Mega Man X3 is a strange game, perhaps one of the stragest I have ever played. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and is at the same time, a fundamentally flawed game. Let's explore all this, explore the Imperfect Perfection of Mega Man X3.

Storywise, needing the chimera armor first makes sense since it's probably the only "real" armor, and the other ones are just add-ons, as in a being that fuses animal characteristics into itself, thus a Chimera, plus that's why is the only one you actually get as a physical armor, not as a collectible Gameplaywise, they could've improved it by making it unmissable like the boots in X1, since it IS easy to skip

Gold armor also gives Zero his black armor A lot of bugs have generally been fixed A save system instead of passwords New game plus has been added A lot of items have been made easier to get, like removing the charged gravity well platform for the body parts and replacing them with a tricky wall jump you need Zero's double jump or X's up dash to get past and making the boulders in tunnel rhino's stage be able to be knocked down by the Z-Saber, tornado horn, and spinning blade And more stuff like that. I just thought of something When Zero gives X his Saber in X3, He returns to HQ to heal When X4 starts and you select Zero, he’s still in the capsule even after X3 and wakes up to get to Sky Lagoon It occurred to me that this is a great transition from game to game if you have the Z-Saber in X3 going into X4 On top of that, Sigma telling Zero he knows his secret in X2 led him to remembering part of his past before confronting Sigma in X4. This amount of detail when you look and think about it id amazing yet subtle

The "dash lemons" as the speedrunning community calls them, were not explicitly fixed on bosses in X3, it's just that all of the bosses in X3 have what's called "armor," which reduces damage; shots that deal 3 damage (level 3 shots) now only deal 2, and shots that deal 2 damage (dash lemons and level 2 shots/limes) now only deal 1.
@Xjustin3009X
@Xjustin3009X 2 года назад
I'll chime in here and say that all bosses and enemies have damage tables, although some share the same ones. Interestingly enough, the "dash lemons" do have an ENTIRELY separate damage value but they definitely did reduce it to 1. It's odd in general that this was even in the first couple games to be honest but it does make me laugh that the value still exists in X3, just reduced to lower damage.

That last segment speaks to me quite a bit considering the amount of times I've ended up having drastically different opinions from the various content creators I watch, you included, because Secret Rings is actually a good game and you're wrong for saying otherwise except for the part where you're not wrong as it does have plenty of flaws that can easily turn off many fans of the series. So maybe one day I should just get a capture card so I can make a video on it explaining why I love it to the best of my ability. X3 is my absolute favorite of the SNES games, but that is also because many of the issues reviewers have of the game are there because of the context of X1 and 2, and 4 after it. When you play those three games, then X4 immediately before or after, some of the design quirks become eminently noticeable. The Zero issue, the collectathons, the lack of communication regarding some of its secrets...they all seem woefully deficient. But for anyone who was hooked on Mega Man back in 1995, X3 was the definitive *90s* X game. It was X....*TAKEN TO THE EXTREME*. You like those items? HAVE 10 MORE! You like that Zero that was *TOTALLY RAD* in X1 and X2? YOU CAN FUCKING PLAY AS HIM! (with heavy restrictions, because this is a Mega Man game, not a Zero game.) You want BIG GAME BREAKING SECRETS?! We JUST DOUBLED IT! Honestly, it was entirely normal at the time of release. Don't like what they did with Zero? Do you not remember that Zero was supposed to be the original main character, and Capcom nixed it because he didnt look enough like Mega Man? You think they were just going to go head first, full on deep end when they made him finally playable? No way. You didn't like the collectathons? Well then, you don't like 90s games and advertisements. Baffled by the secrets, and angry that they werent conveyed at all? Were you even alive in 1993 when you learned about the Hadouken? In 94 with the Shoryuken? NOBODY KNEW THAT FUCKING SHIT WITHOUT A GUIDE. The complaints for X3 nowadays make it seem like it was a total train wreck at the time of release. A cacophony of bad game design that hinders an altogether great series. But for those that played it when it came out, it was exactly what it should have been. More X - a lot more. While being totally fun to play, and having lots of options that the other two games simply didn't have. It was fun as all hell. And the Third Armor still stands as the best armor in the SNES series - complete with having the best mobility with the double dash. Mega Man wouldn't play as fun as that again until the ZX series. I fucking love X3.

