Is Making Money Bad as a Spiritual Person?

Is making money bad if I'm a spiritual person? This is often a question we ask ourselves because, particularly in spiritual circles, people can sometimes frown on anything to do with making money or taking care of yourself. They can think negatively about earning a living. However, Rupert suggests that this is an inverted egoic attitude. It is the ego masquerading as spiritual understanding.
Rupert wholeheartedly suggests that money is the currency of love. You do what you love, you earn money from it and you spend it on what you love. In our culture, money is the form of currency that enables this flow of love.
Money is not inherently bad, it is neutral. If it is used in the hands of the ego, we all know what that looks like. But that is not inherent in money, it is inherent in the ego.
It is a beautiful thing to use abundance to take care of yourself financially. And if you have an excess, to take care of others too.
Taking care of yourself financially is entirely consistent with the non-dual understanding.
This clip was taken from Rupert's In-Person Retreat at the Mercy Center between October 24-31, 2021.

Why should the people carrying out the highest form of teaching in this life, benefit and love comfortably...ehy should they be penniless. After self realization i stumbled upon "ask and it is given" works too effortlessly from ones heart. Like an innocent child ones heart manifests things onto the world canvas as Brahman itself 🦚 This type of ease is counterintuitive to the linear thinker to whom every choice has an opposite potential and its a never-ending calculation of right and wrong... Exhausting 🥺. I am finding cultivation of bhakti 💌 to be best addition to life post realization. If "no thing ultimately has meaning" why not spend life in the quality of joy? I have deep gratitude and appreciation for Rupert and this particular transmission 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Life just reminded me that good things are ok ❤️ Thats a huge one!!!! All of us deserve to ride out the love of God. And this love can be invoked from the Self in the same way we reach into the heart of Self for peace or neutrality and wisdom. World did stop existing at zero point but it also keeps spinning at the same time & it is best to enjoy it. ❤️🙏🏽 Stay hydrated on the carousel 🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠 one love 🙏🏽

Well said Rupert...Money is energy too. There is nothing less spiritual about it...only what ones does with it and how they use it. Money by itself has no real power. Its our ideas around it that lends it power...ofcourse talking abt it in the 'how much to earn n how to spend' context. When we understand 'living in abundance' and live that way at our thought n action lvl...then money is never an issue. What you need will come to you the moment you want but... one must think, feel n act like a millionaire who never for a moment doubts if they can afford an object worth a dime....even the thought must not arise. Similarly, shunning it and never wanting to do anything with it is a fear based mentality of not fammiling in the money trap.. n generally keeps one poor n bioused. Resistance never goes well with abundance.

There exist no “spiritual persons”. Only awareness is. Abiding in pure consciousness has nothing to do with making or not making money. Furthermore, there are no persons. The Self always is and yet people get wrapped up in spiritual jargon and the promise of a future enlightenment. That’s still mind games.. Self is found in silence anytime. Thoughts and mind chattering including any sort of questions to teachers come and go. What remains? There are no spiritual teachers either in fact.
@Mat-cm6he
@Mat-cm6he 2 года назад
Transmission of knowledge is possible only in silence. All these questions keep perpetrating the I-thought. Thoughts can fluctuate in awareness, that’s not an issue per se but the problem is pretending an answer from a teacher or believing that you’re the thinker. Stop asking questions and be still. Who believes? Who’s this I who’s posing a question? It’s a thought. Wake up. There’s no I. Once you see your Self clearly, you’re done. Do whatever you please in life it doesn’t really matter. Certainly you’ll be at peace because the idea “I am the body” will be gone.

