Is North Korea's Spy Satellite Legit?

Recently North Korea launched a "spy satellite" known as Malligyong-1. Is it actually a working satellite, or just a political stunt? I took a look on several radio bands and couldn't find any evidence of this satellite doing anything. I also spoke with some satellite experts who haven't been able to find signals either. Has it failed? Never properly deployed? Is there another frequency I could use to listen for it? If you have any details, let me know in the comments!
More information on the satellite can be found at the links below:

The frequency information comes from a SatNOGS forum thread where someone spotted a signal at that frequency when looking for the older DPRK satellite, the KMS-4. As far as I know that has never been confirmed to be from KMS-4 or even come from a satellite at all. The KMS satellites are also said to have X-band hardware, meaning downlink frequency around 8 GHz, possibly with a directional antenna only transmitting when in sight of a ground station. You can receive modern satellites in the 466 MHz band, it's used by weather satellites for negotiating with ground-based sensors. The MetOp-B and SARAL satellites transmit a very narrow signal at 465.988 MHz, while the ARGOS-4/Gazelle and OceanSat-3 satellites use a new downlink type on 466 MHz that's over 2 MHz wide, you would need to use a sample rate of at least 4 MHz to clearly see it against the interference.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 6 месяцев назад
Interesting, I didn't realize there were some active downlinks on 466! I'm definitely still a beginner with a lot of these systems. I also haven't gotten into X-band yet, mostly because I can't find any hardware that will handle it. I'm hoping if this thing is active that someone will figure out the frequency, even if they can't decode any of the data.

You should be able to pick it up at 468.738 MHz using basic FM modulation. Use Orbitron or similar to predict orbit path. It's in LEO so you will need to point the antenna and move it as it moves across the sky. I've never done this manually but am amazed at seeing some of your past results. I used to downlink from foreign remote sensing satellites every day for work, but I had a multi-million dollar ground station at my disposal and the antenna tracked satellites automatically.

To be fair, if I built a spy satellite for spying on the usa, i would probably set its transmitter to power down while outside the position my own country can send/receive radio to it. It would probably just target the area they wanted to spy on, take photos passively, then power back up once it was over korea and transmit down the data. Perhaps you should take a weekend vacation in south korea and bring your gear to the hotel. :)

Have you tried a circular polarized "Egg Beater" antenna? Not as much gain as a yagi but doesn't require aiming. You could also get rigs for ham radio that enable people to control the antenna as the satellite arcs through the sky. Since there are many amateur satellites and repeaters on 400Mhz, did you try your methods on those known signals. For example SO50 and the ISS come to mind as satilite repeaters that are relatively easy to work. I had success working satellites with a Arrow yagi antenna making some contacts with a 5w Yaesu HT. Even once receiving a beacon from a palm sized cube sat. Since many satellites tumble through space, the polarization of the antenna is sometimes continuously changing as it arcs across the sky. Meaning with an antenna like a yagi, you have to rotate the antenna to get optimal signal. Also the mode of satellite matters too.Not everything is FM. I would venture to guess any government satellite is running some sort of encrypted digital format in a much a higher frequency band to pass more data. However, it's possible the satilite might have a back-up 400MHz transceiver on board. Some satellites will have a separate transmitter to transmit the health of the systems on board. For those in the USA who want to work satellites, all you need a Technician class Amateur radio license, a 2m/70cm FM HT with two VFOs (or two radios to receive and transmit), and a UHF/VHF yagi. While Arrow makes one that is ready to go, there are plans to make them out of a tape measure and PVC pipe. The ISS is by far the easiest to receive and hit. It's possible to receive it with just stock antenna. Some people are far more invested in the hobby with radios like the Icom 9700 controlled by software that also tracks their antenna.

There are still some active downlinks in the 460s, you just need the bandwidth sample to get above noise floor. But I have noticed a carrier with no (discernible to me) data at 1417.6 (best guess at an average with unknown doppler shift) mega hurtings, which I thought was guarded for RA. My listening gear is all scrap/salvage/borrowed or Strategically Transferred Equipment (you know,) to Alternative Location. I imagine that you can relate. But I'm IVO a certain SE US port city so maybe that's why I got something. Just odd the band and the timing.

My guess is North Korean hasn't powered up the onboard radio equipment just yet. That could be why you didn't get a signal from it. Generally the idea is, satellites remain "dormant" until they reach their intended operating altitude to save onboard battery power. It generally takes up more power to operate the satellite's thrusters than it does the radio equipment.

