We will not take this. This is not acceptable. The damage to your brand for doing this is greater than the possible gains from manipulation.
@runningwithcat6195
@runningwithcat6195 2 года назад
You have a great point but in reality, the damage to the brand is not greater than the possible gains. What you described is exactly what the big companies do to gain, and whereas it does damage the brand, the people who are already manipulated don't care and will continue to buy their products. I mean, look at Elon Musk. Tweeting about cryptocurrencies and creating so much controversies and hurting his brand, yet Tesla stocks are at its highest point. Same thing with Apple; their ads and business practices are full of trash, yet they have gained 30% in stocks over one year. Also, what you have suggested about making everything public is a dangerous territory that leaves precedence and stereotypes, and it can lead to witch-hunting and borderline McCarthyism, because you are putting faith and fostering trust in the media outlet that YOU deem to be trustworthy, which may not actually be trustworthy, which is literally the state of the US politics today. At the personal level, how would you feel if every time you made a mistake at work, everyone gathered around, called you out and shamed you in public? Because that's what you're suggesting in your comment. LG was in the wrong here in my opinion, but maybe they had their reasons too. Maybe they just couldn't transport all the previous generations of monitors due to the pandemic issues and intercontinental shipment, etc etc, so they're worried that if the new one is advertised too good, no one will buy the previous generation products. Who knows. However, I still think this was a bad business practice for the consumers. However, your suggestion seemed to be at the level of an extremist. I think it is important to be in the neutral as a consumer.
@Bad7Seal
@Bad7Seal 2 года назад
@Running With Cat Are you sur you want to meassure the trust custumors have in a brand soley by the stock price? Sure trust in a brand has an impacton sales and might lead to a higher stock price but there are a lot of other factors. I sugested that whenever a media outlet encounters practices where the subject it is reporting on trys to manipulate said reporting it is always the right thing to report on such practices. How would this transparancy lead to stereotypes and the other bad things you mentioned in this paragraph? No, I did not suggest to shame anyone. Don't put words in my mouth! Also you have to consider the context of the comment. We are not talkin about calling out individual persons. LG is a company. There is a big difference. However, even if we were talking about an indivitual persons mistake: How would anyone learn something and better themselves if nobody would point it out when they make a mistake? An other point you seem to be missing here: LG didn't make a small mistake because someone forgot something. They had teams of lawyers, marketing people, executives, etc. who deliberately developed a way to manipulate media outlets. Thinks like that do not happen by mistake. They happen on purpose. With calculation. Whatever reasons they had. They could have just made those reasons public. They could have realeased a press statement with information about shipping problems due to covid. Then the consumer would have had acurate information about the product and the reasons why some models are late in shipping or whatever. If some customers would have decided to never buy LG again because they had shipping problems during a pandamic it would have been their (stupid) choice. If they were buying an other product it would have been their informed choice. I don't see how sugesting that there is no excuse for manipulating the media coverage of a product so consumers have acurate information to make their choices can be considered "extremist".

Hello. I worked in displays materials for a decade, so I'd like to clarify something about contrast ratio testing. "If you were to turn your backlight all the way down and then test, you might impact the brightest results badly, and not recoup those losses in the darkest results" - it's actually sort of the reverse. Because contrast ratio is the brightest output *divided* by the lowest output, the number is heavily impacted by the smaller number - so much so that the number you measure for "black" is basically the ONLY thing that matters when measuring contrast ratio. Put another way... you could try to double the brightness of "white" and that requires a MASSIVE amount of extra power and design changes to accomplish, because it's a massive change - and if you do it, your contrast ratio will double. Alternatively if you can just get your black to be a tiny bit darker, that's a small change, but proportionally it's a huge impact, and can affect your contrast ratio by orders of magnitude. When you buy monitors or TVs, often companies will quote contrast rations in the *millions* and the typical way this is achieved is by measuring the "white" with everything on the monitor tuned to put as much power into the pixels as possible. They'll measure black by unplugging everything, putting the monitor in a dark room, and ideally measuring it before the monitor has even been turned on once, so the pixel is as dark as it can possibly be.

With regards to "what kind of corporate structure do you have that marketing have no idea how their product compares to the old one?" uh... I worked for a small indie tech company for a while, and once we started to get promising results and funding for our technology the CTO/CEO (it was one person) of the company left to start a new one, and we brought in a new CTO/CEO from a very very large tech company. That CEO proceeded to hire about 20 "marketing" people in an expensive new office in silicon valley, to try and promote the company and our work. The marketing people... weren't technical people at all. There were so many problems. Often, they'd decide what they wanted was for us to develop a product with (specifications) that were massively out of line with what we were currently able to create - and in many situations, purely impossible under the laws of physics as we understood them. Replies from the scientists and technicians working on development to this effect were ignored, we were just told to "make it happen" - and marketing would pass on their bluesky impossible stats to agencies and media as accurate representations of what we were going to be releasing. After all, they'd told the scientists to make the thing, so of course that was what they were going to release. So... yeah... This thing can absolutely happen if your marketing team doesn't have scientists or technicians in it.

