Is Mega Man Maverick Hunter X The BEST Remake Of All Time?

There is a certain irony to me making a new video on Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X. Technically, I discussed this game back in my review on X1 from 2016, and in the spring of 2018, I did a whole video on the game to make up for it, one where I laughed at how bad my 2016 portion was. But…the 2018 video was literally audio I recorded at like 3:30 in the morning while suffering from a cold, truly the worst thing you could possibly do for a video. But luckily, I am not as arrogant as to make fun of old work while being a goof in a completely different fashion anymore…I think? As I have said before, I don’t see the harm of the re-review. If you think you’ve grown and have more to say/want to do a more definitive job…I say, why not?

I wouldn't go that far, but it is more enjoyable than I think most people would expect. By this point X's actor had become more natural-sounding with his portrayal, and I always enjoyed who I affectionately refer to as "Surfer Zero" from this age, although his modern actor does a fine job as well. X sounds genuinely pissed off at everything Sigma's done by the end of the game, and it sells the story even though the still images aren't as effective in that regard. Some of Dr. Light's dialogue is genuinely moving because of his delivery as well; old bastard had me getting misty-eyed at parts.

As for the origin of Sigma's scars, the MHX version makes more sense than the X4 version. After getting disfigured by Zero and repaired at Hunter HQ, it seems a bit silly to think that Sigma would tell the medics/mechanics, "Thanks for fixing me up fellas, but leave the scars, I actually like them." This is especially so since Sigma planned, whether earnestly or not, to continue leading the Maverick Hunters. After he is outed by X and Zero at the end of "Day of Sigma", Sigma has no reason to care about maintaining the valiant image of the Maverick Hunter commander. The scars are a mark of pride, for they symbolize the first step he took towards facilitating reploid evolution that day. Hence why he keeps them throughout all future conflicts from then on.
@matthewkuscienko4616
@matthewkuscienko4616 2 года назад
There's also the fact that they were shown to have been caused by literally ripping the skin off of his robotic face in X4, and they weren't even at that. Either way, I think your explanation makes a lot of sense in context
@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853
@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 2 года назад
Though your explanation makes sense, I still think the X4 version could be justified with a bit of conjecture. Since Sigma was slowly becoming a Maverick after his fight with Zero, that would have affected his psychology to the point where he may well have chosen to keep his scars. Remembering how powerful Sigma's stated to be, it's likely he never lost a battle before entering Dr. Wily's lab - thus, the damage he sustained while fighting Zero, combined with his exposure to the Maverick virus affecting his judgment, would have led to his obsession with Zero and his origins. In that case, Sigma may well have opted to keep his scars as a constant reminder to himself about Zero, almost like a religious rite. Keep in mind, all Sigma's later bodies have the scars too; he has no reason to include these scars on his new bodies unless they serve some kind of purpose to him - to reinforce to himself that he must find out how to gain Zero's power.

Honestly, I've always regarded Day of Sigma as still canon. With that, I always figured Sigma did get his iconic scars but did get them fully repaired since he was still a good guy at the time and never bothered to get the scars fixed after Day of Sigma for the much the same reasons you said while also me thinking that he simply didn't really have the time to fix because y'know *revolution* and it just stuck.

@@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 You know what? It works in both "time lines". Sigma from the classic series is a madman or well ... mad machine. This guy is the embodiment of evil so being obsessed with Zero makes sense since as we know Zero true form is a God of destruction ... On the other hand, Sigma from this soft reboot, does lean towards evolution of Reploids more than anything and is obsessed with X and his limitless potential. Sigma attempted to destroy Zero with no hesitation which hints to the fact that he probably didn't care about Zero. It actually adds a bit of novelty to both takes on the story. Original Mega Man series were more tied to Zero than what you may think ... X is there, is just the guy who fights for justice and has a soft side for Reploids and Mankind, his development isn't entirely fresh out, while Zero gets a lot of plot and main action even behind scenes: X2, X4, X5, X6. Meanwhile we can clearly see MHX giving WAY more character to X than what we have throughout 8 installments from the original series. Have we gotten full remakes / soft reboots of X2 ~> X6, then I'm sure Zero story wouldn't have been the primary focus but rather we would have seen a full story covering the battle of X against Sigma.

