Moissanite is one of the most popular and realistic diamond alternatives available today, but is does have both fans and skeptics. Is Moissanite the right option for you? the answer might be somewhere in this video.
What we are looking in this video is more info than the last video featuring Moissanite (in response to questions and comments, interesting facts, pros and cons, and some buyer info to help if you are looking to buy.
Here is an article I mentioned:
www.thejeweller...
Clear Lab grown gemstone
Simulant and Alternative are not bad terms. not derogatory-just the way to explain they cover the same ground. Meant to share the same spot. Diamonds are still way more know/it’s the “original”
REMEMBER- you can buy whatever you want- that is the beauty of all these options. there are a lot of preference and opinion. I see people get almost angry at others options (like diamond)”they’re overpriced” “they’re expensive”. Guess what--You don’t have to buy it!
Interesting facts.
Can be found in Meteorites. doesn’t seem to be found outside of these instances
Has two different types of crystal structure: Cubic and hexagonal
Cubic is basically more “diamond like”, BUT it can’t be commercially produced at this time. have trouble growing in reasonable sizes and color(more yellow)
Everything available to the average consumer is the hexagonal version. You/we are really only speaking to the hexagonal version when we discuss Moissanite.
YES it IS a diamond “simulant” “Alternative”-not sure why people believe this to be derogatory? That is just how we describe them objectively.
-While it does occur naturally(in rare instances), I don’t know anyone who owns any. it’s basically in a museum. You own a stone that was created, because people love diamonds and want “alternatives.” It doesn’t take away from what it is, it is just What IT IS.
PROS and CONS- to be fair we will start with CONS and end on a positive note
CONS
-Not as hard or tough as diamond. YES it is close, but no cigar. If you compare it directly to diamond, there is still no contest.
PRO and CON?-
Lab grown. Less expensive, more reliable supply, BUT it’s not all sunshine. propionates of Lab Grown say it is more ethical, traceable and
Means it is not natural and some see this as positive while others want the romance, value and rarity of natural stones.
Pros
Very tough, very hard still lags behind diamond in my observations
explain why Moissanite is rated Excellent on many charts vs diamond very good.
Inexpensive compared to natural diamond should more fairly be compared to lab grown diamond, but is still less expensive.
Can look very good, but remember there are different qualities and there is even less standardized grading than diamond.
IF YOU ARE BUYING-what to watch for.
It has come down in price, but be mindful who you are buying from if you have any concerns other than just price. I have seen a lot of online retailers using Moissanite in the name, only to be selling CZ. --The ethical and environmental considerations of some manufacturers is basically non existent. they are just selling- as cheap as possible.
Use the same general criteria as you would with diamond 4 Cs. ( i am thinking of making more detailed videos on each of the 4 C s. Let me know if that is something that interests you in the COMMENTS?)
I think dealing with a reputable independent jewelers in best, BUT if you are going to buy online and/or you just want to support the channel I will provide some links below to sources and companies I feel confident in how they operate.

Maybe you didn't get to this part in the video, but he gets into how the production of moissanite is rife with its own moral and ethical dilemmas. So it's not quite as simple as diamond bad moissanite good. (Although I would choose moissanite if I had to.)

The most bling & bang for the buck!... Moissanite has great durability...a better refractive property...a very clean stone...white in color & inexpensive! A colorless & clean stone with a gleem & glimmer that dollar for dollar is...unmatched!!!... Since buying a diamond is NOT for investment purposes, then go for the best shine & shimmer!... Moissanite's my # 1 choice!

With Moissanite and lab grown diamonds these days, it's really hard to justify spending tens of thousands on a natural diamond. If you spent $1000-$2000 on a nice Moissanite ring and then took the other $20k that you would have spent on a diamond of the same size and invested it.... in 10 years that 20k could easily grow to be $100k (and that is with a very conservative growth - it could actually be much more). Versus if you had to sell that $20k ring in 10 years, plan on getting maybe $8k.

Interesting thing about moissanite - it turns green when it's hot (like jewelers torch hot) but turns colorless again when it cools. Bet there's some interesting physics there.
@listen2thedude

I can’t help but notice the underlying fear and hate when jewelers talk about Moissanites (not regarding this video specifically). The truth / fact is: Moissanites are the 2. hardest gemstone on earth. Many are colorless (DEF) but have more brilliance and fire than diamonds. You can put it anyway you want, but that’s a far superior stone right there! Lastly: the argument about resale value is bullcrap. You never really sell your engagement ring and if you split up, she doesn’t deserve to make money off it.