“What is money and why are most people deeply uncomfortable about it in one way or another?” “It is a touchy question because money is not what it appears to be. Money is more deep-rooted. Money is not just there outside in currency notes, it is something to do with your inner, your mind and attitudes. Money is your love of things; money is your escape from people; money is your security against death; money is your effort to control life; money is a thousand and one things. Money is not just concerned with currency notes; otherwise, things would have been very easy. Money Is Your Love - Love of Things, Not of People. “The most comfortable love is of things, and because things are dead, you can possess them easily. You can possess a big house, a palace - you can possess the greatest palace easily - but you cannot possess even the smallest baby. Even babies reject, even babies fight for their freedom. A small baby, however small, is dangerous for the man who wants to possess him. He will become rebellious and he will rebel, but he will not allow anybody to possess him. People who cannot love other people, start loving money because money is a means to possess things. “The more money you have, the more things you can possess; the more things you can possess, the more you can forget about people. You will have many things, but you will not have any contentment because deep contentment comes only when you love a person. The money will not revolt, but it will not respond either, that’s the trouble. “That’s why miserly people become very ugly (nobody has ever responded to their love. How can you be beautiful without love falling on you, without love showering on you like flowers - how can you be beautiful? You become ugly. You become closed. A man who possesses money, or tries to possess money, is miserly and will always be afraid of people because if they are allowed to come close to him, they may start sharing. If you allow someone to come close you, you also have to allow some sharing. People who love things become like things - dead, closed. Nothing vibrates in them, nothing dances and sings in them; their hearts have lost the beat. “They live a mechanical life. They drag, burdened, burdened with many things. They don’t have any freedom because only love can give you freedom, and love can give you freedom only if you give freedom to love. Money is good - money can be used “People who are afraid of love become possessive about money. People who love become non-possessive, money doesn’t matter so much. If it is there, it is okay, it can be used. If it is not there, that too is okay because love is such a kingdom that no money can purchase it. Love is such a deep fulfillment, you can be a beggar on the street and you can sing if you have love in your heart. If you have loved and you have been loved, love crowns you, make a king of you. Money simply makes you ugly. I am not against money. I am not saying to go and throw it away because that is another extreme. It is also the last step of the miserly mind. A man who has suffered too much because of money, who has clung to money and has not loved anybody or become open, in the end, becomes so frustrated that he throws away the money, renounces and goes to the Himalayas, enters a Tibetan monastery and becomes a lama. This man has not understood. If you understand, money can be used. People who don’t understand are either misers - they don’t use the money - or they renounce the money because in renouncing it they are also saving the same mind. Now there will be no difficulty in using it; you renounce it all and escape. But they cannot use the money, they are afraid of using it.”

It is not really self protection, it is self care. This struck home for me how vested I have been in not being loving or caring with myself. Care equal loving equals money. I find I see not enough money and suffer in that place aa familiar as it is, as habituated as it is. I find a hanging on to the concept of feeling unworthy of love, my love. Do I care enough, that I I speak of an ego I an I defined in separation defined in not enough, defined in protecting its life of separation. A deeper I is where I must go, I see this intellectually yet my heart seems disengaged from it.

"Money is a fact of your life; you cannot escape it. You will have to contend with it at least to some degree, even if you assume a very ascetic existence. It is a practical necessity in your life. It presents its own problems, many of which you can avoid and some of which are unavoidable. Money is a resource to which people give great meaning and significance. Money, then, is not the problem. It is the use of money. Here you must look at your motives, your nature and your preparation. Your motives with money will determine how you perceive it, what qualities you attribute to it, how you arrange it in the priorities of your life and what you attempt to do with it. Your nature will determine your predispositions and will color to a very great degree how you perceive money and what role you feel it will play and should play in your life. Your preparation is very important because this will determine how mature you are in your dealing with this resource and how and for what purpose you attempt to use it. Therefore, there is your motive, there is your nature and there is your preparation. The more prepared you are and the further advanced you are in The Way of Knowledge, the more you will use money as a resource and not attempt to use it to build your survival or well-being, your position in society or any advantages you are seeking to claim over others." People may say this wonderful or useful but another things here that is not to taken lightly not mentioned by the speaker is about "attachment", to think or to wish something with such spans of goal always create attachment and the way Rupert says that to comfort the woman of having that thought is good but he also should elaborate on not getting into attachment, especially if one want to really walk in this path of spiritual growth, so one can be always free, no "hidden" motive and have the desire as a positive things but as we know the egoic nature of human would be at its best when it has its place during the years of acquiring money, i believe personally if one really want to grow spiritually, another thing to consider is to not have a prolonged sense of attachment of this kind energy which we called MONEy

We all have to live and take care of ourselves. Money is the “agreed” form to go around. Some make more money than others, but we can “agree” not to let “others” starve in poverty. In other words a truly social system. Not a system where the philanthropists do their hand-outs. At the same time you can “enjoy” your spirituality diving into the ocean of awareness. When you come up you still have to go to the supermarket to buy stuff for supper. For me spirituality is every day life and that includes money. Having said that I must add that I don't seem to need a 10 million yacht to dive into mentioned ocean 😊.

Whether in Spiritual world or the material world... one needs to make sure that his & family life is comfortable inorder to do the things one loves. Other wise there will more hindrances to achieve the thing you love (e.g God/Self realization in case of spirituality) Balance is the key. Money itself is not bad. It's the selfish desire to earn more than your needs/ comforts that is bad.
@longface7833

As Rupert says, the surplus can go towards things you love. I don't think it is inherently selfish to "earn more than your needs/comforts". If that money is earned with love and gives people something they value or love in some way, and the surplus is spent on love... how can that be bad? The selfish desire to earn and hoard wealth at the expense of all others (and maybe use that wealth for control/manipulation against people's own best interests) may be what you are thinking of instead.