Man. I was so dissapointed when I realized the Megaman games on the PSP weren't getting sequels. The creators of Megaman Maverick Hunter X and Megaman Powered Up put a TON of love into the games. The voice acting, extra modes, new playable characters, and cut scenes were amazing additions and they pulled them off incredibly well. My dream is that someday these two series get the sequels they deserve, but I'll settle for just re-releasing them on the Switch/Current Consoles so I could at least play them on something besides the PSP. Great video :)

Yeah, Day of Sigma really isn't connected to mainline X1. Here, it seems the creators are trying to do away with the Maverick virus and give more complex motivations to Sigma's rebellion. Where in the mainline it seems that Sigma was corrupted by a virus created by Dr. Wily to originally control Zero. It's unfortunate that the game wasn't financially successful because it would be really interesting to see what changes they would do to the storyline on the following games.

MZM beneficiates from the fact that Metroid is an NES game which, while it was great for its time, aged terribly badly like many of its contemporaries like Super Mario Bros. and the first Zelda. MMX came out at a time when game devs were starting to nail down that "good game feel" a lot of NES titles were lacking, and therefore couldn't be obsoleted so easily if not for a few game design mistakes which the PSP remake still made anyway (the intro stage is cool and teaches a lot about how to play the game, but is also boring to go through when you already know it). Both MZM and Maverick Hunter X came out at similar times, but the gap between the first Metroid and MZM is much bigger than that between MMX and Maverick Hunter X..
@TonyTonyRedgrave
@TonyTonyRedgrave 2 года назад
@@ArpeggioPegasusMusic Super Mario Bros "aging terribly" is a heinous statement. I cannot even begin to agree with that. Zelda 1 is arguable but I would say it aged much better than Metroid 1. And it oftentimes feels like Samus is simply not equipped to face the challenges she faces through her moveset. And then there are all of the annoying imperfections like enemies being able to follow you to the next room, thus beating you up during the door-transition. I thought tying Sigma's motivation more directly to X was appropriate. There's a precedent for it, as in X8 Sigma mentions that he is indebted to X since it was X's dedication to 'justice' that "first got him thinking." It's possible to reconcile the virus plot thread and Sigma's obsession with X along with his focus on evolution.
@MiaowGaiGar
@MiaowGaiGar 2 года назад
Sigma also has an interesting dynamic with X from the beginning because of his status as the first Reploid -- in other words, the first robot designed using X as a blueprint. Right from the beginning he could have a motivation to be unlike X that makes sense, because he was deliberately designed to be like him. He could even see himself as _superior_ to X, having come later, and that could be reinforced by the fact that he ends up taking command over X despite X otherwise being his senior. This would imply that Sigma becomes a Maverick of his own volition as much as anything, because it's an excuse to come into direct conflict with X to challenge his views and prove his superiority. You'd think it writes itself, until you see that they somehow managed not to.