X3 always held a special place in my heart. As a kid I considered it my favorite Mega Man X game, and I think the reason is that I hadn't gotten a PS1 yet and the only Mega Man game I owned at the time was Mega Man X. I rented and played X2 from time to time and loved it, but X3 was something special because every time I went to the local blockbuster, it was always the first thing I looked for and it was almost always completely rented out. That continued to the point where it was the game I went in to try to rent when I learned they had phased out SNES games. Despite the fact that I now own it on PS2, 3DS, Wii U, and Switch X3 has been immortalized as that special unobtainable Mega Man X game that I fell in love with simply due to the fact that it was rarely in stock at the local blockbuster and those times that it WAS in stock, made the game feel that much more special to me.

This game caused me to begin using the term "X3 Syndrome". When a game has a lot of cool ideas on paper, but the execution of how they were implemented was half assed and haphazard at best. The best memory I have of this game isn't even when I played it. I was at a friend's house one night and he was doing a run where he wanted to unlock the Z-Saber for X. I distinctly recall he was in one of the last stages before you had to face that mini boss as Zero. There was an enemy mechaniloid on the other side of a bottomless pit. It was pretty late so my friend was getting groggy from having had to focus on playing through the game for the past couple of hours. He had Zero's attack fully chagred so he could kill the enemy with the Z-Saber as he drowsily declared "You're gonna die you piece of shit." before jumping just short of the distance needed to cross the gap, plummeted like a rock, lost Zero for the remainder of the game, promptly shut it off, and refused to play it again for months after the fact. I laughed so hard I was crying.

Great review. And I definitely needed to hear that at the end. As a reviewer myself, I tended to go thru major imposter syndrome - thinking that bigger RU-vidrs have better opinions than myself and having a lotta contempt for hearing them out. Nowadays, that shit is unrealistic. Cause we can't be spokespersons for other people's opinions or the media we talk about. We can only offer what these games brought to us uniquely, like what X3 brought to you. Reviewers are better to be taken empathetically than objectively imo. I enjoy indulging in where they're coming from personally more than stacking up their evaluation with mine. And that's exactly why I got encouraged to make stuff, I wanna know my relationship with games and stuff better. Thanks for that reminder, J.

I really love how X3 expands on X1. In X1 we get to see X rise to Zero's level/ become even stronger by seeing how he's able to do similar actions that Zero used previously (like the dash) and take down Vile's ride armour later in the game. In X3, we get to see that power gap expand over time as we get to play as both of them (despite the limitations with Zero's gameplay). In X1, we see Vile as a threat that always manages to get the upper hand after we think we've beaten him and we always need Zero's help afterwards. In X3, X is able to completely scrap Vile by himself.

Mega Man X3 has to be my favourite out of the SNES trilogy. The opening stage is great, it even teaches you how Zero could be played since in this game, he's like a beefier X with 3 charge stages. First two would be two charge shots and the last one is the swing from his sabre, doing devastating damage. Heck, I love how you once you defeat Vile with Ray Splasher and then bring Zero to the mid-boss in Doppler Stage 2, then he straight up gives X the sabre, subtly letting him know that X became even stronger than Zero in any given situation, calling back to that line of dialogue that he told him after saving him from Vile in the first game. The special weapons are great, the armor upgrades are top-notch, the Golden Armour and using the Z-Sabre feels great. the challenge is through the roof with a lot more obstacles thrown in the mix without getting stale and I even think the Ride Armours are fun to use too! I love the Hawk Ride Armor and the Kangaroo Ride Armor. I even find the Frog Ride Armor to be fun to use underwater too! Also, I don't find backtracking in itself to be a bad thing at all, allowing you to solve problems in the most complex of ways, even letting to use charged variants of the Triad Thunder and Gravity Well to find some collectibles too! I even love how after defeating Blast Hornet, him and his stage explodes and causes the blocks in Gravity Beetle's stage to be blown away, letting you get the heart tank on top of causing the two-foot missile bots to lose their cannons on their heads. On top of this, it can even apply to those enemies appearing in other stages too, except for the castle stages because difficulty balancing. Also, I love solving complicated problems, so it's not an issue for me at all. Maybe my brain works differently, who knows? Therefore, I find Mega Man X3 to be my favourite game out of the SNES trilogy and I would rank it in first place. Second place goes to X1 and third place goes to X2.

