I log all my HF and UHF/VHF simplex contacts. I use QRZ, LOTW, and a paper logbook. I've been a ham a little over a year and just filled up my first logbook. (One of the small ARRL logbooks. I like the small ones because they're just so convenient.) My QRZ log has 743 contacts with 456 confirmed. (All voice.) Pretty good confirmation rate, I think. 🙂 73! - KQ4CM

I have a written log of all my contacts, mostly CW, but more importantly, I log my times of operation. I read about a ham who was accused of interfering with a neighbors medical equipment and the ham was shut down. I keep a record of my times, band, rig, antenna and power, as evidence, in case of those kind of situations.

I agree with the recommendation not buy any ham gear until you're licensed. You should first concentrate on passing the exam. Then when you do pass, go out and celebrate by buying your first HT (at the least). You'll be motivated more this way to get on the air! 73! N7YMZ

After too many crashes and lost logs I only use a written log book now.

One of the biggest reasons I keep a log is because of bootlegging or pirating. That is unlicenced people stealing your callsign. If you keep getting QSLs from stations that are not in your logbook which mightp0 be from 1 or 2 a week or 4 or more a month, then it's probable that your call sign is pirated or bootlegged. Recently I have been suspicious of this. I log online with LoTW, QRZ, EQSL, and Club Log. I've been getting a fair number of unconfirmed QSLs on two of the sites. This is indicative of pirating/bootlegging. I'm staying off the air for a few weeks to see if I keep getting QSLs.