It in turn makes things like Storm Eagle and Chill Penguin turning in Day of Sigma interesting, because they seem in their right minds, not like they've just suddenly gone berserk, which implies that while some Mavericks may end up that way against their own will, at the very least some Mavericks defected because they agreed with Sigma from an ideological standpoint, or at least that it was ultimately a decision on their part; Penguin flat-out says rolling with Sigma just pays better. Eagle won't talk, but you learn later in Day of Sigma that he's a noble and honorable character, so you wonder why he ends up doing what he does, and he seems to even regret it to some extent. Even freakin' _Vile_ isn't portrayed as just a brainless rogue; when asked by Sigma at the end of his scenario what he planned to do if he actually beat X, he admits that he actually had no idea, to which Sigma doesn't even give an opinion; he just leaves while giving an order to retrieve Vile's broken body. Vile then gives himself a motivation afterward by saying that by beating X, someone whose status as "special" doesn't make any sense to him based on what he's seen of him, he in turn justifies his own existence. He's still capable of making cognizant decisions, even if his motivations are twisted. This builds on a narrative thread of a conflict that X causes without even knowing it: that despite X being a good person that pursues righteous goals, some Reploids come to resent him anyway because he makes them feel inferior or like they have to prove something in spite of him. Even in the case of Repliforce from X4, some Reploids that ultimately had the same goals as X come into conflict with him because of the politics of the world, not because were later affected by a virus or decided to cause trouble out of nowhere; they're branded Mavericks over a misunderstanding, but lean into it because they believe the reaction they received to be a symptom of a greater problem, that of oppression from humans against Reploids. X has to defeat them because he believes he should maintain peace and stop Reploid uprisings, but what that game never explores is whether he handled the situation the right way. Again, it almost seems _too_ easy to explore these themes, and the series even did do so on rare occasions, like with Gate in X6, although the atrocious translation makes it hard to know that: even though Gate does lose his mind because of the virus, his story is tragic because of what happens to him beforehand. He isn't just an evil character that wants to be evil; you learn later that he was a decent person that was screwed and sabotaged by his colleagues, causing him to become bitter and cynical about the world and opening him to the influence of the virus, creating an interesting villain, even if one that still has to be stopped. Even the eight boss Mavericks of the game are tragic, as you learn they sabotaged and murdered by the same plot against Gate, and forced to live again in service of his plan, but in many cases feeling indebted to him and _choosing_ to go through with it anyway. This kind of shit is interesting, and it just never gets its fair due. Curse you and your trademark bumbling, Capcom.

wait, i think there is much more depth to the idea of the virus corrupting the world, especially with its interaction with Z, X and sigma himself. with Z it double negatives him into a positive, with X he's immune due to his nature, and with sigma it alters his logical thinking. that's way more juice than making a standard villain even if it's a good one

furthermore X is not the only original reploid. Zero is also an original build of equal capability, just not as adaptive. but still boasts the same freedoms of learning and having feelings as X does, where reploids fall short. don't get me wrong, X is cool, but in terms of evolution sigma could chase after the krabby patty recipe for either of them and obtain similar results. the virus simply pushes sigma to pursue zero and power him up due to, well, you know. the virus is made by wily, zero is made by wily to destroy everything. stuff like that. ;)

It was always odd that X seemed to get increasingly shafted, narratively speaking, within his own series as the X series continued. I chalk it up to a combination of Inafune's favoritism (pre-X5 involvement) and Zero's popularity, but man did that tank any hope of significant character development for anyone in his orbit. And that's before taking into account the lackluster execution for many of the games' plots. It looked like Maverick Hunter X was the beginning of an attempt at some sort of course correction for X in terms of character focus, among other narrative modifications.
@WhiteFangofWar

Probably because there wasn't much planned for him after his introduction. He's the last son of Dr. Light and the template for a new species of robots with the capacity for free will, and that's it. A martial pacifist designed as a 'savior' can only develop so far in a game focused on killing evil robots. There was an idea I saw someone bring up in the X7 review where instead of just quitting the Hunters, X becomes a mechanic and starts building upgrades for younger hunters like Axl, or even his own family (which sort of happened in the Zero series with the 4 Guardians). Imagine the conflict he would go through if one of those sons or daughters turned Maverick?
@user-kl3us9bw3u

@@WhiteFangofWar There wasn't much planned after Zero's introduction either. The original intention was to kill him off permanently after X1, until Inafune had him resurrected, constructing a narrative for the character mid series. The same could've been done for X. Remember that X is a pacifist who does not practice absolute pacifism, and there's narrative potential in that. That's why X's shift in X7, while somewhat of a shakeup and a potentially interesting direction to take him in, ultimately fails his character. This would all require Capcom to make a more concentrated effort on narratives constructed within the games however, something that they rarely do throughout most of their franchises.

