As a Nigerian, I feel like the overpopulation will break the country. I can go on and on about all the problems in Nigeria and not even scratch the surface but at the heart of it the corruption has and will keep us from developing into the powerhouse we could be. I've always thought that the only way to fix this place was to break it down and start from scratch. With the amount of ppl currently suffering its only a matter of time before it boils over to something bloody bc so many are so angry at the state of things and the fact that things are not changing
@@jaybee4577 Just go to Rio or Delhi and see the endless crowded Favelas.....overpopulation exists, just because its not in your country doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Its literally one of the most toxic combos, poor infrastructure growing inequality and a rapidly increasing population. its not completely hopeless but its definitely not an easy fix.
@@jaybee4577 The population is huge, but social resources are limited, and everyone can get less. Try to increase the population of the Nordic countries by 50 times, and will their living standards be as good as they are now. This is a very simple math problem
@@1mol831 I think there will probably just be mass emigration as nigeria turns into more and more of an overpopulated hell hole that nobody voluntarily wants to live in.
Nigeria is simply going to keep growing in population. That’s what happens when you introduce modern food production quantities to such a primitive society outside the capital.
So I’m actually from Nigeria so I have a first hand experience in the country. It bad. Corruption is on a unimaginable scale. People are struggling to make ends meet and the reliability of the electricity is a joke as it’s common for back-outs to occur so much that it’s considered normal to have a back up generator. It is a crappy nation when it comes to infrastructure as most of the roads are dirt and the housing is more functional than good looking. Another part of Nigeria, a big part, is Nestle. They essentially got a monopoly on a variety of things like the ever present formula or chocolate milk. The story’s of Police Brutality sadly enough actually seems plausible as the government doesn’t care about its citizens. It is absurd the difference in quality of the wealthy’s environment than the regular Nigerian’s. So yeah there is a reason that I’m not living in that place anymore.
What have you personally contributed to humanity? There will surely be problems in where you are living too and Nigerians can tell you that. The title of this vidoe refers to the future, and it seems you will personally not see that future as all you have is to dwell in the past and complain in the present.
Excellent documentary. It touches on the major burden of Nigeria. 🇳🇬 The tri-enthnic and religious divides are significant then throw in a good dose of corruption then the reason for Nigeria's struggles for ever elusive greatness becomes self evident.
@@meccuno I totally agree but if only the northern leaders could look past their ethnic and religious prejudices, my goodness it would be a nation of limitless potential. The south of the country has very much adjusted to overlooking tribal shenanigans (forget what you hear in the media) but the north is a different kettle of fish.
@@ultramaleX The South is very much embroiled in ethnic and religious prejudices. ask your self the real reason why the SW collaborated with the North to oust Jonathan. The truth is that Tribal and ethnic sentiments would always exist its not a problem in itself but becomes a problem when it is used as a tool to subdue other ethnic Nationalities. now ask yourself this question, has the North ever shown willingness to be progressive devoid of religious bias? The answer since amalgamation has always been a resounding NO!! like I always say, for there to be progress, its either we create a confederation or we split. our differences are just to much for us to continue to deceive ourselves that a country would work out, The North is fighting for survival because they do not have access to the sea and don't have the capacity to exist progressively without the south. we can never make progress with a people whose beliefs starts and ends with religion and mediocrity. They have absolutely nothing to bring to the table other than misery and death.
I think Nigeria's only chance is with a change in government.the current regime is full of contradiction.it's inactive and ineffectual get heavy handed and brutal. It is full or wealth and opportunity but poor and stagnant. It's a problem all across Africa, it's full of potential and even currently is growing, but it could all fall apart if the current governments continue their exploitation and collaboration with neoimperialist powers

Sometimes I wonder how long I will live to see the world change again and again. I was born in 97 and there’s been already one and a half industrial revolution I’ve seen China become a super power and am about to see space flights becoming common again. Without any boomer overtone, I’d like to say we’re living in amazing times and I can only hope to live long enough to see how things will unravel in the next 20-40-60 maybe even 80 years for me and the world as well Peace out
If Nigeria is to be the next superpower, the country needs to improve in alot of ways, for example Safety (as nigeria has a homicide rate higher than brazil), Life expectancy (as nigeria has a life expectancy under 60 which makes it one of the lowest in the world) and Corruption (due to nigeria having a corruption index of 25 meaning it has the 30th highest level of corruption)
The problem with corruption is that one result is that record keeping is completely inaccurate and unreliable. So things like census data is a vague guess at best.
