I think one of the main benefits of swapping which always gets overlooked is .....RESALE VALUE.who wants to buy a 5yr old electric car.with nio you can always upgrade to the latest battery tech after buying an older car 🤟
Battery swap is great in China and parts of Europe, but it will be unremarkable in the US. In the US, the name of the game will be fast chargers. Structural battery packs will become the dominant battery type here, and structural packs are not possible with battery swap. Tesla’s 1 MW+ charging tech that was unveiled a couple of days ago will enable ultra fast charging speeds for next gen BEVs. As BEV adoption increases, more and more charging stations will come online. Existing gas stations will convert their gas pumps to charging stations. Charging stations have a smaller footprint than gas pumps.
@@waynelewis9110 did you understand the resale value point made? If the options are: 1- 5 Years old Telsa Model X with a 5 years old battery 2- 5 Years old ET7 with a new battery access. I guess you will choose the Telsa. Reason person like me in VA, I going with the ET7 to have access to newer battery technology.
You do realize that you can get a new battery with that 5 year old Tesla Model X if you’d like, right? Service centers can make that happen. Besides, as demand for ICE vehicles continue to collapse, resale values of used BEVs will be strong for all of those that are compelling. Chevy Bolts and Nissan LEAF resale values will suck, but used Teslas, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6 and others will have great resale values since they will be well-sought after vehicles after used ICE vehicles become almost completely undesirable. Also, ET7 isn’t really comparable to Model X.
Also the another point is upgradeable batteries, i.e. in the future as 150kwh comes out, you can use that if you want. If I have a Tesla or Chevy or Hyundai, I am stuck with the battery I bought 3, 5, 7 years ago.
Dont forget the benefits for the power grid! The PSS has a peak power usage of 550kW(less than f.E. 3x200 kW SC or more) and it charges the batteries with 40kW to 90% to ensure a longer battery lifetime. It can be used as a power storage and help to stabilize the grid ;)
I can understand the benefits for the grid, but what are the benefits for the owner? how many batteries does it contain? Do you have to charge at a certain point anyway, due to lack of charged batteries?
@@rolandsoderlund1948 If the battery has a problem at some point, you can simply swap to a new one. You get an inital lower price if you buy the car without the battery and if you switch your car before 6 years, you don't overpay the battery with the monthly fee. Gen3 does everything automized so you can leave the car while it will swap the battery and will park the car after the swap process. Up or downgrade your battery as you like for longer trips.
@@dennista42069 For sure, but as I understand you only get one swap a montg included. There is a risk thatvthe station don’t have a charged battery on my arrival. One of my first trips in a BEV was over 1050 km and 4 charges. I’m driving about 5000 km a month, only unlimited swaps would be beneficial, and a guarantee that there is a battery waiting for me. As this isn’t the case I cannot see why swapping is so great.
For the 3rd gen swapping station it takes under 3 minutes. Instead of the old battery coming out and then getting the new one it is now done simultaneously, hence descreasing time.
NIO battery swaps will only get faster, quieter and will hold more batteries. Wait for the solid-state state will a large capacity these batteries at Swap Stations can charge during lower electric rates and can feed back to the grid. I absolutely love the ET5 & ET7, NIO is the future. $NIO
@@DWREV there is little to no draw back of swap station... 1 buy the small battery and rent the larger battery when you need to.. 2 furure proof 3 resale value 4 easier and cheaper to deal with millions and millions of used battery that will needed to be taken care of in the future...... 5 swap station can also act as a small power station to help with grid stability during peak demand... 6 make money by reselling electricity to the grid during peak demand... 7 swap station is more scalable in dense populated city...one swap station can handle hundreds of ev ..while one super charger can only handle one ev...swap station will act like gas station and we all know gas station work every where......
@@airrodgers7277 Very well said. I do not understand why some people are against it. Perhaps because they already have Tesla in garage :) More options to charge own car and a lot of pros/plus for consumer.
@@rolandsoderlund1948 batteries which remain in the battery station will be charged at the mean time between the battery changes. I have understand that 3generation battery station will be also super fast if necessary to improve the charging speed if there is a "line" outside of the station.
Hope NIO keeps it up and comes to America have my eyes on the ET5, if it works in Europe it has a chance in the US. It will take a while for Super fast charging to not be harmful to the battery.
I'm sure congress will go nuts in the most dramatic fashion once some "whistblower" realizes JAC, Nio's old contractor, also supply vehicles to the Chinese military.