@MiaowGaiGar
@MiaowGaiGar 2 года назад
I'd argue X gets one of the worst hands dealt of any character of his standing. As a character he's surprisingly nuanced and relatable, with an internal struggle that's easy to explore and get onlookers invested in: the power to do anything and the will to do what's right, but being uncertain of himself and what the right thing to do even is. He questions his power and his agency in the world, and whether his fight is in the name of justice, or is actually contributing to the world's problems. X's infinite potential and ability to choose for himself actually troubles him tremendously, because he struggles to decide what to do with himself. Despite being one of the last robots of his age, he's ironically an extremely human character. Zero is a great foil to him not because he's cool, which the series -- and the fans as a result -- focus too much on, but because Zero always acts with conviction and is never uncertain; where X may hesitate, Zero acts without faltering. The way they both see and approach the world opens up more interesting storytelling than was ever bothered with, and it's a shame because of the setup the series gives right from the beginning: X has unlimited potential and possibility, but is that necessarily a _good_ thing? Meanwhile, Zero's destiny was decided for him, but he rejected it, choosing another path. Zero's own series touches on what might have happened if X didn't have Zero to counterbalance him, implying that in X's pursuit of righting the world's problems, he created bigger ones by mistake, but it doesn't explore these factors because it once again shoves X aside in favor of Zero, _twice,_ before killing him off unceremoniously altogether. Maverick Hunter X seemed to be primed to right such wrongs, focusing on and exploring the character more than ever, but once again, he was shoved aside in the real world. X deserved much better than what he got, in pretty much every measurable way.

Honestly I'd be interested to see the MHX reboot play out similarly if it seemed to be going the route of X and his limitless potential being Sigma's main focus rather than Zero and his Maverick origins. I think this could have led to a good number of story differences later on and it would have been interesting to see how X vs Zero in X5 would have played out. Maybe Sigma's plan would be trying to awaken X's true potential somehow rather than Zero's. Maverick Hunter X could have been a great way to remaster and give Capcom a second chance to fix any flaws with the X series. Maybe even shifting focus away from Sigma as the central antagonist and giving more of a spotlight for later villains. Edit: Honestly a "Limitless X" boss fight in place of the Ultimate Armor X we get in X5 would be so cool. Perhaps making use of that potential to use techniques such as the Hadouken and Shoryuken on top of Special Weapons from the past 4 games instead of just X4.

HGSS is a pretty awesome remake, and I like what I've seen from FF7, though I've yet to play it. KH Final Mixes are pretty nice too. A successful remake needs a couple things to stand on its own: graphical/artstyle enhancement, expanded world/gameplay, and doing what the original could do on top of that.

@@randomduck8679 Interesting, might this be said due to the shift in gameplay or episodic nature? I could still picture a pieced-together remake as a remake, and to call it a reboot or sequel is probably spoilers, but that'd mean it goes out of its way to go past the story of FF7, and now my curiosity has peaked.

@@runningoncylinders3829 FF 7 Remake deviates heavily from original FF 7. Besides adding more characterization to the side characters, the plot is not one to one anymore. The episodic nature isn't helping since we have no timeline of when the next part will release. Whether the next part will follow original 7 or go it's own way is yet to be seen but for now it's more of a reboot than a remake.

They just did that remake too soon, imagine if it were announced when we had Megaman drought after Megaman 10, Capcom suddenly tells us they are remaking entire X series on 3DS or maybe even Switch or any other platform, we would collectively shit our pants from enjoyment. But back then we simply had too much Megaman. Sad it had to end this way because i believe if Maverick Hunter X was re-released it would do much better and maybe there would be a chance of the entire X series remake (just think about the possibilities, X6 and X7 finally being good, the potential was always there, execution sucked balls).