@@David-jy7vh lol, did you even search anything? 34.52 per 100k people dies from homicide in nigeria. 27.38 per 100k people dies from homicide in brazil,
A good overview of the situation in Nigeria, but there were a few flaws with your assessment of Nigeria. The issue of corruption in the government is a severe one, and despite the fact that the government makes 80% of their revenue through petroleum, the average citizen doesn't benefit from that money, in fact, petroleum is being drilled out of some people's backyards, and they aren't receiving a cent of the profits. Most don't think that total unification will get Nigeria anywhere, the divide between the North and South are too great, and major independence movements are going on in the primarily Christian, resource-rich South to separate from the majority Muslim North (Not much has changed since 1967). The only things that have ever really held Nigeria together are the colonial ties put in place by the British, centuries ago. I think it would be a better approach to actually ask some Nigerians who live in the US and Britain what their take on the situation is, in order to get a more accurate assessment of Nigeria's future. I can tell a lot of hard work was put into this video, but I think it would be best to go more in-depth regarding such controversial topics.
What is this inferiority complex? You do know that other developed countries also have these divides right?? The only problem is your pessimism and lack of patriarchy. You have already given up and are only grieving and hoping for a miracle. Get up and don’t give up.
A lot of times it really boils down to corruption and politicians tryna line up their pockets. Also, the government cares too much about ethnicity when it comes to who to give social mobility which amplifies the divide and makes people who are underserved want to leave the Union. If the government actually embraced sound economic planning, then yeah Nigeria has a fair shot. A friend of mine told me how Nigeria was planning on building an oil refinery in the North even tho all their oil comes from the south. Idk if that's true or not but if it is, you see my point on how the government is making questionable decisions. I do remember reading one article on how a steel mill was constructed far away from any iron deposit or mines. These stories really just highlight incompetency
What the video fails to mention is the vast oil wealth which Nigerian leaders at both national and state level removed in corruption. The progress of Rwanda shows the difference a good leader can make.
@@Lucas_07-PL Botswana's advantage is the sheer lack of people in a Germany-sized nation meaning they don't have to provide for that many people that other African countries do.
@@cjhenry41 - the idea of "excessive population" was destroyed by the success of Singapore and Hong Kong, and China and Bangladesh. All have far more dense populations than any African country, including Rwanda. The massacres certainly, didn't help, though they did lead to a smart strong noncorrupt leader taking over.
As an American, I hope to see an African country like Nigeria become a rich and prosperous country if it gets rid of some of its corruption. It will be a much different world by then and perhaps Nigeria can be more influential to other countries in its region. Hopefully, more manufacturing jobs turn up there soon. I'm rooting for them.
I just have a feeling that Nigeria will plunge into civil war, possibly disintegrate, though if the case may be, it is for the better of the different ethnic groups
it wouldn’t be good for the different ethnic groups 🤦🏾♂️. ethnic nationalism is an 18th century european concept, if nigeria ever breaks up, expect a whole bunch of small landlocked petty ethnic states that are going to turn the region into a worse off middle east with further expansionary war & a whole lot of genocide
@@tonyeffik6781 I agree. I can't even wrap my mind around what these northern states will turn into. And people will always find a way to discriminate. It's going to be similar to South Sudan. After the ethno-tribalist speech becomes invalid, Igbos, yorubas, ect will start fighting eachother within their states over resources. I even foresee Muslim and Christian yorubas discriminating against eachother in a Yoruba State.
People have to realise that ethnic nationalism doesn't play as much of a factor as countryball alternate-future mapping channels run by 12 y/o kids will lead you to belive. Simply, historical, regional and religous divides play a much bigger factor
Nigeria really needs to develop modern public transport for its cities. Lagos has a little bit of BRT and ferry network, Abuja has a light rail which is expensive to ride and goes through empty land. Kano, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, and other ones need to advance their public transport infrastructure.