I was fortunate to find my moissanite wedding set from a company called Kobelli, in California. We paid $1100 for the set, and it looks as good as if it cost thousands of dollars. The moissanite is high enough quality that it still shines brighter than a diamond, and the rest of the halo and pave stones are all diamonds. All of the stones are lab grown, so thankfully they are ethically sourced. But I love my ring and wouldn’t trade it for anything.😇

When people say moissanite doesn't hold up as well as diamond I always wonder, what is it that's scratching up one of the hardest materials we have access to. Are they throwing moissanites in a drawer full of diamonds or something?
@kevins.2165
@kevins.2165 3 года назад
Moissanite do hold up more than a diamond. Many said its not sturdy enough etc. but the heat tests on diamond and moissanite. Diamond breaks while moissanite stay still🤣
@juhadexcelsior
@juhadexcelsior Год назад
In hardness moissanite falls short. But in terms of everyday wear and tear, neither diamond or moissanite will scratch. To my knowledge, moissanite is the second hardest naturally occuring mineral compound on earth. Moissanites also handles heat far better than diamonds and diamonds, while harder, are also more brittle than moissanite.

Hello and I appreciate all the information. I just learned about moissanite recently. And have been all over the net learning about it. Because I was looking at buying a daimond wedding ring. To replace my old one and a new pinky ring. To go along with my new cuban gold bracelet. And to be honest I ended up buying 2 certified moissanite stone rings. And way less then I would of spent on just one diamond ring. For me I just wanted a real stone ring and moissanite turned out to be a awesome stone over the diamond. What I also learned. Is that just like diamonds you can buy fake moissanite. That blew my mind. So I had to find a reputable jewlery company that sold real lab moissanite. Over what many on the net would call simulated moissanite. I guess that would be like crystal or maybe Cz stones I guess. Not to sure but had to really research just to get real lab moissanite. Which was a challenge as well. But either way I will be getting my pieces soon. And hope they turn out to look as good as the website pictures and description showed. I'm really starting to be a fan of this moissanite of its history as you mentioned and the look and chemical make up just interest me. Might even up grade my wife's wedding ring to a moissanite setting for our next anniversary. Great post and people just need to decide for themselves and their budgets what works for them and their families. I've always loved diamonds. Most people I'm sure have as well. But moissanite is moving up for me. :) I will see after I have my jewlery for some time. To make my final decision.

Where would be able to see one in person? The Moisanite that I seen on TV and ads on RU-vid are absolutely beautiful. Before making a purchase of one or many, I need to see Moisanite with my own eyes. My lifetime jewelers have of course downplayed the gem. I have purchased many diamonds in the past from including loose stones. So, I live in the Tri-State area of Philadelphia, South Jersey, and Delaware. Can you recommend to me a place where I can see a nice grade Moisanite in person? Thanking you in advance.

Thank you! I have learned new information about diamonds and moissanites. I own vintage diamond set, and one diamond in the ring has chipped. I wear my moissanite every day without problem. I order mine directly from China from a reputable dealer with a factory that sells the very same pieces to American jewelers who price it so high you could buy a diamond for that price. I can order 14k gold Moissanite pieces for under $400. Why pay $1500 for the same moissanite ring from a stateside jeweler? I have $30-50 pieces that are simply gorgeous. They look like diamonds. If I chip or break one, it's easy to replace. I have several high quality natural diamonds which I rarely wear anymore. Yes they're sparkly too but not as sparkly as my moissanite plus I no longer have to worry about losing diamonds or having them stolen.

My experience of how Moissanite wears in a ring is mixed. While it is very tough compared to most gems, I find it to not hold up compared with diamonds in real world use. I have observed facet chipping far more than I would have expected for the amount of use. I speak a bit more of this in my CZ to Moissanite comparison. At the end of the day it is a great option for the price, but if pressed, I wouldn't say it is better than diamond.

Moissanite (Silicon Carbide)is the latest diamond simulant. Like CZ, it was initially praised and pushed by retail jewelry stores with a high price. Now CZ rough material for cutting costs a few pennies per carat. Is moissanite better than CZ? It is better for the retailer since he is making a big markup on price over what a CZ would cost. Actually, visually the CZ appears much brighter and is colorless, unlike moissanite which has a faint greenish overtone. I am a Graduate Gemologist, a chemist and a faceter (I cut gemstones).