There's a subtle hint that points toward the Mosquito fight with Zero. If you played the previous two X games, you will have that desire to play as Zero, and try to fight bosses. That would lead you to discover that you can enter ONE of the two boss gates with Zero and at the second gate, X will interrupt Zero and take over. In the Doppler stage 2, you find a Boss gate, not the mid-boss one, in the middle of the stage, and see either a very distinctive but empty room or the Mosquito Boss. Since Zero can enter only ONE boss gate, you will get curious and thus you will try to enter with Zero and have a nice surprise. That's how I did it back in the day, having no access to guides (no internet, no magazines) and it felt great! One of the best moments I had playing games

I think X3's biggest strength is just how MUCH there is in the game It feels like a straight up treasure hunt at times, but I will admit the intended methods of getting items is a PAIN. Thankfully Zero Project makes it much better, for example: you can cut the ropes on the boulders with the Z-Saber or Spinning Blade

I’m pretty sure this is the first video J has uploaded since hitting 100K subs. If I remember correctly, he was still in upper 99K when X2 was released, though I could be wrong. Either way, way to go J, keep up the great work! Also, using the password system, you can actually have any three of the four Enhancement Chips at once. There are passwords that give you two or three at the same time. You can’t get all four of them this way, but it is still pretty cool.

I LOVED this game when it came out. The ability to play Zero was absolutely amazing to me. I hated that his use was so limited, but I was just so stoked to be able to play him at all after wishing I could for the last 2 X games. I also really loved the ride armors as a kid. Having the different armors that all specialize in different things was just so enjoyable to me. I never played Megaman X games to speed run them, I just liked messing around and blowing stuff up. I still remember in the original megaman X I found out that when you fight Vile that first time on the starting stage, you could just hold still and jump to avoid all his punches. I spend like 15 minutes dodging punches and shooting him in the face just to see if it was possible to blow him up. Very cool game.

X3 is my favorite of the SNES trilogy, probably nostalgia since it was my first "X" game, but still, it add so much to the series; playable Zero, many secrets, having his own Ride Armor, the come-back of the iconic Vile now with his own stage, the two other bosses that jump on you. I dont know, it may be all over the places but it feels like a complete package with something to discover every playthrough when you play it as a kid.

One of my fondest memories in my early gaming years, was finding the X3 gold armor with no guide. Back then, most of us didn't have internet yet and if we did we didn't know about stuff like gamefaqs. So when I found the gold armor before it was even in any of the print magazines I was hype as hell. I tried to submit finding it to a magazine but I guess someone was just a little faster and got credited for finding it. Still, it was great telling my friends I had found how to get the super secret in X3. They didn't even believe me at first lol.

Thank you for the shout out again! This is such a MASSIVE update in quality from your prior review of X3 in general and prior videos. You are absolutely right about X2 though. It's due to burnout that I just sort of.. gave up. There wasn't too much I would've done with X2 honestly. Have the X-Hunters appear right after the intro, get the Zero parts, Zero is playable. There would be separate text of course like X3. The Black Armor capsule would've been with the Shoryuken capsule. There's no real plot changes for it but it would've been fun to have Zero in there. I did update the Zero Project.. again.. a few months back I think it was? I think it's V4.4 now. Zero can now obtain the Z-Saber Wave like X ONLY if you're in NG+ and have the Black Armor. There's a bunch of bug fixes too. So honestly not much has changed lol. I think adjusted some damage values as well so some bosses and enemies don't smack you for 90% of your health for actually no real reason. I'm very glad you enjoyed my project so much. It's what got me seriously interested into modding SNES games and it's a love project from the heart. As much as I'm burnt out of the X series now from it, it's still something I'm incredibly proud of to this day.

Counterpoint to your argument about the golden armor. The fact that you need to have collected EVERYTHING in the game, plus be at full health when you reach it, suggests that it's meant to be found by a player who has mastered the game, and thus wouldn't need a guide since they'd have probably explored every chunk of every level in the game. In that sense, its placement and overpowered nature makes sense