I see some issues with the history part. 1. Most of the Southern states weren't really Empires, definately Aro wasn't an Empire and they weren't all slave trading, tho all mentioned here were slave trading.(another caveat is that some of these weren't slave trading throughout their whole existence, Benin famously stopped slave trading for a century during its most stable period). 2. Sokoto also had the world's most literate population. 3. Nigeria didn't get Christianity to any significant extent from the Portuguese, Christianity really came with the English colonization. 4. The South isn't more Western Educated because it was on the coast, it was more Western educated because it was colonized in a harsher manner that more subjugated the existing power structure. The North's colonization however still left alot of the entrenched powers in place, just submitting them to British power. The British colonial government for the most part wasn't what brought colonial era education but the autonomous Christian missions that did. So when these Christian schools tried to get started up in the North, Northern Muslim Leaders rejected them and petitioned the British government to barr them but when some Southern leaders tried to stop Christian schools being opened in their area, they were suppressed. Also, the South being less unified than the North which had just been unified under the Caliphate meant that there was no unified resistance against the Christian schools in the South and many actively embraced them for either the opportunity, prestige or religion or some combination of factors. 5. Also, preferably explain the North-East-West differences in a way that acknowledges the dominant Hausa-Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba groups but doesn't Ignore the minor groups like the Tiv rebellion in the North or 12 day revolution by Isaac Boro in the East. 6. The justification for the first coup was anti-corruption not anti-North, Yoruba leaders were killed too and Igbo leader fled. 7. Biafra isn't an Igbo republic, it is an Eastern republic. Most of the minorities of the Eastern region joined in as well. 8. As for China, Kinda. The Chinese Empires have always been Han but have progressively converted more ethnicities into Han as they expanded. 9. As you said, China adopted a more Capitalist system, but aren't like your poster boy for Capitalism, initially being a Socialist state. For Nigeria to adopt a similar system to China they would have to go the other way and adopt more socialist and planned economy stuff.
Nigeria is only barely a country. It should probably be three countries. The geography and ethnic divisions make any real unity extremely difficult. But the population could be put to work in a way similar to Bangladesh. Yet, population is one of the most difficult problems to solve, in either direction, just ask China. I see more reasons for the country to SPLIT into three than to become more cohesive.
The population has plateaued in the South due to women education and urbanisation but the fertility rate in the North is shocking. The average literacy rate in the South is 85%, in the North it is 25%
Yes but Nigeria should be 2 because the east and the westerners have similar problems from the 1990s as northern Nigeria had the power of the country the country shifted and moved its borders of the country. both western and eastern Nigerians have similar problems and cultures than different .

Just watched the first 2 minutes of this video and I'm convinced every dummy can make videos online. China is a nation state with 92 percent of it's population being han. Mandarin is the national language not English and has a history dating almost 3000 years. India is a better comparison being a British offspring as Nigeria. China outsources labor to India, Vietnam, Cambodia Ethiopia Thailand. Nigeria isn't even among the nations where Chinese manufacturers outsource their production. And with automation outsourcing manufacturing jobs will become a thing of the past. Does anyone with a camera can make a RU-vid video nowadays
Saying this as a Nigerian myself, it can be nice to look at what the country could be, but the amount of corruption, lack of security and social facilities will lead to its downfall. Millions of Nigerian youths (such as myself) find it almost impossible to secure a well playing job based entirely on merit and not on connections. That's why so many of us are migrating, and from the looks of it we seem to be doing well abroad. The human capital flight is a major issue here. So many brilliant people are underemployed or not even employed at all. We are still shackled by the by-products of colonization such as religion and it has maintained a stronghold on the country. At the moment, there doesn't seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel... everybody is trying to fend for themselves when the government runs our resources and money to the ground. I like to believe in change, but it is hard to stay patriotic. I know other countries have their own flaws, there is no perfect utopian civilisation but the staggering amounts of seemingly endless problems is just too overwhelming.