Just think about, there is no one who would want to pay $15k to $22k just to swap out the battery anytime they way, especially when a battery goes bad. Also, battery goes bad not only through usage but also due to road hazards. There is no disadvantage to the user of swap technology but countless benefits now and the future, including subsequent users of a NIO used vehicle.
I am simply in awe with NIO. I don't know any other EV right now that are competitors. Maybe Tesla, but NIO looks like they'll be taking over very soon.
Anybody that thinks this is a bad idea is delusional. Even though I have access to charging, I don’t have any intention of buying an electric car until I have access to a nio and battery swap. Battery swapping will be the future especially for large city’s, who wouldn’t want access to changing you battery on a long journey vs waiting for you car to charge.
@@DWREV In NIO case all batteries are checked regularly so bad batteries will be replaced from the swap stations. The only cons with battery swap is that there should be all car brands in the same wagon. Then consumers will get 3 options to charge their cars. Home via home chargers, on street via super chargers and via battery swapping. Bad batteries could be changed fast and repair shops could change damaged cells without to unbuild the whole car. More plus/pros than cons in consumer level.
Waiting isn’t really that long. 30 mins to fully charge. I plug in my Tesla, take a piss, strectch, buy some combos and soda pop, and then sit in my car for final 15 mins watching something on my Tesla screen (Hulu, Tik Toks, Netflix, utube). I’m interested in NIO technology tho. How do the old batteries get filtered out? Wonder if I pull my brand new NIO up to swap my brand new battery and then get one that is 20 years old and reaches its life as I’m sitting on the side of the road.
Battery swap is seriously being pushed in China, where not everyone can have a dedicated parking spot and charger, especially when EV ownership rate increases The fact that CATL is moving into modular battery swap technology, means it's a serious direction to go The CATL chocolate system is modular, so you can only swap 1/6 of the battery, which is physically detached and replaced with a fully charged module
My brother in law had to replace his Tesla battery as if was out of the Garantie after 150000miles and over 8 years old at a cost of $18000 so he was able to sell the car.In such cases battery swapping makes sense to always have a fresh battery
Swapping is a quite good alternative. Might be a bit fancy but great option anyway. And keep in mind the next generation of stations will only need 2-3 minutes!
But what is the waiting time and the average queue now that infrastracture in germany isn't still well developed, also the montly fee of the battery cannont be neglected rn, i feel that this is a very promising and smart idea but the changing speed should increase rapidly otherwise you might end up waiting 20 or 30 minutes just to start charigng.
In future the Next 3rd gen (2023 Q2) swap station will do the battery change in less than 3 minutes. Battery to 10% -> 90% It does not matter do you need to swap to 75kw/100kw/150kw or 300kw...or 1000kw future tech battery. The swap time is always the same and you get always the latest battery tech to your EV car with swap if your car is old used car. For consumer level more options is better :)
So for the small battery: 165€/month -> 1980€/year -> 19'800€/10 years (current batteries are around 90% health at this point) ... but of course, that's the price to pay when renting and not caring about the battery (what happens in case of a crash since it doesn't belong to you ?). limited to 2 swaps/month ??!!? So on long distance travels ... which is the only use case ... you have to go only once a month to a location needing only 1 swap (2 with the return). Rest of the time you have to use DC chargers ... that swapping was supposed to replace ... I'm struggling to find the point in all this. Or is it free swaps and then you have to pay ?
Renault had a battery swap solution in Israel over a decade ago - "Better Place". Same logic - reduce initial sale cost of vehicle and breaks the "my battery" mentality. The other great benefit of this "Battery as a Service" model is as battery tech evolves so can the rolling stock - easily and with a BMS firmware update in the station if needed. (Perhaps batteries can ID themselves in a Plug and Play manner.) Finally if all the batteries are kept accessible then recycling - or repurposing becomes very very simple. There is a company that is repurposing worn EV battery packs (as is) as home grid power backup. This makes sense as the rapid charge and discharge nature of EV use is not applicable for the home grid market and as such the normal failure mode causing the battery to be replaced is avoided. Great solution. Be great if these packs could be made in one form factor per vehicle size. Standardization would help drive adoption.
Besides maintaining resale value that Sharon in the comments mentioned.... Nio's car will be able to do battery swap on its own when autonomous driving is allowed. Plugging in doesn't make sense when there are more demand for it in the future.
Can I change the voice of the board computer? With all the dos and don'ts the car is more bearable with Kermit's voice. How long did you wait in front of the station?
06 minutes 20 seconds plus the time you have to wait in the queue. It will be interesting how you can expand the capacity with relative little space to use. Definitely better than conventional battery charging, but only as long until conventional charging speeds up. Also it will be interesting, how big the capacity of one station is in one day. How many cars can be swapped with a new battery, until the input of each car is to high for the station to keep up charging the batteries?