What I really like about the remake is that Sigma's motivation is not the "Zero Virus" thing making him evil, but an ambition caused by an unfortunate speech of his creator. So I've been a lurker to your vids over the past few days now and your vids made me go play X6 this week as I bought X Legacy Collection 2 back in 2020 on a sale and left it there. Here's the thing, I've been playing X4 and X5 around 2010 on a friend's PS1 but I was able to get my PSP around 2011 and it's where I played Maverick Hunter X and installed PS1 Eboots on that PSP, X4-6, which is why I'm so hesitant to play Legacy Collection until I stumbled on your channel about these reviews, specifically X7 and X8 reviews which I still haven't played and the sole reason why I bought Legacy Collection 2 over 1. I'm currently blazing through X6 now and I had no idea how 11yr old me finished these games easily. But as I was saying, Maverick Hunter X and X4-X6 has been my games since 2011-2013 and this channel just made me go back to the X Timeline as I'm mostly a Classic, Zero/ZX and Battle Network Fan. Man there's just alot of Nostalgia to MHX for me and I still don't like Vile Mode, I might consider going back sometime along with Powered Up.

in terms of why MHX didn't do well... I can think of two reasons. One is, yes, it being on the PSP. The problem is that the PSP wasn't really a "hit" like the PS2, or the DS were *Not to say the PSP didn't sell well but given how the DS kinda was slapping it around and the PS2 lasted until 2013...* and the other was pretty much the same thing that led X8,CM and Powered up to kinda suffer as well. Mega Man oversaturation. the Series was pretty much being fired off on to pretty much every system at the time in some form or other until ZXA and SF3 flopped in sales and while MM9 and 10 did bring it back for a bit, the behind the scenes stuff at Capcom really killed the series until The legacy collections brought enough money in to get us MM11. as for the story fitting into the main canon, the only really big issue is the fact that they killed off Doctor Cain so early. Sigma could of have still been 'in control' of himself and still of have been focused on X until X took him down that first time... and then each game up until X5 could be the Virus simply gaining more ground and Using Wiley's influnce to get Him more focused on Zero, it's REAL body. And then X6 is Gate bring Sigma back out of A:Desperation and B:Spite*Because I can see Gate being that petty*, X7 being Sigma interested in Axl's copy abilties and X8..yeah, we know how that ends. The eye scars are honestly easy to explain. Sigma got the Damage from Zero fixed but opted to keep the ones from X as a reminder of X's power.
@barbarianillust
@barbarianillust 2 года назад
I think they could easily fix it if the Dr. Cain in MMX 3 is a reploid with the memories of Dr. Cain, pretty much like Dr. Light in his capsules, or Dr. Willy himself with the appearances he had in MMX (never confirmed, but with strong clues it was him). Maybe they were preparing this for an interesting plot later on in the series, who knows! (Or maybe Cain doesn't really die, and the scene was just done for dramatic purposes. I've seen very often the scenario in manga and anime where a character seemingly dies from an explosion or something but "actually the character didn't die at that time! plot twist).

It actually took me months of replaying the levels over and over to discover the first hidden armor piece. After that, the game changed completely for me. It's so cool how you can replay the game 10 different ways and have 10 different experiences. Every level is different depending on the order in which you play. I definitely recommend NOT getting the arm piece because it makes Zero's death so much more impactful when he gives you his piece. Only complaint I have is some bosses were WAY too easy when you used their weakness on them. Spark Mandrill's weakness to shotgun ice was just pathetic.

I'd love a MMX game where Vile is the main villain. He isn't some idealist with an agenda like Sigma, he just wants to destroy everything because he can, is programmed to. As a war machine. A few notes about vile mode since I went and beat it again yesterday, Vile is not as mobile as x, but taking the right weapons with you can shred bosses even if they aren't specifically weak to them. It really feels like you're playing as a war machine. But it would have been nice for him to have a dash, as the PSP has enough buttons to support this and his 3 weapon system. I do agree on your sentiment about the item placement however, it was just kinda weird. I'd like to see this game brought to console or PC with an HD remaster. I would buy it again.