A Diamond engagement ring loses value almost the moment you walk away with it.if you can’t afford the type of diamond ring that is going to rise in value they are a waste of money as far as I’m concerned. While you could easily make the case that moissanite is a “diamond simulant” or “diamond alternative” it’s nonetheless derogatory. Ultimately, moissanite is a separate gemstone that in some ways is not as good as and in some ways is actually better than diamond. Generally speaking, though, and this can’t be understated, people who love moissanite, don’t like hearing it called a “simulant” or “alternative.” But really, the worst thing you could possibly say is that you’re better off buying CZ. Hi, I watched the whole video. I was going to provide a link to the 5 carat Moissanite necklace I recently bought on eBay, but the seller has taken the ad down after I questioned her about the piece and asked to return it. She told me it is set in silver, not an alloy. She had two listings for the same piece with slightly different descriptions. This made me skeptical. Also her other items for sale are nothing like it. It doesn't look handmade and it came in a simple baggie, with a product UPC item sticker, with no information sheet with it, no box, no pouch, no business card, no thank you note, nothing to reassure me that someone made it by hand. I bought the piece for $100 Canadian. I'm still not sure I like it, it looks so costumey. But I will keep it and hope it grows on me. Watching a couple videos about how moissanite is made was helpful. There's still a lot of work that goes into cutting and shaping and polishing. I chose Moissanite because I was curious about it, and I like it's rainbowy refraction; because I had a piece as a preteen that was made of a similar rainbowy, clear material. I don't know what it was, it might have been lead crystal, but I regret not keeping it and I wanted to get a piece that would remind me of it.

Appreciate your frankness. I have several pieces of beautiful diamond jewellery bought over decades. I should be very contented with my collection. However, I just love jewellery. So I can’t help buying jewellery that I find attractive. Lately I found an online store named Anoushi that sells very pretty design jewellery made from moissinite. So far I have bought 3 items from them before discovering your blog. Will you be able to comment on this store or provide me with links to jewellers selling moissinte jewellery?

Contraire to what is said that diamonds are forever... they are not, unless you purchase a Type 2 clarity F/IF color DEF $tone! And even they can be destroyed with paronah acid right back down to carbon black!

I support cultured gems and the technology behind them because they finally take the exclusivity out of owning durable gems. It isn't so much carbon footprint or politics. Every product has its place though. As long as jewelers adapt to that, they'll be okay.

I disagree about terminology yes I agree its a diamond alternative but simulant infers that people are trying to pass it as a diamond when alot of us are buying it as a conflict free clear stone that give the classic bridal look without the negativity non-conflict certified stones carry for rhe new generation. We are evolving as a society in the way that we consider more about "how/who does this effect" when it comes to everything from plastic packaging-human injustice and moissanite hits those marks. It's also (like I commented on your other video) that it suits the clientele of the everyday person, where someone like myself can afford a fine jewelery purchase, opening the market for so many people. Last point diamonds have horrible resale, I can buy a 700 gold moissanite ring and resell it for 70% of its value. I live in the UP of Michigan and mining in my community is terrible for the environment so you will never convince anyone that a lab is creating more of an issue then a diamond mine, that is a moot point.

I just purchased a diamond halo semi-mount from James Allen and a moissonite center stone. The 1.45 moissonite was $500 so much cheaper than even than lab brown diamond. I may consider replacing with a lab diamond in the future but I am not sure yet. James Allen seems to be an incredible company to purchase from. What are your thoughts on James Allen?
@WoWGirl6
@WoWGirl6 2 года назад
Were simulants initially created in labs solely for being imitations of another? If so then okay. But if you dig deep enough into the chemical occurrence of the mineral in nature than you realize IT IS A GEM but it has only been synthesized easily in the lab. And merely because that particular gem can look like a diamond, it is suddenly a diamond simulant... cubic zirconias develop in nature. Same goes with moissanite. No offense to you, I’m just arguing of the history and intent behind the term. And who created those terms. If you dig enough into the history of diamond you will see that many jewelers created these notions to better sell and gain exclusivity in high demand for their product. To gain a foot hold in their business. Diamonds are not as rare or valuable as we thought. So my argument lies with the whole mind frame of having to compare everything to a diamond.

