Every single speed bike actually has a total of three gears. Sit, stand, push.

Riding is one of the better things to do if you're having a depression. Go out for a ride, empty the brain and get the endorphins going.

SS'ing can be very Zen, no shifting, no thinking, just pedal. The simplicity of it is my favorite part of riding my Spot SS. No belt drive, heck I'm still running cable actuated discs, but that bike always just works. Definitely my choice for the zombie apocalypse :-)

That's a big YES to exercise and mental health!! We humans are meant to move, and some of us are absolutely built for cardio endurance and just flat-line without it. It's been a life-long struggle for me to keep a life that is balanced to include time for outside, cardio exercise - critical to my state of mind! And yes, single speed mtb is fantastic bang-for-the-buck exercise!

This! If I don't get at least a couple of rides in a week I start to get crabby. Not to mention my outlook on the world tends to the dark side of things. Cycling literally saved my life in my late twenties and I can't image a world without my bike.

Trail therapy is definitely what keeps me from needing anxiety meds. Especially this year with the pandemic. Being able to get out to the woods, fresh air and sunshine, as well as the cardio, definitely helped me keep my head together through this madness 👍

Oh how I can relate. Mental health and cycling is tied in together for me at this point, and I'm with you, cardio stuff is where it's at. But it's also physical health, I can't feel any of my creaky joints, upset muscles or whatever else is bugging me when I'm riding, and for quite a while thereafter. Also, you're on a SS. You get all the cred. All of it.

I’ve only known one lady who rocked a SS for MTB and she was a bad ass. Good on you for adding some strength training lady! 💪 I’ve learned that I need to “beat” myself up on the daily in order to keep any unused energy from boiling over into other parts of my life. Riding, running, strength training, hiking, or snowboarding does the trick. Thanks for sharing your ride! Get Dusty! 🤙

IMHO, one gear really is better. I pretty much only ride a singlespeed -- for both my MTB and my CX bike. I love the simplicity of a singlespeed machine, and that it makes you a better rider anticipating what's coming so you can use momentum and stay off your brakes. It's also so much easier to maintain a SS bike. Love your channel (as well as Steve's). Keep up the good work!

Great video on riding single speed in Sedona! I LOVE my Rocker SS, which I've had now for almost two years. I ride it probably 75% of the time (other 25% on a geared bike I got through Steve's recommendation) and although as you know its very cardio, it certainly does build up muscular endurance and strength as well. Its my goto therapy other than meditation.

I’m not brave enough to contemplate a single speed- you’re a beast! I do, however feel best when I get enough cardio in. It’s always a fight with depression and anxiety. Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed with trail options and don’t know where to go or riding the same places all the time? As always, I appreciate your thoughtful content. Keep up the good work!

I have a single speed. I can get a real workout just riding in the area near my house. I got a singlespeed just for the purpose of working out. If I wanted to reach a destination a multiple speed bike would be better, but I have a car for that.I used to be a runner and riding this bike keeps my lungs and heart in good shape.

seems like good trails for singlespeed riding. where I live for my regular riding it would not be suitable, but at certain spots or some ski track loops I could. but I've done the heavier gear method to push myself, train, but so many hills here and some are very steep.

I have a carbon Chameleon that I never ride because it's just so stiff. Makes me wonder how hardtails like the Rocker feel! Cardio's also my jam. It's so satisfying to push myself! Singlespeeds seem neat for that, but the climbing is steep in Albuquerque and I'm not sure how well one would work here. Great riding! I love watching you enjoy yourself~
@hardtailparty

The carbon chameleon is a SUPER stiff frame, especially for lighter riders. The aluminum chameleon rides a lot betterz and the spot rocker rides even better.

I ride several speed. But I often choose to stay in one speed and get higher cadence when light and heavy power when going up. I guess this idea, which is somewhat singlespeedy, is good to get variabel trainingload.I have a small roundtrack I always go in one speed, and its ok to not shift.

Yep. Getting injured and not being able to ride since Oct has been brutal for my mental health... I haven't ridden a single speed since the late 90's... but I plan to have it a set of wheels for it on my new Chameleon.

Just keep that bike! Spot makes great bikes. I recently sold my 2018 Rocker and ordered a new one. Riding single speed regularly makes you way faster on a geared bike. You won’t instinctually gear down before climbs and use your brakes a lot less. You should also try it with the 27.5 plus wheels on it if you’re in really chunky terrain.

My max heart rate is 175, and I don't have a monitor, but sure I hit and exceed it just about every ride in my area, it is very technical rocky, and rooty in the east, and yes I relate to feeling much better after a ride when I feel grumpy, lol

so the question is single speed better is a little flawed. while a fixie is better for city/messenger it has no freewheel, so pedals always spin, and no brakes, so braking is done w/ the legs. yes fixie is better for messenger/city riding. and prob. yes your single speed is better for cardio but not much else right..