Rupert, what is divine grace? What do think of Ramakrishna and his experiences and teachings? His experiences with the non-dual teacher Tota Puri? What is it that brings Counciousness back into itself? Why do the great bhaktas experience states of ecstatic bliss? Really, just what is grace? So many self realized brings say that effort is needed at the beginning and then God meets some people half way and graces then with awakening. Gurus can awaken people by their very touch and presence. With Tota Puri the non-dual guru of Ramakrishna, he had an experience where he realizes that Maya, Shakti, divine mother was truly in charge and nothing can happen outside of divine will. What is that which allows people to come to God or keeps them blinded by Maya? I understand that what that is is one with us, it is us, and it's beyond human language and the limited understanding of the finite mind but still there's seems to be an intelligence there directing the lila. Saints like Neem Karoli Baba, Amma, Anandamayi Ma speak as if there's an intelligence as well guiding the play. Even Nisgardatta Maharaj seemed to give great value to his guru as the reason he came to realize the self. Why do that when you have realized the sameness between you and the guru unless their was an understanding of grace? What is grace? When I look it up, this is the definition of Gurus grace-. The Yogic path of guru's grace is known as gurukrupayoga, and it is thought to be the most rapid form of spiritual progress. Devotees can only advance on this path if the guru wills them to do so, and this willingness is also known as the guru's grace. The guru can offer this grace through eye contact, a sacred word, thought or touch of the third eye, but only if the devotee is thought to be karmically ready. This even refers to the will of the guru which is obviously divine will but still it implies an intentionality of God. What is that?

There is the practical individual question of money as a necessity, and there is the question of money in itself and its net effect on the world. It is not correct to say that money is an inert substance that merely reflects the choices of the "free" agent that uses it, just as smart phones are not merely "tools" to streamline our daily lives. Money has a normative effect on the individual and society. If one looks at any problem, any source of conflict in the world and asks "why?" enough times, the answer will always come down to money. One reason this could be is that we have designed money as interest bearing debt. Unlike these enlightened masters living continually in the "moment", money is always in the future and forces us to do the same. Money is an IOU, a promise to pay in the future. This allows and incentivizes a cycle of endless growth and speculation because there is always less money in circulation than there needs to be. This imbalance is necessary to drive the economy "forward" and necessarily results in the commodification of more and more of the world, from raw material into "goods and services" ad nauseum, ad infinitum. It is a mistake to characterize this as a "choice" per se , since most people simply have to adapt to the conditions they find themselves and "provide for their families". The indigenous people in the Amazon who lived for millennia without money suddenly find themselves in a "world economy" which cannot see the rainforest as anything other than "raw material", "potential farm land" , "potential this, or potential that. So they are forced to either fall in line or face extermination. To me this is the antithesis of everything that Rupert seems to be advocating which is to "live and let live".
@filip5
@filip5 2 года назад
I follow you up to a point. I think that even when there is no money there is time. If your community trusts you with what you love to do in service of your community, it means you can't do other stuff. As Rupert said it's like doing the necessary shopping for tonight's diner. The problem with our implementation of money now is that the decision who to hand it out is not based on this love and service but on the calculation how much profit it will bring again in terms of money. So there is never a point where money serves something else than itself. And yet it is possible even today to use money as it should be used, for love and service. In fact this kind of use would contribute to its transformation into a more sane system. And so I agree with Rupert that not money is the problem, even with today's design, but the use of it. Correct use will lead to redesign...
@danielroyster5736
@danielroyster5736 2 года назад
@@filip5 It seems to me that this is a very optimistic interpretation. While it is not impossible that money can be used for good, it is rather like saying guns can be used to create peace. It is the wrong tool for the job. Or rather, mistaking the problem for the solution. The entire purpose of money is to depersonalize human transactions, to outsource trust and solidarity in the name of efficiency. This creates a society increasingly hostile to human flourishing. We can say that money can be used to reverse this cycle of alienation by "reallocating" the resources to more "life giving" causes, but this ignores the essential properties of money which by nature flow counter to this intention.
@tylerthurman2980
@tylerthurman2980 2 года назад
This was a practical, individual question about the necessity of money to meet personal needs though. The questioner didn’t ask for Rupert’s philosophical musings on the role of money in causing immense human suffering. What exactly is your point? That Rupert, and I guess all spiritual teachers, should renounce money entirely?
@danielroyster5736
@danielroyster5736 2 года назад
@@tylerthurman2980 Yes you are right. I think I was triggered by the thumbnail phrase that "money is the currency of love" because it read as a philosophical generalization which seemed absurd. I think it is the task of every individual to decide where his "interests" begin and end. Ramana Maharshi is famous for saying realizing the self is the ultimate and only "real" objective to life. Whether or not this is true, it is easy to see how those in power would also support the pursuit of individualized "inner" quests, preferably with eyes closed to how things are run.