In the 1960s and 70s, the same comments were said about Asia and China - that the countries had no future for their overpopulation. As wages in Asia rise, firms will start to move their lowest skilled industries to Africa. Nigeria will get some of this, and will end up an industrial powerhouse. Note that in the initial stage of development, employment expands, not wages.
@@AndalusianLuis - so industries like garment making will move to the easiest African country to do business in, which has a port. Kenya? Ghana? Nigeria does have the advantage of a large domestic market.
China has already learned lessons from the US and has been laying the groundwork for switching to a service economy for a decade, instead of letting it cause economic turmoil like it did in the US. At some point, we will see a revolt over the huge corruption in the area, the new regime will nationalize several industries (whether it keeps them or immediately locally privatizes them is a toss-up), it will start rapidly industrializing, and it will become the new scare-monger "sendin our jobs to _____" country. First it was Japan, and then Mexico, and then China, and soon it will be Nigeria. Turns out industry moves around completely every couple decades.
Skeptical. First, manufacturing jobs don't tend to be transferred to low-wage countries anymore; the jobs tend to be given to "robots" who don't need to be paid at all. Second, global elites are increasingly embracing a quasi-religious environmentalist ideology. They increasingly want _degrowth,_ not more growth. In this worldview, there are too many people on the planet, polluting the air, and using up too many resources. Their belief is that planetary virtue consists of having fewer children, using fewer resources (and not just fewer fossil fuels), consuming less meat, manufacturing fewer goods, and pushing others to embrace an ascetic, materially self-depriving lifestyle.
As a Nigerian who is Yoruba. The Yoruba are actually 50/50 when it comes to religion. We have both Muslims and Christians and to me it’s an equal amount
Another major problem facing Nigeria is the current Islamic insurgency in the northern part of the country, allowing the flow of weapons, drugs, and general instability in the area making it harder for future improvements
Bro, the Christians in the south still have na zi Christian traditions, so that they are the ones that import alot of drugs and weapons from the west and become terrorists later on

I don't think China will allow African countries to grow as fast they did, it's took them 50 years to be the China we know now, because of that their people are making way more money than they expected and let to higher salaries, I think China will have more control of how much growth that will allow those African countries because they need cheaper labor.
I am in North America and I have a Nigerian colleague who is highly educated and is as smart as anybody around me. By extrapolation if Nigeria uses the petro-dollars to get everyone educated and manages the country properly to keep the educated workforce, there is no reason to doubt one day Nigeria will become a great global power. As a side note, both my colleague and his wife have law degrees. You might think high education leads to lower population growth but even they have five children, several times more than that of the average family here. I guess having a large family is a Nigerian thing. Of course over here, overpopulation is not a problem.
You are very optimistic that Nigeria's insane population explosion will make the country rich and powerful. I don't share this optimism. Unless population growth is brought down to sustainable levels things in Nigeria will even get worse. Population grows faster than the economy means that the development of the country is going backwards.
What I find fascinating is that they don't find it a problem, even though they will literally double in 20-25yrs. I think the ethnic competition for power means all the major tribes are trying to outbirth one another and they encourage their people to have as many kids as possible. It happens here in Kenya when they announce census results so I know how African leaders think.
@@jameskamotho7513 Well not necessarily, Nigeria’s population have always been questionable since independence. There have been reports of corrupt local and state government inflating and fudging population census numbers in order to get more money from the federal government. Nigeria it self with the exception of Lagos, Kano and some other cities is sparsely populated. I do agree that more needs to be done especially in the northern part with educating the people.
Although it sounds like you put a lot of effort in this video, you clearly don't know the situation in Nigeria. Corruption and tribalism (North vs. South) are the biggest issues outside the widespread poverty and unemployment. This is thanks to all the widespread corruption. I don't see it being the next China, because it already is the next China. Also your ideas would require Nigerians to care about fellow Nigerians. Spoiler alert- they don't. Rich Nigerians don't care about the poor. Nigeria has all the resources in the world to make it a powerhouse, yes. But due to stupid deals that were made in the past, they have buy back their own oil. Not to mention the rolling black-outs. Or scarcity as far as jobs, or jobs that only give you ONE day off....
