Louisville has been seeing an increase in crime in recent years. It's not all due to the pandemic as Louisville was seeing an increase in crime during the years that lead up to the pandemic. None-the-less, Louisville is historically segregated, and the poverty has historically settled on the westside of town, and we all know that poverty and high unemployment rates encourages high crime rates.
Here's the video on the Dixie Hwy and Hill Street investigative report that I reference around 35:00:
• An undercover look at ...

I have been in the West End delivering for something like 17 years. I skipped around the video pausing here and there and recognized where you were instantly. The West End is what you get out of it. Louisvillians that don't live there, but talk about crime in the West End, remind me of where I lived as a kid, Miami FL during the cocaine 80's. Apparently I was in the murder capital of America and didn't even know it. Why? Because I wasn't a drug dealer and didn't do crime. Same with the West End of Louisville. If you don't deal/do/pursue/buy/sell drugs, then the West End is just like any other poorer part of America. It's a real shame because the people are great. I have had the opportunity to deliver elsewhere, but I don't because I prefer the people (my customers) in the West End.

You missed he historic Broadway Temple AM.E. Zion Church at 13th and Broadway which was designed by African-American architect Samuel Plato. He build the church facing Broadway at a time when African-Americans were not allowed to have Broadway addresses. As a result, he added a side entrance to give the church a 13th Street address. Only in recent years has the church claimed its Broadway address.

I lived in Portland back in the 70's and The West End was a little rough but nothing like this at all. It was Integrated, and a pretty nice place to live. All the neighborhood kids played on their block, and I mean we all played on the entire block, and the parents looked after every kid in their block group. If you did something wrong, 9 times out of 10, your Mom or Dad would know about it before you got home. I lived on the corner of 31st & NW Parkway, in front of the flood wall, opposite the K&I Bridge. Portland elementary was a revolutionary School at the time, and I went to Shawnee High for a bit before we had to Leave Ky back in the late 70's during the Recession. No work could be found in Louisville, and my parents moved us to Texas because it's economy was booming. Those old turn of the Century Homes are really nice and something to look at. My Grandmother was a writer for the Portland Newspaper, and she also owned a ceramics shop on Portland Ave. I lived there and my family got caught up in the bad Tornados that hit the city in 74, and Portland was evacuated because a Chlorine Barge ran aground and had a gant chlorine gas cloud escape. We left KY / Portland right after the Sewers exploded, after Ralston Purina blew up the city with Hexane Gas in the sewers. They blew up 2 miles of streets, roughly 200 square city blocks. They blew all the manhole covers into the air, and in some areas they blew up the entire streets. And we had a great blizzards of 1977 & 1978. That blizzard was quite impressive for us kids.

I think you missed out on some key point that would've been nice for this section. You could've driven through Shawnee and Chickasaw Parks. These as well as several other parks you mentioned are Olmstead Parks. Louisville has one of the largest collections of these historic parks. These were designed by the Frederick Law Olmstead Firm, which is the same company responsible for Central Park in NYC. The Parkways in Louisville were designed to link these parks together and as you notice in the east in have some of the larger, nicer homes. You can even find nice home on the Pkway in the West side as you notice with Algonquin, Southwestern and Northwestern Pkwys. Chickasaw was one of only two parks available to African Americans when the city segregated the parks in the late 1800's and didn't desegregate till the 1950's! That's another irony, unlike much of the south, Louisville parks were not originally segregated, they became segregated later. Chickasaw is where Ali used to run to from his home to do his training and back and you might have noticed a placard there mentioning this if you went. Across from Chickasaw is Plato Commons, these homes were built and designed by Sammuel Plato for black people who had few residential choices back in the 40's I believe. Also, the homes by Shawnee are just beautiful and would've made some great scenery for your video. I had relatives who lived in both of these communities growing up. Shawnee is actually going through some gentrification now as there are some mansions there and many of the homes are just as nice as the ones you saw in the eastern section of the city, just not as well maintained for obvious reasons.