This can be done in 1 minute, if/when properly optimized. And no queue should be if you just predict arrival of each car that needs a swap through the app.
Battery swapping will only be superior to charging if the swapping station is around the corner. If you have to drive several km to get to the station it’ll cost you time and range. In this case homecharging will be superior to swapping. But there really is huge benefits in swapping if you are on the roads all the time for work. But again, only if there’s enough swapping station which is not the case at this point. Here in the Netherlands there’s only 11 available in the whole country, that simply is not enough.
Still you need to calculate with the time to get back and forth to these swap stations. It needs a network of swap stations witch is quite costly. Love the idea though but will you have an easy and close access to them is the question here.
You can just plug these in at any charging station including at home if there is not a swap by you. 88% of nio owners in china now live within 3km of a swap station.
@@airrodgers7277 Super chargers are quite easy to find near where you live these days. At least here. But I still find it more annoying to drive away too far. But that's me and my experience from using a MB E-Class NGT around 2010.
Cuz a prius will never feel and drive like a nio😂 those things drive like a magic piece of cloth like from aladin. Those thibgs feel weightless driving them. Ive driven a couple and im also a nio mechanic in the netherlands. I was one of the firdt group sent to germany for the training last year
I'm not bullish about swappable batteries since it will become a design liability in the future. The feature will essentially box the same design 5 - 10 years later, since every nio car from now on will need to incorporate swappable batteries regardless of future battery innovation or car design innovations. There is a reason why Samsung Galaxies stopped having swappable batteries.
Wrong. The only standardization is dimensions. Already, higher ranges and even new battery chemistry like LFP is beginning to be introduced to improve performance of the car without need for expensive modification, if anything, instead of hindering innovation, it's the very opposite of what you say! It's augmenting it!
NIO is the most convinient. I dont know how they are evan able to sell cars that charge overnight or several hours? that is ridicules like you are waiting for comunity bus by the schedule...idea of owning a car is to be autonomus at any goven moment and NIO is the only EV that can perform that. this company is the future!
What if you planing to camp and there to charging or battery swaps, and there no WiFi to call for help. What about solar or legs power recharger to charge a battery for 3 day😂😂😂
I don't understand why all videos like to blast max volume when music is on. This really agitates me. Why can't the volume be the same as the voice volume. It's too troublesome for me to reduce the volume when the music is on and increase back the volume when you are speaking. FYI, I tend to skipnsuch videos.
So you pay a monthly subscription for thr batteries too. Wow. I knew there was a catch. Right now car makers are losing massive amounts of money which means they will charge more for this in the future. When electric cars came out a few years ago, there were free charging stations everywhere. Now most are not free. You have to pay sometimes more than gasoline
You get a €10-15-20'000 discount on the upfront price of the car. Since you don't need to pay for the battery. I think cheaper lower range batteries can be €50 per month, while highest range newest battery tech might be €150 per month. Consider if you go on a road trip perhaps you can just rent the highest range battery only for those few days you need longest range, then swap back to your cheap battery range when you're back to your regular short daily range needs at home.
Meanwhile the car industry in Germany is doomed because of cheap Chinese cars that will flood the market. This batter swap is not practical on a large scale.
lol. NIO is currently expanding into Europe. NIO has 8 swap station in operation or so with many more being built as we speak. All motoring journalists are talking NIO right now. The ET7 just won the prestigious Golden Steering Wheel in Germany. NIO doesnt need to pay anyone anything to get coverage.
@@DWREV DW's news and documentaries have a meh reputation in China as they have a reputation of being well, a bit biased. The poster didn't know DW Rev is different!
What do you think about NIO holding a LOTTERY or RAFFLE to move cars at FULL PRICE. NIO has 120 NIO houses across the globe. ..go to a NIO house and buy a NIO $2.50 COFFEE or DRINK and automatically get entered into a RAFFLE to win a NIO. Lets say a NIO ET5 cost $50,000 that means NIO would only need to sell 166 COFFEES or DRINKS per NIO house to equal that price. Imagine the excitement(youtube videos, facebook post, instagram, local TV news report) about the WINNER. There would be lines around NIO houses with people wanting to buy a NIO Drink....NIO could move 10 cars a day at FULL COST no discounting.. PLUS NIO would get all their money upfront...NO PAYMENT Plan..People would be TREATING their friends to a ROUND of NIO Drinks just to increase their chances. What are your thoughts