I'm starting to realize that tribalism seems to be a huge problem in most african countries, even in successful nations across Africa. Not to mention corruption but partly that also has to do with 3 major western government powers; America, France and Britain. I've heard from my fellow african countrymen in the U.S. that coups are usually done by these western governments as well. The perception of Africa in America depends on the individual nowadays but sometimes it can be so abysmal, that I have discourse with my fellow Americans (Mainly white Americans lol) about what is and what is not from, imperialism to ancient history.
Not just The US bro. Everybody who does not live in an African country will not really understand the issues most African countries face primarily due to lack of exposure. From my experience, it is mainly Europeans who have the worst viewpoints of Africa as a whole
Although I do think rising population will cause this country, with such a corrupt government, to break apart, I think that one or more breakaway countries in the south could become hugely wealthy, despite their smaller size. Hopefully after things have settled, the new governments will be at least somewhat less corrupt. Other parts of the country, especially most or all regions in the northern half, will probably remain relatively poor.
Nigeria is expected to reach 732 million people by 2100 While China’s population will prob go down to like 1.06B Nigeria can get more people than China but that day is very far from today
Good video. There must be alternative routes to development rather than by quadrupling your population. Scandinavian countries and whole suite of European nations have developed without overpopulation. India and China have slowed down growth. Egypt and Indonesia (both majority Muslim nations) are working to senstise their people to the benefits of smaller families. I think the only thing you didn't touch upon is, the quadrupling a population of 200 million sustainable, considering that environmental protection is virtually non-existent there? When the environment collapses people won't be spared either.
If the population projections are even somewhat correct, They will all starve and not reach anything close to half a billion people. Plus where is nigeria gonna get all of the capital/investments to develop? Capital is gonna be really scarce in the next 30 years with the retirement of the global boomer cohort. Also, climate change? Nigeria is screwed.

A large population is fine if it isn’t outgrowing their economic growth. It doesn’t matter how much money you are making if you are spreading it among more and more people. Areas in the north under shariah law are less willing and able to control population growth so poverty will increase until they solve this issue.
Sadly no. If anything Nigeria is very similar to the country on the other side of the Atlantic. Brazil. And both countries are the way they are due to Slave Trade. One being the main provider of Slaves and the other being the main purchaser of Slaves. They both created Slave centered Economies prone to explotation. But while Brazil was able to gain independence. Nigeria was part of the scramble for Africa. Making this area even messier, as a lot of cultures, some even at odds with others are now part of the same country.
Nigeria has the economic indicators to become the next China but that’s about it, in every other regard it’s in fact a pretty dismal outlook. Nigeria is going to need selfless leadership with forward thinking policy that will need to be implement perfectly if it’s going to avoid disaster. This would be tough for any country to get right and is near impossible in a country where nepotism and corruption is the norm. Worse, this needs to happen in the next ten years! Nigeria and for the most part the rest of Africa have very young populations. These young kids and those at retirement age are liabilities to an economy because they are not working and paying taxes. In ten years a lot of these young people will be at a working age and present a huge economic potential for Nigeria. In the US after WWII we had the “Baby Boomers” which was a perfect time to have a surge in population because we had a near endless supply of jobs on the horizon. With the near destruction of Europe it created the perfect conditions for the US to become the power that it is. Nigeria is having a population surge where I just don’t see how Nigeria is going to be able to grow that many jobs to accommodate them? These “boomers” then become a liability as opposed to an asset because a lot of them will be unemployed. U have a lot of unemployed or at best underemployed young people it’s a recipe for revolution and political strife which in the immediate will only make things worse. Africa as a continent or country in Africa shouldn’t even think about being a world power and less a Superpower…it’s putting the cart in front of the horse. The West and now the East have way too many advantages in the geopolitical realm. Africa countries needs to establish inter trade amongst themselves, develop infrastructure so that trade is easier and cheaper. African countries desperately need to start manufacturing finished goods, especially those where the raw material are extracted in Africa. The countries of Africa need to figure out what these resources and finished goods will be that can give them a global advantage. It may take pooling the knowledge of other countries but the skills learned in manufacturing finished goods is a snowball effect. Don’t be fooled by China, they build infrastructure to be able to extract resources more efficiently. They won’t to establish a footprint in Africa because it allows them ports and a cheap labor source to produce their own products just as China was to the US. The Chinese though had a plan. They learned to manufacture ever increasingly more complex things, they stole and copied a lot of patents they were able to reverse engineer which allowed them to innovate quickly. The free market concept never really worked for the US in China. Because China as there population became wealthier in par were able to develop the more tech items the US was hoping to sell them. China won’t make that same mistake the US did in Africa. Population is key though….even China a Superpower and increasingly India still have a huge portion of people who live in absolute poverty.
