Hello! We are Mikey and Teara and we run Filmjoy. We love to watch TV and movies and talk about why they’re art. We occasionally play some games too.
Movies with Mikey is a positive look at film criticism through the eyes of someone who loves movies to an unhealthy degree.

Fun fact: People thought that a gallopping horse had all four hooves in the air before, but they thought it was when the two front legs were outstretched, like a jump. Hence that's what was how it was painted and such. But the motion picture showed that it was actually the moment when all four hooves where under the horse that they didn't touch the ground. So a horse is not continually jumping.

I enjoyed hearing Jordan Peele talk about how maybe the creature has been with us all along and, when unfolded and pulling people up into the sky, might have been the reason humans believed in angels and people ascending into heaven. I like that this isn't just some random "Here's some cool lore I thought of, isn't that neat?" tidbit from Peele, but still works with the movie's metaphors, just switching it to religious spectacle and exploitation rather than Hollywood (and thereby making it a broader point about any powerful system that requires an audience and therefore must awe them, inspire them, create art for them and tell them it all has a deeper importance, while also using its power as a tool of control and exploitation). The creature has been with us all along, because the creature is human nature and the systems that nature tends to construct.

I feel like Nope was the greatest movie that I didn't get to be a part of. I was an extra for about 5 or 6 years and in my last year, I got to work a day on Nope. The scene we were doing was taking place in a hospital and I imagine it was after the whole blood rain scene because I was casually sitting in the Universal office they had converted into a hospital wing and I see Jordan Peele walking with Daniel Kaluuya and shouting to everyone, "It's time for the BLOOD ROOM! Hehehe!" 15 minutes later, Daniel walks out DRENCHED in fake blood. The scene never made it into the final film and I didn't even get used that day for the scene, I mostly just hung out in case I was needed, yet that experience alone made me so excited for whatever the hell this movie was going to be.

Loved the interpretation! I honestly didn't think Jupe was looking up in horror. Rather, it struck me as awe, or some form of adulation. It seemed different than when he was a child looking at the horror of Gordy. Hmmm...interesting to ponder the different interpretations! (subbed on Nebula ;) )

I love Nope but the only thing we can say for certain is that when the movie ends, the movie is over. Can we say the lives of the survivors are better? Nope. Can we even say all the people who appeared to make it to the end did indeed live? Nope. Normally I detest this sort of ambiguity because it's usually the filmmaker is trying to be profound without saying anything, asking the audience "What do YOU think it means?" Peele knows what he means and he asks us "what does THIS mean to you?"

There's also a weird riff on the horror film/anti-war film that's really about the human condition:' Come and See' particularly at the end with the call back to the well, gazing upward as the eye, also followed by that symmetry of the close up. I guess this is about the experience of viewing and how we view an experience, how we record or recreate it. The invaders in that film did not see what they were doing objectively and had an alien state of mind, what they were doing was not real to them. The people they destroyed were like animals whose very lives only value was a fleeting and mindless entertainment. This is similar to how an audience will watch ultraviolence and mass murder dispassionately, laughing at the antics of the heroes and misfortune of the slaughtered in a cinema. Notably cast and crew faced death making that spectacle. The director of 'Come and See 'never made another film, for so many reasons including I would assume, trauma and guilt. If you've ever worked on a film and thought, I know this was pretend, but that actually just happened? Or even wanted to just say ' nope' and end the participation. Maybe JP felt that he had said something profound, which I think he did. Not everyone will 'see' it though.

I just wanted to tell how my interpretation of Jupe differed from yours, Mikey. He definitely does bad, immoral things in his adult life, but i feel like you paint him as too much of a villain here. That look of "horror" as he's about to be swallowed, i saw it has though he was almost welcoming his demise. Sure he was in awe, but once he realized what was about to take place, i think he found it freeing after he had lived most his life cursed with the traumas of his past. Additionally, i feel as though he knew he deserved this painful end for the acts of exploitation he committed in his adult life. It's definitely a reach, but i really felt that from the look Yeun gave there. Also just his general vibe throughout the story. If there's something greater to be taken from this message, it's probably something along the lines of the hardships of child celebrity and the affects it has on maturing into adulthood. Of course the hardship here was totally out of the control of the subject, but when you think about it, that's always kind of the case.

I feel like the story of Jupe in NOPE is too similar to that of real life actor Ke Huy Kwan and that if Oscar voters had to watch NOPE they might realize that maybe Ke's story isn't as much of a feel-good one as they tried to push it as. Specifically people like Steven Spielberg(whom this film clearly pays homage to) might feel really bad about how he discarded Ke for the past 30 years.
@tvsonicserbia5140

In what way did Spielberg discard him? He's only said the best about him: “Reuniting with Steven was one of many highlights. I love this man so much. He is the reason why I fell in love with acting. There are some really tense moments in it, and two mental images the setup implies that stayed with me for a while. But everyone in here comparing it to Jaws is essentially correct - people are calling it a horror movie because it's by Jordan Peele, and he makes horror movies. If you can handle Billy Kintner and Ben Gardner in Jaws, you can handle this. For that matter, I'm a wuss when it comes to most horror these days (I'm so terrible when it comes to anything that discusses suicide that I couldn't watch the trailer for SMILE, for goodness' sake) but I loved Us, too. And that's got a bunch of gore in it - Peele understands the importance of tone, and brings everything he knows from his time in comedy to play the light and dark to tell a story, rather than just gross people out.