@@saveitforparts something tells me that North Korea was probably testing the satellite’s systems to make sure that everything works as it supposed to before the satellite’s mission begins on December 1st. Before you ask how did I know that, I follow the James Webb Telescope on twitter when NASA and ESA, and the Canadian Space Agency were testing the space telescope’s systems after it was inserted into its planned halo orbit

Maybe it's stealth, in the sense that its transmitter only turns on when given a command by the base station in NK. They could be collecting data for weeks before doing one single download on a pass. But more realistically, it probably doesn't work.
@Stuart.87
@Stuart.87 6 месяцев назад
You got it. The transmitter only turns on only on a command by the base. the satellite receives instructions but sends none it's a satellite with much older technology than you think it's an old-fashioned photographic spy satellite. the satellite takes film photographs on command preferably when there are few or no clouds or uses infrared (analogue). There is a drum inside that powers the cameras. Then when the film is full it is dropped on earth (film bucket and parachute) and is recovered in the air by a transport plane or in case of failure there is an attempt to recover the film with frogmen if it is fell by any chance into shallow waters. The lifespan of your satellites is only a few months. If it is still in orbit afterwards it is in fact more for the sake of propaganda or quite simply because they no longer give a damn.

@@Stuart.87 There’s a pretty interesting declassified film called Corona a Point in Time available on RU-vid. The film is a retrospective on the US Corona film based spy satellite program which spanned the latter years of the Eisenhower administration in the late 1950s into the early 1970s. If I recall correctly, it took the US six attempts before they got successful results from a Corona launch. Corona apparently used an Agena upper stage vehicle which is surprisingly large. There is an Agena spy satellite vehicle on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force near Dayton, Ohio. A couple of things make me wonder whether DPRK is attempting to record on film and de-orbit the payload or whether they’re recording and downlinking electronically. Most likely the reason the US resorted to the system used in Corona is that space survivable electronics of sufficient resolution and tape storage equipment with enough capacity did not exist in the late 1950s. Commodity consumer electronics now exist which could survive in space at least short term to allow recording and downlinking video. I am not familiar with DPRK rockets, but I wonder if the rockets have enough capacity to launch a vehicle large enough to carry the mechanical systems required to handle a film based recording system and its reentry subunits. The short less interesting answer is that regardless of whatever technology the DPRK satellite used, there is at least reasonable chance that the satellite is a dud. The US and the then Soviet Union took quite a few attempts before getting successful results.

A few people have apparently listened from closer to NK, and not heard anything either. I would think a film system and re-entry heat shields would be harder to make work than just a camera and radio, plus they'd be a lot heavier.

@@saveitforparts Thanks for your reply. I like the answer that the political message that DPRK can send a payload over the US east coast on the first orbit was what the regime wanted most from the mission.

@@Stuart.87The film thing was of its day due to the technology of the time. These days it's fairly trivial to make a satellite which takes pictures and sends them down. Getting it into orbit is the hard part!

Recently, a North Korean delegation including Kim Jung Un visited the Russian Space facilities which was publicized both in Russia and North Korea. There was discussion in the West that large artillery round transfers were taking place from NK for Russia in Ukraine with a trade off regarding some type of space tech. It's possible that Russia provided them with needed tech for their new spy satellite. After all, since the beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, there has been a large increase in the flaunting of sanctions by China and Russia which could involve getting North Korea up to speed in it's ability to project new capabilities as a thorn in the NE Asian sphere regarding South Korea and Japan. The likely success of their recent launch at least in getting their payload into orbit could reflect on these geopolitical changes taking place between the West and BRICS countries. Just a thought.

@ Well, what I shared isn't "BS" regarding recent unfolding events and secondly, I doubt you have privy knowledge to what was launched which could of been wholly Russian tech for all we know. The Ukrainian conflict has been underway for two years at this point. A PR stunt with Russia doesn't necessarily designate a particular time line under the hood. It's speculation hence the nature of this video in probing for evidence. So to your rude "BS"...I'll just take up the point that you are about as knowledgeable as anyone else here...or if you have something further to state that isn't just hurling insults like a child, then please do share.

@@snoozeyoulose9416 Jakub is correct to hurl insults at you. Writing a multi-passage fanfic about how projects almost a decade into the making are some last minute tech upgrades from Russia and how it "could reflect on these geopolitical changes taking place between the West and BRICS countries" is absolutely laughable. Things in the DPRK move so slow, you usually forget when they even started. But please take the insult and never write bs fanfic online and expect something else than a slur coming at you.

@@anita.b correct or remind me if I'm wrong but we can already guess that most North Korean technology has its origins on Soviet/Chinese/Russian technology so it is possible that if technical aid was given to them toward the near end of the development program for their spy satellite then it wouldn't be difficult to retrofit the existing design in a shortish period of time. However I do agree that things like this still take quite some time to actually manage and plan out so in reality it could be a mix of both very long term negotiations and technology transfers and a more recent direct aid effort going on.

That's possible, or it might only transmit when it's over NK. A few hobbyists who live closer to Korea have also looked and not found anything. Hard to say for sure though!