Copying and stealing can only get you so far, increasingly China is becoming a hub of innovation and R&D. According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation's(WIPO) Global Innovation Index(GII), China is ranked at no12,ahead of Japan, Israel, Canada and Norway on the list of the top 20 most innovative countries in the world in 2021.( for comparison Switzerland tops the list while the US and UK are ranked 3rd and 4th respectively)
the is one issue I see in Nigeria's population growth is the sustainability if they have such rapid population growth and they can't keep up then they will have to stop exporting and become a consumption economy with will slow the economic growth which will mean less electricity, water wifi ect and I think tripling population is a bit much but I can easily see the population getting to 450~ million take or leave it by 2080 maby even by 2100 if other economic issue's pop up and or social issues.

I am not sure how it ends well for Nigeria Yeah China has a big population but that has always been true compared to the rest of the world. That however isn't the case for Nigeria.. The population growth is bad enough since it means it increases the amount of infrastructure and good jobs needed but its not balanced either which is arguably worse. The country will get more Muslim over time which coincides with the most backwards parts of the nation which will make the Christian south only want to leave more as they get outnumbered and drug down..
Why do we project population figures into the 2100s? Thats just ridiculous. That figure is never going to be accurate. Population growth slows the more a countries becomes developed. For the figure to be accurate we would have to assume that Nigeria is going to stay the same for 100 years.
I really doubt that Nigeria will surpass China in population in the 22nd century. They would need more than 1.2 billion people to even get on the same level. Even though it might look like the population growth is unstoppable, I think that things like lack of water, food, recourses and overall development will put a halt to extreme population growth before it even comes close to China.
China will fall down to 800 million by the end of the century as per the World Health Organization, but under a very optimistic scenario. As per other projections like Lancet, it will have a population of about 650 million. Lancet's projections suggest that Nigeria will reach 550 million by the end of the century, not 800 million, like what WHO predicts.
Europe is diverse as well, but yet they have the EU. Diversity can be a curse or a blessing depending on the observer. Not to forget Europe also had its shares of wars, most wars committed on earth were in Europe, yet all is good in the end.
But the EU is a multinational organisation, even today nationalists in Europe feel like the EU is interfering too much with their countries, if the EU tried to become one country the backlash would be enormous.
The problem for Nigeria being "the next China" is that it is not a stable country _at all._ There's more to just costs that makes one an industry hub, you don't want to invest in a massive unstable hole. China has problems and bouts of instability, but otherwise it is remarkably stable for the conditions foisted upon them. If Nigerians are _already_ in constant protesting mode I can't imagine what will happen if they are forced to endure Chinese labor conditions en masse. Their labor conditions are already abysmal, but on an industrial scale like China? I would expect a new Biafra. Related to Biafra, they have huge sectarian issues that remain , because of the artificial creation of the country.
I love nigeria but the most effective way for nigerians to be successful is to leave nigeria. I'm happy that my parents worked hard moved to the US to give our family the best chance for success
It's very unlikely Nigeria will be able to reach 800 Million as they say it will simply due to geography. Nigeria can't support that sheer population, I'd put Nigeria's population limit at 400 Million or so.
Knowing problems of a country is one thing, but explaining it is often hard when not knowing just the true scale. Hearing from people who have experienced it first hand is an eye opening experience.