This is the first thing I thought of and is most obvious explanation. Linus had to do allot of mental gymnastics to try to reconcile that LG didn't want their new monitor compared to the old model, because LG thought the new model was so much better, then suddenly not much better than the new model. It is much more plausible that LG didn't want the comparison made because it would not be favorable to the new model. Rather than LG's explanation to Linus, that it would hurt the sales of a monitor which almost certainly will have reached the end of is production run and is also no longer in stock. The theory that the new model didn't test as well as what LG were expecting and that LG didn't know about this when when asking reviewers not to make a comparison between old and new models, I don't buy it. I think Linus was either a bit naive, or didn't want to go down the rabbit hole that somebody at LG had lied to him.

LG marketing is trying to really hard to keep products across their product line relevant. It’s important to keep old products relevant but not completely outshine new products. All needs to be done without pushing a customer to a competing brand. Sennheiser did a terrible jobs with this now they sold their entire consumer audio line to another company. They are gone now and there is a good chance the quality will go with them. Point in case you are both wearing Sennheiser headphones that are a 10-20 YEAR old model/design. I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both of them are actually 10+ year old purchase. Point is you can have a product that is “too good” from that point only marketing can even distribute sales with the respect to maintaining profit.

It's so obious that they didn't want the comparison because the new one is worse. It's not uncommen. It kinda applies to every new apple product. They don't want you to buy the old stuff for half the price, they want you to bay a lot for features that don't matter.

Linus, sound like you don't know how a large corporation's management structure works and how much each layer actually understands at how much detail. How details are funneled to them. Look at how intel had talked about their tech over the years.

Unboxing made a mistake I think. When I tech reviewed (it has been a long while), it was not uncommon to get "recommendations" or even "wishes" from the supplier/reviewee - and that is OK because I could always say "so-an-so recommends...." - honesty is all that really matters in reviews. Embargoes are just part of the game - but they were agreed upon in advance -- ALWAYS - you can't change them after the fact and companies know this - LG knows this (I mean LTT even entertaining a misunderstanding here is reaching). HOWEVER - never would a company tell us (or me) how we must do anything or what to say or EVER offer compensation* if we said what they wanted or did what they said. That is an ad - not a review [Sponsored vids are OK as long as folks know if the sponsorship effects the review - but that is a different thing - a showcase like he said]. That (paying for a cooperative review) is what LG is trying here regardless of language barrier and they know it. Sure....there is a cultural barrier. They need to get over it - the rest of the world is not their culture, but it is their market. This is not a new game. *Sometimes companies would let you keep the review product after testing. This was not discussed in advance in my experience and never seemed to be coupled to the actual review. And yes.....we got black-balled from certain products from a certain company (Corsair [yes - you got called out]) for a poor review - which is their legit right if they they think you are not reviewing them fairly (though we did). As a review site you have to be prepared for that....they (Unboxing) never should have even asked about it IMO. **Private reviews I have done and they are exclusivity for compensation - but not released to the public....that's really the only time I think "pay is OK". Just in my old guy opinion.

@@Draugo Lol - what would help? A new paragraph at "*"? This isn't exactly a word-processor we use. To be honest, I gave up long ago on anyone actually caring. Just occasionally I feel the itch to comment. Actually considering folks reading it is a different thing. Anyways - if you think it matters - I'll keep it in mind.

I don't know why it's so hard to understand why LG makes such decisions. It can be their stock levels of produced (previously and currently) materials that they are trying to manage or it can be whatever. How is this even a thing? It seems perfectly fine that they strategize and send message out so that things work out for them as smoothly as possible. Either way, reviewers are basically businesses and it's a business relationship. You should respect the other side unless it's some crazy stuff like making you promote sales of defective goods. Reviewing "businesses" seem quite spoiled nowadays I guess.

I don't know but the more I watch this the more I'm convinced that Luke is riding along with this weak bs Linus is on for a paycheck. Linus's attempt to be the authority on how multi-billion $ companies should behave is funny and entertaining. It's like he's hearing voices telling him that the entire You tube world is awaiting his take on this subject. What have you become Linus? And your thumbnails depicting an emotional response to the clipart pasted to your right, well.... haven't seen that before.