I really enjoyed listening to your review. I myself was one of the people that really loved this game. I still do. The game did a lot of things right with a few parts it could've done without. One of the things I wished was corrected was the first fight with Vile where you couldn't beat him. That should've been kept the same as the original to give that emphasis that beating Vile was futile and to show how you have a ways to go before you can fight him on equal terms. Another part was the control motion for the Hadoken. I got better, but it still didn't feel fluid in the motions. And while I loved the storyline, I do wish they stayed close to the continuity better. But overall, I loved the new features they put into the game. The revamped music and character designs along with the graphics with the voice acting just made the game fun and filled with nostalgia. Hearing the emotions put into the character really committed you even further. Not only that but the Voice Actor for X was also none other than the voice of Domon Kasshu from G-Gundam! The replay factor of getting a new difficulty level and getting to play Vile with his own story made the game more interesting. And Vile's gameplay amped up the difficulty setting which was tough, but enjoyable. Especially with the reward of being able to epuip any variation of weapons when you beat the game. Not only that but the small details made the game more fun. Like in the Highway scene seeing all the traffic moving in the background or the way the energy flows in during the fight with Spark Mandrill. And then you had the fight with Sting Chameleon where whichever side he's on the eye matches the correct look whereas the SNES didn't do that. I know I'm saying a lot, but the game really holds a lot of sentiment to me. You can tell that the team that worked on this game put their heart and soul into Maverick Hunter X. I get a lot of Mega Man 2 vibes from it. It really made me happy that the team did that. I think my only real complaint was that both Maverick Hunter X and Powered up didn't get enough PR hyping the games up. I caught wind of the games by a fluke and was lucky to get my hands on them. I was really looking forward to seeing a Powered Up 2 and Maverick Hunter X2. Now it's right there next to my dreams of seeing a ZX3 and a Legends 3. Still, I'm happy they made it. Oh yeah, before I head out, is it me or did you get Batman vibes the second time you fought Chill Penguin and he did a squawk similar to the Penguin? Anyways, thanks again for the review. I really did enjoy checking it out.

I love this game to death. The only flaw it has imho is the fact that Vile's theme plays during all stages in vile mode, which gets old really fast despite being an amazing song. And would be amazing as well to have a Zero mode after you beat Vile mode, but that's just me being greedy. Btw Vile Mode is my main reason to go back to it, nothing in the series feels the same. Yes, the beginning is really difficult, but you become such a powerhouse later in the game with massive spread miniguns and the arched flame throwers that you can use to take out enemies without getting into their shot range if you're smart enough. Makes you really connect with the character and his desire to grow stronger and surpass X, leading up to the final battle against him and Zero. I do agree that it is really a shame that it never got to the sequels, and those deserve the remake treatment as much, if not more than the 1st one. 2 in particular, which is really lackluster imo, could be so greatly improved upon. Also, I'll never forgive Capcom for not including this in the X legacy collection. It really deserved to be there. They could've even used the models for an X8 themed X challenge on the part 2, it would be great.

I remember when the plan was, according to CAPCOM, to remake Mega Man X through Mega Man X6. Same with Mega Man through Mega Man 6. I would have loved to see one of my all-time favorite Mega Man games, Mega Man 3, updates with the POWERED UP graphics.

Regarding the classic series, Capcom claimed they planned on remaking Mega Man 1-8. It would've been nice to see that cringe localization ("DIE WILY!") from MM7 replaced with dialogue closer to the original scene. Not to mention MM8's entire body of voice work (Dr. Wahwee).