Because your parents are so embarrassed they won't permit it - I see - I reckon that's a viable excuse - I don't blame em
@Keonny77
@Keonny77 2 года назад
@@davidrice3337 you don't know the situation of every african american... so you? You don't know the situation of the majority of african americans do you? Here's a clue.. it only takes a few bad yards and situations to affect an entire community. So if the majority of yards are taken care of... with some that are not... that's an affect. It only takes one abandoned house or foreclosure to affect all the values of a community. What you are dealing with is a concentration of poverty. Poverty breeds all these things. Between 20 to 30% of African Americans live at or below poverty in contrast to less than 12% of whites and in some states its less than 10%. That's all by design and not happenstance. The African Americans you know and socialize with probably so not live under the poverty line... Keeping up a yard ain't cheap... even if you do the work yourself. I own my own home and that's an additional bill i have to deal with and as i am a homeowner who understand poverty values in relation to wealth...i gladly take on that responsibility...and i thankfully have the additional income to do this. But look at the people who are renting and barely able to pay their essential bills. My aunt lives in the Westend. Our fault has owned the house since the mid 70s. She has done the work to increase vakue..adding rooms, redoing bathrooms and kitchens...two nearby homes the owners died and the homes attracted vagrants... she had to call the city and get them to chase off the vagrants... you probably have never had to deal with that. Look at the bigger picture... and dig deeper.

The area suffers from generational poverty related to segregation. Much of it dates to the great 1937 flood that inundated the West End. Those who could afford to move out did and many were not able to live elsewhere due to racial redlining. I taught students from this area and found a lot of positive energy here that you don’t perceive by simply driving through.

I take it you are a teacher - I work in the horse industry and I interact with people from a dozen different countries on any given day - People segregate themselves - Ask anyone who works in the penal system - Forced desegregation ruined not only JCPS but also the southwest portion of Jefferson County - and the West End as well - I there isn't any neighborhood familial bonds which were prevalent when I was growing up in the 70s into the 80s There are over 300 people making over 100,000$ who's job is administrative in nature - The bus fleet is one of the largest in the nation - Bussing forced my parents to move over to Elizabeth Indiana - I was crushed as a kid but I thank God everyday I'm over here and only have to work in Louisville- I know people who literally live 15 minutes from the bridge and they can count on one hand how many times they've been across - why ? Because Louisville has become a typical downtrodden city - I stopped a car hacking about 2 mos ago on Dixie hwy - thankfully I had my legal firearm and I saved an elderly Africans American women from further physical harm and her car wasn't stolen - I have a friend who grew up in Farmington hills michigan and she talks about how Louisville mirrors Detroit and not in a good way - Recently our once great newspaper wrote an article suggesting forced desegregation actually harmed the Black community - I wrote them an editorial and I pointed out the fact the number 1 proponent of this failed policy was - you guessed it - the Bingham family - and they owned the newspapers back then - It makes my blood boil when I drive thru PRP and Valley Station - The Jerry Abramson's and the Dave Armstrong's and the Harvey Sloan's of the world has done a great job of ruining a once proud area - now it's got an abandoned walmart for a centerpiece

@@davidrice3337 Bussing did not force your parents to do anything they chose to do it because they did not want to integrate. They were/are racist like many others. Segregation was/is racist. People don't chose to be denied housing, medical services, food amd general accomodations. That is what segregation was. My grandmother only had access to the colored hospital to deliver her children... the other hospitals in Louisville outside of the red cross were segregated. She also didnt want to live in the substandard housing in shelby park she rented..but that all that was available for her. My relatives still remeber not being allowed to go to shawnee park or being chased away from algonquin manor... for no reason other than being black. And that was a lot of white people that felt the exact same way across the country. The issue is not integration the issue is that we have a generation a country that was built off a racism and robbed one group of wealth while simultaneously building up the wealth of another group but most people don't want to talk about that they only want to talk about individual personalized choices and ignore the fact that they live in a privileged group that is supported by the US government and has been for many years now. Racism has not gone away it did not disappear it just metamorphosized into what we're seeing now. There is no way you can discuss wealth and poverty or economics in this country and not discuss race they go hand-in-hand with each other. My relatives live in the West End and worked all their life and done everything right but simply because it is the West End of the impoverished black community and they do not have the same amenities and privileges as all the people on the other part of the city people that have the money go you go when they have the ability to. My grandmother's or grandparents all bought their homes in the West End in the 1970s and the property values did not increase that much that is by design my last grandmother recently died about 2 or 3 years ago she bought her home in the shawnee neighborhood and when the family sold it it was only about 80 or $70000 they were able to get out of it the same home in the East of Louisville would have been worth over 200000 maybe even 3.... There are nice parts of the west end. If you aren't too afraid... you should do a sold guided tour.. yes nw parkway is one example...but so are other areas that are coming back.