@@danielroyster5736 again, I follow you but I guess my point is that money is not going to disappear by itself, it will only disappear in its current form by using money the best way it can be used. So of course, the more we can do without money, the better, but for most of us this is not possible, so using it in a way that it is not only directed towards good things, but also towards its own transformation, is also needed. And I don't think this even needs to be done explicitly. In that sense it's like allowing painful emotions. One really has to embrace them, for any plot to seemingly accept them in order to hopefully get rid of them, will only confuse the matter and ultimately not release freedom and joy. I think it's the same with money ...

"You do what you love you earn money from it " Is spreading spirituality work? Is love a commodity, in fact is spirituality a commodity to be traded for cash? A friend yrs ago was devoted to a guru in India. He amassed a large following and material assets. He decided to go into deep meditation (near a fire) for months. She and many others waited for him to come back from this state with more spiritual epiphanies . He walked out on stage and said I'm closing the Ashram and using the assets to help the poor. Go back to your country and do good deeds to those who need it

Money is medium for exchange. Focus not on the money but what is being exchanged. The organism needs to survive. It will need to engage in an activity to meet survival needs unless it's being provided by another organism. "Spiritual Person " is a profile/ user interface created by the organism as an identity.

A question Rupert: Ramana Maharshi says in verse 3 of Upadesa Undiyar that "Niskamya Karma" (Totally selfless action of a fruit or benefit) which is one of the most powerful ways for the purification of the mind, i.e., for example transmitting spiritual teachings without expecting a reward of money in return but doing it solely for the love of sharing or spreading them. In this sense, I can put love in what I do by transmitting a teaching but if I did not expect any reward why would I ask for the payment of money in return? Wouldn't it be more coherent to get the money from other work instead of doing it in exchange for transmitting a teaching that should be for everyone without economic conditions?

This topic is far more complex and people want a new age feel good explanation. Ruperts title for this topic does not help or add clarity. New agers will say money is energy))))) uhhhhh sure everything thing can be described as energy: soil, trees, plants, etc. etc. How does the monetary system actually work never enters into the conversation.Which is similar to not knowing how an engine works but calling it energy. Its naive

Those looking for an answer to this title should read, The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace. Money like everything is neutral. We learn through society, music, uneducated people that money is evil. Reality is, money is a tool that's it, simple as that. Money should never be a goal but a tool to navigate this modern age. You have to be realistic and honest with yourself, it's much easier to do what you want when you have money vs being poor and struggling to survive. Also money does not equate happiness but it certainly does help, ask someone in a low income living check to check if they are happy. We give money a meaning, good or bad, if you see it as evil or as some sort of limitation for spiritual advancement then that's what you'll get.

It's not bad to make money. Although money in itself is bad imho. And the people controlling all of our money (and our lives) are even worse. Capitalism is the worst form of 'living together' as humans in my opinion, because it's based on price not love.
@tylerthurman2980
@tylerthurman2980 2 года назад
How is money in itself bad? It’s just a standardized medium of value so that we don’t have to trade silk for spices or whatever directly. Greedy egos hoarded resources and exploited people long before the invention of money. I mean yeah it would be great if we could all get to a point where we are conscious and loving enough to live in a communal, moneyless society and it’s fine to hold that as an ideal but that is so far off and not helpful to people trying to balance making a living today with their own spiritual understanding.
@moonglow6639
@moonglow6639 2 года назад
@@tylerthurman2980 Yes, I believe that money in itself is bad. Maybe not theoretically but in reality it is. What you say is exactly what our oppressors (the people who control the money) want us to believe. Look at what capitalism has done to humanity...only war and destruction. We as a human species have almost killed our planet earth. We have killed our brothers and sisters, the animals, in the name of profit. The remaining birds in the rainforest now sing the songs of chainsaws. Money is a tool for oppression only, it was not invented for trading by the people. The problem is that people do not realize how they are being robbed and exploited. They still think that money is a good thing. But what do we really own in capitalism ? Nothing. Pieces of paper that can be devalued over night by the central banks and governments. We own nothing. And we have forgotten how to live at all. Most people couldn't survive a single day in nature, outside this cruel system. Humans only need one resource in capitalism: money. Not food, shelter, clothes and so on, just money. This is a very dangerous situation. I doubt that humanity, or even this planet, will survive this century. There is a famous quote by Jean Jaures (french socialist leader): "Capitalism carries war within it, just like clouds carry rain." I think this is very true.

We all need money to operate in the physical realm. If one is spiritual therapist of some sort, and that is what you do, you have a living to make, so charging is a no-brainer. The difficulty can come when one faces the temptation to convince clients that they need more therapy or teaching. That's where it can get dodgy. Keeping the karma squeaky clean is a job in itself.