Definitely would loved to see a Maverick Hunter X2, as the original is my favorite of the series. Like with Vile, they could have introduced a mode where you play as the X-Hunters and give them personality like the rank and file Mavericks, as well as possibly a Zero mode since he returns and starts his reveal in that game. I also liked the idea of having optional bosses notably tougher than the rest hidden in stages and wish it would return for another MM game. X6 did something like that but like most of its' ideas it underperformed. Vile is definitely the unofficial hard mode for this game, being much weaker than X. It's funny how he's just messing up Sigma's grand plans out of jealousy.

about half way through the video here but I didn't notice the fact that the buster zero gives you at the end of the game if you make it there without picking up the buster capsule is actually more powerful than the original version, though sigma's palace has some tough sections to get through without charged specials.

We've hadn't had an X game in such a long time. A return to the series would be amazing so long they don't screw it up. Also sad that we never got a continuation to the Maverick Hunter X series. Would've been nice to see an X2 and X3 with this same treatment with the story. I prefer the OG games but the story telling in MHX was top tier.

One of the things I didn't like was the change from where you fight Vile where it takes place just before the final Sigma stage in Maverick Hunter X as opposed to the first Sigma stage in the original. With Zero dying in the first Sigma stage, I feel like Zero's death has more impact, as it means that X is having go through all of the struggles of the rest of the Sigma stages alone, thus making the fact he overcomes them feel more impactful once he does get to Sigma. Almost a "Zero died just as we starting getting into Sigma's palace & now I have to trudge through the end all on my own to stop Sigma's evil plans, or humanity may suffer if I fail." Just how I felt about how they timed the fight in both versions. I guess it could be seen as a bit more dramatic how they did it in X1. Of course, there is the aspect of being able to play as Vile & it would mean Vile not being able to play through the sigma stages, so there is that, but yeah. Just my thoughts on the subject matter.

24:26 Now I think about it, a lot of those takes about the PSP being blamed for Maverick Hunter X and Powered Up's failure came during the Mega Man drought of the 2010s, where everyone was so focused on what we didn't have during the time, that we completely forgot how much Mega Man we DID get during the 2000s, too much of it in fact. X8, MHX, the X Collection, and Battle Network 5 all came out in around the same year in 2005.

Even if we did get a Maverick Hunter X 2, which I really wished we did. Would have loved to have seen that. The voice actor for X; Mark Gatha, had already planned to retire from voice acting after his dialog for this game was complete. 2006

Not mentioned in the video is if you get to the Vile fight without the arm parts, you still get them from Zero as normal, but the super charge shot works differently. With Zero's arm parts, the super charge shot is a larger version of X's, rather than the pink snake things. I believe this version does more damage to single targets so is better against bosses, but not as effective on groups of enemies due to having less spread.

MHX is the only X game I've played (thanks to PS+ handing out random PSP games for Vita owners) and I find it criminal Capcom didn't go further with it as a series of remakes. Powered Up too, but I still have yet to experience that beyond watching a let's play. I fell in love with the story presentation and absolutely adored how Vile's mode plays out. I like to consider the way it ends to be how that section of the game goes over the original. Idk, maybe it's the idea that the character I was playing was such a threat it too the two best Maverick Hunters to just barely beat him was empowering. It also showed a twisted evolution to contrast how X develops as a character and I love well executed foils. The Maverick Hunter concept should definitely be revisited. It'd be a great way to try and get new audiences interested in Megaman X I think. Worked for me anyway.

Day of Sigma is half canon to later games as it is a some kinda of animated remake of the "novel" Cain's Diary from the SNES game's manual, and Sigma wouldn't care less for X in previous games because he was writen as "pure evil inmortal villain", hence why he is a virus and the whole maverick virus thing, and his conection to Zero that was writen from the start by Inafune, but MHX changes Sigma's motivations to match the revolutionary stuff seen in X8 as that game was telling that Sigma didn't go mad because of the virus, but the virus just boosted Sigma's intentions.
