Regardless of your POV none of us want to see people unhealthy and unhappy. So rather than point the finger as to why, put your hand out and help when you can.

Disase or forced choice due to low income then buy cheap food and had a lot of stress and can’t have fun due to low income so they had an anxiety and may develop other eating disorders to escape into it or build bad habits. The obese guy need emotional support and being love more than money and don’t comment on there shape or eating habits unless he asked you 😊

I used to believe exactly what you wrote. I used to be obese. Always thought I was naturally big due to my family's height & weight. I blamed everything (genetics/the cost of eating healthy etc.). I decided to take control of my increasing weight in my mid 30's (I was 6'4" & 250lbs). Cut out most carbs + sugars and eat whole foods. I also started exercising on a regular basis. Fast forward, I'm 45 now and in the best shape of my life. Have a six-pack, which I've only had as a kid before (teenage years). I also found that the cost of food, as you stated in your original post, was actually less. No more wasted money on sticking and multiple meals, whole foods actually filled me up for extended periods of time. Yes, maybe it's easier for some, but it's 100% controllable

Thank you doc! One can have all the will in the world to change their life for better, but if that person also suffer from mental illness like depression, that motivation will be stripped from you and flushed down the toilet. The complete ignorance towards mental illness and the wide spread fatphobia in our society is insane. It makes me really mad.

It is a disease. You can try your absolute hardest and still not be able get rid of excess fat. There are so many external and internal factors that effect your weight, but most don't understand or want to understand because they hate the way fat people look and we have been brainswashed to believe it's all about calories. You can't just say "Eat less" without considering all the factors that makes someone want to eat more.

Weight gain or loss is strictly a driven by calories in/calories out that said it’s complicated. Of course genetics play a role in your metabolic rate along with environmental factors. Genetics also plays a role in appetite and one’s eating habits are in many cases largely modeled off one’s parents. Some people have an easier time than others. It’s simply irresponsible however to tell people their decisions don’t matter. If you have a weight problem, you need to make difficult changes to create a calorie deficit to protect your health. I think we should have great empathy for people dealing with obesity and be supportive. At the same time, unless someone held a gun to their head, they did choose to make the decisions which is at a minimum a contributing factor to obesity.

I think it's a combination of both, there are a lot of issues that contribute to obesity, but there is a degree of lack of effort that contributes as well.

Some people who are overweight suffer from an eating disorder as well. When I was in recovery from b/p type anorexia I switched to binging without compensating for it. I ballooned in weight.

Regardless of whether a choice or not it is NEVER ok to discriminate against people because of their weight or appearance... Being fat and the assumptions held by society at large are extremely detrimental to individuals that exist in a larger body... It cost me everything... My life... My health... My future... My family... Everything that was ever precious to me was stolen... Because of me simply existing in a larger body... Now I'm dying... I wake up screaming in pain... And it's just going to get worse... I've never had a problem with food... I actually don't like to eat at all anymore... Undereating has been my major issue for years... Yet I was not even aware I was doing so...

Depends when it happens. If you reach adulthood, nice and fit and lean and you don't have any hormone imbalances or illnesses, but you really just like to eat a lot then it's a choice. If you have reached adulthood obese then you have got an excess of fat cells which you will be able to decrease the amount of fat contained within those cells but they will always be trying to refill. You have many times more fat cells than other people and you'll be basically dieting for the rest of your life because you will not be able to trust your hunger cues, you will have to do extra exercise and build extra muscle compared to those who entered adulthood at a healthy weight. At that point it is a disease. On the flipside too, people who enter adulthood underweight, often struggle to keep weight on and every time they get an illness like a cold or gastro, they'll drop weight fast compared to the healthy weight person. The only exception is when a healthy weight female has multiple pregnancies because she will grow additional fat cells during her pregnancies. Meaning after having kids some women will also fight the extra weight forever.

@@Rationalist101 In my case: im depressed, and my will-power is at 0 even if there is nothing I want more than to change. Depression is an illness that fucks with your brain. People with hormonal problems and PCOS can also have a really hard time to lose weight.