I am waiting for my first blue coloured moissanite ring to arrive. I am curious about the colour and sparkle. I do like to wear an alternative to diamond when I go out as I have lost real diamonds that fell out of a ring. I don't like wearing my real diamonds for that reason. Moissanite would be a good alternative to wear out of the house or on vacation. I will let you know what I think when it arrives.
@thebadgersdenvaletudoclub6254
Good moissanite jewelry isn't dirt cheap. It's a lot more affordable than diamond though. It took me a lot of sourcing to find a good moissanite source. The stone quality definitely varies and you get what you pay for, even sourcing overseas.

My question is kinda off subject. I invested in a few gemstone rings, moissanite included. To sell in my nail spa. Beautiful stones. However they are 925 silver adjustable. What’s your take on these adjustable rings? This helps keep the cost down and have more styles available. They do sell okay. Thanks. Catherine

I also noticed that you never went into the details of diamond labor mining. In fact you implied it, never was direct. But felt indulgent to talk about factory workers. Which side are you highlighting in a more negative light? Sure you aren’t selling or making money on diamonds on your RU-vid channel but you certainly want to maintain a stigma around diamonds by creating this content. Hey it’s okay to have a bias. I just think maybe it should be grounded more down to looks rather than pretending that you care about how it’s harvested or about it’s rarity which turns out it isn’t all that rare. It’s not all that valuable. The DeBeers got a monopoly in that market.. And I guess people care about hardiness? Sure. Whatever lol. Most chicks love the radiance. And if the chick loves it, then you’re golden. I just think it gained it’s rightful spot in its own market.

You do understand that diamonds may be a 10 on the mohs scale for hardness but moissanite is a tough gem. Diamonds are more brittle than moissanite even though it's a 9.25 moissanite is a tougher gem. It's just as beautiful as a natural diamond maybe not as expensive. I love my moissanite diamond rings. Ben though

I believe the reason why people hate the word synthetic is because to normal people that sounds like it's "fake", but when you read up more about it, you quickly realize that it only means lab created. As in the stone still has the exact chemical composition as a natural stone. To me it is a miss labeling(os smear campaign) against other white/colorless stones so that they stand less of a chance against diamond. Every time someone says "the romance of natural stones" I cringe. Since when is mining romantic?

Great video as always. I especially liked the parts about durability (7:49) and sourcing (11:27). I do have a few questions. Referencing back to an earlier video, do you still see chipping with moissanite? I'm curious how you would compare its durability (not hardness) to ruby and sapphire? What about colored moissanite? Is it a treatment or colored all through the crystal?
@YourAverageJeweler
@YourAverageJeweler 3 года назад
I have not seen much colored moissanite. Just guessing, it would not surprise me that the color goes all the way through. Durability? Hard to say between corundum and moissanite. My preference for a colored stone, I would probably lean towards Ruby or Sapphire. If you are getting synthetic anyway, you will save money on most Ruby/ Sapp. options. And natural - well you would have to go corundum. I hope that helps.

Not necessarily, but it can be a real consideration. Some salt and pepper are perfectly stable, but inclusion that are easily seen are large enough to possible cause durability issues. It depends on the specific inclusions and their nature.

Do you possibly know the statistics of how often moissanite breaks out of 1000? My engagement ring is moissanite and I'm unsure of what level of gentleness I need to treat it with. I don't clean with it on or anything. I have fallen asleep wearing it occasionally
@YourAverageJeweler
@YourAverageJeweler 3 года назад
You should not have to worry about the durability of the stone on a daily basis. Try not to expose it to rough use(gardening, weights, etc) , but it is a good "daily driver". I still advise being cautious with engagement rings for the long term, but the ring(things like prongs, in particular) are more likely to wear out before the stone. There are always exceptions, but don't stress too much and have your ring checked by a good jeweler once or twice a year.

The only reason why moissanite isn't the industry standard is becauee of de beers. And for that I thank them, let all the suckers and fall guys buy the diamonds and keep ignoring moissanite. That price is unbeatable 🤣 last thing we need is excess demand and two gems that don't hold value at all and cost a metric ton to own. Moissi are literally superior diamonds in all ways except for the minor double refraction and hardness. On the mohs scale, moissanite rates at 9.25. neither Diamond or moissi are scratching unless exposed to inhuman levels of pressure and stress
